2012LOVE HOPE OPTIMISM IN THIS ISSUE

Oshawas New Democrats areexcited about the future of our party, in a cityfull of bright citizens and progressive ideas.

Together we can build a political process thatwill make us stronger. We hope our ridingassociation will continue to grow andbecome more diverse. I encourage you tobecome a member today, and join us inworking for change that puts people first.

We have been hard at workhere in Oshawa. Its fantasticto see so many active peoplein our community advocatingfor positive change.

We welcomed NDP MPP and Labour CriticTaras Natyshak to Oshawa for a successfulNDP Social and BBQ. Taras had a great timelistening to the issues that matter most toworking people in Oshawa. We have beendistributing postage-paid surveys to Oshawaconstituents because Andrea Horwath andthe NDP Caucus want to know what issuesare most important to us. Most recently, weve been collecting signatures for apetition Olivia Chow will be presenting to theHouse opposing an ethanol plant at ourharbour.

We must continue to fight against attacks by the Conservatives andLiberals against free collective bargaining

rights, cuts to Old Age Security, and theerosion of critical public services. We mustcontinue to act swiftly, determined andcommitted to defending and improving thequality of life for Ontarians and Canadians.Lets keep working to elect an NDPgovernment so we can begin to repair thedamage that has been done.

The ranks of New Democrats are swelling, thanks to the strong leadership of AndreaHorwath and Tom Mulcair, and of course,Jacks legacy.

Together we can unite todefeat the right in Oshawa, and across the city andprovince. Great things canhappen when progressivesunite. Come join the OshawaNDP team!

Construction is slated to go ahead on anethanol plant at Oshawas harbour. OliviaChow was quick to expose this blatantConservative cronyism; despite widespreadopposition from local residents, the Harpergovernment is forcing this on our waterfront.

Concerned citizens of allpolitical stripes point out thatthis location poses a seriousthreat to the bordering SecondMarsh, an environmentallyprotected wetland.

An ethanol refinery at the harbour would alsodeeply industrialize the waterfront, greatlyaffecting resident use. The lakeshore is amuch-needed refuge in a city with so manydeep industrial scars.

City and Regional Council areofficially opposed to anethanol plant on ourwaterfront.

Supporters of the project claim that this willbe a much-needed job boost to a communitywracked by job loss. If the way this has beenimposed on us to date is any indicator, thenone might be forgiven for wondering if these50 full-time jobs will serve as rewards forlong-serving Conservative insiders andfriends.

Good jobs dont have a negative effect on ourenvironment and city. Good jobs dont inhibitall residents right and ability to enjoy theirwaterfront. Perhaps our Conservative MP hasbeen away in Ottawa too long, and hasforgotten how therapeutic it can be toescape to Oshawas lakeshore and smell thefresh clean air rolling in from the lake.

Who wants a smelly and noisyethanol plant along ourwaterfront?

Residents of Oshawa havecontinuously said no to anethanol plant at the harbour.

Yet Conservatives are using the federally-controlled Port Authority to grant those whodo not live in Oshawa all decision-makingpower over how our harbor will be used even if this is against the wishes of the city. Isthis how democracy should work? The NDPbelieves people in Oshawa deserve better. We deserve a voice.

Olivia Chow will be presentinga petition to the House, calling on the Canadiangovernment to divest the PortAuthority to the City of Oshawa, to halt constructionof an ethanol facility, to holdpublic hearings, and tocomplete an environmentalassessment at the site andsurrounding areas.

Lets remind our Conservative MPs that theyshould be representing their constituents, not their special interests.

Dalton McGuintys reign as the self -dubbedEducation Premier has been a nightmare

for Ontarios post -secondary students. Since2006, tuition fees for Ontarios domesticstudents have increased by 35% andintern ational students fees continue to beleft unregulated, leaving those studentspaying three to four times more for the sameeducation as domestic students.

The consistent upward climbof tuition fees has left Ontariowith the lowest per-studentfunding and the highestaverage tuition in Canada.

The Premier promised a 30% reduction intuition during the last provincial election andmany of us thought, This is too good to betrue. Well friends, it turns out it was.

Instead of reducing tuition for every Ontariostudent, Minister Murray and Premier

McGuinty doled out the Ontario TuitionGrant (OTG). Not only did they cancel theTextbook Grant, the Queen Elizabeth Grant, and the Work Study Program to pay for theOTG, the students who use those assistanceprograms the most mature and Aboriginalstudents were not eligible to receive theOTG.

Adding insult to injury, the OTG only givesstudents 30% off the provincial average; thismeans UOIT students, who pay some of thehighest tuition fees in the country, wellabove the provincial average, do not actually

receive a full 30% back. Also, the OTG doesnothing to address student debt or risingtuition fees in fact, tuition was increased by5% just as students were receiving their OTGcheques in the mail. Its time for aplan that puts students first.

There was a time decades ago when small cconservatism was considered the politics of the practical rather than the theoretical. Those who applied progressive policy tofurther the goal of a greater society wouldbe dismissed as well-meaning yet naivedreamers who didnt understand the cold hard facts. Clouded by their ideology andconvinced of their moral righteousness, surely they could not see how in the long runonly the tried and true could be trusted tosolve problems as they arose.

Then the trend reversed; conservatives nowtout their theories as solutions for everyproblem regardless of any historical or

statistical evidence to the contrary. Theyignore the fact that over the last century therise of living standards in the western worldhas been achieved by policies that would beconsidered radical in past centuries, for oncenot only did the rich got richer, so did thelower classes. They wouldchip away at institutions thathave served the majoritywell, based only on principalsand cynicism withoutconsideration of the greatergood for which democracyshould address. It wouldseem over the last twenty orthirty years they ignore the

realities that personal betterment is moreeasily achieved in countries that apply moreprogressive policies and that reducinginequality takes care of most social illswithout punitive laws or direct intervention.

So who are the dreamers now whocan rationalize selfishness and brandit as principal, and who are thepragmatists who will apply thestrategies that will further the goal of a better world for all?
