Welcome to the 2015 Oundle International Festival, our annual summer celebration of the good things in life: music, theatre, cinema, food and the great outdoors! It is a time to come together and enjoy the amazing breadth of events we bring to Oundle from around the globe as well as appreciate the enormous amount of home-grown talent we have on our doorstep.

We celebrate gifted young people, explore our local area and voyage much further afi eld from the tango beat of Buenos Aires to our own capital via the sumptuousness of renaissance Venice. We can singalonga to the iconic The Sound of Music and enjoy a night at the opera with an encore screening of The Pirates of Penzance, and the festival begins this year with a splash of magic from family theatre company Illyria with The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.

Our grand fi nale is when the centre of Oundle gives itself over to the annual Food Festival which is followed by a sensational Party at the Wharf culminating in a spectacular laser show.

None of this would be possible without your commitment and support, nor without the unstinting hard work of the OIF team to whom we all owe a huge thank you.

I think there is something for everyone in the 2015 Oundle International Festival to enjoy, but I also hope that you will also be persuaded to try something new and different: who knows, you might discover a whole new world of adventure!

Back by popular demand, Illyria returns with the story of the original boy-wizard, most famously told in Disney’s Fantasia featuring Mickey Mouse. Bored of his chores, the sorcerer’s apprentice waves his wand and a broom magically fetches water. But he can’t find a spell to stop it. In desperation he saws it in half - and everything spirals out of control…

This show features a HUGE amount of water! There’s a spectacular set from the designer of George’s Marvellous Medicine, amazing effects from the set builders of The Twits, the original music by Paul Dukas (as used in Fantasia) - and eye-popping magic illusions created by the world famous illusionist Paul Daniels. We dare you to sit in the splash zone! Come and enjoy a summer’s afternoon of magical family fun for all aged 5+!

The National Youth Jazz Orchestra is world-famous as a glittering showcase for the country’s best young musicians. Since NYJO’s founding, by Bill Ashton OBE in 1965, most of the current generation of top British jazz musicians have risen through its ranks, often becoming well known jazz stars whilst still playing with the band.

The programme celebrates NYJO’s 50th birthday and will feature well-known classics from the big band repertoire, contemporary work by leading international composers and originals by members of the band.

Including works by Astor Piazzolla, Ramiro Gallo and Frédéric Devreese, let the passion of tango transport you to a hot, sultry summer’s evening on the streets of Buenos Aires!

The Deco Ensemble’s repertoire is a crossover between jazz, classical and world music with an unusual combination of instruments including accordion, violin, piano, guitar and double bass which bring a huge range of sounds to their music.


After his much younger girlfriend leaves him for a better looking, richer, more successful friend, Searles dissolves into a gibbering, chain-smoking, suicidal-insomniac. He resorts to the latest new-age therapy - EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) - in a voyage of self re-discovery where buried memories of past relationships, one-night stands and a very confused childhood all come bubbling to the surface with hilarious, painful and revelatory results.

Themed ‘Cultivation, Conservation and Contemplation’, Transition Oundle, Oundle Primary School and the Oundle International Festival invite you to visit some of the town’s home, school and community gardens. RIVERLANDS7.00pm OUNDLE WHARF


Set on the very banks of the River Nene itself, with the performers on a fl oating stage, this magical evening tells the story of the river as it journeys to the sea. Performed by storyteller Jo Blake Cave and poet Jo Bell (UK Canal Laureate), foxes, kingfi shers, narrowboaters and anglers speak for the river in a mesmerising mixture of story and poem, mythology and history. They are joined by musical duo Gregg Cave (guitar/vocals) and Nick Ellison (fi ddle) who will perform a selection of original and traditional material drawn from or inspired by Northamptonshire.

The Shee is an exceptional six piece, all-female band. Their diverse range of individual musical influences combine to produce an adventurous brew of Folk, Gaelic and Bluegrass, earning them considerable recognition with high profile performances at festivals including Cambridge and Celtic Connections, as well as concerts across Europe and Canada.

Full of zest, zing and zip, this all-female Scots-English sextet have a lot more going for them than just high-level musicianship and the ability to play fast. Whether it’s Scots, Gaelic, Bluegrass or Scandinavian music – once a tune has gone through the “Sheemachine”, it’s theirs!

In a first for the Oundle International Festival, we are screening an encore performance of English National Opera’s dazzling new production of the Gilbert and Sullivan comic masterpiece which includes all-time favourites A Policeman’s Lot is Not a Happy One and I am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General.

The superb cast includes the ever-versatile Andrew Shore as the Major-General, Jonathan Lemalu as the affectionate parody of the British bobby, Robert Murray as the innocent pirate-apprentice Frederic, and Rebecca de Pont Davies as the older woman who has designs on him. Mike Leigh (Palme d’Or winner and five times Oscar nominee) directs his first ever opera for the stage; David Parry conducts.

A late-night recital by the brilliant French organist, Frédéric Blanc, designed to show off the versatility of the Frobenius organ. His programme ranges from the Baroque to the contemporary and, as well as music by Buxtehude, Handel and Lefébure-Wély and others, Frédéric will treat us to one of his famous improvisations.

A much-anticipated lunchtime recital by internationally renowned concert organist and Director of Oundle for Organists, Ann Elise Smoot. Her programme will include the world premier of a piece by Francis Grier, commissioned by Oundle Music Trust for the Orgelbüchlein Project.

Inspired by J S Bach’s 200 mile walk to hear Buxtehude play the organ, we invite you to join us on a gentle stroll between two of East Northamptonshire’s beautiful and historic villages. In each place we will enjoy music for cello and organ including J S Bach’s Cello Suite No 1, the “Ricercar a 6” from The Musical Offering plus newly created arrangements for cello and organ together, including the Allegro from Brandenburg Concerto No 3. Supper tickets include a delicious two-course buffet (food only) in The Red Lion, Warmington.

As a prelude to the evening concert in Fotheringhay, Dr Magnus Williamson, with members of the vocal ensemble, Stile Antico, will introduce and demonstrate the music of the Elizabethan ‘Sadler’ Partbooks and explain their local significance. These important manuscripts, copied by John Sadler who was the schoolmaster of Fotheringhay and Oundle from the 1540s to the 1570s, contain iconic masterpieces such as Thomas Tallis’s sublime settings of the Lamentations. Sponsored by the Arts and Humanities Research Council as part of the Tudor Partbooks research project, this event will demonstrate how choirbooks, partbooks and other Renaissance music manuscripts were used in practice.

We are delighted to welcome back the vocal ensemble, Stile Antico in a programme of music which has great local significance. John Sadler was schoolmaster in Fotheringhay and Oundle from the 1540s to the 1570s and during that time copied large quantities of contemporary choral music. His principal set of partbooks, now in the Bodleian Library, has deteriorated over time to the point of illegibility, but thanks to the wonders of digital technology it is being restored for modern performance. Alongside polyphony by Thomas Tallis and William Byrd, this concert features organ improvisations and compositions from John Sadler’s lifetime.


6.30pm Dr Magnus Williamson will give a pre-concert talk in the church about John Sadler, his partbooks and their connections with the lost collegiate church of Fotheringhay.

In a programme with a truly international flavour, Anna Ovsyanikova and Chris Hotson perform French music influenced by the blues (Ravel’s 2nd Violin Sonata), Polish composer Henryk Wienawski’s brilliant showpiece Scherzo-Tarantelle, Russian Alexander Glazunov’s Three pieces from ‘Raymonda’ as well as music by Belgian Mathieu Crickboom and the ever popular Argentinian Astor Piazzolla.


A late-night feast of cutting edge contemporary music. The centrepiece of the programme is Nico Muhly’s O Antiphon Preludes written for James McVinnie in 2010 (with the students of the 2015 Oundle for Organists Summer School singing the plainsong verses) along with Philip Glass’s Music in Similar Motion, and Mad Rush.

In this all Vivaldi programme, award-winning La Serenissima perform The Four Seasons - the most popular piece of classical music of all time - in a brand new edition made by violinist Adrian Chandler.

A true renaissance man, Vivaldi was at the forefront of baroque innovation, keen to experiment with new textures and sound worlds. To reflect this, the programme also includes works for bassoon and, for the first time since the eighteenth century performances of two of Vivaldi’s concertos for ‘prepared violin’ (the violino in tromba marina). Adrian Chandler, luthier David Rattray and Vivaldi expert Michael Talbot have teamed up to recreate this curious and loud instrument from evidence surviving in the archives of the Ospedale della Pietà, the famous foundling institution with which Vivaldi was associated for much of his career.

International prize-winning, Canadian-based organist Neil Cockburn performs a mid-morning recital designed to uplift and inspire in the glorious setting of Fotheringhay’s beautiful church. His programme includes J S Bach’s thrillingly virtuosic Praeludium in C, BWV 566 as well as works by Bach’s French contemporary, André Raison, and the modern Quebec composer, Raymond Daveluy.
