En el contexto del Evangelio de Lucas, Jesús va solamente una vez a la Ciudad Santa: la vez decisiva para la historia humana del Cristo y para la historia de la salvación. Para indicar esta última y definitiva etapa de la vida del Señor, san Lucas utiliza varios términos: es una “partida” o un “éxodo”, es una “asunción” y es un “cumplimiento”. Así pues, Lucas da a entender a sus lectores, anticipadamente, cómo interpretar la terrible y escandalosa muerte del Cristo al cual han confiado su propia vida. Él realiza un paso doloroso y difícil de entender, pero “necesario” en la economía de la salvación para llevar a buen éxito (“cumplimiento”) su itinerario hacia la gloria. Toda la narración evangélica lucana es como una larga preparación para los acontecimientos de aquellos últimos días, Jesús los pasa en Jerusalén predicando y haciendo gestos, a veces de tono grandioso (la expulsión de los mercaderes del templo).

PARA REFLEXIONAR Al final de esta lectura, ¿qué sensación prevalece en ti: descanso como fin de la fatiga, admiración por Jesús, dolor por su dolor, alegría por la salvación obtenida? ORACIÓN Dios omnipotente y eterno, que has dado como modelo a los

In the context of the Gospel of Luke, Jesus goes only once to the Holy City: the decisive time for the human history of the Christ and for the history of salvation. To indicate this last and definitive stage of the Lord's life, Luke uses several terms: it is a "departure" or an "exodus", it is an "assumption" and it is a "fulfillment". Thus, Luke gives his readers an early understanding of how to interpret the terrible and scandalous death of the Christ to whom they have entrusted their own lives. He takes a painful step and difficult to understand, but "necessary" in the economy of salvation to bring to success ("fulfillment") his journey to glory. All the evangelical Luke narrative is like a long preparation for the events of those last days, Jesus spends them in Jerusalem preaching and making gestures, sometimes of great tone (the expulsion of merchants from the temple). At the end of this reading, what feeling prevails in you: rest as the end of fatigue, admiration for Jesus, pain for his pain, joy for the salvation obtained? Omnipotent and eternal God, who has given as model to men

Christ your Son, our Savior, made man and humiliated until the death of the cross, make us always bear in mind the great

teaching of his Passion in order to participate in the glory of his Resurrection.

Holy Week observances began in Jerusalem in the earliest days of the Church, when devout people traveled to Jerusalem at Passover to reenact the events of the week leading up to the Resurrection. Egeria was a Christian who traveled widely during the period of 381-385 and wrote about Christian customs and observances in Egypt, Palestine, and Asia Minor. She described how religious tourists to Jerusalem reenacted the events of Holy Week. On Palm Sunday afternoon, the crowds waved palm fronds as they made a procession from the Mount of Olives into the city. Of course, the observances must have begun quite a number of years before Egeria witnessed them, or they wouldn’t have been so elaborate. It’s just that Egeria’s description is the earliest we still have. The tourists took the customs home with them. Holy week observances spread to Spain by the fifth century, to Gaul and England by the early seventh century. They didn’t spread to Rome until the twelfth century. The purpose of Holy Week is to reenact, relive, and participate in the passion of Jesus Christ. Holy Week is the same in the eastern and western Church, but because eastern Christians use the Julian Calendar to calculate Easter, the celebrations occur at different times.

One of the spiritual practices that Christians usually perform during Holy Week is penance, but perhaps it is confused with fasting, abstinence or corporal mortifications. The penance consists in "carrying out an examination of conscience" and having a "firm purpose" of amendment so as not to repeat the same faults. After we confess our sins to a priest, he imposes on us the fulfillment of a penance, which "must be carried out". Each penance will correspond to the mistakes we made. For example, in the case of the robbery, it will be a question of returning the objects, giving alms to the poor. He also suggested doing some kind of mercy work such as helping our friends or relatives in any need they have, visiting relatives or friends who are in hospitals or nursing homes, among other things. In addition, fasting and prayer are forms of spiritual help. In number 1431, the Catechism of the Catholic Church states that penance "is a radical reorientation of all life, a return, a conversion to God with all our heart, a break with sin, an aversion to evil, with disgust towards the bad actions we have committed. " "Conversion is made in daily life through gestures of reconciliation, attention to the poor, exercise and defense of justice and law (cf. Am 5,24; Is 1,17), by the recognition of our faults before the brothers, the fraternal correction, the revision of life, the examination of conscience, the spiritual direction, the acceptance of the sufferings, the suffering of the persecution because of justice. Taking the cross every day and following Jesus is the safest way of penance, "says the numeral 1435.

Una de las prácticas espirituales que los cristianos solemos realizar en Semana Santa es la penitencia, pero tal vez se le confunde con el ayuno, la abstinencia o las mortificaciones corporales. La penitencia consiste en “realizar un examen de conciencia” y tener un “propósito firme” de enmienda para no volver a cometer las mismas faltas. Después que confesamos nuestros pecados a un sacerdote, él nos impone el cumplimiento de una penitencia, la cual "hay que llevarla a cabo”. Cada penitencia corresponderá a los errores que cometimos. Por ejemplo, en el caso del robo, se tratará de devolver los objetos, dar limosna a los pobres. También sugirió realizar alguna obra de misericordia como ayudar a nuestros amigos o familiares en alguna necesidad que tengan, visitar a los parientes o amistades que están en los hospitales o en asilos, entre otras cosas. Además, el ayuno y la oración son formas de ayuda espiritual. En el numeral 1431, el Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica señala que la penitencia “es una reorientación radical de toda la vida, un retorno, una conversión a Dios con todo nuestro corazón, una ruptura con el pecado, una aversión del mal, con repugnancia hacia las malas acciones que hemos cometido”. “La conversión se realiza en la vida cotidiana mediante gestos de reconciliación, la atención a los pobres, el ejercicio y la defensa de la justicia y del derecho (cf Am 5,24; Is1,17), por el reconocimiento de nuestras faltas ante los hermanos, la corrección fraterna, la revisión de vida, el examen de conciencia, la dirección espiritual, la aceptación de los sufrimientos, el padecer la persecución a causa de la justicia. Tomar la cruz cada día y seguir a Jesús es el camino más seguro de la penitencia”, indica el numeral 1435.
