Parish Outreach Thanksgiving

Christmas food and giving tree program

This year due to the Covid 19 Pandemic we are making some necessary changes to our holiday giving program to ensure the health and safety of all. This year the holiday food baskets and giving tree gifts will be all gift cards. How do I donate to this program?

1) May we suggest purchasing a $25 supermarket gift card, a gift card to Target, CVS or Marshalls, or write a check to Our Lady of The Snow, and we will purchase the gift card as requested. Drop off in the collection bas-ket at mass, or at the outreach office Monday-Thursday 10am-1pm. (A basket will be outside the outreach door for this purpose) Mail to The Outreach office at Our Lady Of The Snow, 175 Blue Point Avenue, Blue Point, NY 11715.

2) Go online to Our Lady Of The Snow website and virtually donate

using PAY PAL for the desired amount to be used to purchase the gift cards. Go to Outreach heading Go to Giving-Outreach You will see the categories for your donation. We will then purchase the gift card as requested.

We would appreciate these donations as soon as possible to ensure all our families’ needs are met during this very difficult economic time. Please follow us on Facebook at OLS BP for frequent updates to our program. Please call the Outreach Office at 363-2417, Monday through Thursday 10AM - 1PM with any questions or further inquiries or leave a message and we will get back to you ASAP. Thank you for your support of our ministry!

Gospel Reflection: Written by Michael Dawidziak

Scrutinizing today’s scripture readings, our first impression might very well be that “one of these things is not like the others”. In the Old Testament and Gospel readings, we have two stories about people mis-managing wineries. In the middle, we have St. Paul’s letter to the Philippians, which is infused with hope, inspiration and good advice. However, the reading in the middle, that doesn’t seem to fit, serves as a per-fect bridge to the other two. The first and the third readings are about people screwing up...and badly. In both readings the owner of the vineyard is God. I love how Isaiah refers to God as “my friend”. A prophet is somebody who speaks for God but Isaiah goes further than just establishing his position in God’s employ. He calls God “my friend” as a way of saying, “I am on God’s side”. When dealing with the people and things of this world, we should all be constantly asking ourselves if we are doing the same. The people of Israel and Judah, whom Isaiah was addressing, had decidedly not been acting as if they were on God’s side. The Jewish people themselves represent the grapes of the vineyard in this reading. We read that God says that He “planted the choicest vines”. This is high quality stuff. God doesn’t make junk. When Jesus turned the water into wine at Cana, it was of the highest quality. And Jesus, in warning His disciples on whom to trust would also tell them, “You will be able to tell them by their fruits.” (Matthew 7:16) Yet, the vineyard produced “wild grapes”, meaning people who went astray and were not faithful to God’s teaching. The Hebrew word used here literally means “stinking” or sour grapes that have gone bad and are now worthless. God says “judge between me and my vineyard”. God has done everything for the well-being of the vineyard (Israel and Judah). Misfortune has befallen the Jewish people and the message is clear that the fault lies with them and not with God. Before we are too quick to judge them however, con-sider how often we blame God for our misfortunes. In the Gospel reading from Matthew, we read once more of a vineyard. The owner again is God but this time, He’s put people (tenants) in charge of caring for the vineyard. The word tenant signifies someone who dwells somewhere temporarily and not someone who has ownership rights. But these tenants decide to forget all about the rightful owner and act as if he didn’t even exist. They are sent servants (prophets like Isaiah) to remind and warn them about who the true owner is but they reject, mistreat and kill the messengers. Jesus is addressing the Chief Priests and elders of the people with this parable. They have become pride-ful and comfortable with their temporary positions in this world. Because of this, they do not even recog-nize God’s own son, their long-awaited Messiah. They would reject and kill Jesus because they didn’t want their illusory “ownership” of the vineyard to end. In wanting to preserve what they had, they failed to see that the only way to let the good times roll forever is to accept the gift of salvation that Jesus offers. Tragically, you can look around and see that this same attitude is all too common today. Many act as if God doesn’t even exists. They do not accept that this is God’s world and God’s creation. They want to be “in charge”. It’s an illusion that will last only a short time. Jesus’ words to the Jewish leaders echoes through all time and to all people, “the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a peo-ple that will produce its fruit.” After reading about how to do it wrong, St. Paul tells us how to do it right. He tells the Philippians that God is indeed “very near” (verse 5). Know it! Own it! Act like it! After get-ting vivid lessons in how to displease God, St. Paul, in straight forward language, gives them (and us) practical advice on how to act in a way that will be pleasing to God. “Have no anxiety at all”. This is stated not as advice or a suggestion but as a command. You either trust God or you don’t. Acknowledge God as the power behind everything and bring your requests to Him with thanksgiving. Focus on all things that are good for these are from God (good fruits). Not only will this attitude be pleasing to God but you will receive “the peace of God that surpasses all understanding”. And even more, “the God of peace will be with you”. Now that’s how you can always and forever keep the good times rolling.

Faith Formation Program Virtual Until Further Notice

The Faith Formation program will continue fully virtually until further notice. Virtual content started October 1st. Lessons are asynchronous, meaning students can access the material at their own pace in Google Classroom. Lessons are due monthly, exclud-ing special projects. Parents were sent a letter that included Remind Codes for each level and instructions for joining Google Classroom. If your child is in Levels 1 through 5, we ask that a parent complete the lesson with him/her. Levels 6 through 9 can complete the virtual lessons independently. Students are encouraged to check their online Faith Formation classroom at the beginning of each month for new con-tent. We hope to bring the classes and catechists in at some point when it is safe to do so. While parishioners without students in the program cannot join level Google Class-rooms, everyone can still see some of the lessons that students are experiencing by visiting olsvc.blogspot.com. The blog is now an integral part of the Google Class-rooms. My hope is that as parents journey through Faith Formation virtual learning, they will grow closer to God together. Textbook Shift: We are shifting to the use of Bibles rather than textbooks this year. Levels 7 through 9 are to use the Breakthrough Bibles they were given in Level 6 to complete the online assignments. Levels 1 through 6 are being given a Catholic Student Bible that they are to use for all nine levels of instruction. This Bible will be available for pickup at the 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Masses on Sunday, October 18th and Sunday, October 25th. Dur ing these Masses, the presiding pr iest will bless the student Bibles. Bi-ble use is integral to lesson participation. Our vision is that our students will grow in-to these Bibles from Level 1 up, and that by Level 9 they will be very comfortable and familiar with using them. For those who received the Breakthrough Bibles, we will utilize these Bibles within lessons for the remainder of Formation classes, to con-tinue familiarization with Holy Scripture. Parents in Levels 1-6 have been asked to RSVP for the Bible Blessing Mass they plan to attend, so, (for social distancing purposes), we have an understanding of how many people may be at the Masses.
