Dean says MBA Program Director says

We’re one of the best Business Schools in the world and our graduates emerge ready to lead in Asia, and globally.

We provide a program that blends Western-style business education in a China context, and that attracts staff and students from all over the world.

The HKUST Business School develops business leaders in Asia for the world. Through our quality programs, our faculty member’s research findings and insights, and a growing network of accomplished alumni, we contribute to the vitality of industries and comprehensiveness of the economies around us.

We are a young, dynamic and comprehensive business school that provides business education to students at all levels. We were the first business school in Asia to receive dual accreditation from the prestigious Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) in the U.S. and EQUIS in Europe, and our recent reaccreditation by AACSB highlights our strong commitment to continuous improvement.

Our pursuit of excellence has been recognized by, among others, the Financial Times Global MBA Rankings. The School is now ranked ninth in the world and is a role model for new, aspiring schools in Asia to emulate. As the Financial Times puts it, we are among “the leading group of world class business schools.”

The School’s research ranking is also within the global Top 10, the first time ever for an Asian business school. Our outstanding faculty have been recruited from around the world, and their China-focused research advances knowledge that contributes to both business and society at large.

We aim to educate business leaders who are responsible and ethical as well as successful. At the HKUST Business School, we help students develop a desire to contribute to the region and the world.

Hong Kong has been the world’s freest economy for 16 consecutive years, and has long been where East and West meet and merge. Its institutions, rule of law and position as the gateway to China make it a natural choice of headquarters for multinational firms and home to top decision makers in business. Hong Kong is the place to be for aspiring executives who are pursuing an MBA education in China’s booming new market.

The HKUST MBA program echoes these strengths. We offer a Western-style business education within a China context in one of the world’s top programs, with specific relevance to the global trend of business going East. Our faculty members are truly multicultural, coming from 15 different countries. Their international-standard research has a wide range of focuses, including China business, and they

are ready to impart their wealth of knowledge and experience to you.

Each year our reputation attracts students from all over the world to explore our unique advantage, creating a mix of cultural and professional backgrounds that will maximize the dimensions of your learning experience. We develop responsible, well-rounded leaders who have the global vision, business insight and cultural sensibility to excel in the fast-moving business world.

The excellence of our program and success of our alumni have brought us worldwide recognition, which bodes well for our current and future students, and for our alumni.

Join our world-class program today and see for yourself how HKUST can prepare you to lead and succeed.

What we offer

6 Why HKUST MBA Why HKUST MBA 7

East meets West

A world-class education in Western management expertise within a Greater China context. Our leading faculty, many graduates or former teachers of leading universities in the U.S. and Europe, and/or with profound experience in managing business in China, bridges the gap between East and West. Your fellows from mainland China also expose you to China’s energy and entrepreneurial spirit.

Cross-cultural Teamwork

In a globalized world, you need to be able to work with people from different cultures and backgrounds. You will be able to develop these skills because our faculty and students come from all over the world. We also structure our program to offer plenty of opportunities for cross-cultural teamwork so you can put your skills to the test.

Responsible Leadership

Our goal is not only to develop business managers, but managers who are principled and ethical. We offer a flagship core program on Responsible Leadership and Ethics and organize enrichment talks on the issue so all students can acquire the insights and skills needed to be responsible leaders in Asia for the world.

The excellence of our teaching and our location next to dynamic China make HKUST one of the best places in the world to study for an MBA. We develop business leaders who have both Asian and global perspectives, and who share our vision of contributing to the social and economic transformation of the region.

Lorena CompeanClass of 2011MexicoPre-MBA: ConsultantH4 Partners

I am a Mexican woman looking for a successful professional career in China, and the MBA program helps me in many ways. I am gaining knowledge about the business culture in China, developing management skills, gaining additional international exposure, as well as getting valuable access to an Asian network. I also appreciate the opportunities to learn about different cultures and to celebrate traditions with my very diverse group of classmates.

Marc BoelenClass of 2012NetherlandsPre-MBA: ManagerKPMG Transaction & Restructing Services

I was at a point in my career where I wanted a larger role in developing and managing companies. At the same time I was attracted to Asia because of its energy, culture and rapid economic development. The HKUST program fits my needs perfectly. Its academic strengths could help me master new skills, and its focus on the China market developed my knowledge required for managing in Asia.

Doing Business in China

General managers in China face a changing environment and many challenging or ill-defined situations. Prof Cassian Cheung helps provide the bigger picture by drawing on case studies, theories and his own plentiful experience as former

President of Wal-Mart China Co., Ltd, former Corporate Vice President and Asia President of the Quaker Oats Company, and former Chief Operating Officer for China of The Nestle Company.

Building a Powerful Consumer Brand in China

The former President of PepsiCo Asia, Prof Ron McEachern, draws on his deep experience in the region to teach about marketing and branding in China. He offers a 12-step “recipe” on how to develop

a relevant and preferred brand that applies equally to multinational and local brands in China, and also has relevance for Chinese brands trying to go global.

China Cases

Our teachings on business management are backed up with real-life examples drawn from the Greater China business world. A sample of our case studies includes:

• Air China

• Avon Product China

• Cathay Pacific: IT Outsourcing

• Cola Wars in China: The Future is Here

• Hong Kong Jockey Club

• Motorola in China: Failure of Success

• Samsung China’s entry strategy of color TV

• SanLu Milk, Made in China

• Sun Hung Kai Properties

China Expertise

8 Why HKUST MBA Why HKUST MBA 9

One of the distinguished features of the HKUST MBA is our expertise in China business. We offer popular China Focus courses and have close connections with Chinese practitioners, who among other things give guest lecture and support our China Field Trips. We also draw on China cases for teaching and have a strong alumni network.

One of the key aims of this course is to provide a context for students when they are doing business in China and give them a deeper understanding of the issues they will face there. Hopefully, through this course they will understand how to be a responsible business leader in China.

China is one of the most exciting, dynamic and creative marketing challenges in the world, but there’s a misperception that highly successful brands in North America or Europe can transplant their success into China. No matter how well you have done elsewhere, you will need to build your brand from the ground up and look at every aspect, from innovation and packaging to pricing and delivery.

China Field Trips

First-hand observations can be highly illuminating. Our China field trips are two-credit excursions that involve preparatory lectures about the realities of Chinese business and their common grounds and differences with non-Mainland China firms. You then travel to Shanghai or Beijing and visit firms from different sectors. Working in teams, you prepare a company report on your findings.

One of the most interesting things we did was a field trip to Beijing to look at different companies such as automotive, consumer electronics and banking. I was really struck by our visit with a senior manager of a Chinese bank, who was surprisingly open with us about the Chinese finance industry. For example, he shared some data refuting some of the popular claims about China's lending practices while acknowledging some structural challenges.

At HKUST, students develop teamwork and leadership skills through Experimental Learning Program (ELP).

Moving from Hong Kong to Beijing was the beginning of my great adventure thanks to an internship in a major bank and the exchange in Tsinghua. The whole experience granted me the access to a fascinating cultural context of doing business in Mainland China. The learning process focused on my skills rather than language barriers eventually helped me to land my current job in the financial services. Hadn’t I leveraged on the opportunities at HKUST, I would never have seriously opened the doors to China and the tremendous opportunities and experiences waiting behind it.

Why HKUST MBA 13

China is a global powerhouse economy and Hong Kong is its gateway, a place where MBA students have the unique opportunity to learn about Asian business from the perspective of international business practices. Hong Kong also offers a diverse lifestyle of 24-hour entertainment, scenic beaches and pristine green hillsides.

Hong Kong – City of Life

12 Why HKUST MBA

Global business center

Hong Kong is the world’s freest economy and its 2nd most competitive economy. More than 3,800 overseas and Mainland companies have set up regional operations here, offering outstanding networking and career opportunities.

Asian hub

With its strategic location in Asia and one of the world's best airports, Hong Kong is less than five flying hours from half of the world's population. One can easily get around to Asian cities: Shanghai, Beijing, Singapore and Tokyo, etc.

Gateway to China

Hong Kong and Mainland China have a close and special economic relationship. For example, almost half of the overseas-funded projects registered in the Mainland are tied to Hong Kong interests.

The HKUST MBA Program provides opportunities for MBA students to meet and learn from the region’s business leaders through organized talks and dinners, invited lecturers and the activities of its careers office.

Easy to get around

Hong Kong has a wide-ranging public transport system of buses, minibuses, trains, ferries and taxis. Getting around Hong Kong is easy and affordable.

The international business environment of Hong Kong and local education system mean English is widely spoken, alongside Cantonese and Putonghua. You don’t have to worry about language barrier in the city.

A lifestyle with something for everyone

Hong Kong is a stopping point for many major international music, theater and dance performers and has its own thriving arts scene. The city is famous for its fabulous and affordable food, with more than 11,000 restaurants offering all varieties of Asian and Western cuisine.

Newcomers to Hong Kong are often surprised to learn there are more than 40 beaches here, numerous graded hiking paths, golf courses and many other outdoor and sporting attractions (such as the renowned Rugby 7s tournament). More than 70 per cent of Hong Kong’s land mass is rural mountains, forests and outlying islands.

The pre-session Mandarin course was a great introduction to Asia and Hong Kong, and to China’s official language. The course was held three weeks before MBA classes started and it familiarized us with Hong Kong’s climate, culture, and buzzing attractions. We took a boat cruise around the harbor, sampled a lot of different Chinese cuisines and gained insights into Hong Kong’s multi-cultural society.

Cathy ChaoClass of 2011United StatesPre-MBA: Analyst- Equity Deriatives MarketingJP Morgan

I’ve been very impressed by the diversity of my peers. It is not uncommon to be working in a group where everyone is from a different country. They all have unique experiences and a different story to tell and I’ve been exposed to a lot of new views and perspectives. Despite our different backgrounds, there’s a common thread of cooperation and mutual learning that helps us to work together effectively.

First step

Putonghua training programThe three-week Putonghua training program is available at two levels, elementary and intermediate, for non-Chinese speaking students. Highly recommended for anyone interested in exploring career opportunities in China and the region.

MBA acceleratorA mandatory 8-session pre-course for students with non-business background held in August will hone your basic accounting concepts, quantitative and spreadsheet skills.

Residential programThe first required core course, Preparing to Lead, encompasses a five-day residential program. Case study training and experiential learning program aim at fostering teamwork and facilitating the formation of study groups.

Duration

Full-time participants are expected to complete the MBA in 16 months. Candidates with considerable work experience and international exposure, upon approval at admissions, could join the accelerated 12-month program. Both require 52 credits for graduation.

16-month programSummer session is free from study load to allow for internship opportunities. Students will be taking electives in the second year Fall semester, either at a partner school by joining the international exchange program, or at HKUST.

12-month programSimilar to the 16-month MBA, this program begins in August and follows an identical curriculum. An intensive summer session wraps up the program.

Course substitution

Students may apply for course substitution from some required courses if they have taken equivalent courses elsewhere. They will need to provide relevant supporting documents, such as course syllabuses and transcripts, to show satisfactory performance. If course substitution is approved, students need to take other electives as replacement.

Delivery and assessment

Faculty members identify delivery and assessment protocols to achieve optimum teaching results. Teaching will include lectures, seminars and case study, as well as simulations, projects and presentations, both individually and in group. Assessment methods include class participation, assignments, group projects, presentations and exams.

The residential and experiential learning program was fun and challenging at the same time. There were lectures, discussions, and innovative learning experiences, but most importantly I got to know more about myself and my classmates, and we built up team relations. It was also extraordinarily well organized – all you have to worry about is getting enough sleep and enjoying this unique and rewarding learning opportunity.

We believe these contests are highly valuable to students’ personal development. We always see the change as soon as students come back from the competitions. Having competed with some of the best students from the world’s top universities, they became more confident, more dynamic in class and have the courage to develop creative ideas.

Prof Stephen NasonFaculty Advisor of Business Plan & Case competitions

It is my honor to represent HKUST at the prestigious Asia Moot Corp business plan competition. We received extensive support from the School including a preparatory course, feedback on our plan and presentation, and guidance on strategies. It gave me a chance to apply what I learned. At other schools only a few students are selected to do these competitions, but everyone at HKUST gets an opportunity to go to one of these overseas competitions. It makes a difference!

During the competition, I faced about 20 top consultants and when I heard them applauding, I knew the hard work had paid off.

I founded the HKUST MBA Entrepreneur Club in my first year of studies. I can do this because I’m an MBA student at HKUST. I might not have this chance if I were an outside consultant.

HKUST alumni are very supportive. Like Arthur Yuen, now the Deputy Chief Executive of Hong Kong Monetary Authority, talked to us about the Hong Kong’s financial infrastructure and its policy responding to the post-crisis. Without the school’s effort to build such alumni relations, we couldn’t have been connected to such a rich network and I am glad to be part of it.

operation of different industries. Our recent visits include Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong Monetary Authority and Toyota Assembly Plant in Guangzhou.

The Chief Economist of Fedex, Dr. Gene Huang, spoke to us and it was an eye-opener. I learned a lot about China’s economy and its interaction with the global market. For instance, I didn’t realize China had the highest green energy investment in the world, or that 1.9 trillion RMB of income was “gray” and out of the taxman’s reach.

Working for Citigroup in the summer was a great experience that boosted my knowledge of the banking industry. The internship was very well designed as a good balance between hands-on experience and a number of training sessions in which senior managers of Citi gave us valuable overviews about their divisions. Through the whole experience, I gained a lot of knowledge on how Transaction Banking works globally and particularly in Asia Pacific.

Li & Fung recruited me over 2,000 applicants world-wide, before I completed my MBA. It turned out the skills I learned in courses like Managerial Communication and Responsible Leadership and Business Ethics played a critical role in my success. I found out that multinationals like Li & Fung value managers who can lead and make sound decisions, which my MBA prepared me for.

My previous experience was mainly in the West in business processing and re-engineering. The MBA gave me the opportunity to learn about accounting and finance and try new approaches in a risk-free environment. It is much more rewarding to get your ideas across when you are challenged in ways you don’t expect. I also learned more about Asia. The soft skills and knowledge I gained all help me in my current job.
