Dear Parishioners:

This weekend, we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. The Feast provides us with an opportuni-ty to reflect upon our own families. The Church tells us that the family is the domestic church; the family is the place where we first and foremost encounter God. It is in the family setting that we first learn how to pray, etc. Here are some Scripture quotes about the family:

Honor your father and mother that your days may be long in the land that the Lord, your

God, is giving you (Exodus 20:12).

Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord (Psalm 127).

My son, keep your father’s commands and do not forsake your mother’s teaching (Proverbs

6:20).

Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the Church and gave Himself up for her

(Ephesians 5:25).

In addition, Pope Francis has spoken about the importance of the family as well:

“The family is the greatest treasure of any country. Let us all work to protect and strengthen this, the cornerstone of our society.”

“A healthy family life requires the use of three phrases: “May I”, “thank you” and “I’m sorry” and never, never end the day without making peace.”

“The perfect family does not exist, nor is there a perfect husband or a perfect wife, and let’s not talk about the mother-in-law! It is just us sinners. If we learn to say: ‘I’m sorry and ask for forgiveness, the marriage will last.”

Families require a lot of work and everyone in the family has a part to play. As we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family, we can all ask ourselves: What am I doing to help my family become a holy family; what am I doing to strengthen the family as a husband/wife, son/daughter, brother/ sister?

Remember: Together, we can do something beautiful for God.

In Christ,

Fr. Brian

PS: Don’t forget to hand in your chances for our 50/50 drawing which will take place after Christmas. Send them in by mail or drop them off at the rectory. As the saying goes,

you have to be in it to win it! So, be in it and win it! Think about giving the chances as a Christmas gift to your family and friends. It will be a nice way to help the parish at the same time. Give them as Christmas gifts to your adult children! The drawing will take after the 12:30pm Mass on Sunday, January 13.

As members of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, we are faced with a challenge that we can only overcome together. As you know from the recent mailing, there are urgent maintenance needs at our convent. It is important that each and every member of the Our Lady of Lourdes Parish family participates in this worthy project. It is only by our generosity in mak-ing a sacrificial gift that we will be able to accomplish our objectives. We have established a goal of $442,000 in order to accomplish our objectives. While this seems like a large amount, participation by all members of the parish family will make this goal not only attainable, but one that we can surpass. If every family pledges $400, after a $40 down payment, your sacrifice would be $1 a day for one year. We can all do that. If you are able to pledge a higher amount, please do so. We’re asking for equal sacrifice, not equal giving.

As you make your gift, please remember…

• Pledges and one time donations are welcomed and greatly appre-ciated.

• Payment reminders will be mailed to you in accordance with your payment plan.

• All contributions are deductible for tax purposes.

• Any questions? Call Fr. Brian at 631-661-3224

Church Census Information The process of updating our Parish Data System information is an ongoing process. We ask that you please submit any recent changes -- address, family members, phone numbers, etc. With your help, our parish data information will be more accurate, and receipt of Parish Offering Envelopes and other church information can be distributed more efficiently. Please mail the information to the Parish Office or email to [email protected].

The Parish Office will close at 3:00pm on Monday, December 31 (New Year’s Eve).

We will be closed on Tuesday, January 1 in observance of New Year’s Day.

The Parish Office will re-open at 9:00am on Wednesday, January 2.

Casa Project Update Thanks to the generous donations to the Casa House in our Narthex, this year we will be able to donate ten (10) ecostoves. Many of the communities we visit in El Salvador cook their meals and warm their homes without proper ventilation. These ecostoves will provide the proper ventilation, and help prevent respiratory ailments. We couldn't do this without support. Our sincere thanks for your generosity.

Next weekend (1/5-1/6) we are asking you to give us your loose change for our Casa Project. Place your donations in the wooden house located in the Narthex of the Church. Again, thank you for your support.

Life Center of Long Island

With winter almost here, the need for children's clothing becomes all the more critical. Our Riverhead Center is in desperate need of clothing, specifically sizes 18 months to 3T, for both boys and girls. We are asking if you could donate new or gently used clothing so that we can best serve the women of Long Island's East End. Our Riverhead location is: 524 E. Main Street, Suite 200, Riverhead, NY 11901

If you cannot donate directly to our Riverhead center, we also have locations in Hempstead, Massapequa, and Deer Park. We may also have a driver willing to come to you! Please call 631-591-9017 for more information. Thank you!

This Christmas, we would especially like to extend a special thank you to the

West Islip Country Fair Committee. Every year, this committee hosts the

annual West Islip Country Fair held on the grounds of the West Islip Public

Library. Each year, this committee makes a monetary donation to the needy of

our community through a donation to our Parish Outreach. This year, the

Committee donated $1,500 to the needy of our community. We are grateful for all the West Islip Country Fair

Committee does to enrich and support both our local and parish communities.

Sharing the Gospel

When Jesus traveled to Jerusa-lem as a 12-year-old young man, He felt completely at home in the Temple. He enjoyed talking to the teachers about His Father in heaven. His questions and His answers showed how much He loved God.

Something to Draw Draw a picture of yourself learning about God with your teacher.

Prayer

Dear Jesus, Help me to feel at home in my church like Jesus did. Amen.

Mission for the Week

Help visitors to your church feel welcomed. As a family or as a class, make cards for visitors, welcoming them to your parish.
