Lesson duration

60 minutes

Important teacher advice

Student prior knowledge

Students will need a basic understanding of what an art exhibition looks like.

WALT - We are learning to...

Devise a plan for a Brisbane Roar art exhibition.

WILF - What I’m looking for...

• I know what an art exhibition looks like and what its purpose is.

• I can work in a team and help it come to a consensus.

• I can make suggestions and justify my ideas.

TIB - This is because...

It will give us a coordinated approach to planning for an exhibition we will hold for an audience at the end of this unit.

Lesson preparation

Prior to the lesson teachers should organise the following:

• Teacher information - Sample graphic organiser

• Activity sheet 1.1 - Our exhibition plan - hard copy to each group or interactive pdf version on student computers, laptops or iPads

Visual resources available

The visual resource available to teachers for this lesson is:

• Video - Unit scenario - video outlining your student’s challenge for this unit

• Video 1.1 - This is Football - a brief introduction to football for those students and teachers unfamiliar with the sport - this video can also be used as a scene setter for this unit of work.

Lesson delivery

The following provides you with a suggested plan on how to deliver this lesson. You are encouraged to take a flexible approach and modify this lesson and its timings to suit the needs and abilities of your students.

1. Assemble teams (5 minutes)

Classes that have not completed Our respect rules - Values lesson

Divide the class into six teams. Teams should, where possible, consist of students who do not normally belong to the same friendship group. It is also recommended that each group has a mix of academic abilities and a spread of students with a familiarity of football.

Classes that have completed Our respect rules - Values lesson

If you set the scene for this unit by completing the optional Our respect rules - Values lesson student groups should remain the same as those that were formed during that lesson. These groups should remind themselves of the team rules that they agreed to by reading over their signed agreement.

teaching and learning plan

Unit pathways

There are a range of teaching pathways that you can take in this unit. It is recommended that you review the lesson-by- lesson Unit overview provided to assist you with your forward planning.

Assessment

The Assessment rubric should be discussed with students in the early stages of this unit. You may make changes to this rubric in line with the lessons you decide to cover.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT), media and social media

The use of ICT, media and social media is encouraged in this unit. See ICT, media and social media opportunities for more information.

The scenario

2 . Outline scenario (10 minutes)

At the start of the lesson have the class watch the Video - Unit scenario and (or) read with them the following scenario on interactive whiteboard or projected on a data screen. Be sure to check your students’ level of understanding and clarify any words that are unfamiliar to them.

BRISBANE ROAR GALLERY GOAL

Congratulations! The head body of football in Australia, Football Federation Australia (FFA), has just announced that your class has been successful in its bid to host an Australian football art exhibition at your school.Brisbane Roar play in the Hyundai A-League and Westfield W-League competitions and proudly represent the Queensland region of Australia. They provide an exciting opportunity to watch world class football and have others learn about the history, landmarks and community in the region in which they play.Your team’s brief is to create a new Brisbane Roar logo and mascot mask that depicts the region it represents. You will also plan, promote, manage, run and evaluate an art exhibition at your school that displays your logo and mask designs and teaches others about the Brisbane Roar, the region where they play and the game of football. You will work as event managers, artists, officials, and media during this project so you will all have to make sure you work as a team.

3. Consider exhibition elements (10 minutes)

Start by using a graphic organiser (see Teacher information – Sample graphic organiser) to brainstorm with your class the questions: What is an art exhibition? What is its purpose? What are the elements of an art exhibition?

Students may have had some of their work appear in class exhibitions before. In fact if they look around the classroom they might find that some of their work is currently being exhibited. During this exercise you should focus on the elements that make up an exhibition.

What is an art exhibition? What are the elements of an art exhibition?

Student responses might include:

• a place that shows a range of art work

• a place where artists present their work

• a place where an interested audience gathers

• a large space for display

• music to communicate art themes

• hospitality and food and drink

• invitations are sent out

• dance performances to communicate art themes

• information and thank you speeches

• special guests/judging panel

• audio visual presentations.

What is its purpose?

Student responses might include:

• to present an artist’s interpretation of group, culture, person, event etc

• to communicate a message or idea to others

• artists selling their work

• promoting an event

• to entertain others.

4. The planning process (35 minutes)

Ask students to refer to Activity sheet 1.1 - Our exhibition plan - hard copy to each group or projected on the interactive whiteboard, student laptop or iPad. Using the opening discussion as stimulus ask students to discuss and consider each question about their proposed event.

Explain to students that they will need to complete this task by the next lesson where they will be asked to justify their responses to the class.

An alternative for teachers

As an alternative teachers may choose to empower students and give them full ownership of the event by leaving the Activity sheet 1.1 - Our exhibition plan blank for students to complete.

Teachers may use the content of the activity sheet as a guide and (or) as points for students to consider if needed.
