Salvation In Daily Life This Sunday is the feast of the Holy Family, which comes on the first Sunday a er Christmas Day. Today’s feast celebrates how the humanity of Jesus (including his en re family life) has brought saving significance into the daily rhythms of our human family life. The scriptures offer instruc on and encouragement on how to share—within our families, parish families, and the wider human family—the love that God shares with us in Jesus. Selec ons from Sirach, Psalm 128, and Colossians encourage us to reflect divine love and thus find holiness in all our human rela onships. The reading from Ma hew’s Gospel offers a living example of love in the ac ons Joseph took to protect his young family from danger and to nurture them within the larger family of faith of their me. Saint of the Week: St. Thomas Becket (1118-1170) December 29 To anyone who imagines conflict between religion and poli cs to be a modern phenomenon, history witnesses otherwise. Martyred under Henry VIII in 1535, Thomas More declared, “I die the king’s good servant, but God’s first!” Thomas Becket could have said the same four centuries earlier. As Henry II’s closest friend and trusted chancellor, Becket, the king presumed, could be counted on, if made archbishop, to deliver the church to royal control. But Becket experienced a profound conversion, confirmed by the ordina on liturgy’s rich symbolism of the bishop as Good Shepherd and the church as Bride of Christ. Renouncing secular responsibili es, distribu ng his wealth to the poor, Thomas became the church’s uncompromising champion. Faced with this “new” Becket, the king’s previous friendship turned into a ferocious, almost irra onal hatred. As eight centuries later, Archbishop Romero would be martyred at the altar of Christ’s sacrifice, Becket was slain before the altar of Canterbury Cathedral by royal agents, neither the first nor last good shepherd to lay down his life as the price of freedom for Christ’s church and jus ce for Christ’s sheep. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. New Year Blessing (from the Roman Missal)

May God, the source and origin of all blessing, grant you grace, pour out his blessing in abundance, and keep you safe from harm throughout the year. Amen. May he give you integrity of faith, endurance in hope, and perseverance in charity with holy pa ence to the end. Amen. May he order your days and your deeds in his peace, grant your prayers in this and in every place, and lead you happily to eternal life. Amen. And may the blessing of almighty God, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, come down on you and remain with you for ever. Amen. May God abundantly bless you

throughout 2020. ~ from OLL Clergy and Staff

Sacraments, Liturgy and Prayer Loving Obedience One theme common to all three readings today is obedience. Sirach commends the son who obeys his father. St. Paul tells children to obey their parents “in everything.” And the Gospel shows Joseph obedient to the warnings of the angel. Yet all three put obedience in terms of a larger rela onship. Sirach says that obedience is part of what makes a happy family. Children trust that their parents have good reason for telling them to do something. Children also learn both discipline and how to contribute to family life. St. Paul shows how love of Christ transforms a family. When he talks about wives being subordinate and husbands loving them, he means that husbands and wives should defer to each other and love each other. Parents might look at the gospel for support in encouraging obedience. Families can learn that stressing obedience can protect the child as well as teach. Parents can also remind children that God asks for obedience for our good, not on a whim. When we obey God’s law, we learn to trust God more deeply and to appreciate that God’s law enables us to live more freely. Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Commission on Persons with Disabilities All are Welcome - We have been hearing this in the Catholic Church. Yet, some parents are hesitant or may not know that it is possible for all children with disabili es to receive the Sacraments of Ini a on: Bap sm, Eucharist, and Confirma on. The NCPD states: “All members of the Body of Christ are uniquely called by God by virtue of their Bap sm. In light of this call, the Church seeks to support all in their growth in holiness, and to encourage all in their voca ons. Par cipa ng in, and being nourished by, the grace of the sacraments is essen al to this growth in holiness. Catholic adults and children with disabili es, and their families earnestly desire full and meaningful par cipa on in the sacramental life of the Church.” The Na onal Catholic Partnership on Disability (NCPD) has guidelines and resources readily available to help teach people with disabili es and include them in parish life.
