PASTOR’S COLUMN

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

“When the great crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem … they took palm branches and went out to meet Him …” John

The Lord comes into the world, He comes to each one of us, to offer us salvation, to carry our sins, to free us from evil and the lies of the devil. As He faces evil, His sufferings are beyond words.

“I gave my back to those who beat me … my face I did not shield from buffets and spitting …” Isaiah

“My soul is sorrowful even to death … “ “Father … all things are possible to you … take this cup away from me …

but not what I will … but what You will …” “See my betrayer is at hand …”

“Peter began to curse and to swear … I do not know this man about whom you are talking ….” “The chief priests accused Him of many things …” “Crucify Him! …”

“Jesus was scourged …” “They kept striking His head … and spitting on Him …”

“Those passing by Jesus on the Cross … reviled Him … and mocked Him …” “My God, my God …why have you forsaken Him? …” “Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last …” Mark

Because He gave His life for us, He is salvation for all.

“God greatly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the Name which is above every Name that at the Name of Jesus every knee should bend …” Philippians

Pay attention to signs of neglect

Neglect is a form of child abuse characterized by a failure to meet a child’s basic needs for nourish-ment, shelter, clothing, healthcare, educa on and so forth. Be on the lookout for signs of neglect in the children you see on a daily basis because if these needs are not met, a child may be suffering physically and emo onally. Some signs of neglect include malnourishment, poor hygiene, and insuffi-cient medical care. For informa on, and a copy of the VIRTUS® ar -cle “The O -Forgo en Type of Abuse: Neglect,” visit h p://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protec ng/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Ar cles.aspx, or call (213) 637-7508. OUR LADY SCHOOL NEWS

My brothers and sisters, It all started on a day like today. Jesus has taken his last trip to Jerusalem. Rather than traveling to Jerusalem, he traveled to his death. The city was full of people who had come for the feasts. Jesus' name was already well-known. His enemies pro-nounced it with rage and menace; friends with enthusiasm. Al-most hidden, mounted on a simple donkey, Jesus enters the city. Rumor is sprinkled like gossip through the streets. People go out to receive Him. There are many sick people who were healed by him: blind, crippled, paralyzed. They all tear off tree branches and throw down their mantles as a sign of respect. They shout with hope. They want that man with a good heart and promises of a better life to be their king. It is just one day of reign. Soon after, on Good Friday, everyone will understand that it was not a material kingdom that the Lord brought. Blessings, Deacon Carlos

CONTRASTS  Jesus’ last days are an experience of contrasts. The man Isaiah describes is courageous in the face of buffets and bea ngs. Jesus will not be disgraced or put to shame. Everything the priests, elders, sol-diers, and friends do is intended to disgrace and shame Jesus. But they fail. Jesus is not without an-guish and sorrow. He knows what it feels like to be abandoned and he expresses that in the garden and on the Cross. Yet s ll Philippians insists that Jesus will be exalted even though humbled and obedient to the point of death. Mark takes Jesus and us back and forth between strength and fear, between cour-age and humilia on, between obedience and an-guish. What are we to make of these contrasts? RECOGNITION  Only a centurion, who with the women looking on from a distance sees Jesus breathe his last, knows what we are to make of this. We are to understand, even before the Resurrec on, that “this man was the Son of God.” How did the cen-turion know? The centurion knew because he stood facing Jesus, watching him, looking into his face as he died. Though everything was done to strip Jesus of his sense of self, never, ever did he give up his complete and to-tal commitment to God his Father. Even in his an-guish and abandonment, he cries out to God. We are le to imagine how his Father answered him, but whatever Jesus heard in his last moments, it le on his face and in his last breath so clear a sign of God’s love that one of his crucifiers recognized who he was. The only thing le to Jesus when he died was the abiding certainty of his Father’s love. That is a certainty that Jesus took with him to his grave and to his resurrec on. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc

¿por qué me has abandonado? …” “Jesús … dando un fuerte grito … expiró …” Marcos
