2 l Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church

Howdy,

Last week I spoke a little about the transition we

are all boing through as we await hearing who

will be your next pastor. What is a “pastor”?

According to the canon law of our Church, a

pastor is entrusted with a parish by the local

bishop and share in the ministry of Christ. A

pastor is called to exercise pastoral care for the

people of the parish by teaching, sanctifying,

and governing with the assistance of other

priests, deacons, and laypeople (Canon 519).

When your new pastor arrives, be patient with

him. It takes a while for a new pastor to learn

the names of parishioners and to become famil-

iar with parish ministries and procedures. Also,

be open to change. Let the new pastor by him-

self. He was sent by the Holy Spirit with unique

and different gifts and talents the he will bring

to you.

Maybe most important, give your new pastor a

chance; don’t believe any negative gossip that

you hear about him. Most of that will be

“grapevine” and vastly exaggerated. Let your

friends know that criticizing a pastor behind his

back is always a mistake.

I know from experience that you will welcome

him with the same love you have shown to me.

Muchas Gracias,

Pax,

Father Mike

servirles a ustedes.

No crean ningún chisme

negativo que escuchen sobre él. Empezarán a

Muchas Gracias.

Paz,

Padre Mike

An Inspirational Story

of Courage

and Compassion

With Speaker and Author

Marty Brounstein

Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at 7 p.m.

St. Thomas More Catholic Church is pleased to host this special

program with storyteller Marty Brounstein, author of Two Among

the Righteous Few: A Story of Courage in the Holocaust. He brings

a true interfaith story of courage, compassion, and rescue about a

Catholic couple in the Netherlands named Frans and Mien Wijnak-

ker. Despite much risk and danger, they saved the lives of over two

dozen Jews during World War II. Marty also has a meaningful

personal connection to this story, which he reveals in his engaging

storytelling presentation.

Now into its 8th year, Marty has been on an unexpected journey of

sharing this special story in a variety of venues in his home base of

the San Francisco Bay Area plus in 15 other cities around the coun-

try. He has come to the Valley for the

8th winter for a speaking series here.

Book signing follows the presentation.

The event is open to the community.

Come hear this inspirational story!

esperar nada a cambio.

ayuda. En respuesta a nuestras oraciones, Jesús

caminará junto a nosotros. Él nos dará todo lo que

necesitamos para obedecer su mandamiento

Most of us like to hear of how loving God is

toward us. We take comfort in knowing that

his mercies are new every morning and his

loving kindness has no end. We hope God

will not judge us according to the wrongs we

have done and will forgive us all our sins.

And yet, we find this same kind of love

nearly impossible to live even with those in

our own house!

What kind of love does God require?

God’s love does not judge our brother’s

heart even though we may find his actions

despicable. God’s love forgives and gives

repeatedly, expecting nothing in return. His

love thinks of good things to do for his ene-

mies and then does them.

The truth is, we simply cannot love the way

Jesus tells us we ought to unless we live in

communion and union with him. Only Jesus

Christ can give us the power to offer the

selfless love he requires.

When we decide to obey him, we’ll ask for

his help. In answer to our prayers Jesus will

walk right alongside us. He will give us eve-

rything we need to obey his command.
