Mission Statement Our Lady of Good

Counsel Parish Lawrence ~ Methuen

Our Lady of Good Counsel is a diverse multi-cultural parish serving the Catholic community of Methuen and Lawrence. We are committed

to building a community of faith intent upon God, in unity of mind and heart.

We are a family of believers, joined by our Baptism, and nurtured by the Eucharist.

As children of God, we endeavor to bring the love of Christ to all we meet. We are committed to be the Body of Christ, rooted in the tradition of the Catholic Church. Together we worship

and praise our God. Guided by prayer and the counsel of the Blessed Mother, we minister to the community through faith formation, fellow-

ship, and service. With diligence, compas-sion, and love we endeavor to help others

come to know and love Jesus. Empowered by grace, constant in our mission, we strive to

be led by the Holy Spirit.

May 24, 2020 Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish , Methuen ~ Lawrence Seventh Sunday of Easter

Dear Parishioners, One of the joys of the Easter Season is the intense study of the Gospel of John we undertake at Daily Mass. For weeks now we have been reading the “Last Supper Discourses” the dinnertime conversation between Jesus and His Apostles that are recorded in The Gospel of John Chapters 13-17. I especially recommend Chapter 15 as a way to get a “quick dose of the Love of God”. We should read these words often. Chapter 15 alone provides many passages that are familiar and comforting to us… “I am the Vine and you are the branches”, “As the Father has loved me so I love you; abide in my

love”;” I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.” This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” And this is just a fraction! If you don’t know where to start reading the Bible, start at John 15 and move on from there when you have these beautiful passages firmly planted in your heart! We read today Chapter 17 in John’s Gospel. This Chapter concludes the Last Supper Discourses and if you have a “Red-Letter Bible”, a Bible where all the words of Jesus are printed in red, you would see that this entire Chapter is spoken by Jesus. It is known as the “Priestly Prayer of Jesus”. The Navarre Commentary writes “It is given that name because Jesus addresses his Father in a very moving dialogue in which, as Priest, he offers him the imminent sacrifice of his pas-sion and death. It shows us the essential elements of his redemptive mission and provides us with teaching and a model for our own prayer. “The Lord, the Only-begotten and co-eternal with the Father, could have prayed in silence if neces-sary, but he desired to show himself to the Father in the attitude of a supplicant because he is our Teacher […] Accord-ingly this prayer for his disciples was useful not only to those who heard it, but to all who would read it”. It is significant to note what Jesus is praying for in this prayer He makes; again quoting from the Navarre Commentary on John: “The Priestly Prayer consists of three parts: in the first (vv 1–5) Jesus asks for the glorification of his holy human nature and the acceptance, by the Father of his sacrifice on the cross. In the second part (vv. 6–19) he prays for his disciples, whom he is going to send out into the world to proclaim the redemption which he is now about to accom-plish. And then (vv. 20–26) he prays for unity among all those who will believe in him over the course of the centuries, until they achieve full union with him in heaven.” Unity is one of the fruits of the faith. Love of God leads us to love for each other and love for each other brings unity.

Keep this in mind when there is strife and division in your family. Going to prayer in times that challenge us in our love

and unity as a family, or as a parish, or as a community, or as a people truly does bring great results. You will meet op-

position when you suggest it, but pray anyway being led by your faith and by the Spirit of God who brings all who will

follow into unity and peace. This is why Pope Francis’ invitation a few years ago to the leaders of Israel and Palestine to

“come over to my house and pray” is so powerful and hopeful at the same time. There are no limits to the power of God,

and His Spirit working among us. Imagine that healing that can happen in the Middle East and in the middle of our own

homes and the center of our hearts when we make Jesus’ prayer our own… “Righteous Father, the world…does not

know you, but I know you, and they know that you sent me. I made known to them your name and I will make it known,

that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I in them.”

God Bless, Fr. Chris

This Memorial Day weekend we remember all those who gave their lives in wars and other

hostilities. These are our sons and daughters, our brothers and sisters, our fathers and mothers whose

lives were tragically cut short in violent conflict.

Today we approach the end of the Easter Season we listen to Jesus pray for his

disciples. We hear his disciples’ devotion to pray after Jesus ascended to the Father. May our

prayers today connect us with those who are no longer with us.
