Spirit of God, You moved over the waters Whisp’ring God’s love to the whole of creation. You breathe Your life into God’s sons and daughters, Giving us talents and Your inspiration.

Spirit of God, by the prophets You sought us, calling us back from our pride-filled behavior. Through chosen leaders You reached us and taught us; By Your own gift we were given a Savior.

Spirit of God, like a dove You once rested, Showing God’s joy on the day christ was baptized. You sent christ out to the hills to be tested, Through You, He called us to see God with new eyes.

Spirit of God, like a mighty wind blowing: Suddenly christians stopped hiding and fearing. You gave them courage and love overflowing, So they proclaimed You to all in their hearing.

Help us to see You, still calling and caring, Help us to know You among us, creating. Spirit of God, give us courage and daring To share with a world that is waiting. amen.

For Your gift of God the Spirit, pow’r to make our lives anew, Pledge of life and hope of glory, Savior, we would worship You. Crowning gift of resurrection sent from Your ascended throne, Fullness of the very Godhead, come to make Your life our own. He Who in creation’s dawning brooded on the lifeless deep, Still across our nature’s darkness moves to wake our souls from sleep, Moves to stir, to draw, to quicken, thrusts us through with sense of sin; Brings to birth and seals and fills us, saving Advocate within. He, Himself the living Author, wakes to life the sacred Word, Reads with us its holy pages and reveals our risen Lord. He it is Who works within us, teaching rebel hearts to pray, He Whose holy intercessions rise for us both night and day. He, the mighty God, indwells us; His to strengthen, help, empower; His to overcome the tempter; ours to call in danger’s hour. In His strength we dare to battle all the raging hosts of sin, And by Him alone we conquer foes without and foes within.

When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.

and divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.

And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven.

And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language.

and they were amazed and astonished, saying, “are not all these who are speaking Galileans?

And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language?

parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and cappadocia, pontus and asia, phrygia and pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of libya belonging to cyrene, and visitors from rome, both Jews and proselytes, cretans and arabians— we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.”

And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others mocking said,

“They are filled with new wine.”

Paraments

The paraments for the pulpit on pentecost Sunday are a deep, rich red, adorned with large, burning flames embroidered in three shades of gold thread, outlined with gold metallic stitches, signifying the coming of the Holy Spirit to the disciples to give them power to take the Gospel to the world. The flames represent the “tongues of fire” which came to rest upon each of them. The red color of the cloth itself also represents fire. Three leaping flames are sewn in gold silk thread upon each Bible marker.

We consider it a privilege to have our children in worship with us. If your small children become restless and vocal, we invite you to the children’s room especially designed for them at the rear of the Sanctuary. They are also welcome in the nursery. Older children should also be encouraged to come to church prepared to stay in their pew throughout the service. One of our pastors will be available after the service to pray for you or to offer helpful direction regarding your spiritual life. He will be in the Gathering Room, which is the first room on your left as you exit the southwest door of the Sanctuary (closest to the pulpit). You may also send your confidential email to [email protected] with questions about your spiritual life.
