Pastor’s Corner

“Me and my household…We will serve the Lord; We will serve the Lord…Me and my household!”

I can remember as a child the deep yearning and overwhelming expectation I would have for Christmas to arrive. In fact, I would get so excited that I often ended up getting sick.

We are a week away from the celebration of the birth of our Lord and Savior. How excited are we about this great event? And how eager and anxious are we for the Second Coming of Christ?

There is a lot of hype in our consumeristic society for the rapidly approaching ‘holiday’. We can easily get distracted by the secular sensationalism and find ourselves frantically trying to get everything ready for Christmas.

The Church wants to help us stay focused in these last 7 days of Advent, so that we recall who is the reason for the season and detach from the chaos around us and concentrate on the Good News proclaimed by the Lord.

Beginning this Sunday, we start using the “O” Antiphons that accompany the Magnificat canticle of Evening Prayer from December 17-23 in the Liturgy of the Hours (the universal prayer of the Church prayed by priest, religious and the laity throughout the world). Since at least the eighth century the Roman Church has been singing the "O" Antiphons.

They are a magnificent theology that uses ancient biblical imagery drawn from the messianic hopes of the Old Testament to proclaim the coming Christ as the fulfillment not only of Old Testament hopes, but present ones as well. Their repeated use of the imperative "Come!" embodies the longing of all for the Divine Messiah. The antiphons are probably most well know as the verses to the Advent hymn, “O Come, O Come Emanuel” – which is traditionally sung in the last week of the season.

Perhaps we can use this hymn in our homes for the next week, reading (or singing) one verse each day as a family and discussing what the antiphon is teaching us. This would certainly assist us in settling our minds and hearts on the true meaning of Christmas and give us a greater chance of entering into the ‘Christmas spirit’!

Peace, Fr. Nick

RETROUVAILLE FOR TROUBLED MARRIAGES – If there is little or no meaningful communication, if you are frustrated, hurt or angry with each other, if you are considering separation or divorce, Retrouvaille can help. Retrouvaille is a French word meaning “rediscovery” and it helps couples put the pieces back together and rebuild loving relationships. It begins with a weekend experience in which husbands and wives are helped to re-establish communication and to gain new insigh ts into themselves as individuals and as a couple. Dear Friends,

As we have completed the Jubilee of Mercy, I would like to share with you the good works of our students. By the end of October, our families sent in over 1175 shoeboxes filled with Christmas Joy for the Good Samaritan Purse Organization. In October, our school supported the Christina Rush Foundation with a dress down day that collected $1000.00 for women and their families who are living with breast cancer. In conjunction with the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Chapter of the Saint Vincent DePaul Society, our school children collected well over 500 pounds of food for distribution. They also collected needed toiletries for the Mental Health Association of Atlantic County. We have completed our Adopt-a-Family Program. Families from Texas Avenue in Atlantic City were the recipients of our charity. Our school motto is “WE CARE” and I believe that this is not just a motto but a way of life for our school community.

On Thursday, 12/22, our students will be treated to the Annual PTA sponsored Santa Brunch. Along with the Brunch and an opportunity to speak with Santa, the MacNatt family will be providing sleigh rides to all. We so appreciate all that our friends do for our school.

On Friday, December 23rd at 9:00 the student body will come together in celebration at a liturgy led by the 3rd grade students. All are invited to attend.

God bless you, Mary Ellen Schurtz

ASSUMPTION REGIONAL CATHOLIC SCHOOL ANNUAL FUND UPDATE

We are very excited to report that our Annual Fund has received a great start! To date we have raised over $34,000. This year’s goal is $64,000. Our Annual Fund is fundraising that is a sustainable and dependable source of income that supplements tuition. The Annual Fund is the foundation of all our fundraising efforts providing critical funding towards athletic and arts programs, faculty development, facility improvements, technology enhancements and expansions, and new academic and co-curricular programs. Annual Fund gifts help to off-set costs that tuition alone cannot cover. Your Annual Fund gift is a repeatable, sustainable gift – one that we hope we can count on each year. Donations are a measure of the confidence and approval that our supporters have in the work that we are doing. Your donation, no matter how large or small, has the potential to create a significant impact on the education our children deserve. If you or your company are looking to make that final tax donation before the end of the year let us know! All donations to the Annual Fund are 100% tax-deductible. To learn more you can call (609) 652-7134, email [email protected], go to www.arcsgalloway.org and donate on-line or simply send a donation to the school 146 S. Pitney Road, Galloway, NJ 08241.

VOLUNTEERS

We are trying to form a group of reliable volunteers to help with functions when they come up and need to use the schools. The job would require that when needed, you would help set up the tables and chairs and break down when the function is over. If we get enough volunteers, it may work that one group could come to set up and another to break down. We are also looking for someone to head up the committee as the contact. Please think about this and give the office a call if you can help. High School students are welcome. It is something that our parish is in need of and hoping there are people out there who are willing to give of their time.
