PUBLISHER’S NOTE

14

ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

Dear Readers,

Did you hear the latest headline in Style News?

A family from Orlando, Florida made a plea for the public’s help Wednesday in getting back $35,000 worth of collectibles that were stolen from their home.

Among the items taken included a complete collection of Orlando Style Magazines with the very rare and valuable early year copies.

The collectibles — which he amassed over a 13-year period — were stolen sometime between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday, the owner said.

They added that they believed they had been deliberately targeted.“You see the broken glass. They came in through the window, and they took everything that’s high-end,” the owner told the media.

A surveillance system in the home was also disabled during the time when power to the home was cut.

The owner had a message to whoever was responsible for taking the items.

“You’re not going to be able to sell that stuff, guys. They’re going to know you took it,” he said.

Whoa, what a shocker this family had to go through. We at Orlando Style will try to help and see if we can dig deep into our archives and help replace this valuable collection.

Well, another one worthy to collect is probably this issue in your hands: the Body and Soul issue with an amazing photo essay done by photographer Tejal Patni with a homage to Earth Day, a great holiday celebrated this month.

Also, let us know if you like to join the prestigious collectors club of Style. Our web audience is also expanding, and unlike others, we do not buy any contacts or friends. We like to keep everything real and honest with Style Magazines, which is the source of all things luxury for you, our true friends.

Launching within this very exciting issue is our “5 star in Real Estate ©” voted by you, our readers and local real estate professionals. Thank you for your immense participation. Congratulations to the professionals listed.

As always, we love to hear from you and what you think about this issue, what you liked the most, and what you want to see next month.

All the best with warm sunny days ahead! Hope you didn’t have too much trouble getting adjusted to “summer time.”

Sincerely,

Sven J. BodePublisher

The first quarter of 2016 is officially over and that’s no April Fool’s joke! The year is swiftly passing by so make sure you’re staying up to date on the most happening events in Orlando by sticking with Style Magazines. This month we’ll be summing up an assortment of thrilling activities that took place in the City Beautiful all March long. Here are the highlights, just in case you missed it! Central Florida’s fun and unique storytelling series is back! On March 2nd, Orlando Story Club picked up right where they left off with a fantastic evening of entertainment where the audience creates the show. Located at The Abbey, attendees were invited to throw their name in a hat and then ten participants were chosen to tell a five minute story that connected to the theme prompt of “our bodies.” All the stories were told without notes, which led to unpredictable, outrageous and sometimes poignant results. Judges were randomly selected from the audience and special story prizes were awarded to participants at the end of the evening. All proceeds raised from the event went to support The Assistance Fund. This month’s event is themed “Surprise!” and takes place on April 6th. Swing by The Abbey and don’t miss out on the storytelling fun!

Spring is in full bloom at the 2016 Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival! On March 2nd, Epcot was transformed into a floral paradise where guests could enjoy the glow of enchanting topiaries and savor seasonal foods at Outdoor Kitchens around World Showcase. In-between strolling through creative gardens and reconnecting with nature, guests also had the chance to revisit their love of classic hits with the 2016 Garden Rocks Concert Series at the America Gardens Theatre. Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, guests grooved to live throwback beats all while taking in the gorgeous waterfront view at the spacious outdoor venue. Don’t forget to plan your own trip to one of Orlando’s favorite events! The Flower & Garden Festival continues through May 30th.

More than 100,000 Harley-Davidson enthusiasts from across the globe turned out for Bike Week

Orlando 2016! The annual event was held from March 5th-13th and headquartered at the Orlando Harley-Davidson Historic Factory Dealership, a detailed re-creation of the 1910 factory and the 1903 “shack” in which the Harley legend was born. Visitors to the pirate themed event were treated to a variety of exciting festivities including a Pirate Party, fantastic live music by Whitey Morgan and the 78’s and not-to-be-missed shows such as jaw-dropping bike tricks by Busted Knuckles Stunt Tour. Various vendors were also set up all week long to provide visitors with all kinds of biker apparel, merchandise and more.

Orlando was looking a little green last month, but there were smiles all around as the city celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with Wall Street Plaza’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Block Party. On Saturday March 12th, eager party-goers were able to prepare for the big day with the popular St. Practice Day Party. Then on Thursday March 17th, it was time for the main event and Wall Street Plaza was sure not to disappoint! Downtown Orlando’s popular destination was a sea of green as thousands showed up to shake their shamrocks and drink colossal amounts of beer. Even a few leprechauns were spotted joining in on the fun! Both events were a massive hit with unbeatable drink specials, rocking live music, Irish themed food and beverages and plenty of St. Patrick’s Day shenanigans.

Lakeridge Winery is known for throwing unforgettable festivals with one of their signature events being the Annual Wine & Seafood Festival, which marks the beginning of springtime for the entire community. From March 18th-20th, the beloved event returned to Clermont for its 8th year. As always, the warmer weather brought all ages out as guests enjoyed fantastic live music and exciting entertainment throughout the entire weekend. Visitors also browsed the artwork of local artists and crafters while enjoying Lakeridge wine, beer, soft drinks, a variety of tasty seafood specialties and complimentary Winery tours. A $2 Donation at the door went to benefit The Autism Society of Greater Orlando.

From April 21-April 23, The 16th Annual Florida Music Festival puts on three nights of not-to-be-missed shows that light up downtown Orlando with the sounds of music fans coming together for an unforgettable experience. Each night starting at 7pm, you’ll be in for an evening of enjoying a variety of bands playing everything from

pop and hip hop to rock and country! With more than 50 artists on over a dozen stages, there is sure to be a show that will suit your style.

Come take a listen to up-and-coming bands from Orlando and around the world in one of the several venues throughout Downtown Orlando. Best of all, every showcase venue is free admission this year, so you can enjoy a music-filled night out at no cost!

The Florida Music Festival is famous for discovering unknown artists and being one of the first platforms that help to skyrocket them into the spotlight, so this is your chance

to get a glimpse of bands and musicians that everyone will be talking about in the years to come. Even Taylor Swift made an early appearance at the Florida Music Festival at a young age. The country-turned-pop singer performed at Shine on Wall St. Plaza back in 2002, and now, 14 years later, the Festival is still highlighting some of the greats in the making. The Festival has served as a stage for some of the biggest rock bands over the past decades, including Third Eye Blind, Buckcherry, and Flogging Molly. This show will have you filling up your playlists now with future radio hits from upcoming stars.

Losing weight is a common trend that only seems to worsen with time. According to professor Jennifer Kuk of health science at York University in Toronto, “We’re finding that weight management is much more complex than just energy in versus energy out.” Factors of increased chemicals and hormones in our foods and beauty products, along with a growing amount of daily stress attribute to this problem. Some say just working out more frequently, eating smaller portions and controlling the time of certain meals is all that is needed to shed those extra pounds. But what if that just isn’t working? Scientifically speaking most know little about the true science of controlling human body mass.

A new diet has emerged in such as a struggle and some have found their solution in achieving optimal ketosis. Ketosis is a condition characterized by raised levels of ketone in the body associated with abnormal fat metabolism. When the body does not have enough carbohydrates from food for your cells to burn for energy, it burns fat instead, thus creating ketones. The ketogenic

diet is a high-fat, moderate-protein; low-carbohydrate diet that forces the body to burn fats rather than carbohydrates.

On average a healthy diet consumes about 2,000 calories a day, which includes about 225 to 325 grams of carbohydrates. Someone starting a keto-diet typically cuts the amount of carbohydrates to between 20-30 grams daily with most of the carbs coming from vegetables, nuts and dairy. Typically the weekly diet breaks down to about 70 percent fats, 25 perfect protein and 5 percent carbohydrates.

Like any type of diet plan one must be cautious. Staying extremely hydrated and maintaining a healthy amount of nutrition throughout the day is important. It is perfectly normal to feel symptoms such as headaches, flu-like feelings, dizziness and aggravation within the first few weeks as your

body recalibrates itself to burn fat instead of carbs for energy. Do not fret, your body is avidly reteaching itself to find the alternate root for vitality.

The common misconception is that this diet is used to starve a person from carbohydrates altogether. On the contrary, it is used to assist in curbing one’s appetite and kick starting the body into a useful cycle of regulating the amount of fat storage. The ketogenic diet plan has also been known to assist in not only weight loss but the lowering of cholesterol and providing of sustainably sourced energy. Similar processes have been found in the well known Atkins and Paleo diets.

Losing steam on your New Year’s diet? Maybe the ketosis diet is the new start you need in 2016. As always consult your doctor before starting a new diet regime.

THE KETOGENIC DIET IS A HIGH-FAT, MODERATE-PROTEIN; LOW-CARBOHYDRATE DIET THAT FORCES THE BODY TO BURN FATS RATHER THAN CARBOHYDRATES.

OUT & ABOUT

Are you bored from your workout routine and tired of working out on the same gym equipment? Many people can get stuck working in the same routine and can end up feeling like their physical health is a burden. If you are stressed from your long week or need a little relaxation, you can make the West Orange Trail a part of your physical and mental workout.

The West Orange Trail is home to many runners, bikers, joggers, birds, trees, and woodland creatures. The 22 mile, soon to be 36, paved trail passes through downtown Oakland, Winter Garden, and Apopka. Stretching across miles of greenery, to urban settings, to the kissing shores of Lake Apopka, the West Orange Trail is a sublime location for your next run, allowing yourself to connect with your most peaceful self. The West Orange Trail offers four main stations equipped with water fountains, restrooms, picnic tables, and playgrounds. One station, the Killarney Station, offers skate and bike rentals, concession stands, as well as basketball and tennis courts. Built on old railroad alignments, The West Orange Trail and its serene paths pass through restaurants and shops of downtown Winter Garden, then turn into mellow and dim thinly wooded areas.

The tranquil scenery takes your run on a euphoric journey incorporating a total awareness of mind and body. Budding orange groves and elevating hills allow for your runner’s high to grow and heighten as you work your body into full performance. Take a break, and explore the animals and natural wetlands at the Oakland Nature Preserve, located along the the West Orange Trail. Shaded by the draped Spanish moss, run through the oak and pine, bringing your mind to full enlightenment. The trail will bring you to the local landmark, the old railroad bridge. This wooden bridge lifts your mind and body across I-75 leading you towards an unexpected section of the trail, the Briley Farm, where you can spot exotic animals such as peacocks and Watusi cattle. The trail leading you from Winter Garden to Apopka, weaves around a golf course then follows a Buddhist Temple before leading you along an equestrian trail, to eventually a beautiful tree canopy, perfect for shade and meditation along your run. The Tildenville outpost is home to a butterfly garden, bursting with lively colors from these charming creatures, exercising your mental health as well.

Running through the outdoors rather than a gym has been proven to have a positive effect on mental health. Studies have found that the atmosphere of trees and grass lowered brain stress levels. Richard Mitchell, researcher and professor at Glasgow University, claims “The brain likes to be in the natural environment and it reacts to being there by turning down our stress response. Being in areas that have lots of trees and grassy areas help to calm us down.” In this study, there was around a 50% improvement in people’s mental health if they were physically active in the natural environment, compared to people who weren’t. The West Orange Trail is the perfect place to experience natural environments to provide nourishment to your physical and mental wellbeing. The relaxing setting, the calming sounds and the vivid sights, offer a wide variety of exercise. Your run won’t be a tedious chore, it will be an opportunity to connect your mind and body with nature, allowing you to gain positivity in your physical and mental health.

As always, consult with your doctor before beginning any new exercise regimen.

RUN LIKE A STAR!

MARK ZUCKERBERG

If you’re looking for a fun running goal for 2016, Mark Zuckerberg has you covered although you’ll have a little catching up to do first! Facebook’s founder and CEO created a fitness challenge for himself dubbed “A Year of Running.” The challenge is to run a total of 365 miles in 2016. The challenge is open to everyone and those who want to participate were invited to join a public group he created on Facebook. “It’s a mile a day, and at a moderate pace it’s less than 10 minutes of running per day,” Zuckerberg wrote in a post. At the time of writing this feature, the community has more than 110,000+ members. Unfortunately for Zuckerberg, some eagle-eyed viewers have criticized a recent running photo of the 31-year-old saying that he appears to be overstriding and striking the ground with his heel which have been called surefire ways to injure yourself. Better work on that form, Zuckerberg!

PIPPA MIDDLETON

The younger sister of Catherine Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, chose one of the toughest marathons in the world to knock off her bucket list in 2015. With temperatures rising to more than 86 degrees Fahrenheit at an altitude of 5,550 feet, the 2015 Safaricom Marathon in Kenya was no easy task. Fortunately the 26.2-mile race was no match for Middleton who placed 30th overall and was the seventh female finisher with a time of 3:56:33. Although the Safaricom Marathon was her first marathon, Middleton is an active runner and cyclist who regularly competes in various events. A week before Safaricom, Middleton rode 54 miles from London to Brighton to raise awareness for the British Heart Foundation. Less than three months later, Middleton completed the ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Championship in Sweden which involves a total of 6.1 miles of swimming and 40.3 miles of running. Middleton finished the race, a day after her 32nd birthday in 13:04:24. Way to go, Pippa!

KEVIN HART

Whenever actor and comedian Kevin Hart arrives in a new city, he literally hits the ground running with a 5K whether it’s a race or just the exercise. The 36-year-old also uses the activity as a creative way to connect with his fans. In 2014, Hart decided to see how many fans he could get to join him for an impromptu 5K run via social media. That first event drew two hundred people and now Hart regularly runs impromptu 5Ks with thousands of fans in various cities. “When I’m running, I’m not competing for a gold medal,” says Hart. “The reward is telling myself, ‘I’m staying consistent. I’m staying true to something.’ If I continue to set goals and accomplish those goals, that means I’m doing something right. Who knows where that could take me?” Best of all, Hart makes it a point to stay and high-five everybody at the end of the race even refusing to leave until the last person has crossed the finish line. How’s that for motivation?

Whether you love it or hate it, there’s no denying the health benefits of running. It’s good for the entire body and even helps to cleanse the mind, which is why so many people run to stay fit, including some of Hollywood’s hottest stars! For these celebs, getting away from the paparazzi isn’t the only reason to break into a sprint.

ANDREA BARBER

Andrea Barber, who played Kimmy Gibbler on the ’90s sitcom Full House, is a veteran full and half marathoner. In February she completed her fourth 26.2 mile marathon in Los Angeles, just 12 days before reprising her role as the Tanner family’s zany neighbor in Netflix’s reboot, Fuller House. The 39-year-old has two children and started running four years ago. She has since completed nearly 30 races and boasts a marathon personal record of 4:43. In an interview with Runner’s World, Barber said running is what keeps her sane and grounded, which means a lot considering she used to hate running and only began racing due to peer pressure! “I had some friends signing up for the Tinker Bell Half Marathon. It was almost sold out, and I decided I couldn’t miss out,” says Barber. “Something happened out there around mile nine where I felt the runner’s high for the first time. When I crossed the finish line I cried. I was changed. I signed up for my next race that night.”

GORDON RAMSAY

For Gordon Ramsay, dealing with subpar chefs is more of a nightmare than training for a marathon. The 49-year-old celebrity chef has been running for over a decade and competes in several long-distance races each year. Ramsay trains for these races year-round with his wife Tana who actually beat him to the finish line by 15 minutes in the 2012 London Marathon (Ramsay ran 4:26:21). The former soccer star has even ran a few double marathons in South Africa. According to an interview with BBC, Ramsay believes it’s crucial to cleanse the body for up to four days before a race. During the race, his biggest tip is to take a sip of water at every station. In 2015, Ramsay entered the grueling Ironman World Championship in Hawaii, but was forced to drop out during the final marathon leg due to vomiting and dehydration. Despite the unfortunate ending, Ramsay says he will be back this year! In 2013, Ramsay’s finished the Ironman race in 14 hours.

ELLIE GOULDING

British singer and songwriter Ellie Goulding is an avid runner and regularly runs five to six miles—even while on tour! Much like Kevin Hart, Goulding often invites fans to join her runs through her Facebook page. The “On My Mind” singer began running at 18 years old and never looked back. Now the 29-year-old credits music and fitness as being two of the most important things in her life and calls running a huge part of what keeps her motivated. “My training is part of my life. It’s something I need to do every day because it affects my mood, my fitness, even my mind-set onstage,” says Goulding. In 2013, Goulding ran an impressive 1:41:33 at the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in Washington D.C. and finished 362nd out of 15,000 runners. Goulding has since gone on to become a brand ambassador for Nike and even designed a 15 minute workout for Nike+ Training Club. Check out Goulding’s exercise tips and fashionable fitness looks at Nike.com!

NEWBEAUTY

INTRODUCING

THE BUGATTI CHIRON

TOYS

36

STYLETOME.COM

Bugatti is celebrating a world premiere at the Geneva International Motor Show: the French luxury brand is unveiling the Bugatti Chiron, the most powerful, fastest, most luxurious and most exclusive production super sports car in the world. The Chiron is the latest generation of the ultimate super sports car and is a completely new development. The sports car manufacturer from Molsheim, with its long tradition, has taken the unique features of a modern Bugatti to a new level and developed a high-performance machine that has become significantly better in every respect. With a power output of 1,500 HP, unprecedented for production vehicles, an exceptionally high torque value of 1,600 Nm between 2,000 and 6,000 rpm and a wide variety of technical innovations, the Chiron sets new standards in every respect. The Chiron is therefore very well-positioned to become the next world speed record holder and reach a maximum speed significantly above the record currently held by Bugatti. The manufacturer has limited the maximum speed of the new car to 420 km/h for road use. The Chiron is to be built at the company’s headquarters in Molsheim. Only 500 of these exceptional cars are to be produced. The basic price is €2.4 million net. Currently, advance orders have been received for one third of the total production run. The first vehicle is due to be delivered to a customer this autumn.

“It is part of human nature to cross boundaries and set new records – to run 100 m faster than ever before, to fly even further into space and to enter new realms. This striving is also our driving force at Bugatti,” said Wolfgang Dürheimer, President of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S., at the presentation of the Chiron. “The Chiron is the result of our efforts to make the best even better.”

With the Chiron, the Bugatti President said that Bugatti had left the dimensions which define the operations of all market players and had established new paradigms that had previously not existed. “Bugatti has tested the limits of physics. There is no area where we have not achieved significant improvements.“

The Bugatti Chiron is the world’s first super sports car to bring 1,500 HP onto the road with a torque of 1.600 Nm at 2,000 to 6,000 rpm with tremendous effectiveness, extremely high safety levels and unprecedented comfort.

This is the result of the legendary and unique eight-litre W16 engine that has been newly developed by Bugatti. In combination with the four new, larger turbochargers that are controlled by the Bugatti two-stage turbocharging, an innovation that Bugatti is introducing, and a large number of other technical refinements and innovations, maximum performance is available constantly and can be easily controlled at all speeds. In its Top Speed mode, the car reaches the maximum speed of 420 km/h, limited for road use – however, this is by no means the end of the road for the Bugatti Chiron.

With the new carbon fibre monocoque, a newly designed adaptive chassis, tyres developed especially for Bugatti and other innovative technologies, the Chiron is not only a champion in terms of maximum acceleration but is, for the first time, also an agile, modern Bugatti with handling that ensures maximum driving pleasure.

The design of the Chiron combines significantly more “beast” with a very high level of “beauty”. The design language introduced by Bugatti with the Chiron has a significantly more aggressive tone and does justice to the character of the new super sports car. The designers have succeeded in reinterpreting Bugatti’s DNA with its distinctive features in a modern manifestation at the same time as adding new features resulting from the technical demands of even higher performance. The Chiron remains unmistakably a Bugatti.

“The Chiron is the quintessential ultimate

super sports car: ultra-modern, incredibly fast, agile and powerful with a stylistically demanding design and the highest possible levels of comfort,” says Wolfgang Dürheimer. “This combination is not offered by any other market player and gives Bugatti its unique market position.”

“Our customers form an exclusive group of automobile collectors who are searching for the very best. With the Veyron, they have the best production sports car of the past 10 years,” Dürheimer continues. “This is why their demands and expectations for our next step – the Chiron – were so high.“

Customers’ reactions show that Bugatti has hit the mark. Advance orders have already been received for one third of the production series. “Those who have already considered Bugatti and its unique features in connection with the purchase of a Veyron will find there is no way they can ignore the Chiron,” according to Wolfgang Dürheimer.

“With the Chiron we will not only be providing a key emotional element for the image of the Volkswagen Group but will also be making a positive contribution to Group results,” says Wolfgang Dürheimer.

THE DESIGN OF THE CHIRON COMBINES SIGNIFICANTLY MORE “BEAST” WITH A VERY HIGH LEVEL OF “BEAUTY”.

WITH TIME AND

VR MAY BECOME

THE PREFERABLE

CHOICE TO ACTUAL

EVERYDAY REALITY.

STYLETOME.COM

Virtual reality is now just a cardboard device away? You heard that right, Google Cardboard created the first virtual reality, or VR, experience that simply pairs their headset device with a consumer’s mobile phone in order to bring thousands of applications to life in virtual 3D.

Launched in 2014, the original device design, constructed of low cost cardboard, uses 45mm focal length lenses to project stereoscopic “3D” images with a wide frame of view to consumers who use google cardboard compatible apps. These particular mobile applications split their virtual screens into two images, one for each lense, and working with distortion create the popular virtual experience. Now numerous other technology companies such as Google, Sony, Facebook and HTC have created variances of this virtual device and continue pioneering fresh developments. The technological race has begun among competing companies. Comparably all models are relatively low in cost and accessible to audiences who own an existing compatible smartphone and a model of the VR headset.

But does this technology come with probable concern? Now the nearest exotic escape or gaming experience is just within a headsets’ reach. Wherever the consumer is, mobile virtual reality is too. With time and advancement, VR may become the preferable choice to actual everyday reality. If that’s hard to imagine rewatch any virtual reality based film that has been popular entertainment to the public for their escapism and science-fiction narratives, it may not be too far off. Hours can be spent exploring the thousands of entertainment apps such as Cardboard Camera in which you can recreate a 3D depiction of a personal experience or photo and VRSE which immerses consumers into full 360 featured docu-stories and music videos. Travel the world with Google Street View and game with neon action on Proton Pulse. This new technology might not create monsters, but zombies. Not the famous flesh eating roamers but those who seem detached from the existing world they live in. “Zoning out” may take a new definition in good time.

On the flip side the possibilities for this platform are endless. New 3D compatible cameras and smartphones shooting high resolution photos and videos can serve as a life-like time capsule for sharing. Pop in a recording or photo and sit with loved ones reminiscing. Flashback to a childhood location with Google Street View’s timeline of captured footage by year. Same VR experience, same nostalgic accomplishment, same smartphone. Who wouldn’t want to enter their own personal time machine? Generations old and new can experience the past, present and future of global surrounding. As far as gaming goes, the use of Bluetooth technology pairs game controllers to the VR goggles for a completely all-in gaming venture. All other gaming experiences will seem inferior in comparison to this hands-on experience.

Virtual reality is on the rise and with constant advancement it is sure to soon take over the entertainment world. You might even spot a zombie or two!

We’re right in the middle of Spring 2016 and this beautiful season has brought with it an exciting, exclusive offer for a destination getaway like none you’ve ever experienced before. Now is the time to begin planning your spring vacation to one of Florida’s best kept secrets. If you’re reading this in the Sunshine State, then the good news is you’re halfway there! The next step is to pack your bags and book your reservation at South Seas Island Resort.

Along two-and-a-half miles of Captiva Island’s sugary white beaches and vibrant aqua waters is South Seas Island Resort. The 330-acre destination resort village and wildlife preserve is known for limitless opportunities for fun and relaxation. Now spring travelers

can take advantage of the resort’s “Spring Getaway” package which is available for travel from April 1st through June 30th. In addition to a fourth night free at the stunning resort, the unbeatable package also includes a resort coupon booklet with more than $250 in savings on resort outlets including beachfront golf, watersports, island cruises, spa services, dining, shopping and more. During my own recent getaway to South Seas Resort, my companion and I were struck by the carefree, yet intimate nature of such a large property. Guests greeted each other like old friends and staff went above and beyond to provide for anyone and everyone staying at the breath-taking resort. A complimentary trolley service provided access to the entire property, including the 9-Hole Executive Golf Course, Resort

Pool Complex, shell-laden Sunset Beach, bicycle and golf cart rentals, dining options and much more. Unlike your typical beach resorts, I didn’t feel like just another face in the crowd. Staying at South Seas was akin to living like a V.I.P in an exclusive community and the outstanding amenities will make you rightfully feel as such.

With its renowned location, the resort offers a destination rich in recreation and surrounding native wildlife. The resort boasts 471 accommodations ranging from guestrooms and suites, condominiums and private home rentals, all featuring balconies or lanais to enjoy water views and wildlife. My companion and I squealed in delight and reverted to the unabashed joy of a child at the sight of our first dolphin. Little did we know that we would continue to see literally dozens of these lovable creatures—even outside our bedroom window—over the course of our stay. The majority of our encounters occurred during our Dolphin & Wildlife Adventure Cruise, which was offered through

South Sea’s local cruise company Captiva Cruises. In addition to the Dolphin & Wildlife Adventure Cruise, springtime guests can also step aboard a Captiva Cruises vessel for an island shelling cruise, sailing cruise, group boat tour, private charter or a romantic sunset cruise and it doesn’t stop there! South Seas also offers other radical excursions such as guided kayak tours, boat charters for back-bay fishing, guided waverunner island tours and banana boat rides.

My companion and I soon learned that even little ones can get in on the South Seas fun with ScoutAbout. The resort’s popular scavenger hunt game gives children (and adults!) the chance to discover the landscape and wildlife of Captiva Island in search of fun facts about South Seas. Guests who collect all 15 Discovery Bands at various points of interest earn their spot on the ScoutAbout Wall of Fame. If you plan to travel with children, they are also sure to love the on-site Sanibel Sea School. The program offers field-based marine science courses where kids can

come face-to-face with local sea creatures, learn to surf or create fabulous crafts. As a complement to additional eco-friendly offerings at the school, South Seas also recently introduced a new Shelling Concierge. With more than 250 species of shells, Captiva Island has earned its reputation as one of the best spots in the world for shelling. With the new Shelling Concierge, collectors from all backgrounds can discover those species along the resort’s two-and-a-half miles of shell-laden beaches.

One of my favorite things about South Seas was the incredible variety of dining locations available and more importantly, that high-quality food was served at each of those locations. My companion and I went somewhere different and tried something new every day and we still never made it to every restaurant on property. Overlooking the Yacht Harbour and Marina, Harbourside Bar & Grill served both traditional breakfast fare and a dinner menu that showcased the bounty of Gulf seafood available. The Pointe,

located in the Resort Pool Complex, offered a selection of exquisite sandwiches, salads, burgers and vegetarian-friendly options. Fish Tacos with Grilled Mahi is a popular menu highlight and one bite was all it took for me to see why! The adorably quaint Scoops & Slices is a 1950’s themed diner serving a wide-selection of ice cream, pizza, and frozen yogurt. My companion and I reverted back to children for the second time at the mouth-watering sight of a floor-to-ceiling wall of candy which highlights the beloved diner. Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grill is an iconic Southwest Florida restaurant which brings Caribbean-inspired specialties to South Seas while Sunset Beach Bar is the perfect spot to see the unmatched sunsets of Southwest Florida over the blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

With everything from first-class food and superior guest rooms to unashamed fun and wild adventures, I didn’t see how our stay could get any better, but an incredible full body massage at Kay Casperson Spa &

Lifestyle Boutique proved me wrong. The treatment was enough to take me over that edge of bliss and ensure my return to the full-service spa during my next visit to South Seas. As my companion and I headed home and Captiva Island slowly disappeared in the rearview mirror, we candidly spoke of our phenomenal weekend. Each of us recalled our memories of the relaxation, fun and adventure that took place on this trip, which I knew we would remember forever. A resort photography studio set up on property also gave us the opportunity to remember our vacation forever with a beautiful seaside portrait on the same waverunners we had taken out for a thrilling ride just moments before. I urge you not to rob yourself of the opportunity to experience a new type of relaxation at this renowned vacation destination. The utilization of solar power can prove to be an extremely important and substantial contribution to the green-energy movement in our fair state. The benefits are obvious: generate energy without waste, pollution or dependence on the Earth’s natural resources; reduction of damaging fossil fuel emissions; easy to maintain; and reduction (or elimination) of those ever-increasing utility bills. This last benefit, of course, creates a bit of a problem for the investor-owned utility companies (“IOU’s”) that generate massive profits from natural gas and coal.

This “problem” creates a political climate, which pits the IOU’s against the green-energy programs that have been struggling to flourish. These green-energy programs should have flourished ages ago… we are, in fact, the Sunshine State, right?

On a national level, solar power is gaining momentum and starting to compete, economically, with coal and gas. The Obama administration has aided in the reduction of the price of solar panels, which are now 80% less than they were in 2009. In 2014 alone,

the United States collectively brought online as much solar energy every three weeks as it did in all of 2008, and the solar industry added jobs 10 times faster than the rest of the economy. Wondering why us residents aren’t feeling the solar energy growth in the State of Florida? It’s not just you. The Solar Energy Industries Association lists the “Top 10 Solar States in the Country” and Florida is nowhere on the list. That’s right – sadly, states such as Massachusetts and New York beat out Florida by a long shot. “It defies logic,” says former Florida Gov. Charlie

Crist. “It’s absolutely absurd.” This is predominantly due to failed legislative initiatives aimed at subsidizing the initial installation costs of solar panels, which runs approximately $10,000 to $15,000 – an expenditure that most Floridians cannot afford. IOUs have a direct interest preventing legislative reform, which would provide rebates, tax breaks and incentives to residents who shell out the initial cost for solar panel purchase and installation. And prevent legislative reform, they do.

Going back to basics, IOUs are governed by a board of directors and are state-regulated monopolies; they are for-profit corporations which serve the public. Capital is raised through stock sales, taxable bonds and through operating revenues. In order to protect their absolute monopolies and guaranteed revenues, these IOUs leverage their political power to box out the solar industry in Florida. Donations funneled to state political campaigns have kept pro-solar legislations from gaining traction in Tallahassee. “We in Florida are stuck in the stone age. This is probably the most byzantine energy legislation in the country,” said state Rep. Dwight Dudley, D-St. Petersburg, a supporter of the rooftop solar industry.

It’s no surprise that IOUs rely heavily on flexing their political muscle. Green energy is a massive disrupter to traditional electric utility business and poses a triple threat: As reported by the Rolling Stone, “First: When homeowners install their own solar panels, it means the utilities build fewer power plants, and investors miss out on a chance to profit. Second: Solar homes buy less electricity from the grid; utilities lose out on recurring profits from power sales. Third: Under “net metering” laws, most utilities have to pay rooftop solar producers for the excess power they feed onto the grid. In short, rooftop solar transforms a utility’s traditional consumers into business rivals.”

What’s more, these efforts are not only being stymied by IOUs – they are asking for approval to hike electric rates by more than 24% to consumers over the next three years. The solar industry is hitting back: a campaign entitled Smart Solar is collecting signatures to place Amendment 1 on the ballot (700,000 are needed to qualify): “Amendment 1 helps those who choose solar by allowing state and local governments to pass commonsense consumer protection regulations, designed to prevent fraud, abuse and overcharging. Non-solar customers who use traditional energy are protected by these regulations and we think solar customers should be protected, too.” Amendment 1 is just one of many efforts being made by all sides of the political camps to get Florida out of the stone age.

So, Floridians, in honor of Earth Day, let’s take a moment to reflect on how our political climate is affecting our environmental climate. Only two states have more solar power potential than Florida (California and Texas), yet, sadly, we rank 16th in the nation. Despite Florida’s struggles with solar power advancement, programs do exist, which can provide incentives for those who choose to go solar. When Lake Nona’s land was purchased by Joe Lewis, founder and owner of Tavistock Group, he is reported to have laid out a map and said, “this map is going to be the canvas on which we paint Lake Nona.” Decades later, that statement has become the inspiring story behind the name of Tavistock Restaurant’s first Central Florida location: Canvas Restaurant & Market. Located at the Laureate Park Village Center in Lake Nona, the dinner-only restaurant features exquisite, innovative American cuisine built around fresh Florida seafood. At the time of my visit, Canvas had only been opened for 24 short days. With this knowledge in mind, I would’ve been pleasantly surprised to see a couple dozen diners eating at the brand new establishment, but that wasn’t to be the case. On a quiet Wednesday evening, my sister and I were astonished to see a restaurant packed with individuals that had all come together for the shared experience of dining at Canvas. Diverse groups of families, friends and singles were seated throughout the busy restaurant, adding an exciting buzz of vibrant energy and life into the already welcoming atmosphere. To physically see Canvas blow up seemingly overnight in one of the fastest growing communities in America was truly remarkable.

“The reception has been amazing from Laureate Park and Lake Nona as a whole. We’ve got some people who are on their 13th visit already and we’ve only been open for 24 days.” -Aaron Ferg, Assistant GM

That kind of positive reception doesn’t happen on its own and it certainly doesn’t come without plenty of hard work. It takes an entire kitchen of talented cooks, a driven team of managers and an exceptional staff of dedicated servers. For us, that exceptional server came in the form of Daniel Hobson. As our server for the evening, Mr. Hobson was the living embodiment of all that you would hope for in a server at any dining establishment. Most importantly, his talents in top quality service were equally reflected in that of the entire Canvas Restaurant Team.

“I have regulars three to four times a week. I want guests to go home and still be thinking about how amazing the food was...I want them to try something that they wouldn’t find anywhere else...I want them to tell their friends about it and be excited about what we have to offer here. The biggest thing for me is just to get them to come back and have them dine here again.” -Daniel Hobson, Server

The menu at Canvas, which is strongly influenced by Florida’s Southern and Latin American roots, seeks to give guests ultimate flexibility in their dining experience with everything from large sharable appetizers to hearty entrees. Canvas’ stunning presentation of the food is equally impressive with Executive Chef Bryan Thoman’s brilliant use of vibrant colors that pop right off the plates and taste just as savory as they look. Both of us enjoyed tantalizing appetizers of calamari fries and corn Johnny Cakes that I know I will be raving about until the day I return to try them again. For the main course, I was blissfully taken away with the wood-oven roasted whole fish while she indulged in excellent pan-roasted Meyer lemon scallops. Other menu highlights included fried shrimp and oyster po boy, house-cured snapper ceviche, braised short ribs served with house-made ricotta cheese and staff favorite, the cured pork shank with collard greens, which takes three days to prepare.

“My hands down favorite is the pork shank. It falls off the bone with tons of flavor. It’s an amazing dish! I love it!” -Aaron Ferg, Assistant General Manager

“The collard greens is actually a recipe from a line cook that used to work for me. He taught

me how to make them and his grandmother has been making them for years. It’s literally three ingredients and they come out amazing. It means something to me too...on top of the pork shank being so complicated, the collard greens are so simple and that’s why I think they’re a beautiful marriage.” -Bryan Thoman, Executive Chef

Complementing the Canvas menu is the restaurant’s stunning interior and inviting decor. Floor-to-ceiling windows and waterfront dining provide guests with a welcoming space and gorgeous patio views of the setting sun. An open kitchen means you can watch the cooks in action and even interact with them as they prepare those mouth-watering meals. At the popular bar, Canvas bartenders craft a range of specialty cocktails integrating more than 50 of the world’s most innovative liquors and liqueurs. Canvas also features an adjacent market open daily for breakfast and lunch and a store where guests can peruse a hand-selected collection of housewares, books and local goods.

“I feel like Central Florida is starting to make strides in the food scene. I hope when people walk away they feel like Canvas is also making that imprint. First of all, we want to be the best restaurant in Laureate Park. Then we want to be the best restaurant in Lake Nona. Then we want to compete and be one of the best, if not the best in Orlando” -Executive Chef Thoman

Climbing to the top in Orlando is no easy feat, but with the quality of service and exceptional dining experience they offer, I believe that Canvas Restaurant & Market can proudly say that they got the “right recipe.”

A matcha

MADE IN HEAVENSPRING’S LATEST GREEN TEA TREND

by Courtney Caggiano

“It’s time to meet your new

match… or matcha.”

Page 65: Orlando Style Magazine April 2016

We know you love your coffee fix in the morning, but what if there was a better way to boost not just your energy, but your long-term health as well? Coffee definitely has its fine points, with its haunting aroma and caffeine for hours, but there’s so much more you could be doing for your body with your morning drink.

It’s time to meet your new match… or matcha. The new diet trend for spring is one for coffee drinkers and tea connoisseurs to take note of. This green tea is specially grown and processed into a powdered texture, rich to the brim with antioxidants called catechin polyphenols and a variety of health benefits, making your morning routine so much more than just a way to stay awake in those early meetings.

Unlike regular green tea, matcha is grown with two specific farming techniques that make it rise above the average leaf. The green

tea plants that are used for matcha are shade-grown for approximately three weeks before they are harvested. During the harvesting process, the stems and veins of the green tea leaves are removed. The shaded growth of the matcha produces more theanine and chlorophyll, and with higher contents of these, matcha is more effective in improvingmental focus. The theanine, when combined with caffeine, is said to offer energy boosts without the jittery side effects or a tendency to crash in the afternoon.

Also, because of matcha creative growth process, the tea allows the drinker to ingest all of the content of the leaves, rather than just certain parts. The powdering of the matcha works wonders by dissolving the tea in its entirety in water, thus resulting in the drinker getting all the good stuff that is often missed in an average glass of green tea.

But matcha is not just for a health boost in the morning. If you’ve had green tea-flavored

foods, you’ve probably already tasted this interesting leaf. Matcha is often used to flavor green tea ice cream, and to add a pop of natural color to Japanese treats like mochi and soba noodles.

And, if matcha wasn’t already elegant enough of a tea, you’ll be pleased to know that certain blends of matcha are given poetic names called “chamei”, or “tea names”. Matcha tea blends are named by their tea makers, and when a blend is named by a master of a tea ceremony, it becomes known as a “konomi”, or “favored blend”.

Matcha is already available at tea shops and coffeehouses around the country, and we’ll probably be seeing many more matcha variations in the near future. So, the next time you reach for your morning pick-me-up, consider a modern, healthy, exotic alternative that will have your body thanking you foryears to come.

This curious delight is completely edible with its candied lemon rind, homemade lemon sorbet, lemon curd and Chantilly cream. Add a nimble of shortbread cookie atop and you’ve found a perfectly refreshing indulgence. “The Lemon” is prepared and cut tableside, as a perfect after dinner treat.

Process & Ingredients: (1) One whole lemon cleaned out; rind of lemon cooked for 4 hours in a simple syrup reduction; filled with homemade lemon sorbet, lemon curd, and Chantilly cream

Why is it special?: It is prepared tableside – the server cuts into the lemon creating perfect individual bites and then tops each piece with a shortbread cookie.

Tara Moore is no stranger to the real estate spotlight. Last year, Tara was recognized as one of the National Association of Realtors’® (NAR) “30 Under 30” honorees for 2015. The “30 Under 30” program recognizes 30 rising young stars in the real estate industry – successful young Realtor professionals across the U.S. who exemplify ingenuity, dedication and leadership in their careers. Tara consistently ranks as one of the top producing agents in Central Florida, earning Gold Producer level awards each year from the Orlando Regional Realtor Association and numerous other awards, including the RE/MAX Chairman’s Award and RE/MAX Hall of Fame recognition for 2015, two of the highest level achievement awards within the entire company.

But to Tara, it isn’t the awards that make this business so sweet. It is the relationships she builds along the way and the opportunity to turn her clients into lifelong friends and “raving fans.” To date, Tara has received over one hundred five-star “RAVING”

online reviews from previous clients, and she is quick to tell anyone that she treasures those more than any plaque or trophy on a shelf in her office.

Having grown up in the real estate industry, Tara has a unique perspective on the real estate transaction. “I operate with a relational mindset. The transaction is part of our business, but I am constantly working to build a relationship that will result in trust and future referrals. I tell clients my goal for the transaction is that they’ve not only had a positive experience with my services but also become informed and knowledgeable real estate consumers. It’s my responsibility to promote knowledge of our industry among consumers. The greatest compliments I receive from clients are that I treat them like family — with honesty, care, and respect — and that I taught them about real estate.”

Aside from her career and real estate “family,” it is her true family that brings Tara the most joy. Tara enjoys traveling and

boating with her husband Matt, who is also a Realtor, and her two children, Grayson & Lainey June. “My career in real estate has afforded me an incredible opportunity to work hard at something that I truly enjoy, and it has also given me the means and time for a beautiful life with my family — and for that, I am forever grateful.”

MARTY NALDA DR. MARTY NALDA - ORLANDO’S 5 STAR REALTOR

A native of Pinar del Rio, Cuba, Dr. Marty Nalda and her family emigrated to South Florida in the 1980’s. Her original career as a Chiropractic Physician required her to have extensive practice hours that took her away from her family. After dabbling in real estate as an investor for a while, Marty decided to take the plunge and completely change career paths, and fully immerse herself in a real estate career.

Setting her apart from others in her profession are remarkable customer service, patience, and a true desire to serve the clients. “The best part of my job is that every day, every customer, every transaction, is different.” Marty says. “I strive to listen to what my clients want and need from me, and to help them navigate a course that most people find stressful and often frustrating.” Generally this can mean several conversations about the current market, options available, and helping the client focus their energy on finding the key elements that they desire in a home.

Marty credits a strong understanding of fast paced and changing market trends and strong negotiation skills with her success thus far. Excelling in both high-end transactions for doctors and executives as well as starter homes for first time homebuyers, she thrives on the variety and the challenge of helping her customers find the ideal home. She feels that there is no typical client base that she mostly caters to, and challenges herself to empathize with her clients, regardless of their situation. “Whether it’s a seller or a buyer, a first time home owner, or an investor, I dedicate myself wholeheartedly to providing an ultimately positive experience for my clients”.

Marty concentrates her real estate practice to Orange and North Osceola counties, although clients have taken her all over central Florida. She has watched the area grow exponentially since moving here in the late 1990’s. Educating her buyers and sellers about local trends, how to navigate smoothly through the transaction, and what to expect at every point is one of the standards of client management that she upholds for herself.

In her personal life, Marty is a mother of two wonderful teenage girls as well as several kids of the four legged variety. “Each day I wake up excited to see whom I can help. Past clients that might need help finding a repair person or decorator, new clients who would like to list or purchase a home…the phone rings and the possibilities are endless. I love spending my day helping people achieve their quest for their dream home!”

LINDA S. CAMP LINDA S. CAMP - ORLANDO’S 5 STAR REALTOR

‘Real estate is an increasingly complex industry’, Linda Camp can attest. She is a second generation real estate agent following in the footsteps of her parents who created fertile ground for her to grow her business. Linda is fueled by the challenge of getting the best deal in real estate for her clients which is why she takes every opportunity to study and stay current on market issues supporting her knowledge base and her successes. Her clients know, by the way she does business, she is with them every step to the way.

Being a 3rd generation native to Florida, Linda believes Orlando is simply an amazing place with so many great areas to live. From the Dr. Phillips to the Lake Mary/Heathrow area, some of the greatest places to live in Central Florida are right here. Linda makes it her priority to educate her clients on all of the rich social, economic, educational, and professional resources each part of the city has to offer.

In addition, Linda enjoys educating and helping clients see the potential of investing in real estate as an alternative to the traditional stock market trading. “Real estate is always tangible”. When the market crashes and you no longer see the same value on your investment statements, you can still reach out and touch your real estate. Property values may temporarily decline and you may have to adjust your rental return but values always manage to return and your rental income continues to flow.

Linda relies heavily on her understanding of cycles in real estate; beginning in 1979 following graduation from Barry University (Miami) with a degree in Business and attending the Masters program at Phoenix University, she has worked all aspects of the residential market from representing first time home buyers to investors.

Linda is a member of the National Association of Realtors, Florida Realtors and the Orlando Realtor Association, the Florida Manufactured Housing Association and is a Division Officer for the Field Communities Division. Interestingly, Linda overlapped her real estate career working for ATT/Lucent Technologies as a Financial Analyst for 20 years. She now volunteers as a certified Supreme Court Mediator handing mediation cases in Volusia County. She is a member of the Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce, overseeing the Leadership Program for 9 year running. And for fun, Linda enjoys riding her Harley Davidson motorcycle and hiking the North Carolina Mountains.

He will never talk. He will never have friends. He has AUTISM. Those are the words that forever change the lives of so many families.

What is Autism? It’s a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and is the result of a neurological disorder that affects the normal functioning of the brain, impacting development in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. Both children and adults with autism typically show difficulties in verbal and nonverbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities. Autism is a spectrum disorder and affects each individual differently and at varying degrees.

What are the characteristics of Autism? There can be a wide range of characteristics and every child/adult with autism do not have to exhibit every characteristic. Some of the more common signs are: resists changes in routine, severe language deficits, echolalia (repeating words), self stimulation, little or no eye contact, sustained odd play, and behavior outbursts.

How Many People Are Affected by Autism? Twenty years ago, the rate of autism was 1 out of 10,000 children. Today, the rate has increased to 1 out of 68 children. It currently affects more than 20,000 children right here in the Central Florida area.

The Autism Society of Greater Orlando (ASGO) was formed by a group of parents in the spring of 1996. This year, they celebrate the 20th Anniversary serving the needs of individuals with autism, their family

members, and the community. ASGO’s mission is that all individuals within the autism spectrum will be provided a lifetime network of opportunities to become fully accepted, included and actively participating members of our community, through family support, education, advocacy, and public awareness.

ASGO provides supports and services that include, but are not limited to, social skills groups for individuals with autism ages 2 thru adult, sibling activities and recognition events, Tribute to Special Moms, Father’s Day celebrations, holiday parties, Awareness Events including Autism Walk & Family Fun Day and Sea of Dreams Event at Sea World, Autism Awareness Training for Law Enforcement Officers and First Responders, Autism Awareness Training for hospitals, schools, and other community agencies, and more.

ASGO’s funding comes directly from donations from the general public and from Autism Walk & Family Fun Day scheduled for April 9, 2016 inside the Orange County Convention Center’s North Concourse from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM. 100% of the funds raised and donations received stay right here in our local community to support those living with autism today. To find out more about ASGO and how you can support those living with autism today, please visit: www.asgo.org or call 407-855-0235.

It is with great pleasure and extreme confidence that I recommend TLC Pediatric Therapy. I have known Doug Stafford and the staff of TLC both personally and professionally for almost ten years. Their dedication to the autism community cannot be understated. Professionally, TLC Pediatric Therapy representatives have collaborated with ASGO on events and activities including our Sea of Dreams event at Sea World, our Autism Walk & Family Fun Day inside the Orange County Convention Center, and our Adventures in Autism Event at the Nick Hotel. They not only volunteer to assist ASGO, but they interact throughout the events with individuals with autism. In addition, a representative of TLC has held a seat on the ASGO Board. She was my “go to” person when we were trying to plan games and activities to address the children’s lack of communication, sensory issues, and motor skill deficits, as it is always important for us to create activities/games that would help the individual with autism grow in their development. And finally, representatives of TLC are always the first to volunteer their time and expertise to grow programs that support those with autism. Professionally, there is no group of individuals that I would trust more with our kids then TLC Pediatric Therapy. Personally, TLC Pediatric Therapy representatives have provided direct services to my son, Andrew, a young man with moderate to severe autism with significant behavior issues. It was always a challenge to find therapists

willing to work him and his behaviors. TLC Pediatric Therapy was not only able to secure therapists that specialized in speech, occupational, and physical therapies, but the therapists themselves were incredibly skilled and patient throughout their time with him. Our son made significant progress through the well planned, well organized therapy sessions that took into account the need for constant movement and constant reinforcement. The therapists were a blessing to us and a huge source of support to Drew. He truly would not be where he is today without their hard work and dedication. During the past ten years, I have come to know Doug Stafford and staff of TLC Pediatric Therapy and have witnessed time and time again their engagement and support of those with autism. They are committed to insuring that every person is treated fairly and with respect. Any individual with autism would benefit greatly by the services and support of representatives from TLC Pediatric Therapy. I have no hesitation in recommending TLC Pediatric Therapy. HEALTH & BEAUTY

ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

Finding the spring air a little harder to breathe in these days? Instead of checking into your nearest physician’s office for a script from the doctor, try an alternative this April.

Halotherapy is an all natural holistic approach that has been displaying its health benefits since the mid-19th century. With its ability to alleviate respiratory, skin and immune system conditions at a relatively low cost, this authentic relaxing treatment has found popularity with celebrities and the general public alike. Following extensive research and evaluation in Europe, “the Russian Ministry of Public Health sanctioned Halotherapy / Dry Salt Aerosol Therapy as valid medical treatment” in 1990 and shortly after the innovative therapy spread. “In early 2000, Halotherapy was introduced into the Health Spa sector and spread rapidly in Europe and North America.”

New salt spas across the world have recreated the benefit of natural salt caves by lining the interior treatment rooms with pink or white Himalayan salt deposits and blowing an airstream of fine sodium chloride particles into the space using a halogenerator. The natural disinfectant of salt draws out and combats bacteria in the body by expelling the contributors of illness at a controlled rate. With the comfort of the spa rooms kept

between 68-73 degrees Fahrenheit and the use of light and sound additions, patients are able to escape to solace in 15-50 minute sessions. While breathing in the powerful substance most patrons read, catch up on a much needed nap or enjoy a massage, available in some facilities, during their salt sessions.

Halotherapy is not only found on land but now at sea as it has become a standard for European luxury cruise line companies such as MSC Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line. Passengers can enjoy spa salt therapy whilst aboard their ships and traveling abroad. What better way to combat potential travel ailments?

The beauty of this treatment welcomes all ages who wish to indulge in this alternative, complementary, and natural medical practice. From small children to the elderly, clients can find a wide range of help. Some seek routine detox and immune boost effects, or treatment for allergies, sinusitis and skin conditions such as psoriasis and acne. While this is not a cure, or to treat medical conditions, halotherapy is used as an additive treatment to assist in controlling patients’ varying symptoms.

The Salt Scene Orlando, under the supervi-sion of Dr. Rupal Thakkar, chooses to use

rare white Himalayan salt found deep in the mines of Asia along with pharmaceutical/medical grade sodium chloride, to treat a wide range of patients. Similar to spa choic-es locally, different room experiences can be chosen from when selecting the desired treatment experience.

Halotherapy is cautioned to be avoided by doctors during the acute or contagious phase of any illness, including severe colds and flus, infections, cardiac deficiency, high blood pressure, substance intoxication or uncontrolled hypertension.

Maybe this naturally trending experience is the solution you need in your life this spring and summer. As always, consult a doctor before taking a dip in this salt pool.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAWSpecial Promotional Feature

The founding fathers of this country, when drafting the Constitution of the United States, required that ten amendments be included in the Constitution. The Fifth Amendment contains many rights designed to protect individuals from governmental abuses which the colonies had suffered prior to the Revolutionary war. One of the important guarantees in the Fifth Amendment is the right against self incrimination.

Many believe that if a person invokes their Fifth Amendment right and refuses to speak with law enforcement that such a person must be guilty. This is simply not correct.

The drafters of the Constitution were aware of harsh tactics to force a confession including torture, and other forms of abuse. The Supreme Court of the United States, has on more than one occasion, written that the Fifth Amendment’s right against self incrimination is to protect the innocent who may otherwise be ensnarled by ambiguous circumstances and complex laws.

Today’s federal and state criminal laws go far beyond the crimes that were present in America upon its independence. Violation of complex laws and government regulations can result in criminal charges even if the person did not intend to commit a crime. The right to remain silent and not talk with criminal investigators is especially important due to the complexities of the criminal laws.

Speaking with law enforcement officers conducting an investigation entails certain risks that may cause individuals to be charged with a crime even if they are innocent. Some of these risks include: 1) Law enforcement officers may misunderstand the statements

given. 2) The individual, when answering a question, may in good faith make a mistake due to incorrect memory or misunderstanding of the question. 3) The investigator may incorrectly recount the statements of the person interviewed when later preparing a written report. 4) While not often the case, an officer may intentionally lie concerning a statement. If any of these risks materialized as a result of an interview, the chances of an arrest and the filing of a criminal case goes up.

Many people are surprised to learn that federal law enforcement officers do not routinely record interviews. The end result of this failure to record an interview is that at trial the jury is presented with the investigators interpretation of what the citizen said rather than what was actually said.

A person’s physical and mental condition at the time of an interview may also have an impact on whether the information provided is correct. Recent studies have concluded that false confessions are more likely from a person who has not had sufficient sleep for extended periods. Over the past few years, there have been several reported cases of convictions resulting from false confessions.

The right to remain silent and invoke one’s privilege against self incrimination is no less important today than when the United States Constitution was drafted. As citizens we should realize that the Fifth Amendment’s provision “nor shall (any person) be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself ” is to protect the innocent and its invocation should not be accompanied by a presumption of guilt.

BEST FRIENDS

Dogs are more than just best friends; they are often the only source of necessary assistance for people in need of physical aid. Canine Companions for Independence is a non-profit organization that sees the requirement for service dogs and provides others with furry friends to help get them through their everyday experiences.

For those of us who cannot imagine living with a disability, the Canine Companions for Independence allows us to understand the beautiful relationships people with daily difficulties can receive from a Canine Companion. Since 1975, CCI has bred and prepared highly-

trained assistance dogs to be partnered with people with a variety of disabilities. Based in Santa Rosa, California, this organization is the largest nonprofit provider of support dogs and is praised for the standard of excellence to which it holds its breeding and training.

The secret behind CCI’s success is its dedication to not only providing necessary support for the disabled, but also long, quality relationships between dogs and people. With CCI, people are given the life-changing opportunity to develop independence through a partnership with an assistant animal.

CCI’s breeding program is focused on using the most advanced technology, with attention to detail in the selection process. Volunteers who serve as breeder caretakers provide homes for the dogs involved in the breeding, and they help whelp the puppies and keep them in a loving environment until their return at eight weeks of age to the Santa Rosa headquarters.

At this age, the puppies are adopted by puppy raisers, people around the country who volunteer their time and their hearts to care for the puppies and raise them according to CCI’s training standards of socialization and obedience. Around the age of 15-18 months, the puppies return to one of the five CCI Regional Training Centers for six months of preparation before they are ready to serve as support animals.

CCI trains four different types of assistance dogs who are able to perform over 40 commands. They offer Service Dogs, Skilled Companions, Hearing Dogs, and Facility Dogs. Once they are trained, each dog is partnered with a graduate for a two-week training period called Team Training.

On February 12 of this year, CCI’s Team Training Graduation and Puppy Matriculation Ceremony took place at Universal Studios right here in Orlando. This was an exciting time for dog lovers to gather together to honor those graduating from the program and to meet others who are passionate about providing support to those in need.

Every support dog at CCI is provided absolutely free, thanks to kind contributors. If you would like to participate in CCI’s noble initiative, or if you would like to contribute, visit www.CCI.org.
