From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners: I’d like to share three simple points this week:

May: Honoring our Blessed Mother As we begin the month of May, our parish honors the Blessed Virgin Mary with its annual Crowning ceremony following the 11:00 a.m. Mass. The brief ceremony is enhanced with the participation of our children who received their first Holy Communion on Saturday, April 23. Our Blessed Lady should have a special place in our spiritual life and this month is a privileged time to highlight what Mary means for us. The late Carlo Maria Cardinal Martini of Milan wrote that our devotion to Mary is expressed is three ways: Listen to the Word: Mary made space in her life

so that the Word of God could enter in. She let the word resonate within, from the first words of the angel until the last words of Jesus on the cross. She created a zone of silence within and about her so that she could hear the Word of God.

Say “yes” to God: Mary put herself at the disposition of God’s call. She did not fear to say “yes” to God in her life. In turn, God guided her in his fidelity.

Serve God: Mary adhered to God, allowing him to manifest his reign in her through her humble service, from the Incarnation to the Cross, and in the nascent Church.

Holy Day of Obligation Let us not forget that the Solemnity of the Lord’s Ascension is celebrated this Thursday. It is a holy day of obligation. Please refer to the schedule in this bulletin.

Staff Enrichment Last week, our parish and school office staff attended a day of appreciation and enrichment at The Breakers in Spring Lake! It focused on the unique role office staff contribute to the Church’s mission of evangelization. We might call secretaries and support staff, “ministers of first impressions.” I should like to think that our parish and school staff are both welcoming and helpful to all who phone or visit. I am most grateful to them for all they do for our parish! With affection, Msgr. Gervasio

Music Ministry A Joyous Note!

My letter last week addressed some of the ways we hope to address concerns about our music ministry in response to the recent parishioner surveys. Many suggested that our choir also have an opportunity to sing at St. Anthony Church. We have already implemented a plan to have the choir sing there on the last Saturday of the month. This also provides Carl DiDonato and Rosemary LaMachia, the usual organist and cantor at Saint Anthony an opportunity to minister at Our Lady of Sorrows on those evenings. I am delighted to share that we began this arrangement last week much to the delight of the 4:00 p.m. Mass congregation. In addition to the resounding spontaneous applause, many e-mailed the parish to express their delight and appreciation. They described the choir as being “wonderful,” “uplifting,” and “joyous.” This is a great encouragement to our choir and it is hoped that the choir will see increased growth in numbers and quality! Thanks to all in our music ministry as we look to ways to improve this important aspect of our worship. Msgr. Gervasio

May….Mary’s Month Long tradition dedicates the month of May to our Blessed Mother. Let us keep Our Lady ever before our eyes and in our prayer during this month. Why not include the Holy Rosary, or at least a decade of the Rosary in the our daily prayer? Saturdays are Marian Days—consider coming to Mass on Saturdays at 9:00 a.m. On coming to church, take a moment to pray at Mary’s Shrine.

Please Pray for Our Beloved Deceased

Parish School News Spring, such a busy time! With the lovely spring weather growth and rebirth emerge. As you know, our parish and school children received First Communion last Saturday. Many of you were able to meet our young Communicants during the spring activity of "Sharing Our Bread" under the guidance of our Religious Education Director, Mariyam Francis. The latest edition of The Monitor features an outstanding article and photos. Be sure to read it, and check the additional photos available at The Monitor online resource (www.trentonmonitor.com). Well, our own parish school students have been involved in yet another very special First Communion project. Under the guidance of Grade 2 teachers, Joann Dusenshine and Marlane Schreier (both OLS School alumni!) the children have been spending so much time with Flat Jesus! Flat Jesus is inspired by the children's book, Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown. The original book finds Stanley Lambchop flattened by the bulletin board that hung over his bed! His new altered state allows him to travel the world via mail, and well as to easily slip under doors to visit friends. Our Second Grade students are quickly learning that so too does Flat Jesus travel with them everywhere! The children were each given a flattened picture of Jesus to color and bring along with them on their daily travels. You may have seen Flat Jesus at First Communion. I saw him in the hands of many of the children. As we should as parents and a loving family, many of the moms and dads were carrying Flat Jesus as their child proudly walked down the main aisle of St. Anthony Church to receive. The pictures will tell the really exciting story of the many places the children have visited with Flat Jesus. (Their display boards will be coming into school on the day of our school May Crowning (May 12th at 8:15 a.m.) be sure to stop by to say hello and see the wonderful Flat Jesus displays! The author of Flat Stanley passed away in 2003, but more than 10 new books have been written about Stanley Lambchop and his family and the wonderful things that they do. So too, do we hope that our school children will share their love of Jesus and keep Him with them throughout the years. Our parish school is a very special place for our children to learn, grow and express their faith in an atmosphere of love. Stop by to say hello. Find out how your family can be a part of this. Our tuition is affordable and financial assistance is always available. Keep Jesus with you, just as our school children are doing each day!
