Music Education at The Moreton Bay CollegesIn a world with so many conflicting influences, accessing an education that values seeking meaning and engagement is fundamental to building communities that are places of compassion, understanding and justice.Within this context, the Arts hold an almost unique position in our education system. We can offer our students few other endeavours that so integrate the 21st Century requirements for critical and creative thinking, emphasise a team ethic building personal and social skills, and hold an integral obligation to listen and communicate. All this sits within an environment that is collegial instead of competitive, and collaborative rather than individual. In a society that under values principles and over values judgement, the benefit of activities that promote cultural sensitivity and aesthetic learning cannot be overstated.

Participation in ensemble music therefore becomes an invaluable component of a well-rounded and holistic education, as well as a source of great connection and joy within our community.

But don’t just take my word for it - follow this link to hear what renowned jazz trumpeter and music educator Wynton Marsalis has to say about music education. His words are aimed initially at teachers, however they also speak directly to the importance and impact of learning music for both our students and the whole of society.

Primary Immersion ProgrammeStudents in Years 4 and 5 at each campus engage in a two-year, compulsory, curriculum-based instrumental Immersion Programme. In Year 4 all students elect to study an orchestral or band instrument.

Instruments available include:

violin - viola - cello - double bass - flute - clarinet - saxophone - trumpet - trombone - french horn - euphonium – tuba - percussion

Students nominate their first three instrumental preferences, and these nominations, together with suitability testing, are used to allocate instruments. Numbers of instruments available are determined such that balanced ensembles are created.

The Immersion Programme involves a weekly small group lesson with a specialist teacher and class ensemble rehearsal. Each class attends music as a cohort, with multiple group lessons delivered simultaneously in order to minimise disruption to class teaching in the Primary School.

At any stage of the programme or at the end of Year 5, students may continue studying their instrument by taking private lessons at the Colleges, and by joining one of the many co-curricular ensembles available.

Missed LessonsFrom time to time, a student may be unable to attend a lesson due to illness, scheduled school activities or a public holiday. In these situations, where possible, the music teacher and the student will negotiate a mutually agreeable time for a make-up lesson. Where it is not possible to arrange a make-up lesson, the missed lesson will not be charged for. If a teacher is absent due to illness, they will endeavor to negotiate a time with students for a make-up lesson.

If students have a special circumstance when they know they will need to miss a lesson (such as an exam or sporting activity) and they are able to provide the music teacher with a minimum of 24 hours notice of their intended absence, the music teacher will reschedule the lesson, if possible. It is the responsibility of students to be aware of their commitments and assist their teachers by providing advance notice that a lesson time is unsuitable.

Duration and Lesson TimesLessons are negotiated between the student and the music teacher at the beginning of each term. Lessons are scheduled for 30 minutes during the school day on a rotating basis in order to minimise disruptions to other studies. Students must bring their instrument and associated equipment to every lesson.

Payment of FeesAccounts for lessons are sent each term by the College. Fees are to be paid either directly to the music teacher (sessional staff), or to the College (where the teacher is a permanent staff member). This will be clearly stated on the invoice.

Fees must be paid in full by parents/guardians by the due date each term and are charged in accordance with the Queensland Music Teacher Association Guidelines (currently $74/hour).

My Music StaffThe Moreton Bay Colleges currently use My Music Staff software for the delivery and management of our private instrumental lessons programme. Each student who takes lessons here at the Colleges will be provided with a login to this software which will allow them to keep track of lesson times, view lesson notes from their teacher, access resources and log their practice.

Use of College InstrumentsThe Colleges’ have available a limited number of instruments for the use of students who are enrolled in private lessons and involved in the ensemble programme. These are typically the larger, more expensive instruments.

Where possible, students transitioning from the Primary Immersion Programme to private instrumental lessons will be allowed the continued use of a College instrument in Year 6 before purchasing their own instrument. Staff are most willing to assist with advice for the selection and purchase of student instruments.

External ExaminationsStudents are encouraged to enroll for external music examinations once they have achieved an appropriate performance standard. Many of our students undertake AMEB Examinations, both in traditional and Rockschool syllabi.

College staff are fully supportive of the examination process, and many of our teachers are members of the AMEB Board of Examiners.

Ensemble ProgrammeThe Moreton Bay Colleges offer students the opportunity to join a wide range of musical ensembles. Ensembles operate across both campuses, and are categorised as large and small ensembles. Students who accept positions in auditioned ensembles must be taking instrumental or vocal lessons either at the Colleges or privately. Students who have private teachers outside the Colleges are encouraged to participate in our co-curricular music programme. It is an expectation that all students who are enrolled in private lessons at the Colleges be members of College ensembles once a suitable playing level has been reached.

22 ensembles across both campuses will be offered in 2021. Students must be members of a large ensemble (if required) before joining additional small

We require students who accept positions in College ensembles to prioritise rehearsals and performances over external commitments. This is essential to preserve the integrity of our performing groups.

Please make careful note of the Concert Calendar included with this booklet.

AuditionsThe Moreton Bay Colleges’ hold auditions in August and January each year to determine ensemble positions. All positions are declared vacant until the audition process is complete. It is important to recognise that young musicians progress at different rates and there are new applicants each year, making the audition process very competitive. All new students to MBC and MBBC will be given the opportunity to audition for College ensembles.

• Students will be placed according to their audition performance in an ensemble or ensembles that best match their playing standard, and for which they are best suited.

• Ensemble positions are not determined or affected by year level.

• Participation in an instrumental ensemble is dependent on students learning their instrument from an instrumental teacher as this enables the music to be taught in a one-on-one manner and the standard of the ensemble is improved.

• The numbers of positions in College Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Chamber Strings and Senior Stage Band will be decided such that standard, balanced ensembles are established.

• Students who wish to join a small instrumental ensemble must first be members of a large instrumental ensemble (if required).

• Girls who wish to join Vocal Point or Chamber Choir or who gain a place in a Rock Band as a vocalist, must be members of Chorale.

• Girls who nominate to audition for Chorale only will be called to audition in small groups. All secondary girls who audition will gain a place in this group.

• It is our policy that ensemble opportunities are made available to all students once a suitable playing standard has been reached.

Please note that although all secondary girls who apply to be members of Chorale will be accepted, students are still required to audition so that they can be placed appropriately within the group.

With the exception of Primary Choirs at MBC and MBBC, all groups require an audition for entry.

Audition Process Auditions are conducted by two-member audition panels who will determine if an applicant meets the required standard for participation in an ensemble, and rank the audition performance compared to other applicants.

Students who wish to audition should complete the attached audition form and return a copy to Music Reception (MBC) or Student Reception (MBBC).

Students who wish to audition should complete the online audition form found here.

At least two weeks prior to audition dates, audition music will be emailed to all applicants. In consultation with teachers, students will be required to prepare the set music. Vocalists are required to prepare and own choice piece in addition to the set music.

Auditions for current students will be held late in Term 3 each year and students will be advised of their times in advance.

Audition results will be emailed to students by the beginning of Term 4. Students should be aware that there may be some minor changes once new students to the Colleges have had the opportunity to audition.

Managing Multiple CommitmentsIt is inevitable that, given the wide range of activities offered to students at MBC and MBBC, conflicts with rehearsals and performances will occur from time to time. When this occurs, the staff involved will always try to negotiate a workable arrangement that allows the student to participate in both activities. Unfortunately, sometimes this may not be achievable, and the student will need to make a choice about where their primary interest lies.

The Colleges expect that students prioritise school commitments over external activities. By accepting a position in a College ensemble students commit to that group and all of its activities for a full year. Students who miss rehearsals or performances and consequently affect the work of the ensemble may be asked not to perform in a concert, or to leave that group. Students should note that their enrolment in private lessons at the colleges is conditional on their involvement in a co-curricular group.
