Experience rail travel at its very best on the British Pullman and Northern Belle.

Few experiences can compare to a journey on the British Pullman or Northern Belle, sister trains to the renowned Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. Royalty, film stars and heads of state were transported in luxury on these “palaces on wheels” back in the 1920s and 30s, and that Golden Age of Travel has been recreated in all its glory for you to enjoy

today. Stepping onboard is like stepping back in time, to an age when train travel was the epitome of sophistication.

Much remains the same as it was then – the exquisitely appointed carriages, the liveried stewards, the sumptuous black-tie dinners – but our journeys are as much a celebration of the present as they are of the past and are a great excuse to dress up and have fun. Glide through stunning scenery to exciting destinations all over Britain, dining on lovingly prepared cuisine paired with the finest wines.

The British Pullman train embodies everything that was fabulous about the roaring 1920s and 1930s. In their heyday, the carriages formed part of the most famous and luxurious services in Britain – The Bournemouth Belle, The Brighton Belle, The Queen of Scots and The Golden Arrow. Today, each carriage has been lovingly restored and refurbished, so that you too can experience the glamour of vintage rail travel.

Each of the 11 individual carriages has its own name, décor and history. No journey is complete without taking a stroll through the train, admiring the unique flourishes that make the British Pullman truly one of a kind: veneered panels, decorated with exquisite Art Deco marquetry; plush and roomy armchairs; tables set with linen, silver, crystal and blush-pink lamps; the brass luggage racks that gleam overhead.

The British Pullman might be an homage to days gone by, but the cuisine is resolutely contemporary, with seasonally changing menus created by our Executive Head Chef and

team. Then, of course, there’s the scenery. Whether you’re heading off to a sporting event, a day trip, historic site or a weekend break, look out of the window, as castles, stately homes, cathedrals and landmarks pass you by. Marvel at the beauty of Britain’s countryside – a magical backdrop to your journey.

Step onboard and you’re immediately transported back to the glamorous 1930s, when beautifully appointed “Belle” trains – the inspiration behind the Northern Belle – traversed the country in unrivalled comfort and style.

The carriages evoke the golden age of travel in all its glory – inside and out. From the handpainted and signwritten exterior to the luxuriously furnished interior, no detail has been overlooked. Walk through the train and you’ll discover magnificent floor mosaics, gleaming brassware and stylish ceiling murals. Most impressive, however, is the ornate veneered marquetry lining the walls, hand-crafted using methods that have scarcely changed for centuries and inspired by the great British castles and stately homes after which the carriages are named.

Celebrations and fabulous food go hand in hand. Our Executive Head Chef and team take great pride in their seasonally changing menus, which come with a dash of

flavour from the regions the train visits on its journeys. Despite its name, the Northern Belle doesn’t travel solely around the north of England. It departs from over 60 regional stations across the UK, on day trips and weekend breaks to some of Britain’s best-loved destinations.

The exPerienCe

You’ve booked your journey and the excitement is mounting. You know where the train is taking you. Now read on to discover the wonderful experiences that await you onboard.

The anticipation is over. The day has arrived. As you stroll through the station, you catch a glimpse of the beautifully restored train. A liveried steward is there to welcome you before escorting you to your seat.

As you sit back in your armchair, you drink in the sumptuousness of your surrounds. Everything demands to be touched, from the polished marquetry to the snowy table linen.

The spectacular wood panelling onboardhas been created in the workshop by the family run British company, A Dunn & Son, who decorated the original Pullman carriages in the 1920s – and still works with us today using the same tools, materials and methods that have beenpassed down through generations.

What you do first is up to you. Walk the length of the train or do nothing more than settle back into your armchair and await the arrival of your steward with a chilled Bellini to get your journey off to a celebratory start.

Sipping on your drink, your mind wanders to the menu in front of you.

Prepared fresh each day using the best of British produce, dining onboard is a feast for the senses. One thing is for sure: the getting there will be every bit as exciting as the destination itself.

Fun For All The FAmily

Gather all the generations together for a family day out onboard and create memories to last a lifetime.

ONLINE JOURNEY PLANNER orienT-exPress.Com/uKTrAins

There are no age restrictions when it comes to enjoying a day out onboard. In fact, quite the opposite – many of our trips visit destinations the whole family will love, including Longleat Safari Park and the National Rail Museum in York.

We know how important it is to take time out from our day-to-day lives to spend with those closest to us, so why not treat your loved ones to a day out on one of our trains?

Six of our journeys have been specially tailored to families so that all the generations can enjoy a day out together.

Rail enthusiasts will love the National Rail Museum in York or a trip on the Ffestiniog Steam Railway, through Snowdonia National Park. There are rare and beautiful animals at Edinburgh and Chester Zoo, and it’s all aboard the mighty Brunel’s ss Great Britain in Bristol. Or try something altogether more adventurous and descend into the Llechwedd Slate Caverns in Wales on a deep-mine experience.

Harry Potter fans will be delighted to embark on a magical adventure to the studios where the filming first began. For more details please see page 9. Worried about noise? Don’t be. On the Northern Belle we have a designated “Family Carriage”, where a special children’s menu, with unlimited drinks, is served. To keep younger passengers entertained, we have a selection of traditional games, Nintendo DS consoles and portable DVD players (with headphones). On the British Pullman, our private coupé compartments, for four people, are perfect for the family to enjoy.

A Golden oPPorTuniTy

A rare opportunity for steam enthusiasts to gain exclusive behind-the-scenes access to the vintage steam engine that will haul the British Pullman before it sets off on its journey.

ONLINE JOURNEY PLANNER orienT-exPress.Com/uKTrAins

The sounds and smells of steam evoke special memories for rail enthusiasts. This year we are offering guests a unique opportunity to go behind the scenes before the Steam Locomotive sets off on its steam-hauled Golden Age of Travel journey. Pay a visit to the locomotive shed and watch as the steam support crew carries out its final preparations for the trip ahead. Take the opportunity to chat to the driver and onboard team before waving the locomotive off on its way, after which you will transfer by car to London Victoria Station to take your place on the train.

Most of our steam-hauled trips are headed by 35028 Clan Line, one of the famous Merchant Navy Class locomotives built in 1948 by Southern Railway. Designed by Chief Mechanical Engineer, Oliver Bulleid, 35028 worked on the prestigious Golden Arrow, the Night Ferry, the Bournemouth Belle and the Atlantic Coast Express. After her career with British Rail, as it was then known, came to an end in 1967, she was bought by the Merchant Navy Preservation Society, which has

kept 35028 Clan Line in continuous service ever since.

This unique experience can be purchased at a supplement of £500 and is limited to a maximum of two passengers per departure. Available only in conjunction with our steam-hauledGolden Age of Travel journey with the British Pullman. Please book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Sunday is a day for the family to come together to relax and enjoy each other’s company, a tradition that dates back to the Industrial Revolution, when households would leave a cut of meat in the oven before going to church, returning to find a crisp, succulent joint for Sunday lunch. Times may have changed, but the tradition remains.

So why not leave the cooking to us and enjoy Sundays as they were meant to be onboard the Northern Belle? As the train sets off on a scenic round trip through the countryside, sit down to a traditional Sunday lunch with a modern twist, including a glass of champagne and half a bottle of wine. With strolling musicians and a table musician to entertain you on the way, it’s a day out the whole family will love.

CANTERBURYDominated by its spectacular Norman cathedral, parts of this charming riverside city are a UNESCO World Heritage site thanks to its many historic landmarks, including the Roman city wall, St Augustine’s Abbey ruins and the oldest Franciscan Friary in England. Enjoy a guided walking tour of Canterbury, including the world-famous cathedral, which became a place of religious pilgrimage after Thomas Becket was murdered there in 1170, inspiring Chaucer to write his unfinished masterpiece, The Canterbury Tales.

Alternatively, stroll the city in your own time before your coach transfer to Folkestone, where you will rejoin the British Pullman for afternoon tea on your return journey.

FOLKESTONESplendid views over the Channel greet you on your arrival into Folkestone, a popular seaside resort that dates back to the Victorian era. Today, the town is a thriving tourist destination, thanks to its sandy beach, coastal walks, public art trails and newly regenerated seafront: the pine-tree-shaded Coastal Park and The Leas, a beautiful cliff-top promenade designed in the mid-1800s. On your arrival into Folkestone, a

coach transfers you directly to The Leas, where you will have time to take in the sea air before your return journey on the British Pullman, when afternoon tea is served.
