Critical Thinking: Personnel Decisions (75 points) Choose one of the following two assignments to complete this week. Do not do both assignments. Identify your assignment choice in the title of your submission. Option #1: Personnel Decisions Paper This week you will have completed the first eight rounds of your simulation for the CleanStart company. (See this week’s Portfolio Project milestone that directs you to complete four more rounds. You completed the first four rounds last week, in Module 2.) This means that you now have two years of data on your company. Some of the decisions that you have made regard personnel (such as hiring or SAMPLE

letting go of employees) and determining their salaries and benefits. These are often executive-level decisions in an organization. For this assignment, write a paper in which you do the following: 1. Analyze the importance of making appropriate personnel decisions as an executive, including how to ensure you are hiring the right person for each position. 2. Evaluate your personnel strategy from the first eight rounds of your simulation to determine whether your decisions regarding positions to hire, number of people to hire, and salaries and benefits were beneficial for the company. Make sure to include actual data from the eight rounds of the simulation in your evaluation. What could you do differently to maximize your personnel decisions? Your paper should be 3-5 pages in length and conform to the CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA. Cite at least two scholarly references in addition to the course textbook. Discussion (25 points)

Critical Thinking: Change Implementation (75 points)

Choose one of the following two assignments to complete this week. Do not do both assignments. Identify your assignment choice in the title of your submission.

Option #1: Change Implementation Paper

As your company has continued from startup to year three, you have likely made some changes to all aspects of the organization. In a simulation it is relatively easy to make a change, because you select what you want to do and then it happens. In an actual organization, however, these changes take time; they are not easy to implement; and they affect people who might ultimately resist the change.

For this assignment:

1. Choose three KEY changes that you have made throughout the eight simulation rounds.

2. Evaluate these changes in a paper in terms of their impact on the overall finances of the organization. If this were an actual organization, who would have been involved in or impacted by these changes, and how?

3. Explain how you would go about communicating and implementing these changes if this were an actual organization and you were an executive leader. What potential resistance could you foresee, and how would you handle that resistance?

Your paper should be 3-5 pages in length and conform to the CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA. Cite at least two scholarly references in addition to the course textbook. The CSU-Global Library is a good place to find these resources.

Option #2: Change Implementation Presentation

1. Choose three KEY changes that you have made throughout the eight simulation rounds. In a slide presentation that incorporates audio or video, explain these changes to the Board of Directors. Using audio/video is your opportunity to practice and demonstrate the important leadership skill of oral presentation, which is a skill preferred by employers.

2. What changes did you make, and what impact did they have on the overall finances of the organization? Assume this is an actual organization, and discuss who was involved with or impacted by these changes, and how. How did you implement and communicate these changes as an executive leader, and how did you handle resistance to the changes?

Your presentation should include 5-7 slides, include audio or video, and conform to the CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA. Review the Library’s tips on Visual Presentations at http://csuglobal.libguides.com/CommonWritingAssign/vispresent.

Cite at least two scholarly references in addition to the course textbook. The CSU-Global Library is a good place to find these resources.

Portfolio Milestone (20 points)

Choose one of the following two assignments to complete this week. Do not do both assignments. Identify your assignment choice in the title of your submission.

Option #1: Submit Synopsis

Review your eight rounds of data from the simulation exercise, and submit a 1-page synopsis of your company’s position based on the eight rounds. This synopsis should talk about your decisions and where your company stands in terms of stakeholders, employees, finances, strategy, and market share. Based on your company’s current financial position, determine if you will use this set of rounds for your Portfolio Project, or if you will restart the simulation. Review the grading rubric for this Milestone in the Module 4 folder.

Option #2: Submit Synopsis

Review your eight rounds of data from the simulation exercise, and submit a 1-page synopsis of your company’s position based on the eight rounds. This synopsis should talk about your decisions and where your company stands in terms of stakeholders, employees, finances, strategy, and market share. Based on your company’s current financial position, determine if you will use this set of rounds for your Portfolio Project, or if you will restart the simulation. Review the grading rubric for this Milestone in the Module 4 folder.

Option #1: Global Culture Paper

Assume that the CleanStart organization (simulation) is a global company (as opposed to operating only domestically) operating in at LEAST one other country (you choose the country). It is your job as an executive-level leader to ensure that the organization has a global culture and that global thinking is a part of all decisions and daily activities within the organization.

Write a formal document that addresses all staff and that helps to establish this global culture, while defining the expectations that executive leadership has for all employees and managers regarding global thinking within the organization’s domestic and international locations. Make sure to consider the culture of the international location and how to best maintain positive relationships, given the similarities and differences between that culture and that of the United States.

There will be several Portfolio Project Milestone assignments in the course reminding you to complete the simulation rounds. SAMPLE

Page 12: ORG550: DECISION MAKING AND LEADERSHIP SAMPLE

In this simulation, you will make decisions that affect the overall “health” of the company. You will complete eight total rounds of the simulation (each round is equivalent to one quarter). When you are done with the rounds, you will have been in business for two years. Your company is currently in a decent financial position. You feel that with all of the changes and growth that have taken place within the company in its first two years of operations, it is time to come up with a solid strategic plan for the next five years, based on the data that you have from the first two years of operations. You meet with your executive leadership and together come up with a formal strategic plan for the next five years. This plan will include strategies for:

• Sales • Product R&D • Acquiring Key Personnel • Competition • Social Responsibility • External Investors and Stakeholders • IPO (if this is a direction in which you went or want to go) • Entrepreneurship • Potential for Global Expansion (if applicable) • Leading Organizational Change/Innovation • Developing Mid-level Leaders for Executive Positions • Projected Culture of the Organization

Your paper should be 8-10 pages in length and conform to the CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA. Cite at least three scholarly references in addition to the course textbook. The CSU-Global Library is a good place to find these resources. You and your team must present your ideas to potential investors (both domestic and international), who might help you with financing this expansion. In this presentation, you will need to discuss your strategies for the next five years, both domestically and internationally, as they relate to the following:

• Sales • Product R&D SAMPLE

• Acquiring Key Personnel • Competition • Social Responsibility • External Investors and Stakeholders • IPO (if this is a direction in which you went or want to go) • Entrepreneurship • Leading Organizational Change/Innovation • Developing Mid-level Leaders for Executive Positions • Projected Culture of the Organization

Your presentation should include 15-18 slides, include either audio or video, and conform to the CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA. Review the Library’s tips on Visual Presentations at http://csuglobal.libguides.com/CommonWritingAssign/vispresent. The option to use audio/video is your opportunity to practice and demonstrate the important leadership skill of oral presentation, which is a skill preferred by employers. Cite at least three scholarly references in addition to the course textbook. The CSU-Global Library is a good place to find these resources.
