Reflection for Sunday’s ReadingsMay 12, 2013

The Ascension of the LordLuke 24: 46-53

Adult:Who in your family has the gift of wisdom? How does he orshe use this gift?

Child:Who is the wisest person you know/ What has he or shetaught you?

IS IT HARD FOR YOU TO HEARWHAT IS SAID AT MASS?

If you have a hearing impairment and have difficultyunderstanding what is said during Mass, you might benefitfrom using one of the assisted listening devices (ALDs)located in the sacristy. These devices deliver the speaker’svoice through an earphone, making reduced audibility fromdistance and background noise less of a problem. Thosewho have hearing aids with a telecoil can use one of theneckloops that the parish now offers. Simply disconnectthe earphone from the ALD, plug in the neckloop, place theneckloop around your neck like a necklace, and switch yourhearing aids to t-coil mode. With a neckloop, sound isdelivered directly through both of your hearing aids insteadof through the headphone, and this can result in better soundquality and increased understanding. If you are unsure ifyour hearing aid has a telecoil or are unsure how to accessthe t-coil mode, contact your audiologist. When returningthe device to the sacristy, please remove the loop, return itto the drawer, and connect the earphone back for the nextuser.

A Loose Grip

Professionals say that most golfers grip the club tootightly. You have to loosen your grip. What differencedoes the tightness of the grip make? Simple. It affectsthe rest of the body, even the legs. A loose grip resultsin a fluid swing. And a fluid swing is a powerful swing.

The analogy with stewardship is not subtle. To be tight-fisted with our time and skills and money tightens upeverything else in our life. To loosen our grip by freelyand regularly giving a portion off the top to the Lordbrings a sense of freedom and peace. An excerpt fromThe Little Burgundy Book

What is the secret to living a life dedicated to followingChrist? It is really simple, it is living stewardship.Stewardship is a way of life not a fundraising campaign. It is a conversion of the heart, a way of thinking thatwill lead us to a life committed to following Christ.Everything we have belongs to God, our time, talent, treasure, health, skills and even our personality; weare because God made us. Loosening our grip onunimportant things is a big step. Living a life ofstewardship places us in God’s hands; he guides us,loves us and wants us to come home to him and usingour gifts in this way, allows us to do just that.

CD OF THE WEEK

Change The World In 60 SecondsTom Peterson was an award-winning national advertisingexecutive, but lukewarm in his faith. Then, in 1997, heattended a Catholic men’s retreat. While praying before the BlessedSacrament, he experienced aprofound spiritual transformation anda clear vocational calling. God wasinviting him to use his talents intelevision media for a greater good...to evangelize the world. Soon after,Peterson founded CatholicsComeHome.org andVirtueMedia.org, two educational non-profit mediaapostolates that promote evangelization and the sanctityof life, and are helping hundreds of thousands of souls comehome to the Catholic Church. In this motivating presentation,Tom shares how just 60 seconds can truly change the world, often one life at a time.

WHAWHAWHAWHAWHAT SHOULD T SHOULD T SHOULD T SHOULD T SHOULD WE DO?WE DO?WE DO?WE DO?WE DO?A tornado strikes Hillcrest. An ice storm leaves you isolated, without electricity or phone service. A ruptured gas mainresults in fire and evacuation of your block. While you areattending worship service, a bomb is reported. A shootingoccurs during Harvestfest and the gunman disappears intothe crowd.

While all of us hope that none of these scenarios occur, weall know that similar incidents have occurred in otherneighborhoods like Hillcrest. How would you respond? Howcan you prepare for the unthinkable? What resources areavailable to you and how would you access them?

The Hillcrest Residents Association is sponsoring an “askthe expert” program to help answer those questions at itsDisaster Awareness Day. On Saturday May 18, 2013from 10-12:30 at Pulaski Heights Presbyterian Church, representatives from a wide array of responders andemergency services will present those answers. Entergy,Centerpoint Energy, AT&T, UAMS, MEMS, American RedCross, Little Rock Office of Emergency Management, LittleRock Fire Department, Little Rock Police Department andPulaski County Medical Reserve Corps will offer shortdescriptions of what services they can offer, how you canreceive more information or access those services before, during and after an event and how you can become involvedor help others. There will be a mock scenario discussionand a question session as well as a demonstration on howto pack an emergency kit. Speakers will be availableafterward for individual questions. The churches of Hillcrestwill network regarding their role during a disaster.

This event is open to all. There is no charge. This is a onetime opportunity to empower yourself and your family byattending this information packed event.

For further information contact Dr Karen Konarski-Hart,Secretary of the Hillcrest Residents Association at 258-7757.
