Today we celebrate the 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time. That means our Liturgi-cal Calendar (Year C) is almost ended. Then we will begin a new liturgical calendar – Year A- with the Advent Season. Every year you may notice that usually toward the end of our liturgical year, our readings always remind us about the end of time.
Last Sunday’s gospel reminded us about the Resurrection and life after death. The Sadduces pointed out the reality that we all will die someday. However, we don’t have to be sad and pessimistic because for us as Christians death is not the end of everything. Jesus reminds us that there is resurrection, there is heaven, there is life after death. And Jesus gives a glimpse of the kind of life that we will have with God in heaven: - we will be like angels.
Todays’ gospel gives us some signs of toward the end of time. There will be tribulations, sufferings and severe situations. So, Jesus reminds us to persevere, to keep our faith and hope alive. Jesus says, "By your perseverance you will secure your lives.".
St James says, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. (James 1:2-4)
St Paul says, “…. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” (Romans 5:3-4)
So, the key word to reflect on this week is “perseverance”. Whatever problems and situations you are facing right now remember this; “by your perseverance you will secure your lives.” I don’t care how many times you fall – what really matters is “will you get up and keep on going? For me, that is what perseverance is. So, sisters and brothers, never give up, refuse to quit, stay committed, stay faithful, keep your faith and hope alive for indeed the best is yet to come. Amen
