SCHS Fencing Program

Description The sport of fencing is a uniquely classic activity which has a history of drama, romance and style as well as being active and physically demanding. Fencing is a fun and energetic sport that incorporates agility and quick reflexes but is also described as a ‘thinker’s sport, where the tactics employed are often likened to those seen in the game of chess. The sport also enhances fine motor skills and hand eye coordination, where strategy plays a fundamental role in the successful execution of technique to win points. Points are scored by making contact with the blade on the correct target area of an opponent. There are many benefits to participating in the sport of fencing. Students learn good sportsmanship and self-discipline and to compete independently as well as for a team. They are exposed to opportunities to work towards goals and learn to make complex decisions, analyse problems and think fast, all whilst becoming physically fit and healthy. These qualities help students to reach their potential in many areas of their lives. Throughout the program students will specialise in the weapon known as epée where they will develop their skills, incorporating many of the signature moves and tactics of the sport. The epée is a descendant of the duelling sword with a large guard to protect the hand from a valid hit. Points are scored only when the point of the blade makes contact with any part of the opponent’s body. A full-body target naturally makes the epée a competition of careful strategy and patience, therefore, rather than attacking outright, epeeists often spend several minutes investigating their opponent’s defences and manoeuvring for distance before risking an attack. Students will have the chance to compete against each other in mini competitions throughout the program. No previous experience is necessary!

Choose this if you enjoy The history of sword fighting: Modern fencing is the direct descendant of dueling and, before that, military and civilian sword combat. However, it was dueling that provided the impetus to both formulate rules of engagement and to undertake the formal study and teaching of effective technique in attack and defence. It was a "sport" with a very clear purpose. No matter how far we are removed from more brutal times, fencing as a sport retains a visceral "edginess" that is part of the mental discipline that it teaches. Individual sports: Fencing is an intense sport requiring a high level of both mental and physical speed and

Skills you will develop The sport of fencing exercises both the mind and the body. It involves the analysis of strategy, tactics and psychological control, as well as developing coordination, dexterity, fitness, strength and balance. Students will learn how to fence with the epée. Footwork Students are taught how to adopt and maintain a side-on "squat" position; the "en garde" position. The object is to make instinctive the correct posture and the capacity to use it to maintain a safe distance from a moving opponent when desired and to be able to close distance from an opponent and attack and retire again, when desired.

Page 19: Options in this handbook Co-Curricular 2017 Handbook · Co-Curricular 2017 Handbook ... The program aims to transform students into semi-professional chess players. ... chess tactics,

agility. However, it is also subtle. Sheer force or speed will rarely be successful. It combines learned reflexive skills with considered responses to observation of an opponent, applied psychology and strategy. Because these elements are all involved, but can be used indifferent combinations, a wide range of people can succeed as a fencer over a long time by exploiting their relative advantages and compensating for their relative shortcomings by thinking about what they are doing.

Swordwork Drills teach students the various techniques of the use of the epee for guarding, attacking, parrying and riposting, deception and counter deception. Part of that work is to develop sensitivity to the opponent's actions and reactions, habits, weaknesses, and to exploit them to advantage.

Time commitment Co-curricular periods only. Opportunity for interschool weekend

Musical Production Description The school musical production will allow students an opportunity to showcase their talents in the areas of singing, dancing and acting, with the potential for some students to take on leading roles. Participation in the school musical will also encourage students to build their personal confidence levels and promote valuable teamwork skills. Whilst the co-curricular program will be used as regular rehearsal time, students will be expected to attend additional rehearsals after school and over the mid-year holiday break. Students will ultimately represent Suzanne Cory High School in front of other school groups and the general public when the production is performed at the beginning of Term 3. Please note: The Musical Production co-curricular program is compulsory for all cast members. Students who intend to participate in the band can also sign up for this co-curricular programme and they will be guided and mentored by the Musical Director. Philosophy Circle

Description What is happiness? Is beauty in the eye of the beholder? Do human beings have free will? Is the use

of torture ever permissible? Under what circumstances is it justifiable to disobey the law? Can

machines think? These are just a few of the questions that we will examine within the SCHS

Philosophy Circle.

The ability to think is highly transferrable to other subjects and is increasingly sought after by

employers. Philosophy is also useful in negotiating the stresses and choices of daily life. In the

Philosophy Circle, participants will have the opportunity to explore ideas, listen to different

opinions and be open-minded. Together we will develop critical thinking, logical and ethical

reasoning. Be prepared to think deeply, ask questions, challenge assumptions, discuss (rather than

debate) points of view and change your mind if you feel like it. It is not necessary to have any

experience of studying philosophy to join.

Our discussions will be stimulated by the essential questions and great thinkers of the past and

present. However, we will often talk about contemporary issues, movies, books and everyday

problems from a philosophical angle. You will also be encouraged to develop your own topics for

discussion.

Choose this if you enjoy Discussion Critical thinking Problem solving Moral and ethical issues Logic Puzzles Thought experiments Contemporary issues Art, Film and Literature Science Fiction

Skills you will develop • inter-personal and communication skills • generate ideas on a variety of problems • uncover assumptions and suggest

alternatives • analyse, develop and formulate logical

arguments • develop the capability to make

knowledgeable decisions, examining thoroughly the consequences of various actions

• make ethical decisions • interpret and assess various thoughts and

Sign Language Club Description Sign language is one of the most enthralling languages to learn. It is a form of non-verbal system of communication that focuses on communicating one’s ideas and thoughts through hand shapes, finger spelling, and facial expressions. Originated initially as the language for deaf people, sign language learners now also include a wide number of hearing people. It is a unique language with a distinctive syntax and grammar. Many people misinterpret it as the signed manner of English, but it is indeed an entirely discrete language altogether. Rather, it has been universally accepted as a true language. Not only is this a foreign language benefit this will assist with professional benefits which will make you more employable in the future.

Whitelion helps young people find the courage to seek a better future and aims to break the cycle of substance abuse, criminal activity and incarceration by providing young people at risk with opportunities to make links and build relationships with the community with education and employment opportunities Three main components (For the Co-Curricular program) 1. Volunteering – incorporating Youth Participation o Ideas: Making up toiletry packs to be handed out through NOSH program (mobile outreach); assistance with developing youth friendly resources/program development (youth participation aspect) 2. Advocacy – tying into Social Change o Ideas: Project around raising awareness about youth homelessness (students could have a project to work on throughout the semester, such as a petition – an idea we had was creating a postcard about youth homelessness and on the back having a petition that can be signed) 3.
