10 :: PUBLISHER’S NOTE

> It seems like most of the country can’t catch a break with the weather these days especially with the northeast getting pummeled with record snowfalls and flooding rains. It’s almost unimaginable that within the past few months we have experienced ‘Sandy’ almost demolishing eastern seaboard communities thrusting thousands of our fellow citizens into ‘tent-city’ living environments. Next, there is ‘Nemo’ dumping over two feet of snow accompanied with high winds, crippling huge swaths of New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, etc. with blizzard conditions putting thousands more without power for who-knows-how-long.

Despite experiencing mostly insignificant daily problems, those of us just a short distance south of these areas quickly transition into sun and warmth. Although seemingly oblivious to the hardships encountered by our northern neighbors, we truly feel their pain as many of us have friends, relatives and acquaintances struggling through some much tougher times. So, we are thankful that we awaken most mornings looking forward to a new day, browsing thru the latest ‘Style’ magazine content and welcoming spring with open arms. Being able to enjoy the best weather period of the year is something we get to cherish and love every minute of…. perhaps a bit unfair in comparative terms but welcomed nonetheless.

Closer to home, our area continues to experience growth. Shops are doing incredibly great in selling their products and services, the real estate market has returned with strength and touts the lowest inventory in a very long time. The stock market continues to confound by setting new highs since 2007 and threatens to go even higher, fueled by generally higher business income reporting and a more relaxed atmosphere in which people are becoming less afraid to spend again. Our position continues to be supportive of facing a brighter future as we shun the bad news reporting coming from the multitude of so-called ‘experts’.... an entitlement which is reserved for only a few.

In this issue, be sure to see the latest beach and pool wear photo shoot to catch the latest in fashion under the sun. Then check out our report on the UP market in “Hot Real Estate Trends for 2013!” And get to know some great real estate professionals in ‘Beauty & Brains in Real Estate.’ These articles and the additional great editorials will make you feel good to be here...enjoy!

> It’s that time of the year again. We must

say bye-bye to our winter coats and say hel-

lo to bathing suits and short shorts. As soon

as spring rolls around there’s no more hiding

behind our winter wardrobe. Lets face it; we

all slack on our diets and workouts during

the winter because EVERYONE looks better

in winter clothing. Well, most of us anyway.

There are the lucky few who look perfect

in a bathing suit no matter what the season,

how old, or how many children they’ve had.

More specifically, I am speaking of some of

our beloved Hollywood celebs that look

good 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. How-

ever, for all the hot celeb bods out there,

there are just as many not so hot ones. Let’s

take a look at who has kept up with their

fantastic physique year-round and whom we

would actually prefer to keep their clothes

on while laying poolside.

We’ll begin on a positive note- with the celebs

we definitely want to see strip down this spring.

Jennifer Aniston is the definition of a

classic beauty with a body that every woman

desires to obtain. Aside from an obviously

good gene pool, Jennifer keeps up her per-

fect physique with much hard work. Thanks

to her long time wellness trainer and yoga in-

structor, Mandy Ingber, Jennifer is a 43-year-

old woman who could pass as a twenty-five

year-old any day. Her trick is to indulge in

a combination of yoga, spinning and toning

exercises. Not to forget the importance she

emphasizes on developing a strong connec-

tion between her mind and body. She strives

to have balance in all aspects in her life and

keep a healthy outlook when it comes to

her busy career and personal life.

Jada Pinkett Smith is one, drop dead

gorgeous mama of three. It is truly amazing

that between her career and family she can

find the time to keep herself looking per-

fect. It seems we have her mom to thank

for that. Ever since Jada was a child she has

been physically active. Her mom always had

her enrolled in some type of activity like

gymnastics, dance or horseback riding. Jada

has inherited that parenting tool from her

mother and has past it on to her own kids,

meaning sitting at home on weekends is nev-

er an option for the Pinkett-Smith house-

hold. Aside from working-out together, the

family loves to go surfing or snowboarding

as a means to exercise and have fun.

Audrina Patridge knows that living in

Southern California means it is always bikini

season and lucky for her, her body is always

bikini ready. This 27-year-old actress and

CELEBRITY SOUP :: 15

The Pretty & The

The Hills alumni is a total knockout with

the legs and abs to prove it. Aside from daily

workouts and a strict diet plan, Audrina

finds time throughout the day to squeeze in

some extra workouts. When she is sitting in

front of the TV she likes to lift 5-10 pound

weights to define her arms or do squats to

work out her legs. What is most bizarre is

her secret to working out her calves and

butt at home; she wears heels while vacu-

uming!

Now let’s check out some celebrities who

should take some workout advice from the

previously mentioned.

Coco Marie, wife of Ice-T, is one outra-

geous woman with a big heart (and a few

other “big” things). Voluptuous is beautiful.

Women are supposed to have curves and

love them, but there is such a thing as “too

much.” We get it, Coco, you want to flaunt

your body, but please, try to keep it PG.

When your bikini fits like a piece of floss, it

means you have outgrown it and it is time

to find a new one.

Quentin Tarantino, the genius behind

Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained,

could definitely use a bit of a workout regi-

men this spring. It looks like he has enjoyed

one too many fruitcakes over the holidays.

That’s okay, Quentin, you can stay behind

the cameras where you work best, just as

long as you keep casting those hunky ac-

tors as your lead roles. (Cough, Cough, Brad

Pitt!)

Ke$ha’s grunge look and party-girl per-

sona keep her topping the headlines. This

month, it is her bathing suit body that is up

for discussion. Her crazy, cool, “I don’t care”

image is starting to affect her physique.

Her boxy figure and lack of curves could

be modified by some squats or crunches.

Plus, who was with her when she decided

that was an appropriate bathing suit for her

body type?! Be sure to check with a friend

next time before trying it out in public.<

> In true Orlando Style, the month of

February held an event for just about ev-

eryone, from fabulous cocktail parties to

car festivals – We revved up our engines

and kicked off the list of events with the

9th annual Cars for The Cure on February

9th at the always-beautiful Colonial Town

Park in Lake Mary. The charitable event was

hosted by the American Lung Association

of Florida and let’s just say – it was unlike

any other. Car lovers from all over central

Florida came to admire the exotic wheels

that were up for display from Lamborghini,

Bugatti Veyron, Porsche and Ashton Martin

to name a few. Over 150 cars lined the

streets of Colonial Town Park. The event,

which catered to automotive enthusiasts, is

the largest charitable car show in the South-

east United States and it was definitely one

for the books. Proceeds from the day long,

family festival benefited the American Lung

Association of Central Florida. The show-

case didn’t end there, for all registered par-

ticipants, there was a Sunday Drive held, a

tradition at the Cars for the Cure event.

The excitement continued on with the four

day Welcome to Spring trunk show by Don-

caster. The signature collection was up for

display offering a view at the extraordinary

apparel for women from dawn until dusk

from February 9th to February 12th. At-

tendees were treated to refreshments while

browsing through the latest trends and up-

scale fashions from the inspired luxury and

lifestyle brand that is noted for their sophis-

ticated styling and use of elegant fabrics. To

top it all off we enjoyed prizes, giveaways,

and complementary hors’ devours and

drinks. The show also encouraged event go-

ers to bring their gently used professional

apparel for donation to the Dress for Suc-

cess Greater Orlando.

The fashion trend continued on with the

always trendy ‘little black dress party,’ pre-

sented by yours truly, Orlando Style, and

One80 Grey Goose Lounge. The event was

hosted by our town’s number one radio

personality Johnny Magic and Rae from XL

106.7 on February 22nd. The ladies in the

house dressed to the nines in their classic

little black dresses while they enjoyed drinks

and prizes from local boutiques. We partied

the night away with Grey Goose cocktails

until 2am. You can never go wrong with a

sexy little black dress!

In one of the most dazzling collections ever

assembled, the Jewels of the Titanic display

on International Drive showcases an exhibi-

tion featuring fifteen of the most prestigious

artifacts recovered from the wreck site of

the Titanic. The exhibition will be up until

March 2nd. Some of the artifacts being dis-

played are diamonds, sapphires, pearls and

gold jewelry that once belonged to some of

the ship’s wealthiest passengers in the early

1900s. Debuting in Atlanta, this is the first

time the artifacts are displayed as a collec-

tion where visitors can also experience and

learn about the phenomenal underwater

discovery, mysterious lineage and the vast

influence these artifacts have in today’s pop

culture. Check out some truly blinding and

unforgettable jewels at this amazing and not

to mention historical exhibit that is only in

town for just 2 more days! <

20 :: REAL ESTATE

> A New Year comes with new resolu-tions, new ideas and new opportunities. A once bleak real estate market is stabilizing and developing an upturn. New opportuni-ties in the Central Florida real estate market are emerging as we move into the hopeful New Year. Development and construction continue in the commercial and residen-tial sectors including new high-rises, rental apartments and new retail spaces. Locally, we see this driving around - or getting lost - Downtown Orlando, specifically near Or-ange Avenue and East Colonial Drive, home of the new Steel house apartment homes. Lake Nona continues to cultivate new life to once barren land as the Nemours Children’s Hospital and the Veterans Administration hospital show to be a main attraction.

The Orlando Regional Realtor Association reports Orlando’s median home price fin-ished out the year 22.04 percent higher than where it started, thanks to significant median price improvements every single month. In fact, Orlando’s overall median price has now posted positive year- to- year gains for 18 consecutive months, and has climbed 38.88 percent since January 2011. Our thriving Central Florida real estate mar-ket is unveiling new trends as sales continue to climb and inventory continues to dimin-

ish. A buyer in 2010 had over 14, 000 homes to consider. A buyer in December 2012 had only about 7,300 homes available. My cal-culator isn’t needed to grasp this is about half the inventory, fifty percent less of the options available than just 2 years prior. The steady decline in listing inventory and his-torically low interest rates has become the top driving forces of the hottest real estate trends. The term seller’s market is one we haven’t heard since before the real estate bubble. As a Realtor prospering in 2005 to a struggling Realtor learning how to adapt and survive in today’s market, I’ve seen the strong buyers market turn into a sellers market. Homes that are in a good location, good condition and are priced aggressively drive buyers. A buyer’s agent working in today’s market has gone from asking and getting everything for the buyers, to making their buyer’s offer as appealing as possible to the seller. The de-clining inventory and increase of buyers has turned a once gloomy buyers market into a hot sellers market.

Today’s buyers continue to be local home-grown domestic buyers consisting of first-time home buyers and investors looking to build their rental portfolio, but foreign investors are still prominent. Canadian and Chinese buyers account for the largest per-centages of foreign investors. Some of these buyers are looking for their family holiday home, vacationing with Mickey Mouse; other foreign buyers are seizing the opportunity to own the American Dream at a discount. As buyers remain optimistic about our Cen-tral Florida real estate market we will con-tinue to see positive signs of recovery. Statis-tics and history help us to understand real estate markets are cyclical and long-term investments. The market will heal itself over time, and it’s happening.<

> As of January 1, 2013 changes by the Florida legislature may have a great impact on the way your car accident claim is han-dled. If you are injured in an auto accident, you now have a mere two weeks to seek medical treatment or risk the potential loss of the coverage you have been paying for. In Florida, drivers are required to have Personal Injury Protection insurance (PIP) and liability protection to cover property damage. The PIP coverage will cover up to $10,000 of medical treatment if you are in-jured in an auto accident. The Florida Legis-lature, with enough prodding by auto insur-ance companies, has added new hurdles for Florida Drivers to jump over in order to receive PIP benefits.

One of the biggest changes to the law has to do with the timing of seeking medical at-tention; you must seek your initial medical treatment within 14 days of the accident under the new law. The problem is many people involved car accidents postpone care initially and only seek medical help down the road when aches and pains per-sist or arise. It is not at all uncommon for someone “self treat” with over-the-counter medications for two or three weeks before seeking appropriate medical attention. Tim-ing is not only hurdle the injured are faced with under the new law; a specific type of medical provider must now perform the initial treatment in order to potentially receive full PIP benefits. Medical providers that fit the bill include Medical Doctors, Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine, Dentists, Physician’s Assistants or Registered Nurse Practitioners.

Once you have cleared both hurdles of timing and selecting the appropriate medi-cal provider, you are faced with the “Emer-gency Medical Condition” question. Your medical provider must declare that you have an “Emergency Medical Condition” in order to receive your full PIP benefits. An Emergency Medical Condition is defined as a medical condition that would reasonably be expected to result in serious jeopardy to patient health, serious impairment to a body

function, or serious dysfunction of any bodi-ly organ or part. If your medical provider does not feel that you have an Emergency Medical Condition, as defined by the new law, you will lose $7,500 of your PIP cover-age. What does that mean to you? Unfortu-nately, you will only have $2,500 of PIP ben-efits available for medical treatment related to the accident. You may think $2,500 will more than cover your medical bills if you do not have a serious condition, but more than half of your PIP benefits can easily be ex-hausted in one trip to the emergency room after an accident. In order to navigate your way through the new law, you may want to consult with a personal injury attorney.

You may wonder how the Florida Legisla-ture has managed to take away the benefits that you pay for. The new law was promoted as a way for Florida drivers to save money on auto insurance. The law calls for a 25% reduction in billing for PIP benefits in 2014; however, the insurance companies have a right to petition for exclusion from the re-duction. The recent changes to Florida PIP law also required a 10% reduction in Octo-ber 2012, but of the 148 insurance company PIP-rate filings that have been approved by the State’s Office of Insurance Regulation, only 25% of these filings show the required reduction. When it comes to winners and losers, the auto insurance companies win big and Florida drivers lose again.

If you are injured in an auto accident, not only you should seek immediate medical at-tention, but you must seek this service from the appropriate type of medical provider. Your PIP benefits are crucial in your abil-ity to receive and potentially afford proper medical attention. These benefits may be the only thing standing between you and a serious permanent injury. In order to assure that you are taking the appropriate steps to follow the new law, you may want to con-sult with a qualified personal injury attorney who takes the time and has the experience to educate you on the changes to Florida PIP law and how it may affect your potential accident claim. Be careful and drive safely!<

24 :: THE ARTS

STYLETOME.COM

> Miami has it all. The sizzling nightlife, the gorgeous beaches, a melting pot of cul-tures, inspiring cuisine, and a one-of-a-kind art scene. These elements make Miami one of the ultimate tourist destinations in the world. And it sure was the place to be De-cember 6-9 when art lovers and creative geniuses traveled from all corners of the world to attend the 11th edition of Art Basel Miami Beach. More than 250 galler-ies were selected to be a part of the most prestigious art show in the United States and a part of the Art Basel series, which originated in 1970 and still occurs each year in Basel, Switzerland.

The four-day event took place at the Miami Beach Convention Center and featured work stemming from the Modern period of the early 20th century to the current contemporary work of today. The riveting pieces that decorated the walls came from 31 countries across five continents.

The event extended beyond the walls of the convention center and into every nook and cranny of the city. The presence of Art Basel Miami Beach over the past decade has re-vitalized Miami art culture and given a new spark to the city along with new buildings for the Miami Art Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami. Art and fashion have also become the major ele-ments of neighborhoods like Wynwood and the Design District, which are now sprin-kled generously with galleries and cutting-edge graffiti art murals on the side of build-ings and fixtures.

An electric charge was in the air on opening day and hundreds of art fans lined up out-side the convention center minutes before the doors opened. Over the five days, more than 50,000 visitors glided across the halls and observed, evaluated, and purchased the world’s most impressive pieces of art. The volume of visitors is a powerful represen-tation of how the commonality of art can attract people from different backgrounds, cultures, ethnicities, and location. Art Ba-sel is the premier stage to bring these people together.

Plus, this is one serious art show.

2000 artists from the 20th and 21st cen-tury were represented and everything from classic, to elegant, to mind-blowing creative, to shocking was featured in the displays of art on the walls, in sculptures, through performance art, and on film and video art. One striking piece on display was a larger-than-life sculpture constructed of LEGO blocks created by Los Carpinteros and titled “Kosmaj Toy.”

The main sector of Art Basel Miami Beach, known as the Art Galleries, featured 201 exhibitors, with returning galleries like the Konrad Fischer Galerie, Bernard Jacobson Gallery and Esther Schipper. Radical new-comers joined as well including Hammer Galleries, Galerie Mehdi Chouakri and Tornabuoni Art. It was here that Basel followers saw vulnerable, shocking, and powerful pieces.

Art Nova was a sect of the event offering a platform for newer galleries. These galler-ies must be less than three years old and created by only two or three artists. Some works with high acclaim were from Som-mer Contemporary Art featuring the artists Yael Bartana, Tal R. and Tom Burr. And the group Vitamin Creative Space, which was created by Hao Liang, Yangjiang Group and Zheng Guogu.

Only 16 galleries were displayed in Art Posi-tions, a sector that is for individual emerging artists. 12 of the 16 were not seen as part

of last year’s show and thus provided a fresh look for art collectors, critics, and museum directors. A fan favorite was Paulo Naza-reth’s “Banana Market/Art Market” which featured an old Volkswagen filled with thou-sands of bananas.

Art Public saw sculptures, interactive per-formances and site-specific instillations within an open and public format while Art Video featured film and video works by in-ternational artists and was projected onto outside wall of the New World Center in Downtown Miami.

Events relating to Art Basel swarmed the city. The JW Marriott Hotel presented a “Mi-ami Says ART” retrospective display. Back in 1976, Martin Kreloff had artists shout “art” into a camera and captured the moment on print. 35 years later, the exhibition featured portraits and multimedia documentary from the original “cast” and brought some of these now world-renowned art leaders back together for a reunion.

26 :: THE ARTS

And art wasn’t just represented in the tra-ditional forms of paint, photography, and structure. It was also expressed through movement at YogArt, a celebration of yoga, art, and music. YogArt, created by Dawn B Feinberg, was held at Wynwood Walls in the heart of Miami’s up-and-coming art scene, Wynwood…an area that is covered with expressive and gorgeous spray painted mas-terpieces that splatter the walls of every building, fence, and structure in the area. Four yoga practices were offered through-out the weekend taught by internationally acclaimed yoga teachers and featured the sounds of DJ Drez & the Mayapuris.

“It was art in motion – every person was a part of a living, breathing, moving creation” Feinburg said.

And, of course, in typical Miami fashion, the party scene was in full force throughout the weekend and saw the likes of Demi Moore, Martha Stewart, and Calvin Klein amongst others enjoying themselves at Miami’s most decorated hotels and clubs.

As Art Basel Miami Beach came to a close, and artwork was tucked away, the buzz re-mained in the air. Whether it was excite-ment surrounding practicing yoga under

the stars, the uniqueness of watching film on the side of a building, or admiring the works of the most brilliant artists in the world, past and present, Art Basel Miami Beach was quite the experience. It’s clear why it continues to remain one of the most renowned art shows in the world. <

Feinburg said.”

> The BMW M6 Gran Coupe joins the existing Coupe and Convertible models in the line-up. The new mem-

ber of the M6 family brings together customary M performance characteristics with extra helpings of luxury

and aesthetic appeal. The high-revving V8 enginewith M TwinPower Turbo technology and 412 kW/560 hp

propels the BMW M6 Gran Coupe from 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.2 seconds. And the elegantly sporty

lines of the four-door Coupe are complemented by bespoke features, such as the carbon fibre-reinforced

plastic (CFRP) roof. The greater interior space of the BMW M6 Gran Coupe allows two rear passengers to

enjoy generous levels of on-board comfort, and there is also a third rear seat for use on shorter journeys.

Design: the beauty of majestic power delivery.

Hallmark M design features influenced di-rectly by technical considerations – such as cooling air requirements, chassis geometry, weight balance and aerodynamics – open a clear window into the performance capabil-ity of the BMW M6 Gran Coupe. The front of the car is dominated by its large air in-takes, standard Adaptive LED Headlights and an M kidney grille designed especially for this model. From the side, the first four-door Coupe in the BMW M GmbH ranks is clearly distinguishable from the BMW M6 Coupe thanks to its rear doors and 113-millimetre longer wheelbase. The low roofline flowing smoothly into the rear, the swage ltine – which takes in the door open-ers – and side windows extending well into the C-pillars accentuate the dynamically stretched silhouette.

Prominently flared wheel arches draw the eye to a track width specific to the BMW M6 Gran Coupe. The characteristic M gills, aerodynamically optimised exterior mir-rors, standard BMW Individual High-gloss Shadow Line package and exclusive 20-inch M light-alloy wheels in double-spoke design underline the car’s distinctive appearance, as does another M signature – twin exhaust tailpipes positioned on the outer edges of the rear apron. Also integrated into the rear apron, and charged with the task of optimis-ing airflow along the car’s underbody, is a diffuser made from CFRP.

This extremely lightweight, impressively strong high-tech material is used in the con-struction of the roof as well. Here, the visi-ble carbon structure provides an eye-catch-ing feature, as does a dynamic recess in the centre of the roof. This recess is referenced stylistically inside the car, the anthracite-co-loured Alcantara roof liner gaining a central section in leather.

V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, seven-speed

Emulating the harmonious blend of athletic prowess and elegance embodied by the exterior design, the distinctively M cockpit fuses sports car style with generous levels

of space and a luxurious ambience. The driver and front passenger can look forward to M sports seats with integral belt guides. And the BMW M6 Gran Coupe’s standard specification also includes Merino leather upholstery with extended features. The rear compartment offers two or three seats, the backrests of which can split and fold down in a ratio of 40 : 60 to increase boot capacity

from 460 to as much as 1,265 litres.

M Double Clutch Transmission with Drivelogic, Active M Differential

The powertrain technology under the skin of the BMW M6 Gran Coupe guarantees the performance characteristics for which M Automobiles are renowned. The V8 en-gine with M TwinPower Turbo technol-ogy produces 412 kW/560 hp. Its techni-cal wizardry includes a pair of twin-scroll turbochargers, a cross-bank exhaust mani-fold, High Precision Direct Petrol Injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and Double-Vanos continuously variable cam-shaft control. The 4,395 cc unit keeps peak torque of 680 Newton metres (502 lb-ft) on tap between 1,500 and 5,750 rpm, while maximum output is developed between 6,000 and 7,000 rpm. The engine revs to a maximum of 7,200 rpm. The BMW M6 Gran Coupe sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.2 seconds on the way to an electroni-cally governed top speed of 250 km/h/155 mph (305 km/h/189 mph if the optional M Driver’s Package is specified). Average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle stands at 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres (28.5 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions are 232 grams per kilometre.

Taking care of power transfer is a seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission with Drivelogic. The transmission’s electronic management system ensures the right gear is selected for optimum traction. It also of-fers the driver a Launch Control function for maximum acceleration, Low Speed As-sistance for extra comfort and the Auto Start-Stop function to enhance efficiency.

Under particularly dynamic acceleration out of corners, as well as in tricky road and weather conditions, the Active M Dif-ferential at the rear axle distributes the en-gine’s power between the individual wheels to maximum traction-enhancing effect. Its

electronically controlled multi-disc limited-slip differential works hand-in-hand with the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system and splits drive between the right and left rear wheels quickly and precisely according to the situation at hand.

Exclusive and individual: high-qualityrange of equipment.

The standard equipment fitted on the BMW M6 Gran Coupe includes 20-inch M light-alloy wheels, leather trim, heated driver and front passenger seats, automatically dim-ming rear-view and exterior mirrors, an alarm system and the BMW Professional radio with hi-fi loudspeakers. Available as an alternative to the standard 2-zone au-tomatic climate control is a 4-zone system with a control panel in the rear compart-ment. Among the other highlights of the op-tions list are M multifunction seats, heated rear seats, Comfort Access, a heated steer-ing wheel, the Soft Close Automatic func-tion for the doors, electrically operated sun blinds, the new generation of the Profes-sional navigation system and a Bang & Oluf-sen High End Surround Sound System.

The BMW M6 Gran Coupe also comes with a variety of BMW ConnectedDrive features, such as an M-specific BMW Head-Up Display, Park Distance Control, a rear-view camera, High Beam Assistant, Speed Limit Info, Lane Change Warning, Lane De-parture Warning, Surround View and BMW Night Vision with pedestrian recognition. Customers can also integrate their Apple iPhone or other smartphones into the car and make use of internet-based services while on board. <

44 :: BEST FRIENDS

> As we prepare our bodies for the

beach, don’t forget the sunscreen, visor, cool

drinks and (this is Florida) mosquito repel-

lent… and not just for you, but your pets as

well.

The unofficial state bird of Florida is the

mosquito. I once saw a swarm of mos-

quitoes carry away a teacup poodle. OK,

maybe not carry away, but they sure did try.

Mosquitoes pose threats to humans and

animals. For your dogs and cats, the risk is

heartworm disease. This deadly condition is

easily preventable with a variety of prescrip-

tions available from your Veterinarian. If the

swarms become too thick, you may also

contact Orange County Arthropod Control

at 407-352-4370, and they will spray your

neighborhood.

Next are fleas. Besides skin allergies, fleas

are responsible for a wide range of worms,

digestive disorders and diseases. Flea out-

breaks are difficult to completely destroy

and might cost you a pretty penny. Again,

prevent outbreaks by treating your pet with

prescription from your Veterinarian. You

and your house might also become infected

even if you don’t have a pet – they like to

hide in socks as you walk through grass.

With Orlando situated in the middle of a

gigantic swamp, you should be aware of the

creepys and crawlys that prowl in tropical

quagmires. Alligators, snakes, boars, spiders,

scorpions and rodents have ways of getting

into yards, pools, and sidewalks. Keep your

eyes open and your pet away from these po-

tentially deadly adversaries.

Beware of the hot spots. Cars can reach

temperatures of excess of 140 degrees in

only three minutes in summer. Plus, it is a

violation of County Code if you leave your

pet in an unattended vehicle. Walking your

dog on the hot black asphalt could cause

damage to the pads on your dog’s paws. If

walking or hiking, make sure that you have

plenty of water for you and your pet.

Beware of the wet spots. The Atlantic, the

Gulf, your pool – all pose a hazard if your

pet does not know how to swim. Most

dogs instinctively swim, but it is best to test

their skills in a safe, controlled atmosphere.

Some breeds, like beagles, are not strong

swimmers. Watch your pet if you go in the

ocean; rip currents and nurse sharks love lil’

doggies. Also beware of bogs and ditches;

these are breeding grounds of molds, fungi,

and microbes.

If you take a summer vacation, remember

that your pet is a member of your pack and

would love to go with you. AAA has a list-

ing of hotels that accept pets. Practice taking

your pet on car rides to prepare them for a

long trip. It is better to learn if your pet gets

carsick when you are only in the car for 10

minutes… instead of 10 days. If you decide

to leave your pet, you have several options.

Kennels are great, but test the kennel/pet

relationship by allowing your pet to stay just

one night a few weeks prior to your trip, so

they may adjust. Another option is leaving

your pet at home with a pet sitter. Friends,

relatives, and pet sitting professionals may

care for your pet within the familiarity of

their own home.<

46 :: DON’T MISS THE BEAT

> If there’s one thing I know about Josh Groban, it’s that his singing is the closest sound to angelic that I’ll ever hear while here on earth. As a long-time fan and two-time concert attendee of the acclaimed vo-calist, I was beyond ecstatic when I learned he was releasing his 6th studio album in February 2013. With more than 21 million albums sold in his career, Groban is one of the top selling male pop vocalists of the past two decades and rightfully so. If Michael Jackson is the King of Pop, then Josh Groban is easily the reigning King of ‘Popera.’ With each new record Groban seems to further master his art of combining the timeless beauty of classical music with the catching rhythms of modern pop. Groban’s last record, “Illuminations,” was released in 2010 and peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200. During Groban’s “Illumi-nations” tour, I had the opportunity to see him in concert and witness the power of his vocals live and in all their glory. In this day of overly-digitized and produced music, it’s so rare to hear an artist who sounds exactly the same live as they do on their albums and Josh Groban is that artist in the living flesh. When his raw and genuine vocal talent is married to the beautifully written lyrics he’s known for, it will leave you with chills. On February 5th, Groban released “All That Echoes,” his highly anticipated sixth stu-dio album. The producer behind “All That Echoes” is none other than Warner Bros. Records chairman and veteran producer Rob Cavallo. Cavallo is best known for his work with numerous big-named rock bands such as Green Day, Paramore, and the Goo Goo Dolls. He is clearly one who knows

the key to producing successful rock mu-sic and Groban’s collaborating with him has brought this album to a level entirely dif-ferent to anything we’ve seen Groban do before. “All That Echoes” was named one of Bill-board’s Best Bets for 2013 and features an edgier sound that is pushing Groban’s mu-sic to new genres and reaching the pleased ears of both seasoned Grobanites* and brand new Groban fans. Another excit-ing thing to note about “All That Echoes” is that it features more original songs and co-written credits to Groban. Groban says it was the frustration of hearing cheesily written songs, which drove him to do so, but his fans are certainly not complaining. More original songwriting by Groban only adds to the personal intimacy that listeners of “All That Echoes” get to experience with him. With all the above being said, don’t ask me if I wasn’t first in line to buy the album on its release. I couldn’t open that CD fast enough and now--after listening to it nu-merous times--I’d like to tell you 16 reasons why you should buy it too. Reason #1: Brave“All That Echoes” kicks off with a bang titled “Brave,” the first track and lead single off the record. Grand orchestral arrangements and a powerful display of vocals leave no question as to why the tune has been hap-pily stuck in the heads of Groban fans since its premier in December. Reason #2: False AlarmsHaunting and beautiful is the second track on “All That Echoes,” a dramatic ballad titled “False Alarms.” Groban (who says the song was originally written for his last album but “wasn’t the right situation”) has described

the song as being about, “being in a relationship where you real-ize that you’re doing all the jumping around and need to be a little more Zen about letting the right thing come to you.” Reason #3: Falling SlowlyThe third track and one of my many personal favorites is Gro-ban’s cover of “Falling Slowly,” written and originally performed by Glen Hansard. In this piece, Groban brings a passionate take to the song made famous by the beloved movie and Broadway stage musical “Once.” Reason #4: She Moved Through The FairIn track #4 Groban pleasantly surprises (strong emphasis on the ‘pleasant’) with his choice to cover the traditional Celtic song “She Moved Through the Fair.” The song features Groban’s sig-nature smooth vocals with a new, modern take on the beautiful tune. Reason #5: Below The LineIt’ll start small. Maybe a toe-tap here and there, but before you know it, it’ll become a full-fledged dance! Rhythmic beats, lively percussion and touching lyrics come together to make up “Be-low The Line,” track #5 on “All That Echoes” and one that is guaranteed to satisfy. I dare you to try and listen to it only once. Well I know I said I was going to give you 16 reasons to buy Gro-ban’s album, but it seems I’ve run out of space! I suppose that’s to be expected when discussing the talent that is Josh Groban. I guess you’ll just have to purchase the “All That Echoes” exclu-sive deluxe edition with four bonus tracks and hear reasons #6 through #16 for yourself. There’s the uplifting cover of Stevie Wonder’s “I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever), the beautiful duet with Italian singer Laura Pausini, the touching rendition of Jimmy Webb’s “The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress,” and so much more. It goes without saying that all of Groban’s albums are carefully constructed masterpieces of music and song and I guarantee “All That Echoes” is no exception. *A Grobanite is the official name of a Josh Groban fan <

48 :: SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW

WEALTH MANAGEMENT AND OFFSHORE BANK ACCOUNTS - BY MARK L. HORWITZ

> Managing wealth involves many as-pects including acquiring, investing, and pre-serving and safeguarding assets. Offshore banks may be part of a wealth management strategy as a means to invest, preserve and safeguard wealth. Offshore banks have re-ceived attention in the last few years as U.S. authorities have forced the disclosure of U.S. account holders.

The government actions do not mean that offshore accounts are illegal. Except in rarecircumstances, U.S. citizens may have bank accounts and other forms of property out-side of the United States. U.S. citizens must, however, report offshore accounts over $10,000 and certain other assets. In addi-tion, all income earned must be reported to the IRS even if earned offshore.

U.S. taxes on offshore income may be reduced by the taxes paid to a foreign country.

Offshore accounts are legal under U.S. law as long as necessary proper disclosure ismade. If disclosure of offshore accounts is not made, a person risks criminal fines, imprisonment and civil penalties. People with offshore accounts and income, who have not made disclosure to the IRS, risk criminal prosecution.

Criminal prosecution can be avoided by en-try into the Offshore Voluntary Disclosure Program (OVDP) offered by the IRS. This program is not available once the IRS re-ceives records from an offshore bank. Act-ing quickly to enter the OVDP is important, especially if the offshore bank is preparing to turn over records to the IRS.<

> Put down the Slim Fast® bar, forget the cabbage soup and opt for a new long-term lifestyle/diet instead of a new short-term diet: You can get your beach body and maintain it, unlike crash diets, which wel-come back the pounds you thought you said goodbye to.

Believe it or not, the hottest diet around is a raw food one. Some of the most famous celebrities do it, including Demi Moore and Alicia Silverstone. Plant-based diets can be a great source to a healthy life and a fit body. Plants in their natural state, or rawism, may be the most wholesome for your body. Studies have shown that raw vegetables re-duce the risk of oral, laryngeal, pharyngeal, esophageal and gastric cancers. Cruciferous vegetables, including cabbages, broccoli and kale are rich in fiber, vitamins and disease-fighting phytochemicals. These vegetables also reduce the risk of bladder cancer. Plus, raw vegetables lower cholesterol and im-prove glucose levels since they are low in fats and sugars, and are high in fiber.

Although the raw food diet is considered extremely nutritious and healthy, experts suggest you still take supplements, especial-ly vitamin B12, vitamin D, iron, calcium, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids.

According to the American Dietetic As-sociation, there are certain guidelines raw foodists can follow in order to get these nutrients in addition to taking the vitamins. For instance, a plant-based dieter should eat twice as much iron as non-vegetarians do.

Iron can be found in tofu, legumes, cashews and almonds. Eight servings a day of calcium-rich foods such as bok choy, soybeans, tem-peh, figs, and cabbage—is suggested. Eating fortified breakfast cereals, nutritional yeast and fortified soymilk are excellent sources of vitamin B12. Also, include omega-3 sourc-es, which are found in flaxseed, walnuts and soybean oil.

The absorption of zinc into the body is enhanced by a diet high in animal protein rather than a diet rich in plant proteins. Phytates, which are found in foods such as cereals, whole grain breads, and legumes, can decrease zinc absorption, so the ADA recommends raw foodists soak and sprout their beans, seeds and grains to help the body absorb the zinc.

ADA also suggests that a raw foodist be vigilant about vitamin D because most raw foods exclude it and low levels can weaken the bones. Vitamin D-fortified foods include specific brands of soymilk and rice milk. The most known brand of soymilk is Silk®,

which is vitamin D fortified. Some breakfast cereals and margarines are also rich in vi-tamin D.

Raw foodists don’t often cook, but they spend a lot of their time preparing the food by chopping, peeling, straining, blending and dehydrating. They use food dehydrators rather than stoves and ovens. Dehydrat-ing dries the food and makes the fruits and vegetables crunchier. Nothing can be heated over 115–118°F. According to WebMD, 75 percent of the diet consists of fruits and vegetables.

Note: It’s not without cons – a plant-based diet is a lifestyle choice, and some of the cons are that raw food diets often require tedious preparation, soaking and sprouting beans, seeds and grains, etc… If you’re not a vegan raw foodist, your diet might also in-clude raw (unpasteurized) milk and cheese, raw eggs, raw fish, and even some raw meat, which can be harmful to your health. So, it is not for everyone.

Most raw foodists don’t consider a raw food diet as a weight loss regimen but rath-er a lifestyle choice, however, you will likely shed those extra pounds due to naturally consuming fewer calories.

As always, Consult With Your Doctor be-fore starting this or any new regimen. <

In closing as a general dentist it is imperative that I work with a team of experts and these professionals are part of my team.

Dr. Carl Bilancione & Staff

> Dental offices have changed the way they utilize x-rays. Cone Beam Computer-ized Tomography (CBCT) allows a dentist to safely obtain a 3-dimensional view of the mouth. This new technology is improving diagnosis, facilitating treatment planning and enhancing opportunities for patient educa-tion. In the past, patients who needed 3-D scans were referred out to a hospital or imaging centers to obtain medical CTs. This was not only inconvenient and expensive, but it also exposed patients to more radia-tion than was necessary.

Recently, articles have appeared caution-ing the public about the increased health risks from medical CT scans. While it is worthwhile to take precautions to avoid exposure to unnecessary radiation, it is also important to avoid confusing radiation exposure statistics. For example, a typical medical CT scan of the head and neck will produce approximately 1500 micro Seiverts of radiation. A CBCT produces on average of 120 micro Seiverts of radiation. This is slightly higher than the amount of radiation you would get from a standard chest x-ray.

One of the advantages to utilizing a CBCT is the diagnostic quality. A CBCT will re-veal approximately 24 – 33% more pathol-

ogy than standard dental films. In addition, dentists can use CBCT scans to treatment plan complex procedures (such as dental implants) on a computer prior to going into the mouth. This minimizes error and pro-vides a superior result for patients.

For example, the picture on the top shows a dental implant planned on a traditional dental film. According to the picture, the implant is in good position and should be very successful. However, the CBCT scan (bottom picture) shows a much different scenario. If the surgery was performed utilizing only the traditional film, the bot-tom of the implant would have perforated the bone potentially causing serious nerve damage or a life threatening bleeding prob-lem. In this case, the dental surgeon avoid-ed a potentially catastrophic event prior to even touching the patient.

According to the FDA: “The clinical benefit of a medically appropriate X-ray imaging exam outweighs the small radiation risk”. Your dentist will only recommend a CBCT scan if necessary. If your dentist does rec-ommend a scan, you can be confident that it will help determine the best treatment option and improve health outcomes lead-ing to better overall care. <

VENOUS INSUFFICIENCY BY CHARLES S.C. GARNETTE, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Approximately 25 million Americans suffer from venous reflux disease or venous in-sufficiency. Of these, approxi-mately 15-20% of men, and 30-40% women experience severe complications such as bleeding, ulceration, unrelent-ing swelling of the legs.

COMMON SYMPTOMS INCLUDE:

• Varicose Veins• Pain• Swollen Legs• Heavy, Tired (fatigued), ach-ing legs, relieved by sitting and leg elevation.• Skin changes and leg ulcers.

Vascular disease affects both men and women.

With regards to varicose veins, spider veins and other vein problems, it is estimated that in America, approximate-ly 75% of women and 43% of men will experience varicose veins or telanjectasias by the time they are in their 60’s.

Classification of Venous Insuf-ficiency is divided into prima-ry venous insufficiency, which includes varicose veins and telangiectasias (spider veins); and severe chronic venous

insufficiency (CVI), which, in addition to the above, also encompasses all of the skin changes of advanced venous dysfunction.

BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION ABOUT VARICOSE VEINS.

Venous insufficiency with its skin changes, including vari-cose veins, is often branded as cosmetic. Although not im-mediately life threatening, it is a significant problem with real symptoms and long term con-sequences, not to mention the emotional impact of its disfig-uring appearance.

Many individuals with varicose veins and spider veins do not understand the significance of these manifestations and that they may be from chronic venous insufficiency. Later in life, however, when severe complications, such as bleed-ing from ruptured varicosities, ulceration, and disfiguring skin changes, present themselves, the impact of the problem is suddenly more visible.

CAUSES OF VARICOSE VEINS ARE MULTIFACTORIAL:

Whether the initial cause is genetics, pregnancy, prolonged

standing, inadequate exercise, excessive weight, damaged or thrombosed (clotted) veins, the physiology of varicose veins is always the same. The valves in the superficial veins become damaged (or incom-petent as referred to by phy-sicians) and veins near the surface become stretched, distorted and dilated as a result of increased pressures within the veins.

The treatment of varicose veins continues to evolve, and methods for treating this disease process with minimal interference in everyday func-tion is a key component of modern day therapeutic in-terventions. The introduction of minimally invasive therapies over the past 10 to 15 years is revolutionizing the approach to vein care.

OUR PRACTICE:

In Real Estate > During the past year or so the real estate market has flourished mightily, due to a host of eco-nomic factors. The fall of housing prices during this downturn has created the opportunity for many pre-viously unqualified buyers to enter the home own-ership area. Coupled with this is the entry into the marketplace of investors, both local and foreign who are seizing the opportunity to own the American Dream at a discount, along with those once again coming into the market due to the upturn in new home building.

Listing a property may seem to be a simple matter but selling becomes a many faceted procedure. Tim-ing is certainly a large percentage of making a suc-cessful sale but having the savvy to match a buyer with seller requires lots of work, creativity, negotiat-ing ability and the ability to provide a high level of trust between parties. Further, as with attending an initial employment interview, the first impression is made based on the presentation of the applicant or selling agent as is the case in the real estate market.

We feature a sampling of sales professionals with proven track records within our community, who continuously ‘do their homework’ and look good 100% of the time...a combination which makes for an educated and pleasing sales presentation. <

less than one year under her belt, Abby was

named Rookie of The Year in her office.

When the market began to recede in 2006,

many local real estate agents decided to

throw in the towel. Buyers were in short

supply and very few people could afford to

list their homes due to severe depreciation.

Rather than complain about the bleak

conditions of the newly depressed market,

Abby was able to use them to her advantage

and developed systems to sell REO (bank-

was traditionally regarded as a highly

unfavorable real estate market, Abby and

her team were able to close over 170

transactions in one year. Since then, Abby

has been honored with numerous awards

from local magazines, RE/MAX, and even

the Wall Street Journal.

Early in 2012, Abby took on a new role in

her life. She and her supportive husband

brought a beautiful baby girl into the world.

Taking on the role of mom can be a challenge

in its own right. Adding this new responsibil-

Abby’s dedication to her clients is second to

ing this diverse background into a reward-

ing and enjoyable experience for her cus-

tomers.

Heather Unger, a long time resident of the

Central Florida area graduated from the

University of Central Florida with a degree

in Management Information Systems. Dur-

ing her computer career, she realized that

this was not her calling and followed her

true passion in the Construction and Real

Estate Industry. Her passion for real estate

started early in life as a daughter of a con-

tractor. Mrs. Unger started her building ca-

reer as a Licensed General Contractor by

forming G & H Developers, LLC in Michigan

where she originally hails. Soon after that,

she entered the field of Real Estate in 2004

and continued to hone her skill set by ob-

taining her brokers license in 2012. Her firm

belief in education lead her to earn her GRI

& CDPE designations as well as her CLHMS

(Certified Luxury Home Marketing Special-

ist) only held by the top 1% of Realtors. A

few of Mrs. Unger’s accolades include being

ranked 12th in the State of Florida among

all RE/MAX individual agents, also receiving

the highest RE/MAX award of Chairman’s

club, and she continues to remain one of

the TOP 50 agents in all of Central Florida.

Heather has also appeared on many tele-

vision shows and was chosen for her up-

beat and outgoing personality as one of the

contestants on ABC’s The Bachelor season

7. While her stay was short lived, the ex-

citement of traveling, and being in front of

the camera, led her to appear on many Lo-

cal news casts as an area expert informing

consumers about the Real Estate Industry.

As an area specialist, she was selected for

her knowledge by HGTV and is featured on

numerous shows with her clients including,

“My House is Worth, What?” and “House

Hunters.”

While awards and recognition are great,

Heathers goal has always been to make her

customers happy and to make buying and

selling enjoyable. Born from this philosophy

Heather opened her own brokerage in Jan-

uary 2013, LemonTree Realty.

LemonTree Realty is a fresh approach to

real estate. Since opening their doors they

have proven their worth over the compe-

tition by assisting numerous home buyers

put down roots in Central Florida and list-

ing homes in some of the most prestigious

areas including Isleworth, Country Club of

Orlando, and Winter Park, as well as assist-

ing with the sale of a new development of

homes in Downtown Orlando. As a long

time supporter of the SPCA, a portion of

all sales at LemonTree Realty is donated to

help local animal shelters.<

> Valerie Wanzer is a sales associate

with Sommerville Real Estate Group in Or-

lando Florida and has been in the business

for more than 18 years. A native of Bir-

mingham, Alabama, Valerie moved to Orlan-

do from Atlanta, Georgia in 1997, says she

can’t imagine living anywhere else and now

considers Florida her home. Her customers

refer to her as “a down home and sophis-

ticated girl who really goes out of her way

to take care of you and put you at ease”.

More than 97% of her business is referral

which says a lot about what type of agent

she strives to be to all of her customers.

She is definitely NOT a “one hit wonder”

with her customers. Not only do they refer

her to their friends, family etc. many of them

have personally used her for several real es-

tate transactions as well. Valerie has been

the recipient of numerous awards such as

being ranked in the top 7% of agents as a

“Five Star Best in Client Satisfaction Agent”.

Most recently she was honored when she

was entered into “Hot 100 Agents Hall of

Fame” for 2012.

Valerie is a hard worker and truly goes

above and beyond the call of duty in looking

after the best interests of her clients.

“Simply put she is FANTABULOUS! Sadly

for us due to illness and loss of employment,

we needed her assistance with a short sale.

Val never left a stone unturned. We were

always kept informed of every little step of

the process. She fought hard for us and I

must say she is all about compassion and

what is best for YOU the client. Valerie al-

ways had time to listen, to care and even dry

a tear or two. Losing our home was an ex-

tremely emotional experience but Val made

it go unbelievably smooth and was with us

to the end and now we can start over and

breath again. Thank you so much Val with all

our hearts.” - Joe & Greta Whitlock

“I’ve had the pleasure of being Valerie’s

broker for over 4 years and I must admit

I’m not surprised to hear she has received

this award! Valerie goes above and beyond

for other Realtors and her clients, she

will never have a closing with an unsatis-

fied client. I’ve not met a more giving and

compassionate person who truly loves

what she does. I couldn’t be more proud

of her continued success and achievements.

She is one of the best in the industry!”

- Kara Sommerville

Valerie contributes the majority of her

success to a good home support system,

namely her husband of 23 years Kenneth, a

network engineer and their daughter Ajah,

a student at Valencia College. She considers

herself very fortunate and says her broker

Kara Sommerville is the kind of broker

agents dream of having because she is there

to help you in every possible way without

“smothering” you and makes sure you re-

ceive every dime you are worth. That’s a

combination that just can’t be beat.<

> Susan Logan, real estate broker and

owner of Logan Land & Homes, Inc., opened

her own business in 1989 and has been go-

ing strong ever since. She and her team

of agents have withstood the test of time.

They have always believed the number one

priority is to keep your customers interest

above your own and to deliver spotless ser-

vice. Their long list of repeat clients buying

and selling is proof of their professionalism

and knowledge of the industry.

As a broker in the area for so many years,

Susan’s experience is invaluable, particularly

in the area of corporate relocation. She

has sold over 115 homes with one Fortune

500 company in the area and has sold many

other homes for clients who have been

transferred in or out of town with other

prominent employers in Central Florida.

The international market has also been very

good to Susan and her agents. With the

warm weather and sunshine, Orlando is the

perfect place for them to purchase a second

home. Many of her international sales come

from the Toronto, Canada area and the U.K.

Contrary to what one may suspect, Susan

was not born a REALTOR. This Florida

transplant grew up in northern Ohio, just

west of Cleveland. At the age of 19, she

moved to Altamonte Springs and by age

20 had taken her real estate classes at Rol-

lins College (Winter Park), obtaining her

state license in 1974. She was one of the

youngest students in the class at the time

and knew real estate would be her career

choice in life.

In spite of her busy schedule, Susan has al-

ways endeavored to give back to the com-

munity. The Orlando Regional Realtor As-

sociation (ORRA) presented her with the

Pillar of the Community Award in 2011 for

her unselfish volunteer service. Her list of

affiliations is staggering. She continues to

serve as a state director for Florida Real-

tors and has served her local Realtor as-

sociation (ORRA) as a director for three

years. She is a member of the Seminole

County Regional Chamber of Commerce,

along with the Asian American Chamber of

Commerce. She holds membership in the

National Association of Realtors, Women’s

Council of Realtors, and is also a member of

the New Smyrna Beach Board of Realtors.

She has been recognized for her continuous

service as the South Seminole SERTOMA

(SERvice TO MANkind) Club’s Director of

Student Recognition. The Club honors out-

standing fifth grade students with a Super

Student breakfast where Susan has chaired

that program for over 18 years.

She and her agents are primarily based out

of the Heathrow/Lake Forest area of Semi-

nole County, but facilitate real estate trans-

actions all over the Orlando area, including

New Smyrna Beach. Her husband of nearly

20 years, Barry Fail, also holds a real estate

license and is invaluable to her when she

has more than one client in town at the

same time. When not working, the couple

enjoys time together traveling and spending

time at their second home in New Smyrna

Beach.<

76 :: RENAISSANCE MEN - REAL ESTATE

> Although he has been fortunate

enough to jetset around the world, Orlan-

do is the only place that Michael Kara calls

home. Michael’s passion for Central Florida

real estate is evident due to his increasing

success in this field. In fact, after 15 years of

dedication to this highly competitive region,

Michael is proud to be ranked in the top

one percent of all real estate agents in the

area.

Michael’s prosperity can be attributed to

his determination and resilience. As Michael

himself states, “I’m excited to find new op-

portunities with the changing market each

year.” He refused to let a declining market

stand in his way, and instead of simply try-

ing to weather the storm, Michael identified

opportunity amidst the recession. Case in

point: in 2008 Michael’s companies grew

100%, while most businesses collapsed un-

der the economic pressure. Furthermore,

Michael’s investors weathered the uncer-

tain market particularly well, using Michael’s

guidance, advice, and data to ensure top

profits with minimal risk.

Over the years, Michael has adapted as his

client’s needs diversified. He has ample ex-

perience in every facet of the real estate

market imaginable, from building custom

homes and developments to a range of

commercial investments. After operating his

own highly-successful boutique real estate

firm for 15 years, Michael made the decision

to purchase a Re/Max franchise. This has en-

abled his staff and clients to take advantage

of the brand power and global networking

resources made available by Re/Max, po-

sitioning Michael and his team to become

the new powerhouse in the Orlando luxury

market.

Recently, he’s gained accolades from coast

to coast with his exclusive access to a

community of elite brokers known as the

Inner Circle - 200 real estate profession-

als from across the country representing

over $1 billion of transactions in 2012. This

group’s collective experience and personal

networking allows deals to happen quickly,

reliably and often privately. It’s global con-

nections like these, along with a drive to do

things that others won’t, that push Michael

to the bleeding edge of real estate. He regu-

larly finds properties that aren’t even on

the market and turns them into his client’s

dream.

Michael is always networking, exploring and

attending every new event, venue and ex-

perience Orlando has to offer. With an in-

satiable appetite for adrenaline, much of his

spare time is spent doing extreme sports.

However, he also loves to take some less-

extreme adventures with his favorite travel-

ing companion: his five-year-old son Gavin.

Who knows what the future holds for Mi-

chael? He’s constantly seeking new real

estate ventures, including some recent talks

with US Thrill Rides, a leading developer and

manufacturer of amusement attractions. It’s

a fitting match since there’s always some-

thing new and exciting on the horizon with

Michael Kara.<

> At Privé Salon Orlando it’s all about customer service. It’s an experience from the minute you walk through the front door and a truly unique one at that. They strive to meet every client’s individual needs and to go beyond just ‘getting it right.’ Their dai-ly goal is to far exceed your expectations in ways you didn’t even know they could. One special way in which Privé achieves this is with 10-minute consultations that every client must go through before any styling starts.

“It doesn’t matter if you’ve been here 50 times before because we don’t know if you still want to do the same thing or if you want to do something else. Consultation is # one. It’s important to really understand what the customers need and what they are hoping to achieve before we decide to cut or style anyone’s hair,” says Revi Rofé the owner and manager of Privé Orlando.

Be prepared to answer all kinds of ques-tions at your consultation because when it comes to hair at Privé, everything is taken into consideration and no stone is left un-turned. Privé is a departmentalized salon, which means every employee specializes in his or her craft. If it’s color or if it’s style, they master what their passion is and you’re going to get full attention on just that as a result. Employees are hired only after an extensive tryout process and they regularly receive new, high quality education on the latest trends and styles.

“Every single one of my stylist here are very talented. We do not hire anyone that we don’t feel 100% comfortable with in know-ing that they can provide the same great service as everyone else here.” says Rofé.

“I come here all the time. They have the best staff. They know what they’re do-ing. They’re on top of everything. You can bring them a picture and they know what you want and they know what looks good. They’re not just trying to get your business.

They want their clients to be happy and they want them to look good.” said Marnie Bialosuknia, a regular at Privé.

First timer Dawn Fitzpatrick said the stylist working on her was the first person to ever look at her hair and do what exactly what Dawn wanted.

“It’s been an awesome experience! I’m defi-nitely coming back.”

Not only does Privé know how to take care of your hair, they also know how to take care of you. They’ll provide you with top quality service that’ll include everything from cappuccinos and wine to Saturday mi-mosas. Two tiers of stylist and colorist allow Privé to provide different experiences that can accommodate different budgets. Their prices haven’t changed since they opened nearly 7 years ago and neither has their love for hair. Privé does hair for custom-ers, photo shoots, magazines, fashion shows, charity events...you name it! Selected by Orlando Style readers’ for the 2012 Read-ers’ Choice Award, Privé was awarded with the prestigious Silver Award for Best Hair Service. If you want top-of-the-line hair products, great services and treatments then the Privé Salon Experience is waiting for you! <

80 :: COCKTAIL HOUR

> So for the wine purists who believe wine should be left to its own devices and is not to be used as a plaything, beware of what the following article will do to your thought process. While there is no question most wines stand-alone and shine brightest by themselves, there is room to find new ways to get them involved behind the bar. I mean who wants to watch someone take a first growth Bordeaux and squeeze an or-ange into it, no sane person. That said here are a few ways where wine and creative bartending coexist in perfect harmony.

I know we have all sipped on varying recipes when it comes to the sangria or the sta-ple seen at any respectable brunch known as the mimosa. We have seen these two worlds come together for years now in those two simple recipes alone. With san-gria you usually see brandy and fruit based liquors being introduced to a dry red that just does not stand well by itself. Heaped into that sangria pitcher are all matters of fresh citrus and whatever else one adds to make their “secret” sangria recipe. Then you have the quintessential drink with brunch, the mimosa. If you are fortunate to be at a place where you get fresh squeezed orange juice added to that sparkler rather some watered down pasteurized juice, you know there is a difference between a good or bad mimosa. Whether it is a sparkler that was left over from last night or that bottle just cheap enough to melt the guilt away by adding something to it, everyone has ex-perimented with what they use. It is time for you to play with those old, classic reci-

pes and try some new ideas. There is the play on the classic sangria by doing white sangria instead. The fruits usually change up to things like peach, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries and pears. The white wine of choice for me is Sauvignon Blanc in this play on sangria. A great spirit to add to this great summer concoction is elderflower liquor. It goes a long way to brighten up all those fla-vors while adding just the right amount of sweetness. Top all of his with a little soda water and you are ready to put on your swimsuit, grab a pitcher of white sangria and head to the nearest beach party. A great way to play with a mimosa is to find some of the new bitters available on the market now. This might take a little more research and testing to get it right but it is well worth it. I like to find a nice domestic Blanc de blancs and add fresh squeezed orange juice, or one actual orange squeezed directly into your glass. Throw in a dash or two of blood orange bitters and fill with your sparkling wine and you are good to go. I find adding bitters always is a helper for that Saturday night hangover that you brought to Sunday brunch. It is basically taking parts of the old school Champagne cocktail and introducing it to the classic mimosa.

There is a trend towards the wine cocktail that will be showing up more and more in 2013. We are going back to the days of the appreciation of the low-alcohol cocktail. The shift from drinks that get you drunk to realizing the benefit of actually enjoying the flavor of your drink is not new. The move-ment has been steadily changing back to

those old days for a few years now and the wine cocktail is just one way to see how it is evolving. Your local cocktail focused bar will have these options for you if you just ask the creative bartender behind it. There are many other options when it comes to intertwining wine and spirits, as you will see this year. While some might be popping up in carafe or punch form, others will be to order. Wines are really a good vessel to highlight flavors through the cocktail. They are typically lower in alcohol and are able to help other flavors shine through. So while you do not want to see someone open a highly rated wine and mix it with anything other than your empty wine glass, there is a place of harmony for wine and mixology to get along. So wake up your mimosa with something new or revamp that sangria to this decade. Whatever you decide do not be afraid to try whatever wine cocktail your talented local bartender has created. More often than not you will walk away happy and with a better appreciation of what other ways wine can be used. <

Maroon 5

Following the release of their best-

selling new album, “Overexposed,”

Grammy-winning recording artist

Maroon 5 have announced their 2013

North American tour presented by

Sony Xperia™ Smartphones. Neon

Trees and Owl City will join maroon

5 on all dates making this the hottest

concert package of the spring.

This past summer marked the de-

but of Maroon 5’s highly anticipated

fourth studio album, “Overexposed.”

Recorded in Los Angeles, CA, the

release is a rich, pop-infused collec-

tion that Rolling Stone referred to

as “their best yet,” and People Maga-

zine called “sweet soul-kissed pop.”

The release of the album quickly

reinforced the group’s status as a

powerhouse in popular music. “Over-

exposed” features a series of chart-

topping singles including: “Payphone,”

which immediately shot straight

to number one on both the Top 40

and Hot AC charts and “One More

Night,” which has been at number

one on the Billboard Hot 100 for five

straight weeks. The third single off of

the album, “Daylight,” impacted radio

this past November and debuted on

the NBC hit series “The Voice.”

Capturing their first of three Gram-

my® Awards as “Best New Artist” in

2005 and going on to sell more than

17 million albums worldwide, Ma-

roon 5’s releases have gone gold and

platinum in more than 35 countries.

The band won over fans and critics

alike with the hybrid rock/R&B sound

they introduced on their debut al-

bum, “Songs About Jane” and their

double platinum album, “It Won’t Be

Soon Before Long,” which included

hits like “Makes Me Wonder” and “If I

Never See Your Face Again.” In 2010,

the band released their third studio

album, “Hands All Over,” which also

recently went platinum. The collec-

tion featured two hit singles including

the Hot AC smash “Misery” and the

anthemic “Moves Like Jagger,” which

climbed to the number one spot on

the Top 40 and Hot AC charts and

also claimed the number one spot on
