A Message from Father Paul

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads of our parish! Today, we stop to say thanks to those men who serve or have served as our dads, grandads, adoptive dads, foster dads, or dad substitutes. May God bless each and every one of you as you strive to be the best possible father you can be. Many of our fathers have passed on to heaven, like my own dad. Remember to say a little prayer for these dads who watch over us from heaven.

This Sunday at the 8:00 a.m. Mass, we welcome some of the runners and walker for today “Father’s Day Father Baker’s 5K run and walk” in South Park. This run was begun by Mickey Kearns, a parishioner here at Our Lady of Victory and now the County Clerk for Erie County, in conjunction with the Lackawanna Chamber of Commerce. All proceeds from this event are donated to the Cause for Canonization of Father Baker. I am grateful to Mickey Kearns for his sponsorship of this event. The run/walk begins at 9:00 a.m. in South Park. This year, Terry Scofidio, the CEO of Baker Victory Services is among the people who will be recognized at the ceremony following the race. (If you are reading this on Saturday evening or early Sunday morning, you may still have time to sign up for the run/walk) – or just come to cheer them on.

Today is the last official day our seminarian, Denning Achidi, will be with us. His “pastoral year” experience concludes this week. After today’s Noon Mass we will host a farewell reception for Denning in the Our Lady of Victory Elementary School cafeteria. All are welcome to attend and wish Denning well as he returns to his formal seminary education. Denning has two more years of seminary studies before his ordination to priesthood. Continue to pray for him as he prepares for ordination. Even though he is from Camaroon, West Africa, he will remain here in Buffalo as a priest.

You may remember Seminarian Mario Racho. Mario is from the Philippines and is studying for priesthood at Christ the King Seminary in East Aurora and will be ordained to serve in the Diocese of Buffalo in the spring of 2019. He will be ordained a deacon on September 15 this fall. Bishop Malone has assigned him to serve his diaconal ministry here at Our Lady of Victory after his September ordination. Mario will be here one weekend a month beginning in October to preach and to perform Baptisms. I greatly appreciate Bishop Malone’s confidence in our parish to have an active role in the preparation of priests for the diocese.

Congratulations to the Class of 2018 from Our Lady of Victory Elementary School who will graduate this Wednesday, June 20. We ask God’s blessing on them as they move on to the next step in their education. We will miss them. I am grateful to our principal, Mrs. Carolyn Kraus, the faculty and staff of our school, for their dedicated work this past year. I am also grateful to all of you in our parish, who, by your regular weekly contributions to our parish collection, make the continued operation of our school passible. Congratulation, Graduates!

At the early June meeting of our parish Council, we selected two new members who will join the Parish Council for a three-year term, beginning in September. I am pleased to announce that Mr. James Sieracki and Mr. Greg Stachowski were selected from among the nominees to fill the vacancies left by two of the Council Members whose terms expired. I welcome them to the Council and look forward to working with them in the coming months.

May Jesus bless you and Our Lady of Victory watch over you.

Father Paul

Sacrament of Baptism: Our Parish offers a special Pre-Baptism preparation program for parents who desire to share their faith with their children. Parents-to-be must attend this class prior to the birth of their child. Baptisms are usually scheduled two times each month. Call the Rectory to register for classes. Godparents must be Confirmed and practicing Catholics. Non-parishioners are required to have a Letter of Recommendation to serve as a sponsor.

Sacrament of Marriage:

To be married in the Basilica, you must be an active parishioner for at least 9 months prior to setting a date. Engaged couples should contact the pastor before making other wedding arrangements. Couples are required to attend a Pre-Cana Conference, or equivalent pre-marriage preparation program.

Letters of Recommendation:

Recommendations to act as sponsors for Baptism or Confirmation can be issued only to registered members of Our Lady of Victory Parish who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation, attend Mass and receive Holy Communion regularly, have their children attending a Catholic school or Religious Education class. If married, the marriage must be in conformity with the regulations of the Catholic Church.

Devotions:

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament begins immediately after the 12:10 p.m. Mass in the Basilica on Fridays and concludes with Benediction at 5:00 p.m.

First Friday:

On the eve of the First Friday of each month there are confessions from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Mass is celebrated at 7:30 p.m. on First Friday.

Care of the Sick:

Please notify the rectory office for a visit to any family member who is sick, in the hospital or confined to home. Regular home Communion visits are usually on the First Friday of the month by a priest, deacon, or minister of the Eucharist.

Tours:

To schedule a tour of Our Lady of Victory Basilica, please contact Dianne Bosinski, Tours & Basilica Programs by email at [email protected] or by phone at (716) 828-9424.

Summary of the Readings Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel, Jesus is presented to us as the master storyteller. He loved to use parables as a tool for comparing one thing to something else. In most of his parables, Jesus revealed who God is by comparing God’s essence or actions with something familiar to his listeners. In the parable of the mustard seed, Jesus proclaims a marvelous and irrefutable truth. His small band of disciples, as insignificant as they may have felt, would one day produce a mighty kingdom whose growth was initiated by God. The seeds of this kingdom were planted by God and it is God who will harvest the fruit brought forth from those seeds. The extent of the growth of God’s kingdom cannot be predicted. We must trust the work of the Master’s hand as we, the mustard plant, grow and grow. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

SUNDAY 06/17/18 OUR LADY OF VICTORY PAGE 4

From the Religious Education Office

High School Confirmation classes are scheduled to begin in July. Please call the Religious Education Office at 828-9437 to register.

Adult Confirmation Classes

There are many adult Catholics who have not been Confirmed. Besides the fact that they have not been received into the full initiation of the Catholic faith, it becomes a problem when they want to serve as godparents/sponsors for Baptism/Confirmation. If you are a practicing adult Catholic (that is, go to Communion, and if married, married according to the rite of the Catholic Church) and have completed high school (high school students should be in our teen Confirmation program) consider attending the five catechism-review classes and receive the Sacrament of Confirmation from Bishop Richard Malone in the Fall. The tentative date for beginning these five classes is Thursday, August 16, from 7:00 to 8:15 p.m. in the Marian Room on the lower level of the Basilica. Please register by calling Father Romulus at 828-9425.

Nicaragua Mission Collection

Ann Marie Zon, missionary in Nicaragua, will visit Our Lady of Victory on Tuesday, July 17. She will speak at the 7:30 p.m. Prayer Group service in the Chapel on the lower level of the Basilica. Beginning at 6:30 p.m. trucks will be in the parking lot to accept your donations of light-weight clothing, footwear, household items, nonperishable food, toys, school supplies, and religious articles as well as medical, hygiene and sewing items. Monetary donations are used for a child’s education, the dairy cow and sheep projects, well-digging and shipping costs. Volunteers are needed to help load donated items on the truck. If you have any question or need more information, please call Pat Jarosz at 675-6680.

Care for Creation Group

The Care for Creation Group is working with the Our Lady of Victory Prayer Group on July 17 at 6:30 to help load donations into the trucks for the Nicaragua Mission. This is a wonderful example of the Mission of the Care for Creation Group which is to recycle, restore, refurbish, repair and restore items in an effort to care for our common home and eliminate waste from being dumped into land fields. We encourage those who want to help sustain our common home for future generations to volunteer with us on July 17 at 6:30 in loading the trucks for the Nicaragua Mission.

SUNDAY 06/17/18 OUR LADY OF VICTORY PAGE 5

Someone’s Trash Can Be Another Person’s Treasure

In celebration of the third anniversary of Pope Francis’ Encyclical Letter On Care for Our Common Home, Laudato Si’, on May 24, 2018, Our Lady of Victory’s St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Care for Creation Group and Our Lady of Victory School students are working together to collect old clocks, watches and rings for restoration and sale at the St. Vincent de Paul Store in downtown Buffalo. This is a wonderful way to repurpose, recycle and reuse items as well as help those in need who are encouraged and able to purchase used items from the St. Vincent de Paul store at a reduced cost.

Recycled cardboard boxes, decorated by the students of Our Lady of Victory School, will be located at each entrance of the Basilica before the Saturday 4:30 Mass through Sunday 4:30 Mass each weekend from Saturday, June 2, through Sunday, June 24, to collect donations of old clocks, watches and rings. Items collected will be delivered to the St. Vincent de Paul Society downtown store by members of the Our Lady of Victory St. Vincent de Paul Conference for restoration. The sale of these items will be used to support the St. Vincent de Paul downtown store.

Fantasy Island Family Picnic

Please join us for this year’s Children’s Liturgy Annual Family Picnic at Fantasy Island. The picnic will take place on Sunday, July 15, from 10:30 a.m. till 10:00 p.m.

The cost this year is $22 per person. Children 2 years and under and our parish Altar Servers are free. Altar server family members are welcome at the fees stated above. All are welcome to attend the picnic, not just those who participate in our Children’s Liturgies. The cost is all inclusive-food, games, prizes, rides and water park. Transportation is on your own.

Tickets are available until June 30. Please contact Tina Hatem at 826-5075 for more information and to buy your tickets.
