PASTOR’S COLUMN
Dear Community of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, “The Lord spoke to me … I am sending you to a people hard of face and obstinate of heart…” Ezekiel
Our mission to bring others to God, to Christ, which we received in our Baptism is a glorious mis-sion, but wrought with difficulties and suffering. The evil one will attack us at every opportunity, but we must persevere in the Work of God, by staying close to the Lord in prayer.
“Our eyes are fixed on the Lord … pleading for His mercy …” Psalm 123 We are weak, broken, beset by sin, but God’s grace carries us to pastoral success.
“Three times I begged the Lord about this … that it might leave me … but He said to me … My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness …” 2 Corinthians
We struggle with a weak faith, and doubt afflicts us constantly.
“He was amazed at their lack of faith …” Mark
Lord, we believe, but help our poor faith!
Monsignor Lorenzo

BRUSH UP ON WATER SAFETY SKILLS
Summer is a great me to hit the pool and take a break from the heat. It is important for parents to take a few moments to review swimming and water safety with children. Remind them to put on sun-screen. Sign children up for swim lessons or a water safety class. Remember to use age appropriate flo-ta on devices as needed. To request a copy of the VIRTUS ar cle “Refresh Your Memory About Summer Water Safety,” email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.
SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN
We are on summer break! Over the summer, our school will have the 3rd- 5th grade classrooms, science and art room renovated. The school will also receive new exterior paint and the blacktop
will be repaired.
Our school is currently accepting application for the 2018-2019 school year. We offer tours of the classroom and are available to answer questions. Please call the office for more information.

OUR LADY SCHOOL NEWS
My brothers and sisters, Today's gospel presents a very striking scene, Jesus invites his people, his acquaintances and His preaching draws their a en on in such a way that the a endants were marveled by His doctrine. However, that marvel was not enough for them to believe in, but instead caused a counterproduc ve effect. To the point that they threw him out of the city and took him to a steep slope to throw him out. Why didn’t they believe in him? Why did he fail before his own acquaintances? The reason was that they had a poor concept of them-selves and that poor concept was applied to Christ: they focused on appearances and did not know what was be-hind that human fragility. They did not hear His Words, they just wanted to see extraordinary facts. And they overlook the extraordinary: the Truth of Jesus, his Good News. Blessings, Deacon Carlos

THE FACE OF GOD
God doesn’t want us to sacrifice our own wellbe-ing, but does want us to willingly bring his love to other people. It can be uncomfortable being His lov-ing face to others. This means being pa ent with those who annoy us, kind to those who are de-manding, and forgiving to those who haven’t asked.

FAITH BUILDING
JULY 8, 2018 PAGE 5
WEAK OR STRONG? Is your faith weak or strong? Most of us have mo-ments in which our answer could simply be “Yes!” Faith is not a once-and-for-all thing. Our faith ebbs and flows, along with changes in life circumstances, as we mature and grow in rela onship with Christ and with one another. Pope Francis speaks to this in The Joy of the Gospel, when he encourages us to be open to an encounter with God’s love daily. In these encounters, like the one that the people in the syna-gogue had with Jesus in today’s Gospel, we may be astonished at God’s love and are invited to accept it. Weakness in faith is not always the result of some failure on our part. We may simply be at a cross-roads, at which we cannot clearly see or understand what comes next. It is at such a me that we step out in blind faith with the assurance that God’s love awaits us in every moment. WEAKNESS AND STRENGTH The opposite of strong faith may not be weak-ness, but rather misplacing faith by relying on our-selves, our material possessions, or others. When we think we can do things on our own, we leave li le room for God in our lives. When we develop a false sense of security that is rooted in material things, our trust in Jesus is quite shallow. Growing in faith calls us to rely on God’s great goodness above all things. When we open our minds and hearts and allow ourselves to be astonished at the love and life found in Jesus Christ, we realize that we do not need to rely on ourselves. Saint Paul teaches us a very important lesson about this in his second le er to the Corinthians, in which we hear, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.”
Marcos

NOTICIAS DE LA ESCUELA Mis hermanos y mis hermanas,

HELPFUL HINTS GUIDE
As we approach summer, it might be a good
time to reflect on how our exterior presence
prepares our internal disposition to encounter
the Lord.
We enter God’s house to offer worship and
praise, our attitude and attire should match our
belief that we are encountering a God worthy of
our respect and honor.
