Japanese trains can be very crowded, especial-ly in metropolitan areas. Because of this, there are many people that want to sit down but for
whatever reason, cannot put this desire into words. That’s why badges with a symbol on them that can be attached to bags or other items have been created for these people.

This symbol is called a “Help Mark,” and is used by people with a disability or health condition that is not obvious at first glance. It was first created by Tokyo’s municipal government, but has now caught on all over the country. It was initially created by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare for pregnant women so that people around them would give them due consider-ation.

Conversely, there is a badge for people who feel they want to give up their seat to others on trains. The “Take My Seat” symbol is for people who want to offer their seats to those people, including pregnant ladies, who need help. Commuter SHIINO Yusuke is the creator of this symbol. He came up with the idea when an old lady, who seemed to need to sit down herself, offered her seat to his pregnant wife.

Many people do not notice even when a person who needs a seat is standing nearby, or are hesitant about offering a seat. They feel embarrassed about offering their seat and being turned down. They lose the oppor-tunity before they can muster up enough courage to say, “Please sit down.” Some even pretend they are sleeping. Some leave their seats without saying any-thing and move to another car. Some of them say that, with this mark, they have enough courage to offer up their seat. The “Take My Seat” symbol was trending on social media recently and was also featured on TV.

In urban areas, most people commute by train to their companies or schools. For the majority of people, this commute takes approximately 30 ~ 60 minutes and they usually spend their time reading newspapers or books, playing games or listening to music on their handheld mobile devices. People who are tired simply sleep in their seats.

I myself am pass-ing my middle age years and I stand in a long queue at the departure station as I want to get my seat on the train for my re turn home. One day, a young w o m a n w e a r i n g black clothing got on at a station on the way and stood in front of me. Inadvertently, I looked at her belly and noted that she looked pregnant.

But her stomach was not so large so I thought that she may not be pregnant. I wondered whether I should give her my seat or not. I know that many young women are concerned about their figures, and if she was not pregnant, she would be offended if I implied that she was pregnant through my actions.

After a while, she moved to stand in front of the seat to my left where a middle-aged woman was sitting. I felt relieved. If the middle-aged woman also thought the woman in black was pregnant, then she should give up her seat.

Japanese grammar is actually much easier than that of other languages. This is a super easy lesson that takes an approach based on vocabulary you’d hear in everyday life and is not a conventional academic grammar les-son.

In English, interrogative sentences are expressed as shown in 5W (When, Where, Who, What, and Why), while in Japanese they are also expressed the sameway, as in: itsu, dokode, darega, naniwo and dousite (naze).

You can make many different types of ques-tions, by applying “kore nani?,” which is a rephrasing of the basic sentence pattern, “nani kore?” (What this?).
