FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents and Parishioners, Last week, two Reviewers spent two days at Our Holy Redeemer in order to conduct an external Review of our school. Madeleine Kelly, Learning & Teaching Consultant Catholic Education Melbourne, joined the lead Reviewer Boyd Jorgensen, from The Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). In the weeks prior to their visit the two Reviewers were provided with numerous documents demonstrating the learning and teaching practices and pedagogy that we strive to achieve at OHR. On the first day of the Review they met with the Leadership Team for two hours. For the remainder of their time at OHR they visited all class teachers, met and spoke with every staff member, and spent time with Father Mark. They also conducted a number of student and parent focus groups. The purpose of all these meetings was to establish a clear line of sight between what is articulated in the school’s documentation, and what could be clearly observed and heard in their two days at OHR. In my weekly Staff News, released last Friday, I wrote: “I would like to begin by sincerely thanking everyone for the part you have played in the National School Improvement Tool (NSIT)* Review process over the past few days. The Reviewers were extremely impressed with your professionalism and the way you addressed their questions, which assisted in providing oversight on how we operate as a school. They were equally impressed by the glowing way in which both the parent and student focus groups spoke about OHR. John Corkill – our school‟s Principal Consultant – worked throughout Thursday afternoon with the two Reviewers to shape the draft of the report. Following school The Leadership Team met with Boyd, Madeleine and John where the draft report was shared. The draft report contained affirmations, commendations and recommendations. Each of the 9 domains is scored on a scale comprising: „Low‟, „Medium‟, „High‟ and ‟Outstanding‟. According to Boyd, only 4% of Australian schools ever manage to score one element in the performance level of „Outstanding‟. We scored five elements in „Outstanding‟, which he stated as being remarkable. In fact, Boyd suggested that it is a champagne moment any time an element falls into „Outstanding‟. The remaining elements, bar one, all fell into the „High‟ category, which is very affirming and says a lot about the culture we have set about collectively establishing with Father Mark and our parent community at OHR.” *The National School Improvement Tool (NSIT) is a relatively new device that Catholic schools may nominate to use in the Review of their school. The Tool brings together findings from international research into the practices of highly effective schools and school leaders. The Tool assists schools to review and reflect on their efforts to improve the quality of classroom teaching and learning. It supports school-wide conversations about aspects of current practice, areas for improvement and evidence that progress is being made. The Tool consists of nine inter-related domains and enables informed judgements to be made in relation to each domain separately. The feedback we receive from this Review will assist OHR over the next four years in giving priority to particular domains in our improvement efforts and, thereby, shape our next School Improvement Plan. For more information on the National School Improvement Tool, go to: https://www.acer.org/au/school-improvement/improvement-tools Senior School Passion Play We warmly invite parents and relatives to attend our annual Passion Play performed in the school grounds by the senior students next Thursday at 9.00am. The tradition of the Passion Play commemorates the events of Christ’s suffering and crucifixion during Holy Week. The students will enact the scenes at various

stations throughout the school grounds. All classes will be visiting, watching and listening to the stories as they unfold. Parents and relatives are invited to accompany us on this journey. We also ask that you respect that this is a quiet and reverent time. The Resurrection will not be enacted until after the Easter holiday break.

Choir Performed at last Monday’s Assembly Our new OHR Choir proudly performed the song ‘Respect‟ during Monday’s Assembly. Over 50 children from Years 1-6 have joined our Choir. In this song, a group of students sang a rap while the main Choir sung the melody. This was a tricky song to perform, however, Mrs Dioguardi demonstrated that she ‘has the knack’ in bringing out the best in each child. The Foodie Festival I am pleased to announce this year’s Foodie Festival Committee is now finalised. The concept that „we can achieve more together‟ is not something new and I would personally like to thank the following parents for putting up their hands.

As a school community, we look forward to supporting each of you in the above areas over the coming months to ensure yet another successful Foodie Festival. If you are interested in supporting any of these roles or would like to get involved, contact Sharon Cheevers via email at [email protected] ANZAC Day Dawn Service The Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre in partnership with the Surrey Hills Progress Association and the Rotary Club of Mont Albert and Surrey Hills is pleased to announce that the 2019 ANZAC Day Dawn Service will take place at the Surrey Gardens at 5.45am arrival for a 6am start on 25 April. Our Holy Redeemer is one of four schools invited to send students to participate in the Service. Our School Captains will read during the Service, while our two Vice Captains will lay a wreath on behalf of the school. All families are invited to attend the Service. Next School Closure Day The next School Closure Day for Staff Professional Learning will be held on Friday 26 April. The staffs from Our Holy Redeemer, Our Lady’s Wattle Park and St Luke’s Blackburn South, will gather together with representatives from Catholic Education Melbourne (CEM) to continue our work under the initiative of the STEM Mathematics Collective. Our work in Mathematics stems from our Annual Action Plan with the following intended outcome and key improvement strategy: Intended Outcome: That numeracy learning growth for all students will improve and they

progress from year to year. Key Improvement Strategy: Build teacher capacity to implement effective and differentiated

learning and teaching based on the use of student data. Note: This will be the last whole staff professional learning day until Term 4.

York Street Pavement Works The council has been cutting up the pavement along sections of York Street near the school property and will be laying new concrete in the coming days. I was advised yesterday that the northern entrance to the school cannot be used for vehicles and/or pedestrian traffic until Monday. Cabrini Emergency Discount Cabrini Hospital has a 50% student discount at Cabrini Emergency should any families need to use this service. This is a free initiative that has been brought to our attention only recently, and is applicable to all schools within a 15km radius of Cabrini Malvern. It has been welcomed by over 100 schools and has been taken up by 90 students in February alone this year. For further details, contact Trish. Last Day of Term This is a final reminder that the children will be dismissed from school at 1.00pm next Friday Wishing you a great weekend, Frank Dame

RE NEWS Sunday Gospel

The liturgy of the Catholic Church provides a framework for reflection which is used by Catholics throughout the world. Each week in the newsletter, you will find the

Sunday Gospel as well as some discussion questions to have with your child/ren. Sacrament of Reconciliation

On Wednesday 20 March a number of our students in Year 3 were joined by other children in the parish to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time. We

congratulate these students for their hard work preparing for this next step in their faith journey. Special mention to the staff and the student‟s families who all worked together in this process.

Lent - Project Compassion

During Term 1 our RE/Social Justice Team will be selling Zooper Dooper icy poles for 50c after school

on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:15 - 3:30pm at the Tuckshop window. All money raised will be donated to Project Compassion. If anybody would

like to donate a pack (or more) of Zooper Doopers please bring them to the Office. We can look after

the freezing for you‼ Senior School Passion Play

The Senior School Passion Play will be presented next Thursday (Thursday 4th April). Everyone is most welcome to join any class as the students watch the play. The first

scene is located at the steps into the hall. Each class moves from one scene to the next - one class at a time. The classes will start at the first scene in 2-3 minute intervals between 9.00am and 9:15am. This year the events depicted come from

Luke‟s Gospel and so the students have been researching information about this Gospel and its author. Feedback from students and parents who have come and

watched this play has always been extremely positive so I encourage you to stay after drop-off and enjoy the play.

The final scene (The Resurrection) will be performed in the Hall at 3:00pm on the first day back next term (23 April).

Class Masses Mass is held in the Church every Wednesday and Friday at 9:15am. Each week some of our young parishioners from OHR will join with Father Mark in celebrating the

9.15am Parish Mass and parents are always welcome. Here is the timetable for the remainder of Term 1:

Nick Byrne, Education in Faith Leader

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke The tax collectors and the sinners were all seeking the company of Jesus to hear what he had to say, and the

Pharisees and the scribes complained. „This man‟ they said „welcomes sinners and eats with them.‟ So he

spoke this parable to them: „A man had two sons. The younger said to his father, “Father, let me have the share of the estate that would

come to me.” So the father divided the property between them. A few days later, the younger son got

together everything he had and left for a distant country where he squandered his money on a life of debauchery.

„When he had spent it all, that country experienced a severe famine, and now he began to feel the pinch, so he hired himself out to one of

the local inhabitants who put him on his farm to feed the pigs. And he would willingly have filled his belly with the husks the pigs were eating but no one offered him anything. Then he came to his senses and said, “How many of my father‟s paid

servants have more food than they want, and here am I dying of hunger! I will leave this place and go to my father and say: Father, I have sinned against heaven and

against you; I no longer deserve to be called your son; treat me as one of your paid servants.” So he left the place and went back to his father. „While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved with pity. He

ran to the boy, clasped him in his arms and kissed him tenderly. Then his son said, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be

called your son.” But the father said to his servants, “Quick! Bring out the best robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the calf we have been fattening, and kill it; we are going to have a feast, a celebration, because

this son of mine was dead and has come back to life; he was lost and is found.” And they began to celebrate.

„Now the elder son was out in the fields, and on his way back, as he drew near the house, he could hear music and dancing. Calling one of the servants he asked what it was all about. “Your brother has come” replied the servant “and your father has

killed the calf we had fattened because he has got him back safe and sound.” He was angry then and refused to go in, and his father came out to plead with him; but he

answered his father, “Look, all these years I have slaved for you and never once disobeyed your orders, yet you never offered me so much as a kid for me to celebrate with my friends. But for this son of yours, when he comes back after

swallowing up your property – he and his women – you kill the calf we had been fattening.”

„The father said, “My son, you are with me always and all I have is yours. But it is only right we should celebrate and rejoice, because your brother here was dead and has come to life; he was lost and is found.”‟

The Gospel of the Lord

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. Who has seen real pigs? What are they like?

2. The boy who left home and spent all his money ended up looking after pigs and wishing he could eat as well as they ate. How sad must he have been?

3. How did his father show he loved his son when he returned home? 4. When we return to God because we are sorry how does God treat us?

RE LEARNING IN 3/4CP

RECONCILIATION During this term we have been exploring the concept of reconciliation in our lives. We have learnt so much. Some of us celebrated our First Reconciliation on Wednesday 20th March. We have learnt:

There are four steps of forgiveness, admit you are wrong, say sorry, to be forgiven, restore the relationship. (Otto, Brenda and Stella)

God will always love us no matter what. ( Alexia, Maddy and Henry)

God will always forgive us. (Daniel Eddy)

Reconciliation is like getting a big hug from Jesus. (Imogen, Matilda and Maddie)

Reconciliation is one of the healing Sacrament. (Will V, Abby and Lizzy)

Reconciliation is a tradition of the Catholic Church. (Remy, Hayden and Lucy)

You are let back into the heart of God through Reconciliation. (Paul, Zac and Will W)

Reconciliation is a time to admit your sins. (Raja, Lucas and Angelina)

I can hardly believe we are almost at the end of term 1 with the Christmas Holiday’s being something of a distant memory. Luckily we have an exciting April School Holiday Program to look forward too. Come along and join in on the fun, make new friends and visit new places.

Important News Aimee, who was working with us temporarily, has now accepted a full time position at AmazingCo . AmazingCo host a

variety of unique, amazing experiences for everyday activities & special occasions, for adults and children. We will be hiring new casual staff to assist us with the upcoming school holiday program and after school care program.

Feedback We have recently had some feedback in regards to having a cut-off date for bookings. Parents have said that they have not used the holiday program recently as they thought they had missed the booking/enrolment dead line. We of course, do not want to lose any of our families and are consistently working towards building a bigger and better program. We will always take more bookings if we have the capacity to do so. We understand that parents are busy and sometimes need to book at the last minute and will be as flexible as we can. We do encourage, that the bulk of our bookings be made early so we can have a good indication of how many children we will have.

Nude Food and sustainability We would like to encourage the children (and parents) to pack snacks and lunches in re-useable containers rather than using glad wrap and plastic bags. We are working on becoming more sustainable in our practices and have already got a composting system for food scraps and a recycling bin for paper, hard plastic and glass. Over the school holidays we will be looking at ways to reduce our waste.

Our last Holiday Program January’s program was a little quieter than usual with some of our excursions being very low in utilisation. Towards the end of the second week it got busier as people returned from holidays. The children really enjoyed Rollerskating and bopping away to all the newest songs. Some even got their faces painted! Disney Day was great! Aimee organised a lot of fun activities including Disney Trivia and Karaoke. Ultimate Games was the most popular of all of our days. 2 Hrs of non-stop WiiU and X-Box fun!

Parent Participation We would like to encourage any of our parents to come along and volunteer at the program. If you have a special skill that you would think any of our children would be interested in please contact us at the program and we would be happy to organise a time for you to come in. We do require any of our volunteers to have a Volunteer WWC.

Operating hours The School Holiday Program will run from Monday 8th April – Thursday 18th April. We will be closed for the Good Friday Public Holiday. Our operating hours over this period are 7:30am to 6:30pm. Children who are dropped off or collected outside these hours will have an additional fee applied as per Service Policy. This fee is $1.00 per minute, per child.

Drop off times: We will be hiring buses for our excursion days. We ask that children be dropped off 30 minutes prior to the scheduled time. This allows time to prepare the children for the excursion, ensure a smooth departure and enables the planned activity to start at the scheduled time. We are unable to wait for children who are running late.

Morning and Afternoon Tea and Lunch: We ask that families pack a little more food for the child/ren as they use up quite a lot of energy and can end up being hungrier than usual. We encourage healthy eating at our program and we encourage parents to support this by providing healthy lunches and snacks. The Program will be providing a nutritional afternoon snack which includes a fresh fruit and vegetable platter and a variety of hot and cold snacks. Please ensure water bottles are packed each day, especially if we are on excursions.

What to wear/bring: As Melbourne’s weather is unpredictable, please ensure children wear appropriate clothing for the day and the activity. All removable clothing needs to be clearly labelled for ease of return. We also prefer covered in shoes, strictly no thongs.

Socks need to be worn to indoor playgrounds such as Rush HQ or Inflatable World. Weather may be cold so please pack a

jacket and wear warm clothes. In summer, makes sure clothing covers the shoulders and your child brings a hat each day. Children who do not bring a hat may be asked to either play in the shade or to stay indoors. Please make sure bikes, scooters and other items coming along for the wheel’s day are roadworthy and safe. All safety gear needs to be worn, including helmets for bike riding and any knee or elbow padding for rollerblading. Children will be unable to participate if adequate safety gear is supplied or if their wheels are un- roadworthy. Fees and booking: Our Fees:

Inday Incursion Excursion

The Child Care subsidy is available to help reduce the cost of fees. The CCS rebate is paid directly to the program and reduces the cost of fees for eligible families. The Child Care Subsidy is means-tested and provides more assistance to low and middle income families. Please apply through Centrelink. To book into the Program you will need to fill out a booking form, and if new to the Program, an Enrolment Application form as well. We are aware that these forms are lengthy, however, it is a requirement of our accreditation and ask for parents understanding. As it is a legal document, if a question does not apply or you only have one emergency contact, please state this on the form. If you do not have an authorised nominee, please DO NOT leave this blank. This section MUST be filled in. If you have no one that you can add please contact Melissa at the program. Fees need to be paid prior to the commencement of the Holiday Program. After making a booking, you will receive a statement with the booked days and total of your account. Please make sure payment is made promptly. We accept cash, cheques and direct transfer as payment. We do not accept credit cards as we do not have this facility. Our banking details are at the bottom of the statement and prefer direct transfer as payment. Our Program is open to all children in the local community, including children outside of OHR. If the Program is fully booked we can place you on a waiting list. Cancellations: We have had some issues in the past in regards to cancellations and parents requesting a refund even though we clearly state, that there are NO refunds if a cancellation is made. Please choose the days you require, carefully, as we do not refund on cancellation. If your child is ill and you can provide a medical certificate, we will happily refund your money.

Please note: a refund is only available for the child who is ill/injured and not available for any siblings that are able to attend the program. It is the responsibility of parents/carers to check all dates and commitments PRIOR to completing a booking form. Please understand that staff are put in an uncomfortable position when approached by parents wanting a refund. If you require additional bookings, after the closure date, please phone the Program (9898 5932) or email [email protected] to see if we have places available. No Jab No Play It is now a requirement that we have an up to date Immunisation Schedule on file at the program. If you have not yet provided this to the program please make sure that you send it in with your booking form. Unfortunately, we will not be able take your booking if we do not have this information. With kind regards, OSHC Team
