It's that time of year again when Railroads Street Youth Project needs help with collecting gifts for local teens. This year the program will be run out of the Railroad Street Youth Project office. The two local school districts are supplying us with names of low income teens that could use a little holiday cheer this year. Last year we served over 60 youth, each of the past 5 years we have tripled our number served. Because of the eco-nomic situation this year, we expect there will be many more families falling on hard times. We need your help! What we are looking for are gift certificates to local eateries and businesses, or donations of cash so that we can purchase gift certificates according to the suggestions of the teens themselves. Please pass on this message to your neighbors, friends and business associates. We will need all donations by this coming week. You may send any gifts by mail to RSYP, P.O. Box 698, Great Barrington, MA 01230 or drop off at their youth center on Bridge Street. You may email me with any questions at [email protected].

In order to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer, all Big Y Supermarkets donated proceeds from their entire produce department as well as additional select products throughout the store to the Massachusetts and Connecticut Affiliates of Susan G. Komen for the Cure for the entire month of October. Customers were generous in helping to raise a total of $80,000 to these local charities during the second year of this campaign. In addition, as part of Big Y's largest manufacturer joint effort, customer purchases of hundreds of thousands of pink products such as specially marked Campbell's soup, Thomas' English Muffins or Cheerios benefited breast cancer organizations on a national level.

This month long program is formally called, Partners of Hope in order to reflect the partnership, commitment and support of breast cancer awareness and research that are so vital for many.

According to Big Y CEO, Donald D'Amour, We are delighted to be able to promote breast cancer awareness to our customers and employees within our community. Every dollar earned takes us closer to helping more and more women of all ages.

Formal check presentations in Massachusetts and Connecticut will be made to each organization soon. This $80,000 comes in addition to Big Y's Mother's Day campaign where the chain raised $50,500 from Big Y branded products. Thus, the 2008

total funds raised for the Massachusetts and Connecticut Affiliates of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is $130,500. Ronni Cohen-Boyar, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure explained, At the local level, we are

committed to 100% screening and 100% access to care for all of the Commonwealth's residents. The wonderful generosity of both Big Y and their customers will be felt as local programs are the beneficiaries of 75% of our net proceeds. In the big picture, the remaining 25% of our net proceeds are targeted towards research and national programming to fight the battle against breast cancer.

Headquartered in Springfield, MA, Big Y is one of the largest independently owned supermarket chains in New England. Proud to be family owned and operated, they currently operate 58 stores throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts with over 9,800 employees. Founded in 1936 by brothers Paul and Gerald D'Amour, the store was named after an intersection in Chicopee, Massachusetts where two roads converge to form a Y.

based on the applicant's need and the appropriateness of the request.

On December 20 at 8 p.m. Leahy returns to the Colonial's stage to perform a holiday concert filled with favorite Celtic medleys and traditional Christmas carols. A Canadian powerhouse of eight musical brothers and sisters, this family of instrumentalists, singers and dancers brings a rare level of originality and musicianship to the stage. Leahy's most recent American tour included a sold-out stop at the Colonial, which remains the Colonial's most requested return performance. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Colonial Ticket Office at 111 South Street Monday-Friday 10-5, Saturday 10-2, by calling (413) 997-4444 or 24/7 online at www.TheColonialTheatre.org.

The band's four acclaimed CDs - Leahy, Lakefield, In All Things, and Leahy Live - have world-wide sales of over half-a-million copies. They opened up for Shania Twain on her first World Tour and were the subject of an Academy Award winning documentary on the life and music of their family. Their countless awards and accolades span many musical genres, from traditional roots, folk, and country to pop, jazz, and classical.

A Christmas show with Leahy is yet another multifaceted experience that takes audiences on a sensory and emotional ride with their music, dance and song. Through the magic of technology, they will share the stage with their parents and other people from their past. If that wasn't enough, they're adding more Leahys to the line-up by having the children of various members join them on stage to sing, play, and dance-just as they would if they were at a Leahy family gathering back home in Lakefield, Ontario.

Leahy's performance will be interspersed with Christmas stories that make you feel as though you are one of the characters yourself. From sacred hymns and slow airs to a smorgasbord of fiery tunes and Christmas carols, they'll travel the spectrum when it comes to the intensity with which they play.

The Leahys have always been known for the way in which they fuse musical styles and genres. The ease with which they do this becomes even clearer in their Christmas show with the way they employ symphonic arrangements with their violins, world rhythms with their dance, and haunt-ing choral harmonies with their voices. How they're able to move from one genre to another is shocking at first, then understandable when you remember that they grew up in a household where music was everywhere. Music wasn't defined by words or categories, but rather its ability to touch and move one's soul. Leahy continues to share this attitude whenever they perform. They play for the joy of making music and the purpose of giving something more than sound to the listener-an experience and long lasting awakening.

Music has always been a huge part of our Christmas experience. As children, if it wasn't for all of the lights and decorations everywhere, we knew it was Christmas because there was a musical gathering every night of the week. Our house would be alive with people, music, dance and song! Children and adults alike all joined in and participated in the festivities. This is one aspect of our Christmas show that we're looking forward to the most, bringing the audience in on all of action taking place on stage. That may be where the music starts, but it won't be where it ends. You can't attend a Christmas gathering and not be expected to join in on all of the fun!

As much as Leahy still carries on these traditions today, the sacred importance of this time of year is what is first and foremost in their house. To that end, Leahy's repertoire of sacred hymns and Christmas carols runs deep as it comes from many years of singing in the Choir at Mass. In fact, it was in the church Choir that the Leahys learned how to sing and harmonize. It is such an important part of our Christmas experience that to this day, we still sing in the choir and at Mass on Christmas Eve. These sacred hymns and choral arrangements are sure to be a highlight of their Christmas show.

Watching a Leahy performance is always an extra-ordinary experience. You can't help but feel transported into another time and space-be it their living room back in Lakefield on a snowy December night, or one of many Cathedrals around the world on Christmas Eve. A Leahy Family Christmas will make you feel like you've been taken on one of the most exhilarating Christmas adventures of your life. And to think, all in one show, on one night and from one family.

While the holiday season is usually one of joy, happiness and celebration, for many people the emotion of the season is often depression. Fortunately, it doesn't have to be that way. Many of the things that leave us feeling depressed are things we can control.

For example, the constant stream of media and advertising holiday images contributes to depression for many people. Comparing our own lives to these unrealistic images of holiday perfection, it's easy to feel left out, inadequate, or as if we aren't getting all that's due us.

While there's no avoiding the holiday media/advertising blitz, but it's easy to accept that what we're being shown isn't reality, but rather the make-believe that comes with actors, make-up artists and high dollar productions. We don't have to compete with that.

Eating healthier and getting enough rest is another way to fight holiday blues. Holiday foods usually mean too many rich, high-calorie party temptations, treats loaded with sugar, and opportunities to drink too much. Toss in a busy holiday schedule and it's easy to feel tired, unhealthy, overweight and generally depressed.

So should you just avoid all those holiday foods? Actually, no, since that can leave you feeling deprived and more likely to finally over-indulge. Instead, use common sense and moderation. Limit alcohol consumption and enjoy your favorite holiday foods, but in reasonable-sized portions and without going back for seconds.

And don't forget exercise. It's often ignored in busy holiday schedules, yet studies show that even small or moderate amounts of exercise can lift your spirits. It's also a great way to burn those extra calories of the season.

Lastly, don't let depression rule your life. Holiday socializing is a great way to combat the blues. Make the effort to go and meet people at a party, or just call up a friend to go for coffee and talk about interesting things. Spending time with others and refocusing your thinking on positive things you enjoy is your goal.

Eating right, exercising, taking a realistic view of the holiday madness and having an active social life all take effort, but they're all essential to help-ing you enjoy the holiday season. Even small efforts in these areas can help you feel better physically and mentally.

But if you find nothing seems to help fight that holiday depression, talk to a counseling professional. They're trained to help you work through and cope with these feelings.

The Counseling Corner is provided as a public service by the American Counseling Association, the nation's largest organization of counseling professionals. Learn more about the counseling profession at the ACA web site, www.counseling.org.

The Pittsfield Fire Department would like to remind everyone this holiday season to keep fire safety in mind. During the 2007-2008 winter holiday season there were 1,624 residential structure fires with 9 civilian deaths, 43 civilian injuries, 65 fire service injuries & $28.2 mil-lion loss in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Electric Holiday Lights

Before plugging in newly purchased electrical decorations, or those you've used during previous seasons, carefully inspect each decoration. Cracked sockets, frayed, loose or bare wires, and loose connections may cause serious electric shock or start a fire. Replace damaged items with new decorations that bear the UL Mark. The green UL Mark means the light strings should be used only indoors. The red UL Mark indicates the light strings can be used both inside and out.

Make sure to unplug light strings and electrical decorations before replacing light bulbs or fuses, and keep light strings and other electrical decorations away from children's reach. Electrical decorations aren't toys and could produce a deadly electric shock or cause a fire if misused. Make sure you keep light strings away from pets as well.

Trees1. Water the live tree every day. 2. Buy a cut tree as fresh as possible. A newly cut tree can stay

green for several weeks. 3. Never use a cut tree in a public place, such as an office, lobby,

or restaurant. 4. Always shut off the lights overnight and when you leave your

home. 5. Never use lit candles as decorations. 6. Use a non-tip style tree stand. 7. Make sure the tree is at least three feet from fireplaces, radia-

tors, space heaters, heating vents and other sources of heat. Cooking

When cooking make sure to wear short or tight fitting sleeves, loose fitting clothes can easily catch on fire. Never throw water or use an extinguisher on a grease fire. Water will only spread the fire and the force of the extinguisher can splash flaming grease out of the pan. Don't leave items unattended on the stove, and make sure your home is equipped with working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, and fire extinguishers that bear the UL Mark.

If you have any further questions about fire safety please call the Pittsfield Fire Department at 413-448-9764.
