CHRIST’S PRESENCE IN THE WORLD
There’s a bit of a “missing link” in the first two sentences of today’s Gospel from Mark. In the first, the apostles return from having been sent out on a mission two by two (“one who is sent” is the meaning of “apostle”). Their instructions were to preach repentance, drive out demons, and heal the sick in Jesus’ name. In the second sentence, Jesus tells them to come away with him and rest a while. It would be nice for us to imagine that, between those two sentences, a look of amazed gratitude and pleasure crossed the face of Jesus as he hears of the kingdom proclaimed in his name, and how they didn’t have to shake the dust off their feet anywhere. They deserved a rest! It might not be bad for us, when we gather together with Jesus as the apostles do today, to do this kind of debriefing, allowing the Lord to hear what
we’ve sought to do in his name, our successes, our failures, our need to get away with him for a while to be fortified for further work in God’s name. For we, the baptized, are not only the flock of Jesus Christ; through water and the power of the Spirit we have also become the Body of Christ, the presence of the Shepherd for the life of the world. HOW DO WE HEAR GOD
SPEAK? This is a question that comes up quite often in Christian circles. Back in the Old Testament there was this prophet by the name of Elijah. He had slain all the prophets who were serving Ahab and his wife Jezebel. Because of this his life was in danger and he had fled to a cave in the mountains.
Elijah was told by God to leave the cave and go stand on the mountain and wait for God to pass by. Four things happened. First a strong wind went by. It was not the Lord. Then an earthquake happened. The Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake a fire appeared but the Lord was not in the fire. Finally a whisper was heard and Elijah knew it was the Lord.
The Lord says be still and know that I AM. In our fast paced lives we have a hard time sitting still and tuning into God's frequency. Jesus said I shall never leave you or forsake you. He is always with us and lives in us once we are baptized.
Our mission here at the Inner-Healing Ministry is to help you be still and listen to God. You will be amazed at how much he loves you. If you are having trouble hearing God please call for an appointment. 530.588.4386

RCIA
Have you been visiting the Catholic Church as a visitor? Do you come to Mass with family and/or friends but have never been Baptized or Confirmed in the Catholic faith? Welcome! We have a place for you to inquire and learn more about the Catholic faith if you have been thinking about joining the Church. This opportunity to learn about our faith is not a commitment to join the Church. It is an opportunity to get answers to your questions and consider a Journey of Faith through the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) process. For information, call the Religious Education office, 345-6201.
Regular RCIA classes will begin
on Thursday, September 10th and
will meet Thursday evenings from
6:00 pm to 7:30 pm.
Hospital Ministry One of the most fulfilling ministries is that of Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist to hospitalized patients (bringing Communion to hospital patients). We are looking for individuals who would be interested in volunteering one morning a week (roughly 1-3 hours) or every other week, to those
who are hospitalized at Enloe Hospital. We are planning a training meeting this fall at ODS with Fr. Francis Stevenson and other trained ministers. You do not need experience in the medical field to do this ministry. Please feel free to call Gail Boswell @891-
4709 or the parish office at Our Divine Savior at 343-4248 and someone will get back to you.

St. Vincent de Paul
In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples to “Come away by
yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while”. Vincent de Paul, a great man of action was also a contemplative. His
contemplation of God’s love overflowed into practical love for the poor. Do you consider yourself a naturally caring, compassionate and
giving person? If so, come and share
your gifts with people in need by
joining the Society of St. Vincent de
Paul. Please call 680-7917
Reflections
GOOD EXAMPLE, BEST
EXAMPLE: No matter what your background, if you have grown into a person of faith there is usually someone whose example you followed: a priest, godly teacher, devout parent. That person helped you learn what a child of God could and should be. And if you have rejected God, there is most likely a failed example you remember, someone whose life and words harmed, betrayed or deceived you. How wonderful it would be to have only good examples here on earth and none of the harmful ones to lead us astray.
In Mark 6:30-34, we are reminded that God has given us the a trustworthy, divine example to follow: Jesus. He called us “sheep without a shepherd,” not because the Shepherd had disappeared, but because we forget to look to Him. It’s easier to watch the people around us, than to keep our ears
and eyes tuned to God and trusting Him alone to guide us. Take a moment in prayer today to consider who you’re following: a good example, or the best example?
LOVING SHEPHERD
Loving shepherd ever near
Teach your lamb your voice to hear
Suffer not my steps to stray
From the straight and narrow way
PRAYER OF THE FLOCK: Lord, We are your people, the sheep of your flock. Heal the sheep who are wounded, touch the sheep who are in pain, clean the sheep who are soiled, warm the lambs who are cold. Help us to know the Father's love through Jesus the shepherd and through the Spirit. Help us to lift up that love, and show it all over this land. Help us to build love on justice and justice on love. Help us to believe mightily, hope joyfully, love divinely. Renew us that we may help renew the face of the earth. Amen.

Prayers for the Sick
Have you ever been on the receiving end of the
prayers of the church family? If you have, you can
truly appreciate the power of prayer. Sometimes
when we are ill, it seems that we can't even gather
our thoughts enough to pray for ourselves. Often
the prayers of others are the way we come to the
"peace that passes understanding" and are finally
able to accept whatever challenge we face with
the sure awareness that God and our brothers
and sisters in faith are with us.
It has been said that prayer changes things. It can
and it does, but often what changes isn't so much
our circumstance as the way we perceive the
difficulty. Prayer changes hearts. It changes our
stubborn wills, which are so used to being "in
control" and in charge of our lives, and teaches us
to rely on God rather than ourselves. It changes
the heart of the pray-er, to become more
generous and compassionate to those in need.
Each week our bulletin includes a section for
prayer requests for the sick. We become aware of
those in our faith family who need prayer and
may be able to make a call or a visit along with
sending our prayers on their behalf.
Recently one of those on the Prayer Request list
said that he wanted to personally thank every
person who had prayed for him during his health
crisis because he could feel the prayers and
protection. Thank you, always, for praying!
