Dear Parishioners, In my office is an image of Our Blessed Mother cradling her infant son. She is holding him with an embrace of protection and in her visage there is a sense of sadness and tears. The image was painted by a

parishioner at John of the Cross in remembrance of those who have died at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in Pennsylvania. I love the image because it shows Mary with the tenderness and vulnerability a mother has for those entrusted to her care. Perhaps that is why Respect Life Month coincides with one of the two months dedicated each year to the honor of Mary. As I mentioned last year, this is a time to reflect upon and work for the protection and dignity of all human life. As a reminder of this we have a banner that asks people to look deeply at the faces of humanity. Recognize the pre-ciousness of the unborn and see their humanity. See the beauty of family and celebrate the miracle of life. Recognize that those with disabilities of any kind have equal dignity. See the preciousness of the elderly or infirmed. Appreciate that God’s love transcends race, gender, and cultural. We are all God’s children. Over the next four weeks my mid-week video presentation and my weekend letters on the website will touch up-on various aspects of the Respect and protection of life. The videos will present, in story form, a way to understand and approach each of the topics and the letters will expand on some of the legal and social implication. The first week I will speak about abortion and the protection of life. The second week will be about human relationships in the con-text of human sexuality. The third will speak about the threats to human life in the larger world environment. The fourth week we will deal with end of life issues and the cultural push to legalize euthanasia. All of this will be presented in the context of the church’s moral and pastoral approach. A few details. Since it appears that the number requesting Holy Communion on the tongue is not so large as to interfere with the necessary transition and clean-up between Masses we will offer Holy Communion on the tongue immediately following Holy Communion on the hand, while Mass is still ongoing. The line will form by the Mary statue. Thank you for your patience. We have auto decals and face masks available with the Our Lady of the Woods image. These are free but to de-fray costs we are asking a free will donation of $5.00 or whatever you might wish to contribute. They will be available by the office door. Finally, as the winter season approaches we will be having our Annual Coat Drive sponsored by Family ministry. If you visit the parish website and scroll through the section entitled “Upcoming Events” you will find information. My suspicion is that for the families assisted by Catholic Charities, income levels are down because many have low paying or hourly jobs. Assistance with coats will be a big help. In Christ,

Father Mike

There is no better time to show our pride in our Faith as well as our Parish. As a little fundraiser meant to assist Our Lady of the Woods, we will be selling CAR MAGNETS and WINDOW CLINGS. The magnets and clings will have an image of Our Blessed Mother as well as the name of our Parish. You can email your order to [email protected] Magnets can be dropped off at your home or available for pick up at the church office. If you happen to be at church and want to pur-chase a magnet or cling, they will be available in the office as well. We are asking $5.00 for each.
