PASTOR’S COLUMN

Dear Community of Our Lady of Perpetual Help,

Life at times can seem so difficult. There are so many challenges that enter our lives. Our health, our relationships, our financial situations, turmoil in society, loneliness, our own personal struggles and so forth. If we are not alert, we can fall into a dark pessimism. It is then, that we want to give up on life. We go through what Elijah goes through.

“This is enough, O Lord! Take my life, for I am no better than my fathers …” 1 Kings

We must fight this temptation that the devil uses against us. He wants us to abandon our faith, our prayer. We must do all to be near God! God knows we are broken people, all He asks is that we stay close to Him. He wants to give us His goodness.

“Taste and see the goodness of the Lord …” Psalm 34

We stay close to God, first, by participating in the Eucharist as much as possible. We draw close to our God by drawing close to the Blessed Mother, to our Saints, to their writings, to the Word and by silent prayer and meditation. We also find God by serving others. The Lord gives us fullness of life.

“I am the Living Bread that came down from Heaven … whoever eats this Bread will live forever … ” John

GRATITUDE, NOT GREED

St. Paul wrote for Chris ans then and now when he warned against greed and materialism,

“For the love of money is the root of all evil” 1 Timothy 6:10

Despite all evidence, many s ll believe money brings happi-

ness, yet gra tude for all we have is the real key to happiness.

Today's readings give us the opportunity to talk about the Eucharist as the Mystery of faith and life of the world. When we ask ourselves about the meaning of it, the first thing that comes to mind is that the Eucharist is the bread of life. We seek the bread of eternal life. Jesus tells the Jews: "Your ancestors ate the manna in the dessert, died... I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever." That is Jesus' final answer.

Educate children to identify risky behavior Recently, abuse against women has been thrust in-to the public spotlight, with the “Me Too” move-ment. It is important for parents/caregivers be aware of risks to girls and risks to boys. Boys and girls both need to be educated on what’s accepta-ble and what’s inappropriate, and how to react if someone does something that crosses the line. It is important for adults to reinforce the message that we must all look for, iden fy, and call a en on to the risky behavior exhibited by any adult toward any child.

FORGIVENESS These days, we find ourselves in a bi erly divided na on and a divided Church. We may see ourselves as both right and righteous, but we need to take a closer look at both ourselves and others before we make judgments. It is certainly possible that we are right and the other side quite wrong, but we must be aware, with humility, that we may be the ones who are wrong about many things. Even if we are in the right, Saint Paul reminds us that “All bi erness, fury, anger, shou ng, and reviling must be removed from you, along with all malice.” To be right is of no consequence if we are constantly condemning and ridiculing our “opponents” in the world and in the Church. “And be kind to one another, compassion-ate, forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in Christ,” says Saint Paul. So “do not grieve the Holy Spirit.” FOOD OF LIFE “Christ loved us and handed himself over for us as a sacrificial offering to God.” Jesus speaks of him-self as the “bread of life.” He teaches that those who come to him are called by God, and that he himself is the only one who has seen God; if we be-lieve, we will be raised on the last day. If we think we are right only because we believe we are right, based on our own knowledge, we kid ourselves. If we believe we are right because we follow the wri ngs of others who boast of their knowledge of God but do not show it in kindness and love for oth-ers, we are fools. If we condemn others because they do not believe as we do, we condemn our-selves for not following the humble and gentle Je-sus. We must be kind, and always remember that “They shall all be taught by God.” Judge not, for as Jesus tells us, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live for-ever . . . whoever believes has eternal life.”

gloria a Dios.
