  • Pastor’s Letter Dear Friends, Since I last wrote you, people have been emailing me and telling me what they think of the “proposed” new Mass Schedule. Even though I have gotten a few more negative responses, the vote is overwhelmingly positive to change our Sunday Mass times to 8, 10, and 12 Noon. One parishioner wrote me a very thoughtful letter disagreeing with the Mass times being changed, and I thought he might be speaking for those who have not responded to my call for feedback. I would like to an-

swer his 4 points. 1) Rumor has it that Diane Reeder has been hired and has taken over for Mary Ann Varner. That rumor is false! Diane is no more than a volunteer here at OLL. Why would I hire another person when I am downsizing the Staff? Where do some of you get this stuff? It’s ru-mors like these that can destroy a parish! 2) This Mass time change should have been done a long time ago. I remember when I was at St. Anthony’s 15 years ago, people talking about this. The only reason why these changes were not made was that previous pastors were afraid of the reaction by a small group of people. I want to do what’s best for the whole parish, and I’m sorry that some people are bent out of shape. Do you really think I would impose this new Mass Schedule on OLL if the vast majority of people were against it? If you think that, I am not a very good pastor! 3) We have 3 priests here. Why do we need to cut back on an English Mass? We do not have 3 priests here. We have 2! Fr. Healy is retired and calls his own shots. I’m thankful he is helping us out, but how long is that going to be? That leaves me with 3 English Masses and Father Manuel with 2 Spanish Masses. I have always thought it was better to be proactive rather than to be reactive. Our church holds 1,000 people. We are not getting anywhere close to having 1,000 people at our 4 English Masses. The Mass Schedule will be changing either now or in the not too distant future. Why not change it now? 4) Some other parish, like St. Anthony’s, needs to have a Spanish Mass. Having an-other Spanish Mass would be a financial burden on the parish and would give us the reputation of being a Spanish Parish. Wow! I am dumbfounded on how to respond to this. We are a diverse community and thank God for that. I think of our country’s motto: Out of many, one. That’s what we have here at OLL. When my grandparents came over here from Ireland in 1915, they went to the Irish National Church in San Francisco, St. Patrick’s. After a generation, they began mixing with the general population. My grandparent’s story is your family’s story as well. It takes time. Even now I see more and more Spanish coming to our English Masses. It will hap-pen, but it takes time. I would like to think that OLL is a welcoming community, but when I hear stuff like “we are becoming a Spanish Community”, I sometimes wonder. We are a diverse com-munity, of English and Spanish speakers, who come together every Sunday to listen to God’s Word and receive Him in the Eucharist. God doesn’t concern Himself with differences: all He cares about is what’s in our hearts. I still believe in the goodness of Our Lady of Loretto Parish!

Have a great summer week! Father Brian

  • Queridos Amigos,

Me gustaría

No tenemos 3 sacerdotes aquí. Tenemos 2! Padre Brian
