River Cats handed a rain-shortened defeat in Tacoma

Walks put River Cats down early, rain comes in late to finish the game

A rainy evening in the northwest saw a flurry of walks give the Tacoma Rainiers (11-8) a rain-shortened

victory over the Sacramento River Cats (7-13) by a score of 4-0. A rough second inning doomed the River

Cats before the rain moved in after five innings to make the game official.

Romero got through the first inning unscathed, but in the second, he lost his release point and began

walking people. The Rainiers stayed patient and ended up scoring 4 times on just one hit. Romero was

relieved by Matt Reynolds, who settled things down and kept Sacramento in the game. Ryan Webb also

pitched in with a scoreless inning.

Tacoma starter Christian Bergman was fantastic in this one, pitching all five innings, allowing just two

hits, walking none, and striking out six River Cats. The right-hander picked up the win to move to 4-0 on

the season.

The only offense came in the form of singles from Austin Slater and Ryder Jones. The River Cats hitters

were kept off balance throughout the five innings by Bergman, who consistently forced weak contact.

The River Cats will be back at it again for game two tomorrow night, as they send right-hander Dan

Slania (0-2, 7.36) to the mound to face Tacoma. The Rainiers will counter with RHP Sam Gaviglio (0-3,

3.66). First pitch is set for 7:05 pm (PT) and the game can be heard live online at rivercats.com and on

the air on ESPN 1320.

Postgame Notes

Rain, Rain, Go Away: This is the third time in six meetings between the Rainiers and the River Cats that

rain has played a role…The two teams had their Opening Day matchup in Sacramento postponed due to

rain, while game two of the 2017 season was suspended in the first inning, also due to rain.

Wet Blanket Offense: The River Cats managed just two hits in tonight's game: singles by Slater and

Jones…Sacramento batters struck out in six of the 17 plate appearances on Thursday…In a five inning,

rain-shortened game, the River Cats struggled to get any momentum.

Free Pass Problems: River Cats pitchers walked five Rainiers hitters in the first two innings…Romero

walked five of the 11 batters he faced while throwing just 23 of his 47 pitches for strikes…The veteran

lefty has now walked a total of 16 batters in just 14.2 innings.

ABOUT JEQUAN LEWIS

An All-Atlantic 10 First Team selection in 2017, Lewis closed his VCU career among the school's career

leaders in points, assists, steals and 3-pointers. The Dickson County, Tennessee native ranks 16th in

school history in points with 1,444 and led the Rams in scoring as a senior in 2016-17. Lewis led the

Giants Rally Late, Avoid Sweep With 5-2 Victory

Four-run seventh inning propels San Jose to comeback win

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA - The San Jose Giants salvaged the final game of their four-game series in

Rancho Cucamonga with a come-from-behind 5-2 victory over the Quakes on Thursday evening at

LoanMart Field. The Giants (10-11) overcame a late 2-0 deficit scoring four times in the top of the

seventh to take the lead en route to securing the win.

Jonah Arenado (2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI) had two hits, including a game-tying two-run double in the seventh,

to lead the San Jose offensive attack. Matt Winn (2-for-4, HR, RBI) added a late solo home run as part of

a two-hit game.

Conner Menez (2-0) struck out a career-high 10 batters over six innings with just two runs allowed to

pick-up the win. The left-hander surrendered four hits, walked three and retired the final seven batters

he faced. David Owen (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO), Dusten Knight (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO) and Ryan

Halstead (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO) each threw a scoreless inning of relief to seal the victory. Halstead

notched his third save of the year.

Trailing 2-0, the Giants' decisive seventh-inning rally began with a single from Gio Brusa. Dillon Dobson

followed with a line drive single to right before Matt Winn lined a single to left to load the bases with

none out. Arenado then stepped to the plate and laced a double into the left center field gap. The hit -

San Jose's fourth in a row to start the inning - plated Brusa and Dobson to tie the game 2-2.

With runners at second and third, Jose Vizcaino Jr. was up next, but he grounded out to third for the first

out of the inning. Michael Bernal then hit a grounder to shortstop that was mishandled by Drew Jackson

for an error. Bernal was credited with an RBI on the play as Winn scored to give the Giants a 3-2 lead.

Daniel Carbonell then hit a bouncer to second that was fielded by Zach McKinstry, who recorded the

force out of Bernal at second. However, McKinistry, in an attempt to complete an inning-ending double

play, threw wildly to first. Rancho Cucamonga's second error of the inning allowed Arenado to score

pushing the San Jose lead to 4-2.

Owen then entered from the bullpen to begin the bottom of the seventh, but ran into trouble as

McKinistry led off with a single before a one-out walk to Jackson put runners on first and second. Owen

though escaped inducing Will Smith to pop out to third before DJ Peters grounded out to shortstop.

In the bottom of the eighth, Knight issued a two-out walk, but recovered to strikeout Ibandel Isabel on

three pitches to end the inning.

Winn then stretched the Giants lead to 5-2 when he blasted a solo home run to left in the top of the

ninth. The homer was Winn's first of the season.

Halstead closed out the game with a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth. The San Jose closer registered

consecutive strikeouts of McKinistry and Brandon Montgomery to start the inning before Jackson

grounded out to shortstop for the final out.

Tony Gonsolin (1-1) was saddled with the loss out of the Quakes bullpen after he was charged with all

four runs (three earned) in the top of the seventh.

Rancho Cucamonga built a 2-0 lead in the contest with single runs in the third and fourth innings against

Menez. In the bottom of the third, Jackson doubled with one out and then scored on Peters' two-out

double into the right center field gap. An inning later, Logan Landon drew a leadoff walk, stole second

and scored on Montgomery's two-out single to left.

The two runs allowed though were the only blemishes against Menez. The Giants starter struck out the

side in a scoreless bottom of the first before collecting another punchout in the second. Menez then

didn't allow another baserunner after Montgomery's hit in the fourth. He tossed a 1-2-3 fifth inning and

then struck out two more in a perfect bottom of the sixth to complete his outing.

Yadier Alvarez started on the mound for the Quakes and tossed four scoreless innings with just two hits

allowed. Alvarez walked one and struck out seven. Gonsolin then worked perfect fifth and sixth innings

to maintain Rancho Cucamonga's lead before San Jose rallied in the seventh.

Notes

San Jose snapped a season-high tying three-game losing streak.

The Giants finished their seven-game road trip with a 3-4 record.

Giants on Wednesday from Richmond (AA).

San Jose out-hit Rancho Cucamonga 9-5.

Rancho Cucamonga's six-game winning streak overall.

Alvarez is rated the #2 prospect (#1 pitcher) in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization according

to MLB.com.

Menez's 10 strikeouts are the most by a Giants pitcher in a game this season (previous-high: six

strikeouts). His previous career-high in strikeouts was eight (August 26, 2016 with San Jose).

Brusa (2-for-4) also finished with a multi-hit game for the Giants.

Dobson was activated from the disabled list before the game on Thursday. Outfielder Christoph

Bono was placed on the 7-day DL.

Drive Offense Explodes on GreenJackets

Good Start Not Enough for GreenJackets in Loss

Augusta, GA-The Greenville Drive were able to overcome a slow start Thursday night on their way to an

8-5 victory over the Augusta GreenJackets at Lake Olmstead Stadium. The loss for the GreenJackets

snapped a three game winning streak as they fell to 9-12 on the season.

The GreenJackets jumped on top early on when Ashford Fulmer came in to score by way of a throwing

error on a pick off attempt by Drive starting pitcher Darwinzon Hernandez. Fulmer's run made it 1-0

GreenJackets in the first. He led off the inning with a double and then stole third to set up the score.

Fulmer led off again in the third and was hit by the pitch. With two outs and the bases loaded, a

throwing error by Drive shortstop Santiago Espinal allowed both him and Jacob Heyward to score and

advanced Manuel Geraldo from first to third. Geraldo stole home giving the GreenJackets a 4-0 lead.

With two on and two outs in the top of the fourth, Nick Lovullo hit a three run home run off of

GreenJackets starter Matt Solter to cut the lead to 4-3. Solter was dynamite in five and a third innings

pitched. He struck out four and gave up four hits. He did not allow any runs outside of Lovullo's home

run.

With one out and nobody on in the sixth, Alex Bostic came on in relief of Solter. He walked the bases

loaded and then gave up a game tying single to Lorenzo Cedrola. He was then relieved by Cameron

Avila-Leeper. Espinal greeted Leeper with a sacrifice fly to put the Drive ahead for good.

The GreenJackets will be back in action Friday night for game two of their four game series with the

Drive. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM with the gates opening at 6:00. It is the third Reading Program
