by Brian Turner Nissan started out 2013 with well deserved recognition

for their efforts in alternative vehicle power-trains. The Canadian government awarded the all-electric Nissan LEAF the ecoENERGY award for the most fuel efficient mid-sized vehicle. The LEAF also currently holds the title of the world’s best-selling electric vehicle (in February it surpassed the 50,000 units-sold mark). The LEAF is just one example of Nissan’s commitment to improved sustainability and to providing consumers with affordable ways to reduce their fuel bills and carbon footprints.

Looking forward, Nissan will certainly not rest on their laurels as they continue to deliver exactly what drivers are looking for in every segment of the market. Christian Meunier, president of Nissan Canada put it best recently when he remarked, “Nissan is in the midst of its strongest product offensive to date, with five new models in 15 months… including Sentra, Pathfinder, Altima, and now Versa Note. With segment-exclusive technology, outstanding fuel economy, smart packaging and class-leading cargo space, Versa Note is expected to remain one of the strongest sub-compacts in the segment as it arrives at Nissan dealerships this spring.” His statements reveal an interesting difference in philosophies that separates Nissan from the competition. Nissan puts their most advanced technologies in terms of fuel efficiency, passenger safety, and performance in their main-stream and entry level models while other carmakers trickle their top engineering efforts down over time from their premium priced units.

The continuously variable transmission (CVT) is probably the best recent example of this consumer-oriented thinking from Nissan. While other automakers offer CVT’s (and

their improved performance and gas mileage) as added-cost options, Nissan includes them as standard equipment in most products.

In the Nissan family of products there is something for everyone. From competitively priced compacts like the Versa and Cube, to family Sentra and Altima sedans, to crossovers JUKE, Rogue and Murano, no personal taste or individual transportation need is left out. While other manufacturers are putting their minivans out to pasture, Nissan recognized that this platform continues to serve a substantial segment of the mobile population and their investment in moving their Quest forward is paying off in increased customer loyalty.

In the pick-up truck segment Nissan has also demonstrated their aversion to their competition’s beaten path by lowering the price on their popular Frontier this year by an average of over $4,000 across all trim levels. This was done without sacrifice to quality or innovation. Judy Wheeler, director of marketing notes that. “The Frontier offers the capability, styling, off-road performance credentials, innovative versatility and interior comfort of a full-size truck. It’s designed and built for those who are active, love the outdoors, and yet it has the technology to serve as a mobile office.” The larger Titan truck continues to blaze its own path into 2013 with an industry leading 7-foot bed on the crew-cab configuration allowing buyers to have the best of both passenger and cargo worlds instead of compromising.

Without doubt the SUV segment is where Nissan is redefining personal and family transportation delivery. XTrail, Xterra, Pathfinder, and Armanda have all found success in their abilities to deliver affordable urban commuter transport as well as family adventure. For those that think that SUV’s can’t provide fuel efficiency Tim Franklin, Senior Manager,

Product Planning, Nissan Canada, responds, “Nissan has answered with its unique approach to affordable Hybrid technology. Nissan has adapted its advanced Intelligent Dual Clutch System to create a new four-wheel drive hybrid system debuting in Canada in late summer 2013 in the fourth-generation Nissan Pathfinder SUV. The new system used in the 2014 Pathfinder Hybrid serves as the natural evolution from conventional internal combustion power-trains to the wider adaption of hybrid systems.”

To enter all you have to do is find the Far Horizons logo somewhere in the paper (not on this page) and mail or drop off to The EMC Contest at 57 Auriga Drive, Unit 103, Ottawa, ON, K2E 8B2. No purchase is necessary.

Entrants must be 19 years of age or older.One ballot per household that can be entered every week. The

contest runs for 16 weeks total, starting on Jan. 17th, 2013 until May 8th, 2013 in selected EMC Newspapers. The last edition that you can fill out a ballot is on May 2nd, 2013.

Ballots must reach EMC office no later than 5pm May 9th at 5pm. Entrants are able to fill out one ballot every week per household. At

Airfare, accommodations and taxes are included. Winner must confirm trip dates with Far Horizons. Dates are subject to availability. The trip must be used by Dec 2013. Winners must have valid passport/travel documents.
