Students at this year’s Marching Band Extravaganza prepare to perform. Student Secretary Anibella Gonzalez is working to help organize this year’s officers and their director.

Repertoire Performances.

OCSA band members receive their musical training through preparing pieces

of what is known as repertoire. In preparing these American pieces of repertoire the students study the musical concepts of balance, blend, style, articulation as well as the pieces’ historical

significance. Performance practice and concert etiquette are also benefits of being in a public performance and tonight the students will display their grasp of these essential musical concepts in their

performance.

Developing Band’s First Repertoire performance.

Up first this evening will be our

student conductor, Mr. Jacob Virkler. Jacob is a senior at OCSA and has been a woodwind major since 6th grade playing flute in the Wind Ensemble and Tenor Sax in the High School Jazz Band. Jacob

works with the developing band students each day and is taking the podium for the first time this evening.

The piece of repertoire they have chosen for this evening is from

Beethoven’s 9th symphony. This setting for concert band, based on the symphony’s central theme Ode to Joy, offers one of the

world’s most beloved melodies in intrepid fanfare fashion. Fanfare on Ode To Joy is

arranged for us this evening by William Owens. This is a brand new arrangement published in 2010 by the FJH music company.

One of the functions of a concert band

is to perform marches. Tonight is no exception as the Developing Band performs March Ceremonial by master American Composer Mr. Robert Sheldon. This concert March is in the advanced key

of Eb Major and will feature the flutes in the poignantly legato middle section before the composition takes us back to the original fanfare melody in the trumpets.

Two Middle School Jazz Bands!Believe it or not there is more than

enough interest and talent to have two

Jazz Bands for the first time since the opening of OCSA. This evening you will be treated to a number from each

of the groups. Our “A-Band” will be performing Ain’t Misbehavin by Fats

Waller, arranged by Ralph Ford. Our “Band 1” will be performing

Sugar Sweet by Mr. Bob Lowden. Notice the amazing amount of colors present when the trumpet section uses

their mutes. Their second selection is entitled Tropical Update by Bret

Zvacek. This unique Samba was written by fellow University of Iowa graduate Mr. Bret Zvacek and features

his unique style of trombone writing as well as his signature “Breakdown”

section in the middle. Be sure and listen to each section of the band as they balance out “Their” melody

against the melodies of the other sections on the polyphonic breakdown

section toward the middle. Exciting!

2010 - 2011 Concert Band Repertoire PerformanceConcert Band Repertoire Performance. Winter 2010

This evening’s

performance by the OCSA Concert Band begins with a concert march by Mike

Leckrone entitled Eagle Creek. This march is filled

with interesting half phrases and unpredictable melodies

that go to unpredictable chord progressions. A delight to listen to and to

perform, Eagle Creek concert March is our

standard repertoire March for this evening.

Next up is a piece by ASCAP composer Mr.

Robert W. Smith entitled All Is Calm. Based on the

melody from silent night, this setting provides an amazing educational tool for

the teaching of orchestration. Here’s what

you’ll be hearing. The students were

charged with orchestrating

the solo instruments to come up with appropriate

musical colors that build throughout the piece. See if you agree with their

choices and get a glimpse into their artistic thought

processes. Who knows, the next

Beethoven might be right

here at OCSA!

The next piece

on our concert is from the 20th

Century school of composing

and will feature

aleatoric elements throughout the

piece. Old Churches is a

composition by ASCAP’s

Mr. Michael Colgrass. This is a programatic work meant

to evoke the slightly mysterious notion of a monastery scene filled with

the prayers and chanting of monks in an Old Church.

See if you can identify the mumbling of church members and the Gregorian

Chant melodies used throughout the piece. Mr.

Colgrass has won the Guggenheim fellowship twice, an Emmy for the PBS

documentary Soundings: The Music of Michael

Colgrass and the Pulitzer Prize for Music. It is a pleasure to teach this piece

and to watch the young musicians mature into this

work. (Colgrass is pictured at left.)

Finally tonight’s performance will conclude

with a piece by Mr. Quincy C. Hilliard entitled Africata.

It will be guest conducted by local conductor and violinist Mrs. Rechel

Nganga. As part of the Parkway/

OCSA partnership the students would like to send Holiday wishes to our sister

school, Kawelu primary, in Kenya.

Be sure and check out the words of the middle section, Africa, Kawelu,

Swahili, Nairobi, and Makindu. Search Makindu,

Eastern, Kenya on google maps for more information or visit the following
