make what we do on the frontline possible.

Our Hidden Heroes campaign will celebrate the contribution our NCA Family make in ourhospitals and out in the community, ensuring our day to day operations run smoothly.

The Laundry Service Department is based at the Royal Oldham but covers all of thePennine sites of the NCA.

The team provides all of the linen for patient beds and washable curtains along with thesupply and alterations of staff uniforms and scrubs. In conjunction with the transport teamand linen staff, they deliver these items directly to the wards keeping the supply flowingand fully stocked.

They have ensured the service has continued to run throughout the pandemic to provideessential support to our colleagues working on the frontline.

5 minutes with... Wendy Parker

Our new 5 minutes with... feature will giveyou the chance to get to know yourcolleagues across the NCA. This week we asked WendyParker, Senior Clinical Lead andProfessional Lead for Nursing - Community Services Bury, somequestions so you can get to know her a bitbetter. Describe your job in 3 words?

Gratifying, challenging, motivating

What is your career highlight so far?

A few years ago, I managed children’sservices in Bury and I worked with ourDirector of Public Health and Manchester

He was not able to play football or workfor 12 months until stabilised and yet herallied on, remained so positive and is themost resilient person I know. He inspiresme to keep going when things get a bittough and it reminds me every day to begrateful for having my full health. Hispositivity is infectious and to top it all off,he has a wicked sense of humour!

Meal out or takeaway in front of theTV?

That’s a tough one. It has obviously beentakeaways in front of the TV due toCovid 19 but I am now itching to get out toa nice Italian restaurant in differentsurroundings. We were in lockdown for myfirst wedding anniversary in May so thehubby may have somewhere nice lined

University to lead and deliver the researchfeasibility study into the acceptability ofthe new HPV  (cervical cancer) vaccine toteenage girls. Bury was chosen along withone other research site nationally. Wedelivered the programme with a greatuptake rate and success. This waspioneering and innovative work and I wasso very proud of the School Nursingservice.

12 months later, Public Health Englandintroduced the HPV vaccine nationally toall 13 year old girls to prevent cervicalcancer developing in adulthood. I was sovery proud of our achievements. I alwaysremember thinking, wow, all these girls willnow be protected against the majority ofthe Human Papilloma Viruses responsiblefor a type of cancer which devastatesthousands of lives every year. It was worthevery challenge we encountered knowinghow many lives that could be saved.

Who or what inspires you?

My son inspires me every day. Up to theage of 26 he was a very sporty (footballmad!) young man. He became quitepoorly and 18 months ago, he wasdiagnosed with a condition which is quitedifficult to treat in young people.

up! What’s your favourite holidaydestination?

Has to be the Carribean. I love the white, powder sand beaches and the sound ofgentle waves lapping the shore. Thepeople are lovely and so is the food. I lovethe sun and can’t wait to get a holidaybooked maybe for next year (mask andhand gel at the ready!) Who would be your 3 dream dinnerguests?

My best friend whom I have not been ableto see during this pandemic due to hershielding. She lives life to the full (usually)and keeps me on my toes.

David Attenbourough. Is there any remotepart of the world he hasn’t visited and youcould hear all the Planet Earth stories firsthand. It would be amazing. Lee Mack thecomedian/actor. He is so naturallyhilarious and would have everyonelaughing. Laughter is the best tonic andeveryone needs humour and fun in theirlife. It’s what keeps me going!

This involved training and mentoring a local nursery in achieving theirevidence based Communication Friendly Setting (CFSe) status over the last year.

Elklan CFSe accreditation is awarded to Early Years settings (including school nurseryclasses) that have trained and supported all their staff in communication and languagedevelopment. They will have shown evidence of embedding this knowledge in modifyingthe environment, optimising adult interactions with children, using targeted interventionsand implementing a setting communication policy. We recognise that our staff members are more than just our colleagues. Whilst you doamazing things at work, you also do amazing things within your personal lives… and wewant to hear about it.

"Managing the Aspull Juniors Strikers U12's team is something I got into when my eldestson Jacob was showing an interest and the team needed a manager but nobody wasstepping forward.

"I naively thought that it would just be a case of turning up on match days and quite aneasy job but I soon realised it was a massive commitment with training, organisation, managing the kids, and perhaps a lot harder… the parents. It's a labour of love for me;when we started we lost every game and the first year or two was a real struggle. But thekids have stuck together and year on year we are getting better and are hoping to bepromoted to the top division after a great last season, that was unfortunately cut short dueto the COVID pandemic.

"Seeing the lads grow and become really good friends, and the friendships the parentshave formed, is what makes it for me. We may not always win, but we always give 100%and that's why I do it."

You may remember we wrote to you a few weeks ago, asking for designs for a pin badgethat we’ll be issuing to all staff as a memento of the outstanding work we have seen acrossour NCA Family during COVID-19. We were so very impressed with the designs we received – we especially liked the oneshand drawn by your children. There can only be one winner though, and we are pleased to announce the winning designwas created by Emma Carey, Health Visitor, HMR Children’s Community Services.(pictured) The judging panel was impressed with the way Emma’s design cleverly incorporated theNCA Family aspect, our work saving lives and what has become so very present in all ourlives, a face mask! We’ll be keeping the design a secret for now, but congratulations Emma – we can’t wait tosee it printed!

We are now starting to look at how we can help support you within your role as a MentalHealth First Aider so that together we can help support our friends and work colleagues.

We appreciate that the training was only 1 or 2 days and that this means your role is morearound recognising when a person requires help and support and that you have the rightinformation in order to signpost that person to the right help.

We are now starting to develop a resource to help you signpost and advise colleagues andwill send this out to you shortly.  I believe that your role as a Mental Health First Aider ismore important now than it has ever been and will continue to be so as the governmentmoves us further and further out of lockdown.

We would also very much like to offer each Mental Health First Aider an opportunity tobecome a Champion for Mental Health as part of our ‘Time To Change Pledge’ this is aprogramme of work that will destigmatise Mental Health throughout our Trust and ischampioned by our ‘Chief of People’ Nicky Clarke.

Take care and do something good for you today.

From NHS website: Had my surgery 16th March at Salford Royal. Fantastic. All round. Consultant brilliant, skull base nurse brilliant and professional. Nothing too much, always phoning and checking on me as Iwas sent home early due to corona virus only. Ward H4 was brilliant too, very happy patient.

From NHS website: I had to attend the Urgent Care Centre at Rochdale Infirmary today after beingstricken locally with allergic chemosis from Hayfever.
