EASTER 2017 - The Power of the Risen Christ and Dramatic Missionary Growth in the
Diocese of Rockville Centre
Dear Friends: As we celebrate Easter with our families and our parish families, we ask the
Risen Lord for a true resurrection of our belief that dramatic missionary growth of the
Catholic Church in the Diocese of Rockville Centre can and will happen.
The courageous Cardinal Van Thuan, who witnessed powerfully to his Catholic faith while
locked for years in a Vietnam prison, described the logic of Christ's resurrection in our lives in this way: "Jesus cast fire
on the earth and He desires the earth to be set ablaze with its brilliant light. You must be the bright flame kindled by ap-
ostolic zeal; from your bright light other torches must be kindled until the whole world is a vast sea of living flame".
Together, let's each one of us be instruments of the Risen Lord who start that "vast sea of living flame" here in the
Church of Rockville Centre, a vast sea of living flame that spreads throughout the Church in the Northeast, around the
country to the whole world.
Consider Katie, a Senior at an Oyster Bay area public high school. She was recently accepted to Notre Dame University
in South Bend and will most likely major in Finance. Notre Dame connects incoming students by Social Media so that
they can interact and get to know each other a bit before they ever set foot on campus. Through a series of online conver-
sations, Katie eloquently witnessed in a natural way to the cosmic power of the Catholic Mass streaming through every
dimension of her life and was able to convince in a gentle and effective way an incoming freshman from Wyoming to
come back to Mass.
When Katie told me this story, I was so deeply moved that this winning and charismatic young woman had heard Pope
Francis' call to be a missionary disciple and was setting an example for both her peers and every generation of Catholics
of how to reach out in faith and in the spirit of the Divine Mercy to others. She was also living the power of Christ's res-
urrection by being the instrument of spiritual resurrection in a young man's life. I can imagine Katie and her classmate
from Wyoming saying a prayer and lighting a candle together- being part of the "vast sea of living flame" at Notre
Dame's mystic Grotto at the center of campus sometime in August when they both arrive on campus.
The story of Katie and her Notre Dame classmate is a moving and inspiring challenge to each one of us to ask people to
come home to their Catholic faith and to invite others to consider the Splendor of Truth and Mercy of our Catholic faith.
This Easter, you and I rediscover the power of Christ's Resurrection in a new and fresh way. A renewed love and confi-
dence in the power of the Risen Christ refreshes and strengthens our marriages, our family relationships and every
friendship we experience in the course of our lives. A rediscovery of the power of Christ's resurrection helps our families
become part of the "vast sea of living flame" that transforms the world and history.
This Easter 2017 we pray together that the light of the Divine Mercy that streams from the glorified wounds of the Risen
Lord may touch the wounds of our families and the wounds of poor families, immigrant and refugee families separated
by long distances and upheaval, families living in the midst of war, oppression and persecution, and families struggling
with drug abuse and the opioid crisis.
Know that as your Shepherd and a Successor of the Apostles what an honor it is to be the servant of each one of your
families as together we embrace the Holy Spirit's call to dramatic missionary growth in the Church of Rockville Centre. ;
Sincerely Yours in Christ,
+John O. Barres

As our wonderful group of “Care Blanket” volunteers continue
to meet on Wednesday mornings from 10:00 - 11:30am at Par-
ish Outreach, the gifts of their love, time and talent in crochet-
ing and knitting beautiful blankets for seriously ill children is
nothing less than a beautiful thing!
Since our group began in November 2009, the completed blan-
ket count stands at 2,303 I’m sure in no time at all we will be
adding to this amazing number. Thank you to our lovely group
of ladies for all the good work you do to bring love and comfort
to many children undergoing cancer care.
Outreach is happy to accept donations of yarns, crochet hooks
or knitting needles in support of this effort.

Paper Goods Drive
On occasion, the people who come to us for food assistance
will ask if we can provide paper products such as toilet pa-
per or paper towels. Food donations, as you know, remain
our first priority! However, it would be a helpful addition to
the folks we serve if we could offer some assistance with
paper goods. If you would consider a donation of toilet pa-
per or paper towels that would be a wonderful thing!
Thank you for all the good that you do!
Ministry of Consolation
Our parish is richly blessed to have gathered a wonderful group of volunteers who make up Our Lady of Lourdes “Ministry of Consolation” team. The most valuable gifts we can give are the gifts that come from the heart. The precious gifts of our time, love and compassion are espe-cially needed during the time of the loss of a loved one.
Created to provide warmth, caring and personal attention to assist families in preparation for the funeral mass, this particular ministry can never have too many helping hands. Whether your interest be that of a Greeter, Lector or EM, please give some thought as to sharing your time and talents and being a part of this ministry’s call to love and care for one another.
Thank you so much to our coordinator, Deacon Frank Gariboldi and all our volunteers for embracing this beau-tiful ministry. Please call Parish Outreach at 516-541-1260 if you would like to volunteer. Thank you for your consideration.

and generosity touch every day, we wish you and your loved ones

A Survivor’s Story of Faith: I Never Truly Lived Until I Lived No More
Join us for an INSPIRATIONAL TALK by Robert Palasciano
SATURDAY, MAY 6TH AT 7:30 PM Our Lady of Lourdes Church
Live Christian Music by Rob McGuffey
A gunman took his life away and God gave it back to him,
but the real story is how he forgave the man who shot him!
Robert Palasciano is an Inspirational Speaker, Author & Life Coach. He currently studies at the School for Missionary Discipleship in the Catholic Diocese of Rock-ville Centre, and teaches 8th grade Religious Education at Our Lady of Mercy in
Hicksville. But more than anything, Robert is a trauma survivor armed with the power of God’s Hope, and on a mission to share this Hope with those who need it even more than he does. Twenty six years ago, on the 333rd day of the year, a gun-man took his life away and God gave it back to him. Robert was shot twice in a bank robbery and for a short time was pronounced clinically dead, but God allowed him to live. In Heaven, he was blessed by Our Lady of Mercy with a divine gift and
given a life-long mission.
During the next 77 days in the Surgical Intensive Care unit at Winthrop Hospital, it was God’s Hope that gave him the strength to overcome the brutal pain. Even to-day, it is the Light of His Hope that helps him battle the emotional and physical pain of that life changing day. This is his purpose, to share Hope and Faith through
his story as a testament to God, so that others might be healed. Like many others, Robert is called to be a witness, a tool for God to work through. He offers his testi-mony to honor Jesus Christ, through whom all things are possible, and as proof that God walks beside us all, each and every day.
His book, From Anger To Enlightenment, A Survivor’s Story of Faith, is the culmina-
tion of how, through the Spirit of The Lord, he turned his pain and anger into un-derstanding and forgiveness for the Olive Skinned Man who shot him. This gripping true story is about Hope, Faith, Anger and Guilt. It’s also about God, Heaven, and the most powerful healing medicine…Forgiveness! It teaches survivors and their families how to heal the emotional scars caused from the effects of Trauma Induced Stress. It includes a 5 STAGE HEALING GUIDE to a peaceful beginning of a new
life, free of pain and anguish. “I never truly lived until I lived no more!”

We wish all visitors and parishioners a Blessed Easter.
Please pray for an end to violence in all its forms.
Spiritual Adoption: Make a personal commitment to pray daily for one unborn child who is in
danger of being aborted. You are asked to ‘spiritually adopt’ one unknown baby and pray that
this child be carried to term and experience the fullness of life as God intended. Daily prayer:
"Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby
that I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion.” (Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen)
Hope and Healing after Abortion: The Sisters of Life host monthly Days of Prayer & Healing, Gatherings, and Hope &
Healing Weekend Retreats. They include witnesses of mercy, Scripture sharing, personal prayer, opportunity for Sacramental
Confession, and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Call 866-575-0075 or email: [email protected]
Rosary and Adoration for Life: Please consider spending time before the Blessed Sacrament and praying the Rosary for the
conversion of hearts and minds so that all might have reverence and respect for the God-given gift of life, from the moment of
conception until natural death. Please pray for an end to violence in all its forms.
Visibility Matters: Weekly prayerful presence Planned Parenthood, Massapequa - Saturdays 10:30am-12pm, 35 Carmans
Rd, Massapequa (across from the mall parking lot). For info: 516-541-8056.
Blocking Funds to PP: The Senate passed HJ Res 43/SJ Res 13 on March 30th with Vice President Pence casting the tie-
breaking vote. If signed by the President, it would allow states to keep Federal Title X funds from Planned Parenthood.
Pay a fine or “donate”: Third-party non-victims often benefit from Department of Justice or EPA suits against banks or cor-
porations. The Feds will say ‘pay a large fine or “donate” half as much’ to an activist group picked by the Justice Department
or the EPA. We must be vigilant of this tactic if Planned Parenthood is defunded.
Blocking Funds from United Nations Population Fund: The administration has withdrawn US funding from UNFPA be-
cause of its participation in China’s forced abortion and involuntary sterilization regime. By invoking the Kemp-Kasten
Amendment, the President and Secretary of State immediately stopped tax dollars from funding the UNFPA. The $32.5 mil-
lion earmarked for UNFPA will now go to the US Agency for International Development (USAID) for ‘family planning and
reproductive health’.
Supreme Court: The Senate voted to confirm Neil Gorsuch’s Supreme Court nomination 54-45. In his book “The Future of
Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia”, Gorsuch wrote, “The intentional taking of human life by private persons is always wrong.”
New York State: The NYS Assembly has passed the Comprehensive Contraception Act (A01378 Cahill). This bill would
require insurers in NY to provide co-pay-free coverage for all FDA-approved contraceptives, including “Emergency Contra-
ceptives” like Plan B. The Assembly also passed the Reproductive Health Act (RHA, A01748 Glick), which would prohibit
parental consent and limits on government funding of abortion. It would allow late term abortions under a broad “health” ex-
ception, and would allow non-physicians to perform abortions. It would also repeal the requirement for a second physician to
be in attendance for all abortions after 20 weeks to provide immediate medical care for any resulting live birth. RHA contains
no conscience protections for pro-life hospitals or health care practitioners. These bills are now in committee in the NYS Sen-
ate. The Legalization of Physician-Assisted Suicide bill (A2383 Paulin) is currently in the Assembly Health Committee.
New undercover video: On March 29th, David Daleiden released a new undercover video that shows a Planned Parenthood
abortionist describing how to deliver aborted babies intact so that their body parts can be harvested. She stated that she “pays
attention to who’s in the room” if the aborted baby shows signs of life. She said, “I gotta worry about my staff and people’s
feelings about it coming out looking like a baby.”
National Right to Life Academy: June 29- August 4, 2017. For more information: www.nrlc.org/academy. The National
Right to Life Academy empowers young pro-life leaders through a 5-week summer course held at NRTL headquarters in
Washington DC. Students are challenged not only in learning the arguments but effective communication skills and grassroots
organizing. Topics include abortion, euthanasia, stem cell research, healthcare, legislative strategy, history of the pro-life
movement, medical ethics, unborn development and lobbying. (Possible 3 college credits.)
