School Working BeeWhoops, what a mistake! My apologies to all fathers for trying to organise a working bee on their special day. The working bee will now be held on Saturday, 13 September from 9:30am. During the day we are hoping to remove asparagus fern from the driveway and replant the garden bed near the Kindergarten classroom. Please bring a mattock, shovel or any other digging implements you think will assist on the day. Because of the scope of work we are inviting all grades to come along and help. The day will conclude with a BBQ lunch.

Peninsula Community of Schools (PCS) Science FairThis Wednesday some of our students will be representing our school at the PCS Science Fair. The theme for the Fair is Food for the future: Science feeding the world! Go to http://pcssciencefair.weebly.com/ to find out how our students responded to the theme. You might also look at how the other schools in the PCS interpreted the theme.

Green WeekThis year, because of the increased activities, we have gone from celebrating Green Day to Green Week. Mrs Cullen has organised a huge range of activities for our students. I would like to thank her for the fantastic work she has done to provide our students with quality educational opportunities. Mrs Cullen has more information on Green Week later on in the newsletter.

P&C Trivia NightThis is a night not to be missed! Grab some friends, get dressed up as your favourite band/rocker/era and have some fun. Cost is $25 which includes Pizzas from Toro Nero. This is a wonderful way to support the school, meet new people and have a great night out. Date for your diary: Saturday, 13 September; Time: 7-11:00pm; Venue: School Hall. Order forms are still available at the school office.

3-6 School DiscoUnfortunately the school disco that was going to be held on Wednesday, 10 September has had to be postponed until Term 4. More information about an alternate date will appear shortly.

Book FairThank you to everyone who bought a book at the Book Fair last Monday. Over $8000 worth of books were sold on the day which is a fantastic effort. I would like to thank Mrs Morrison and her band of helpers who worked very hard on a very busy afternoon.

Student AchievementAlisha D (5Z) competed in the Showcase Regional Championships on the Central Coast over the weekend. Alisha qualified for the Nationals in Queensland in both her Classical Ballet and Lyrical Solos receiving Gold Awards in both. Alisha also took out the best costume award, with over 80 solo entries, a great result! Alisha’s troupes also had great success on the day with all 8 numbers qualifying for the nationals. Congratulations Alisha!

Molly B (5C) ran in the Pub2Pub fun run last weekend and finished in a pretty respectable time of 1 hour 38 minutes. This placed her 49th of 245 finishers in the 10 to 18 years category. She ran with her grandfather and beat him home and was only 3 minutes behind her mother. Next year she’s running with her mum while grandad puts his feet up. Well done Molly!

Green Week | JENNY CULLEN, Environment Co-ordinator

Tuesday 2nd – Friday 5th SeptemberEach year our school has featured a whole school Green Day focussed on environmental education activities. This year the activities are scheduled over four days to accommodate our growing numbers and timetabling requirements. These activities are designed to increase students’ knowledge and appreciation of our extraordinarily rich local environment and also, the pressing problems faced both locally and globally. Parents are welcome to attend any activities. If you have particular experience or interest that you would like to contribute, please let me know!

Waste – Please make an effort to send an earth-friendly lunch and morning tea during Green Week – without plastic or foil. Over a lifetime, the waste created with our food is causing real problems. It is truly heartening to see Elanora students taking pride in their healthy, waste-free lunches and morning teas.

Green Week ActivitiesKindergarten and Year 1: Environmental Art – a 1 ½ hour session with Emmie Collins, an artist and bush regenerator. Students will make an artwork using small found natural objects, so please start collecting. Look for thin, light natural objects which could be easily glued or attached to paper e.g. leaf skeletons, seed pods, small pieces of driftwood, feathers, small shells with holes. Send in from Monday, 25th August. Parent helpers needed.

Years 1 – 6: Birds in our School, Thursday, 4th September – Tim Thurston will give a presentation about the birds who share our playground, particularly the birds named in our school houses: Rosella, Lorrikeet, Kookaburra and Currawong. Tim is an ecologist completing further study in ornithology, researching Rainbow Lorrikeets. He is also a professional bird caller and is experienced in children’s nature education.

Year 2: Waste presentation and audit, Wednesday, 3rd September – Pittwater Council’s Waste Education staff will talk about waste and organise an audit of the total school waste from the previous day. It is several years since the school’s last waste audit so we will be comparing results.

Year 3: Aboriginal Heritage presentation, Thursday, 4th September – a presentation with each class by an officer from the Aboriginal Heritage Office, informing students about aspects of traditional Aboriginal culture and appropriate respect for artefacts such as rock engravings.

Year 4: Catchment education, Wednesday, 3rd September - a class session with Coastal Environment Educators learning about stormwater, where it goes and how we can help keep it clean using a large-scale 3D model of the Narrabeen Lagoon catchment.

Outdoor environmental activities – Year 2: Wed 3rd or Thursday 4th September– Tim will take each Year 2 class for a 1 hour session learning about the habitat and creatures in our grounds.

Year 3: Thursday 4th September - a 1½ - 2 hour session led by a teacher from Gibberagong Environmental Education Centre, learning about the school’s native bushland and creatures who may live there. Gibberagong teachers are specialist staff with the Department of Education and Communities.

Year 4: Thursday 4th September, Dewrang Reserve - a 1½ - 2 hour session led by a teacher from Gibberagong Environmental Education Centre, learning about the importance of local bushland at Dewrang Reserve, above the school.

Years 5 and 6: Tuesday 2nd September, Elanora Heights to Narrabeen Lagoon - following the trail of stormwater (and what it carries) with class teachers. This relates to the Take 3 for the Sea project which Stage 3 students have been working on.

...MAKE YOUR OWN LUNCH | REBECCA NEW & JENNY CULLENLast week students from 6P, 5/6R, 4C, 4W and 4M participated in the Make Your Own Lunch nutritional talk and workshop. Majority of the students were involved in making their own lunch on that day and were very proud when showcasing it at lunch time. They will now be completing the two week ‘at home’ challenge - to make morning tea and lunch for themselves for ten days!

Also on that day, during recess, we had students in Year 3 and Year 5 showing off their food creations as part of the two week home challenge which they are close to completing.

Thank to you our staff and parent volunteers who came to see what the children had made and gave them some special rewards. The calibre of meals was amazing - creative, colourful, tasty and environmentally friendly...well done everyone!

Thanks once again to our wonderful parent helpers without whom the program could not have run - your time and effort is appreciated by all.

Hi everyone, Nikita and I (Aspen) have joined the John Maclean Foundation to complete the Kids 4 Kids Ironman. This will have us swimming 3.8kms, riding 180kms and running 42.2kms in a total of 8 weeks.

This will be a very hard task for us as we have to average 500m of swimming each week, 22.5kms bike riding a week and 5.25kms of running a week so we are asking if you could donate whatever you can to motivate us and help raise money for children who desperately need new wheelchairs and don’t get to enjoy the freedom we have. We start our Ironman on Sat 30 August!!!! Thank you, Aspen & Nikita Lievert. To donate whatever you can please go to https://jmfkids4kids2014.everydayhero.com/au/team-askita
