Incoming Presidents Letter The New Sheriff in Town

Happy New Year Rose City Clowns! I hope you all had a great holi-day season with family and friends and are ready for a new year. Before I go any further, I want to give a BIG SHOUT OUT to the Board from last year and those who have served the past 5 years since I have been away. Great job you guys! Thank you for keeping the lights on and this little clown car moving forward. As the newly elected President of Rose City Clowns I know that I

have challenges ahead, but I am ready. One of the things I am going to do is look for another lo-cation to have our meetings. Perhaps an alternate location that we can switch back and forth to allow folks to have a break from a longer drive at least every other meeting. I did say I had challenges ahead and this is one of them… IF you have any ideas please feel free to email them to me. I am going to start looking in the Wilsonville and Woodburn areas first. My goal is to get the group re-energized; get better attendance at our meetings; to offer up new classes and workshops; bring in new clowns; reach out and network with our neighbors - Big

Foot Clown Alley in Washington; get at least one online meeting scheduled with another Alley or at least as a group attend one of the monthly broadcasts spon-sored by Leslie Akin; and much more. If you have ideas for classes (specific topics please) please email them to me. I have the responses from the 2019 survey and some of the answers were pretty vague. Specific comments were to include classes on Hospital Clowning and Mime. What do our ‘experienced’ clowns want to see? Juggling? Ukulele? Mag-ic? How to create a library/school show? Costuming? Salsa? Talk to me clowns!! Balloons and face painting are awesome too

but let’s all learn something NEW this year. Whether our first meeting is March 30th or earlier in February – please send me specifics on what YOU want to learn this year to add to your show or to your walk around or to your character. We need to get this party started with a bang! Lock n load clowns – get yer spurs and yer chaps on and get ready to ride out! Kimberley Eve

Saturday, January 11th was our chance to show our love for Wilma Torres, our resident Seam-stress, as she fights for her life with Stage 4 Brain Cancer. This event was a success with many of our local clowns showing up to participate in a Fashion Show and walk-around. Thank you to Al-bert “Clem” Alter for a wonderful pre-show! We also had a wonderful local Magician- Mr. Fan-tastic; Michael Douglas. The event was open to the public and although we only had 1 child in attendance (with his mama of course) and four family members of Wilma’s, the show went on! We raised $137 at the event and as of 1/15 we have nearly $800 collected toward our goal of $1,000. Several others have pledges as well so I think we will make our target!!! Donations are still being happily accepted and can be sent: 1) via PayPal to [email protected] (use Friends & Family option); or send a check made out to “Wilma Torres” directly to Kimberley Eve at 2035 Banyan Ct NW, Salem, Or 97034. This event was video tapped, and we will be presenting the tape and collected funds directly to Wilma. We will also be sharing this video at our next General Meeting. So, don’t miss it!!!

Clown Code of Ethics

1. I will keep my acts, performance and behavior in good

taste while I am in costume and makeup. I will remember at all times that I have been accepted as a member of the Rose City Clowns to provide clean clown comedy enter-tainment. I will remember that a good clown entertains others by making fun of himself or herself and not at the expense or embarrassment of others.

2. I will learn to apply and maintain my makeup in a profes-sional manner. I will keep my costume clean and in good re-pair. I will carry out my appearance and assignment for the entertainment of others and not for personal gain or personal publicity when performing at events on behalf of Rose City Clowns. I will always try to remain anonymous while in makeup and costume as a clown, though there may be circumstances when it is not reasonably possible to do so. 3. I will neither drink alcoholic beverages nor smoke while in makeup or clown costume. Also, I will not drink alcoholic beverages, or partake in other recreational drugs, prior to any clown ap-pearances. I will conduct myself as a gentleman/lady, never interfering with other clown or per-former’s acts, events, spectators, or individuals. I will not become involved in, or tolerate, sexual harassment or discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability or any protected status. I will refrain from the use of foul language. 4. I will remove my makeup and change into my street clothes as soon as possible following my appearance, so that I cannot be associated with any incident that may be detrimental to the good name of clowning. 5. While on appearance in makeup and costume at an event on behalf of Rose City Clowns, I will carry out the directives of the Boss Clown, and his/her designated deputies. I will check in to the event on time and ready to perform at the designated time. Should I be delayed I will con-tact the Boss Clown or his/her designated deputies promptly. I will abide by all performance rules without complaint in public. 6. I will be committed to participating in as many Rose City Clown meetings and events as pos-sible and to providing an atmosphere free of discrimination and harassment for other clowns of all ages to share ideas, learn and grow within the art of clowning.

Who’s Who in the Rose City Clowns??

I started this article years ago and thought it was fun to get to know our fellow clowns. After awhile I set the arti-cle aside not getting much response. Well recently I was perusing the internet by chance looking for a photo of Albert Alter. When what to my surprise would I find but this amazing article from a fellow classmate. Wow!!! I learned so much about Albert that I just had to share it with all of you! Did you know he went to Notre Dame Uni-versity???? Did you know he was born in Tennessee???? Bonnie-Jean

By Dave Heskin ’69 ND Club of the Jersey Shore – NDSA Past Chair Calling someone the class clown is usually a derogatory term. It implies someone who’d do anything for a joke, is disruptive, and probably would turn out to be what people used to call a ne’er-do-well. But Albert Alter ’69 really is a clown, a professional, and certainly not a ne’er-do-well. Born in Greenville, TN, the home of Davy Crockett, Al-bert always had an independent streak. What else would we expect from someone “born on a mountaintop in Ten-nessee”? Albert started acting in grade school plays, and attending Columbia Arts Management Community Con-certs Events that came through his small town. One famous violist in the middle of a school recital told him to sit back down in his seat. That is how he learned about correct audience behavior. He also learned that art critics do not always appreciate your art. His mother was not happy or appre-ciative of the “abstract carving” he did on the side of the family piano. He had a new pocket knife and was trying it out. Then there was the time he almost burned the house down - but that was sci-ence, NOT art. So in the fall of 1965, Albert arrived at Notre Dame and decided to study –

Chemical Engineering? Science had won out. As a fellow ChemE, I got to know Albert and worked with him on projects and in classes. The faculty encouraged us to work together, and since several courses were joint-project based, we frequently worked in teams. There were about fifty of us and we formed a pretty tightly knit group. Many of us stay in touch to this day. Albert graduated in 1969 with a BS in Chemical Engineering and headed east to Chicopee, MA, to sell paper chemicals for Hercules, Inc. Those of us of a certain age will remember the vagaries of the Selective Service system and the lengths newly minted graduates went to avoid the draft. ChemE’s usually were pretty safe – we generally got critical skills deferments by working for oil or chemical companies. And Hercules, which had a huge explosives and ordinance busi-ness, was good at keeping engineers. Unfortunately, Albert’s draft board in east Tennessee was not swayed by corporate entreaties. So they classified Albert 1-A. Rather than be drafted, Albert finally convinced them to classify him 1-AO and he volunteered for alternate service with Catho-lic Relief Services. So where did he go? A little country in Southeast Asia – Viet Nam.

He spent 2 years and an extra six months there working with CRS then went back to Portland, OR, with Hercules. By all accounts, Albert was a pretty good salesman. His manager did question why he wanted to get a Volvo as a company car (remember this was in the early 70’s). But by then Albert was getting bored. He wanted to do something completely different so he ap-plied to study at Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Bailey’s Clown College. He wanted to be a clown. It took a lot of persuading to convince the folks at Ringling Brothers that he was serious and not a flake. He applied four times and eventually was admitted, graduated, and became a working clown with the circus. He toured as a clown with Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus and helped set up and served as the assistant director of the first Ringling Bros. and Barnum

& Bailey Clown College Japan in Tokyo, Japan. In the early 80’s, Albert left Ringling Brothers and began per-forming on his own. It was during that time that he met and sub-sequently married his wife, Susan McBerry. Susan was (and still is) a classically trained singer and voice teacher. I attended their wedding, a beautiful Friday night ceremony with a wonderful chorus and singing where they exchanged their wedding vows. Then on Saturday afternoon, they had a second wedding – a marathon Clown Wedding complete with clowns doing all sorts of things (this was inside a church, mind you), Albert fire eating and other assorted merriments and fools. Albert knows the power of dispensing humor and making people laugh. He has toured internationally, performing and teaching physical comedy, clown and mime in the United States, Japan, Canada, Cambodia, Cuba, England and Vietnam. The actor, phys-ical comedian, clown, mime, fire-eater and self-described “professional fool” has spent much of his life sharing smiles, love

and laughter through his clown persona, Clem. Clem has performed and taught physical come-dy. Jesting around the Northwest and beyond, Clem makes “clown rounds” at local hospitals and reaches out to places such as Medical Lake, Clallam Bay, Medical Lake, Purdy, Clallam and other prisons in WA, and the Inchelium Colville Indian Reservation outside Spokane, WA. Albert (and Clem) does “Clown Rounds” at Randall Children’s Hospital in Portland on the Pediat-ric (PED) floors and in the Children’s Emergency Department (CED). He has been working there for about 15 years. He works solo but is part of the staff with support from and to the nurses and doctors. “When people see me with my clown nose on, they react differently than if it were just me,” he says. “I get smiles, waves and hugs—and, remarkably, on occasion, a response from some-one who has not smiled or responded for a long time.” A prescription for Healing Clown medi-cine, which heals from heart to heart, has been dispensed for centuries by jesters worldwide. Albert usually makes his "clown rounds" one or two Sundays a month in PEDS and nights Friday-Monday in CED. These are the times when there is little else going on in the hospital in terms of Child Life support, arts projects, etc. He works all sections of PEDS from PICU (Pediatric Inten-sive Care Units) to 18 year-olds plus with kids (now young adults) living with cancer and other long-term chronic diseases.

Albert says, “When I enter a room, the patient is my primary focus - but I ‘work the room’. Reading an audience is a skill I have de-veloped over time and the audience in the medical environment is different from room to room, from patient to family. There may be siblings, parents, grandparents, and /or friends in the room. I want to get the patient to think of something other than that they are sick in the hospital. I usually teach them how to balance a peacock feather on their hands, elbow, nose, and the edge and end of a paint stick. I might leave bubbles, coloring sheets of me, or show and then teach a teenager a card trick. I give everyone in the room red foam clown noses so when I leave I am leaving a room full of clowns.” “With some kids I build a long-term relationship, or I may see the same child in PEDS and later in CED. One time in CED the mother had a picture of me with her son with a clown nose taken about 5 years earlier. I found it interesting she still had that photo on her

phone. ‘Never underestimate the power of the clown, or the Holy Spirit,’ – but that is another workshop I teach.” “One teenage girl living with cancer loved magic tricks. Every time I went I knew she would de-mand I teach her a new magic trick. One day I was in the middle of teaching her a magic trick when her doctor walked in. She went ballistic telling him to get out of the room – she was learning magic! The doctor was nice enough (and smart enough not to take on this teenager) and left the room. I stayed out of the fight. When I saw him later in the hall, I explained that I did not have time to leave the room or even get into the middle of the "discussion". He thanked me for coming and said I was what she needed at the moment. She later died, as have other patients I have gotten to know. But then we are all going home, some sooner than others.” In the CED, Albert notes the energy in the room can be very different depending upon why the child is there; a fall, a cut, attempted suicide, or some unknown source of pain or fever. Sometimes the level of anxiety can be higher and often it is with the parents. Again he tries to "work the room". “If I hear a child crying I go to that room and try to distract them, as often they are young and not sure what is going on. Bubbles, he says, are wonderful”. A doctor once told Albert, "You are better than morphine!" Albert responded, "Never underestimate the power of the clown." Other times nurses will ask Albert to go with them if they are about to do a procedure on a patient and think a bit of distraction would be useful. Albert finds there are the “moments of grace”. He says “these are moments that you might feel or that the patient feels and you may not be aware of it. Those times when you really know you have caused the energy in the room to "shimmer", or change. Perhaps you realize it as you are walking down the hall still hearing the laughter from the room you just left, or the parent tells you that is the first smile they have seen on their child in days. Sometimes you may not know the moment of grace unless someone tells you later.”

Albert had a mother tell him that he had seen her daughter in PICU about a year earlier. The first day back at school she had to show everyone how to balance a feather on a paint stick. The mother said it had changed her daughter's outlook on her time in the hospital. “So that is why I like this so much creating, sharing, and receiving those moments of grace, just spreading a smile, laugh, or providing distraction one on one or with a small tight group of people.” If you want to read more about Albert’s hospital clown work, see the article in the Hospital Clown Newsletter at http://www.hospitalclown.com/archives/vol-12/clem-all.pdf. On a personal note, my wife had a good friend and classmate from college who was diagnosed with ALS. She lived in Salem, OR. Albert drove down from Portland to surprise her on her 60th birthday party with balloons and red noses for everyone. Though Laurie was confined to a wheel-chair and could no longer speak, she wrote my wife saying that Albert’s appearance at her birthday party was one of the best gifts that she’d ever received. Albert has come to all of our class reunions. Even if you didn’t know him, you’d recognize him by his socks. Classic clown socks in multi-hued stripes. As far as I know, he’s never performed at a re-union, though if pressed he’ll do the off-the-cuff card or magic trick – but no fire-eating. I’ve seen him do that in person and it really is mind-blowing (to use a prop-er 60’s term). Albert has assured me that he’ll be at our 50th Reunion in 2019. We’ll be the only class with a real Class Clown. Article found at: http://ndsa.undgroup.org/s/1210/clubs-classes/2col-grid4-split.aspx?

Rose City Clowns General Meeting Minutes Continued

ETHICS TRAINING Kimberley Eve went over a list of ethics for Rose City Clowns that she adapted from the COAI ethics. A copy will be provided to all via the newsletter. OTHER DISCUSSIONS The new Board plans to investigate providing scholarship funds for camp, background

checks and memberships. COAI memberships are no long required but current members are encouraged to maintain

membership to build on their clowning skills. Also, any break in membership may affect your ability to apply for some contests or benefits.

If we can apply for the Levity Project and win, the process to decide who gets to visit nurs-ing homes has to be fair. Also, we may want someone to talk to us about how to communi-cate with people with dementia.

Kimberley is looking for people who want to appear in one of Wilma’s costumes or to enter-tain. Mark Benthimer will invite magicians and the sandwich board will be used to appeal to the public.

Eight clowns, one dog and one cat are signed up for Candlelighters. The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 pm. Submitted by Janice Johnson, Secretary.
