ST. ANTHONY of PADUA was born Fernando Martins in Lisbon, Portugal. He was born into a wealthy family and by the age of fifteen asked to be sent to the Abbey of Santa Cruz in Coimbra, the then capital of Portugal. During his time in the Abbey, he learned theology and Latin. Following his ordination to the priesthood, he was named guest master and was responsible for the abbey's hospitality. When Franciscan friars settled a small hermitage outside Coimbra dedicated to Saint Anthony of Egypt, Fernando felt a longing to join them. Fernando eventually received permission to leave the Abbey so he could join the new Franciscan Order. When he was admitted, he changed his name to Anthony.

ST. BARNABAS: All we know of Barnabas is to be found in the New Testament. A Jew, born in Cyprus and named Joseph, he sold his property, gave the proceeds to the Apostles, who gave him the name Barnabas, and lived in common with the earliest converts to Christianity in Jerusalem. He persuaded the community there to accept Paul as a disciple, was sent to Antioch, Syria, to look into the community there, and brought Paul there from Tarsus.

ST. BONIFACE, born Winfrid in the kingdom of Wessex in Anglo-Saxon England, was a leading figure in the Anglo-Saxon mission to the Germanic parts of the Frankish Empire during the 8th century.

Thank you for your continued support of Our Lady of the Assumption Parish!

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY REFLECTION June 10, 2018

To “do the will of God” demands interior detachment as we search to discern what God is asking of us. It

means that our mind cannot be already made up so that we are trying to change God's mind and everybody else's. We must be willing to give up control, to step out of our preconceived plans, and to stand in the freedom of accepting a "yes"

or a "no". And so we are called to answer the following questions in simplicity and honesty: Am I willing to let go of my prejudices? Am I willing to step outside my preconceived plan? Am I willing to give up control?

OLA’S GOOD SHEPHERD MINISTRY Casserole cooking is a simple way to give of your

time and talent. This ministry provides good, hot meals to our community’s homeless and hungry men, women and children. Come to the Parish Office during regular

business hours to pick up recipes and containers. For more information contact the Parish Office.

LITURGY CORNER

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The cathedral is a treasure in a diocese and in our tradition. It is not simply a “big church,” as some say; some parish churches are larger. What makes a ca-thedral is the presence of the chair, called a cathedra (Latin for seat) reserved for the bishop. There are many instances in our country of a local church (diocese) outgrowing a cathedral. In Baltimore and St. Louis, the former cathedrals are historic treas-ures in the heart of the old city, but new and larger structures now function as the seat of the bishop. When a bishop dies or retires, it is said that “the seat is vacant,” and when the new bishop is installed, the central ritual is the moment when the decree of the Holy Father is read and the new bishop is escorted to the cathedra. No one but the bishop sits in the cathe-dra during a ritual, but in Los Angeles the cathedra in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels is accessible, and no one seems to mind when a visitor tries the ca-thedra out for the bishop’s point of view.

PROMISES Today’s liturgy is full of promises. The reading from Genesis promises a final triumph over the power of sin and a return to a new creation. The reading from Sec-ond Corinthians promises that all who follow Christ will have to struggle. It also promises, however, that we can persevere if we but recognize that Christ is within us, renewing us daily, and giving us the courage and the strength we need to endure. The Gospel promises that doing God’s will makes us “family” with Jesus, who for-gives all sin and triumphs over evil. Today might be a good day for us to make some promises as well. We can promise to stop kidding our-selves about our own tendencies to selfishness and sin. We can promise ourselves to believe—really believe—that while we are not sinless, we are forgiven. We can promise ourselves to combat evil and sin by acting as sisters and brothers not only to the Lord, but to one an-other as well.

ACTIONS Actions speak louder than words; let your words teach and your actions speak.—St. Anthony of Padua

AMERICAN FLAG This flag, which we honor and under which we serve, is the emblem of our unity, our power, our thought and purpose as a nation. It has no other character than that which we give it from generation to generation .—Woodrow Wilson
