WOMEN’S MINISTRY BOOK STUDY

- SAT, APRIL 16, 10:00AM -

Women’s Ministry Book Study: “The Practice of the Presence of

God” by Br. Lawrence.

This short spiritual classic details how to gain a constant connec-

tion with God. Purchase your copy at Chapters, St Patrick’s Book

Store or Amazon for less than $10.00. It can also be found free

online.

We will meet after 9 am Mass on April 16th in the St Catherine’s Room in the parish basement to share how this book speaks to us.

WHAT TO DO WITH THE PALMS NOW?

At the beginning of Mass on Passion Sunday we processed with palms as a public display of homage and loyalty to Christ our King and Redeemer.

Because the palms are blessed they are now sacramentals, that is “sacred signs instituted by the Church … that prepare [us] to receive the fruit of the sacraments and sanctify different circumstances of life.” (CCC. 1667) Sacramentals should be treated with respect and never be thrown away. Palms may only be burned or buried, although in some homes, palms are made into crosses and placed in prominent places each year.

For the palms that you no longer want, please give them back so that we can burn them to produce ashes to use next Ash Wednes-day. To return your palms in a reverend way, you can place them in the basket that we have provided for this purpose at the main entrance of the church.

Lent is over for another year. But as Father Bryan preached at Easter Vigil, we need to continue on in the Lenten Spirit.

Read Galatians 5:16-26, then reflect about what in you is still in the flesh.

What do you have to do to overcome your flesh? Try to be specific.

READINGS FOR THE

WEEK OF APRIL 4 – 10

INCENSE

Please be aware that incense will be used during the following Masses this month:

Fri, April 6

Tues, April 7

April 3, 2016

Dear Friends,

As of March 31 (the day I’m writing this column) the Canadian government will close the Office of Religious Freedom.

This comes after an attack on Easter Sunday in Pakistan that targeted Christians. Both of these events could be called

‘signs of the times.’ We may have seen this expression before. It is from Vatican II: the document called The Church in

the Modern World (or Gaudium et Spes). It may be worth seeing this brief phrase in its context:

“[T]he Church has always had the duty of scrutinizing the signs of the times and of interpreting them in the light of the

Gospel. Thus, in language intelligible to each generation, she can respond to the perennial questions which men ask

about this present life and the life to come, and about the relationship of the one to the other. We must therefore recog-

nize and understand the world in which we live, its explanations, its longings, and its often dramatic characteris-

tics.” (No. 4)

As we focus more and more on our mission as a parish, one of the skills we must grow in is interpreting the signs of the

times in light of the Gospel. The Church is encouraging us not to hide from what is happening around us but to under-

stand it. In our part of the world, there is a growing secularism that is, at times, hostile to religious belief. This is cou-

pled with the growth of religious violence, a violence that often targets Christians as it did in Pakistan on Easter Sun-

day. The seeming contradiction of these two trends is probably what The Church in the Modern World was referring to

as the ‘dramatic characteristics’ of the world in which we live. We are to do our best to understand the ‘explanations’

and ‘longings’ of our world. Most certainly we will need the Holy Spirit’s help.

Also, because we have a mission to the world, our prayer and discernment must lead us to be ready to respond to the

‘perennial questions’ of the people around us about both “this present life and the life to come.”

Easter is the mystery that shatters darkness and destroys death. We are called to live every day in the light of Easter

morning. Our Easter faith makes us apostles of hope to a world that is more and more desperate. In the power of the

Holy Spirit we can meet the challenges of our times.

Christ is risen!
