May 31, 2020 • Pentecost Sunday 3

A Note From The Pastor… This Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost; we recall the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles. It is the fi$ieth day of Easter. The Apostles were Jews, and they would celebrate the Jewish Feast of Weeks on the fi$ieth day a$er Passover. The Feast of Weeks celebrated offering the first fruits of the corn harvest to God, and the giving of the Law to Moses. The OLH Reopening Team and I are working to be cer"fied for Phase I this weekend; we hope to have Confessions on Saturday for ten people. We have enough volunteers to reopen

for Phase I, but I am concerned for Phase II which adds Public Mass because we will have to ensure that we have volunteers for each Mass. Please note that the Archdiocese of Chicago has updated its’ guidelines for volunteers: It is recommended that parishes focus on finding and recrui"ng volunteers that are not older than 65, and without underlying medical condi"ons; however, if individuals in those groups choose to volunteer understanding the inherent risks, they may do so at the discre!on of the Parish Reopening Leadership Team. To begin preparing for Phase II, if you regularly a&end a par"cular Mass and would like to volunteer, please E-mail the Rectory. We need volunteers to serve on our Setup, Gree"ng, and Cleaning Teams. I have listed an overview of the du"es below:

¨ Setup Team: Volunteers will ensure that: all supplies needed for each sacramental celebra"on/gathering are ready for use, entrances and exits are marked and propped physically open prior to a&endees’ arrival/departure, windows are opened, restrooms are stocked and managed, etc. They will ensure hand sani"zer is available, and that pews are marked off according to social distancing guidelines.

¨ Gree"ng Team: Greeters will assist in managing the flow of congregants as they enter the Church, par"cipate in the liturgy/sacrament, and exit the Church. Team members will combine some of the func"ons of an Usher, such as direc"ng par"cipants to appropriate sea"ng/wai"ng areas, but will include addi"onal responsibili"es, including, but not limited to, making sure a&endees use hand sani"zer upon entering, are wearing a mask, and are reminded not to enter if ill. Given the circumstances, Greeters will need to be tac*ul and firm, paying careful a&en"on to all people on-site. To support Parish Greeter Teams, rudimentary training "ps on handling difficult situa"ons will be provided.

¨ Cleaning Team: These volunteers will help maintain and clean essen"al and trafficked areas of the Church before and a$er the Church has been used. Masks and gloves will be provided, if necessary, in addi"on to approved cleaning/disinfec"ng supplies. Per the cer"fica"on process, parishes will need to develop appropriate schedules and verifica"on methods to ensure cleaning occurs at the proper "mes rela"ve to when congregants arrive and leave the Church building.

As we celebrate Pentecost, pray to know where God is leading you, and if the Lord is calling you to serve on one of our Teams; pray also for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the world.

God Bless, Fr. Paul

May 31, 2020 Pentecost Sunday

You can feel so small standing by the seashore. The vastness of all that is before you expands much farther than your eye can see. What is happening on the other side? As "des con"nue to ebb and flow, what occurs as they come and go remains largely a mystery, and the effects of their presence unknown in your sight. Yet, things are moving and changing as you gaze upon the water, as the thumbprint of their presence is le$ behind. The greater the wind and wave, the greater the effect. But even a gentle breeze leaves its’ humble mark upon the seashore on which you stand. The smallest pebble s"ll makes a ripple in the great blue expanse of ocean waters. It doesn’t need to be big. You never know the full impact of your smallest gesture, or simplest of words. A yes or no, agree or disagree, here or there, this or that, can influence "me and history in ways you may never know. The Holy Spirit is like that: fierce and torren"al, and then almost s"ll and silent, crea"ng and recrea"ng nonetheless. Coming as a gentle breeze or a gusty wind, God’s Holy Spirit con"nues to move over, around, and into the waters of our lives. The Spirit brings fruit, and unknown possibili"es to what we humbly bring with us, and that same Spirit eventually brings all to fulfillment in Christ. The first disciples didn’t have much. They possessed simple faith, and a willingness to go into unchartered territory with a love of their friend – God, humble offerings, and a knowledge that they were not alone. This allowed them to do amazing things with very li&le. Do you believe that you are being led, and that you have a purposeful life? We o$en do not realize our value because we do not think that the li&le we have is good enough. How wrong we are! A li&le flour mixed with water, and embraced by a prayer or blessing, transforms simple offerings into the magnificent Eucharis"c presence of God. If the Holy Spirit can do such amazing things with these humble gi$s of the earth, even more can happen with you. Don’t underes"mate the value of the smile you gave a stranger, the door held open for an elderly widow, the listening ear offered to one who was lonely, the tolerance given to the wounded soul who is angry, and the loving shoulder you offered as a cradle under the head of someone in pain. Modest gi$s offered with love can be transformed by the Spirit into wondrous blessings you may never know. It’s Pentecost. Trust. You are not alone. ©LPi

Live The Liturgy – Inspira!on For

The Week With Pentecost, the disciples significantly

changed. They were charged up and ready to go. They received the Holy Spirit, and no longer harbored fear and apprehension. They knew who they were, and what needed to be done. With the peace of the Lord, and the power of the Spirit within them, they set out to do amazing things with simple means. We have received the Holy Spirit as well. What keeps us from truly understanding the mission of Christ, and con"nuing the advancement of the Gospel? Some may think this was a work of the past, and not relevant now. Others may believe that the work set before me is simply about doing what I need to do to merit Heaven, and has li&le to do with my brothers and sisters. Take a good look at the world. More are in need of hearing the Good News than there ever were. We have the power to get up and out and start doing life changing things! ©LPi

RE: Parish Financial Update

Dear Friends,

It is encouraging to see so many people engaged in the life of our Parish, suppor"ng one another during this difficult "me. From our online, livestream Mass a&endance, to con"nued support of our Food Pantry and Helping Hands Programs, as well as par"cipa"on in the online Auc"on Fundraiser for our School, our Parish Family remains united as we bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to our community.

The Finance Council and I want to ensure you have a clear understanding of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on Parish and School opera"ng income and expenses. We project a shor*all in this year’s budgeted income of approximately $50,000 due in some part to reduced weekly collec"ons, but primarily due to the cancella"on of our Annual School Fundraising Auc"on, and the withdrawal of some of our pre-school families during the closure. While our Auc"on is going online this year, we are only expec"ng to net about 1/3 of the profit we normally see, as many of the profits are due to games and alcohol sales on the evening of the event, as well as addi"onal raffle "cket sales at the live event. Many of our Auc"on items would come in closer to the event in the past as well, and some of our previous donors are simply not able to give what they have in the past. Many are small businesses who have a very uncertain future at this point. Our Sunday Collec"ons from March 15th through May 3rd are down approximately 12.6% from the same period last year, which, given the situa"on is not surprising, thanks to many very generous donors who have con"nued to support the Parish at their same or increased levels. We have also lost any Bingo income, and it remains uncertain when the program will be able to re-open as we are certain there will be restric"ons regarding a&endance at any events when things are able to start opening back up.

While we have been able to lower some expenses, such as u"li"es and supplies, the wages and benefits of the Parish and School Employees con"nue to represent the largest share of our opera"ng costs. Our staff are working hard to maintain the life of our Parish and School, while prac"cing the social distancing guidelines, and following the recommenda"ons and requirements of the State and the Archdiocese, and trying to address the needs of our more than 1,600 registered Parish Families and over 270 Students. Please know you can always call or E-mail if you need to speak with someone at the Parish. While you will get an automated voice message if you call, you will be put through to the person you are a&emp"ng to reach at the Parish. All School personnel have Google voice numbers they can be reached at which have been conveyed to the parents.

With the assistance of the Archdiocese of Chicago, our Parish was able to apply for, and receive, a CARES Act Paycheck Protec"on Program Loan. In accordance with the provisions of the Act, we must only use these funds to pay payroll and u"lity expenses over the next two months. Any unused funds will be returned at the end of the two-month loan period. In addi"on, we are hopeful that much of the CARES Act Loan will be forgiven.

The Finance Council and I understand that this is a "me of economic uncertainty, and are truly grateful to those who have been able to con"nue suppor"ng our Parish. We remain one family of faith, and everyone’s contribu"ons of "me, talent, and treasure are vital to the life of our Parish.

May God bless you, your loved ones, and our en"re Our Lady of Humility Family.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Fr. Paul Phil Tobin, Finance Council Noreen Paulsen, Finance Council Steve Johnson, Finance Council Mike Bruno, Finance Council Richard McFarlin, Finance Council LeRoy Shea, Finance Council

Honoring Mary During The Month Of May May is the month of Mary. Behold Mary as your mother, and consider honoring her in a special (perhaps even new) way this May. When you do, she will keep her promise of praying for you, both now, and at the hour of your death. Pray the Rosary: The Rosary is the Marian devo"on par excellence. When people think of Marian devo"on, they usually think of the Rosary. If you do not pray the Rosary regularly, then consider making May the month

when you commit to praying it every day. Pray the Regina Caeli: You might hear Church bells ring daily at 6AM, 12PM – Noon, and 6PM. Those bells indicate the tradi"onal "me of praying the Angelus, a prayer which focuses on the incarna"on. From Easter Sunday through Pentecost, the Regina Caeli replaces the Angelus Prayer. The Regina Caeli focuses on Easter joy, and the resurrec"on of Jesus. Try praying it at least once each day, if not all three "mes. If you cannot observe the tradi"onal Church "mes, then consider praying it before breakfast, lunch, and supper.

Regina Caeli Queen of Heaven, rejoice, Alleluia

The Son, whom you merited to bear, Alleluia Has risen, as He said, Alleluia

Pray for us to God, Alleluia V. Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, Alleluia

R. For the Lord has truly risen, Alleluia Let us Pray: O God, who through the resurrec"on of Your Son Jesus Christ gave rejoicing to the world, grant, we pray, that through His Mother, the Virgin Mary, we may obtain the joys of everlas"ng life. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

A Special Way To Honor Mary In May And For The Summer

May is the month of Mary. Behold Mary as your mother, and consider honoring her in a special new way this May, and enjoy this beau"ful Mary Garden all summer long. When you do, she will keep true to her promise of praying for you both now and at the hour of your death. Below is a special way you can remember Mary: Plant a Mary Garden: At St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in Green Bay, they plant a Mary Garden, using symbolic Marian flowers. Many families have a Mary statue in their front yard, so why not spruce it up with some flowers this year?

Below are 10 flowers most commonly associated with the Blessed Virgin Mary: 1. Rose: Known as the “Queen of Flowers,” the rose represents Mary as Queen of Heaven. The rose is one of

the most beau"ful flowers in all crea"on, but there is also a hidden suffering in their thorns. These thorns remind us that Our Lord Jesus Christ wore a crown of thorns, and gave up His blood for all humanity, and that His Mother, Mary, witnessed this suffering and death first hand at the foot of the cross.

2. Ivy: The evergreen ivy represents Mary’s complete and total faithfulness. She is our greatest example of complete and total faithfulness when it comes to trus"ng in God the Father. We see her complete faithfulness throughout her en"re life, but especially at the Annuncia"on.

3. Lilies: The white lilies (Madonna Lilies) and their beau"ful fragrance, represent Mary’s perfect purity, love, and humility to God’s divine economy. They are o$en seen during the Easter season when they represent the Resurrec"on of Christ.

4. Carna!ons: The pink or red carna"ons represent love and life for Mary. The red carna"ons are also associated with the crucifixion of Our Lord – “love unto death,” which Mary witnessed first-hand with St. John the Apostle by her side. The carna"on is also associated with the Incarna"on of Christ.

5. Baby’s Breath: The blue baby’s breath represents Mary’s innocence and purity. It also can symbolize the breathing of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit overshadowed Mary at the Annuncia"on, and He became her divine spouse.

6. Marigold: The marigold flower is in honor of Mary’s simplicity through her home and family life. The flower also can represent the sorrows of Mary as it is o$en used as a burial fragrance.

7. Violets: The gracefulness, color, sweet smell, and leaves in the shape of hearts, represent the humility, fidelity, and innocence of the Blessed Virgin Mary. These three adjec"ves uniquely describe Mary’s role in Salva"on History.

8. Gladiolus: The gladiolus derives from the La"n term that means, sword. These leaves shaped in the form of swords represent the sorrows that would pierce the heart of Mary as she walked to Calvary with Jesus Christ.

9. Iris: The profound blue color of the iris represents the fidelity of Mary. Its’ blade-shaped verdure symbolized the sorrows that would pierce the heart of Mary – “and a sword will pierce through your own soul also.” This scripture passage is the genesis of the devo"on to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. In France, the iris flower is the “fleur-de-lis”.

10. Blue Columbine: The columbine is a flower composed of petals in a band that appears to look like doves. In regards to the Blessed Virgin Mary, this flower represents her fidelity. Blue is the most common color associated with Mary.

Recognize God In Your Ordinary Moments – We Are Never Alone

My children want my help some"mes, and other "mes, not so much. I remember being a teenager and young adult myself. At "mes, I thought I knew everything. I didn’t need help because I was just so darn smart. Truth is, I needed to find my own way. I needed to stretch my wings, and prove to myself and my family I could fly. I assume that is what is happening with my own children as well. It just seems so different now that I am the parent. Human beings need help. We need community, and we need to rely on one another. At Pentecost, we reflect on Jesus sending to the Church a helper, the Holy Spirit. God interac"ng with us in this manner means we are never truly alone. We focus most of the "me on the Spirit of God as the assistance we need, and we do need Him for sure. However, since it is that very same Spirit that turned us into “Church” from a band of people looking to carry on a$er Jesus’ Ascension, at Pentecost we gained more than divine help: we gained each other. Today, the Church needs help in a profound way. We need to lean on the Holy Spirit to blow through the Church with a profound renewal. But we cannot forget that we have been given each other to lean on as well. We are a gi$ to each other, and together with the Spirit’s help, we are the Body of Christ here on earth. We must be strong and stand for one another. If we do that, this Pentecost will bear fruit that will be with us for many Pentecosts to come. —Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS ©LPi
