Mr. Thompson ELA 5th Grade Week of April 20-24
Hi everyone,
I hope you’re staying healthy and aren’t going too stir-crazy! I
miss all of you, and I can’t wait until we all see one another again.
There are quite a few pages in this packet, so let me explain to you
exactly what this thing is. This week, your ELA assignment is to play a
game of ELA BINGO on the attached BINGO card. You may choose to
do all five of your chosen squares in one day, or you may choose to do
one per day and end up with a BINGO on Friday! I have included all the
possible worksheets in this packet. I have also included, on the page
after the BINGO card, a brief description of some of the writing projects
that I have outlined in the BINGO card. At the end of everything, there’s
an answer sheet for the review questions.
I want to remind you all that all this work is optional and will not
be taken for a grade. If you have any questions as you’re working
through these things, don’t hesitate to contact me during my office hours
(8:30-12:30, M-F) via email or Remind.
I love you all, and I can’t wait to see you all again!

Some Clarifications
1) When I say, “Read for at least 20 minutes,” this means read anything. Read something that
you enjoy. It would make me happy if you were reading some big, long, academic book. It would
make me just as happy if I knew you were reading about Minecraft, Spider-Man, or a talking dog
trying to make his way home. Any reading that you do is good for you! (Hey—that rhymed!)
2) A quick word on limericks:
Limericks are five-line poems that have some special rules.
a. Lines 1, 2, and 5 have the same amount of syllables as one another, and these
three lines rhyme with each other.
b. Lines 3 and 4 have the same amount of syllables as one another, and these two
lines rhyme with each other.
c. Limericks are typically very silly, but they don’t necessarily have to be.
Here’s my example:
When quarantined in the fifth grade,
turn lemons into lemonade!
Add some water and sugar
(else it’ll taste like a booger)
and enjoy that sweet drink you’ve made.
3) A quick word on haiku:
A haiku is a three-line poem with a very specific set of rules.
a. The first line of the poem is five syllables, the second line is seven syllables,
and the third line is five syllables.
b. While not always, most haiku are about nature, and most of the lines stand by
themselves. However, this is not always the case. I will give an example of both.
Waves crash into dunes.
The taste of salt on my tongue.
Large white seagull cries.
(That is my nature example. Notice how each line is its own thought. Notice, too, how I
did not use complete sentences; this is okay to do when you’re writing poetry.)
Tonight, I will paint
my baby’s face while my wife
is sleeping. A prank!
(This is not about nature, and I carried my thoughts from one line into the next. That’s
okay, too!)
4) If you choose the option that requires you to write me an email, my email is
[email protected]. I look forward to hearing from you!

Arrowheads
by C. Vesely
Arrowheads are important artifacts that tell us about the past. An artifact is an item that was created by humans from an earlier time and was used for a certain purpose. An arrowhead, like the name suggests, is the tip of an arrow. Ancient people carved arrowheads out of stone and bone. Archaeologists, scientists that study artifacts, sort arrowheads by the dates they were made and by the name of the group of people who made them. Archaeologists use point typologies to help date and label arrowheads. A point typology is an arrowhead that shows an example of the size and shape of arrowheads from a certain region. Other arrowheads can be compared to point typologies to determine which group may have made them and when. When an arrowhead is named as a certain point typology, the archaeologists know that a certain group of people probably lived in the area where the arrowhead was found. Arrowheads provide important information about history. About four decades ago, the discovery of an arrowhead in Driggs, Idaho gave new evidence about that area. The arrowhead was dated back to over 10,000 years ago. The size and shape of this arrowhead connect it to the Clovis period. The Clovis people are thought to be the earliest people to have a permanent settlement in North America. They most likely stayed there because of the availability of food. Before the arrowhead was discovered,
no one knew that the Clovis people had lived there. Now, archaeologists are searching for more artifacts in that area. Arrowheads can help us find out a lot of information about the past.
2. What is the main reason why the author includes the definition of artifact in the passage?
A. to inspire the reader to become an archaeologist
B. to persuade the reader to make tools and other items for certain purposes
C. to support the idea that arrowheads tell important information about the past
D. to describe the appearance of an arrowhead
The Presentation
CHARACTERS:
LIAM
DYLAN
Scene 1: Liam and Dylan are outside a building.
LIAM: I've been waiting for a long time in this hot weather. How can you be late? Why are
you out of breath and sweating so much? It will make a bad impression on the judges.
DYLAN: I'm sorry. I tried calling you but—
LIAM: I don't want to hear your excuses. Let's go in; we are already late. I hope you brought
my flash drive for the presentation.
(Both walk inside the building.)
Scene 2: Liam and Dylan are in a room full of people.
(Dylan connects a flash drive to the laptop and starts the presentation. Liam notices
that there were some changes in the presentation. Everyone claps loudly when the
presentation is over.)
LIAM: (in a better mood) Why didn't you use the flash drive I gave you yesterday?
DYLAN:
Actually, after going home last night, I wanted to give the presentation some final
touches. However, when I opened the file, I saw that it was blank. I tried calling you,
but you did not answer your phone.
LIAM:
(puzzled) Why was the file blank? Oh, no! Shery, our dog came running with a stick in
her mouth, when I was saving the file. She dropped the stick at my feet and bounded
toward the backyard. Maybe I forgot to save the file correctly before going out into the
backyard.
DYLAN: Since I couldn't speak to you, I made another presentation based on the points we'd
discussed earlier. That's why I was late this morning.
LIAM: I'm sorry for being irresponsible, Dylan. I'm glad you made a new presentation so
quickly.

Jimmy had a big problem: he had waited till the last minute to do his research paper. Although his teacher had given the class a full six weeks to get it done, Jimmy had played with his friends every afternoon. He never cracked a book or even did an online search of the subject. Now, he had two days to get it done. When he asked his mother for help, she asked how long he'd known about the assignment. He considered lying to her and blaming his teacher for not giving them enough time. He decided against that strategy because he knew his mother would call Mrs. Ransom and ask. She'd done that before, and he had gotten grounded for lying. "I've had six weeks," he answered. "You know Jimmy, it's not really my job to save you from your own bad decisions," she said. "You're going to have to do this on your own. I think that's the only way you're ever going to learn not to put things off. Haven't you ever heard the saying 'don't put off till tomorrow what you can do today'?" "Oh, Mom, I can do it in two days if you'll help me." "Sorry, son, I've got other things to do," she said. "You're on your own."
4. What is the main theme of this passage?
A. Playing with friends after school is a bad idea.
B. Big assignments take a lot of time to finish.
C. Do not wait till the last minute to do things.

Who Is the Best?
by C. Vesely
Everyone should agree that Mickey Nadroj is the all-time best basketball player. However, some people think otherwise. They say that the younger James Bronle is the all-time best. Piper Scott, one of Nadroj's former teammates, would disagree with the statement that Nadroj is the all-time best player. "Nadroj was and is great. However, Bronle is a better all-around player than Nadroj ever was. Bronle is quick on the offense and the defense. He's a more complete player. No one gets by Bronle," Piper Scott stated in an interview last Thursday. Grant Ecaroh, another former teammate of Nadroj, was displeased by Scott's comments. He responded in a separate interview. "I do not know how Piper Scott could claim that Bronle is better than Nadroj! Nadroj scored more points per game on average than Bronle has. For me, the proof that Nadroj is better and will always be better is the fact that he has eight championship rings. How many does Bronle have? Count 'em. Zero!" Ecaroh said. Mickey Nadroj has outscored James Bronle on average. Nadroj also made his team play better through his encouragement and positive attitude. Bronle has been known to tear down his teammates and to hog the ball. Fans should judge for themselves, but keep in mind, Nadroj has eight championship rings while Bronle has none.
5. Which of the following is the best support for the main idea of the passage?
A. the description of Nadroj's attitude
B. the quote from Piper Scott
C. the author's stated opinion
D. the quote from Grant Ecaroh
Epiphany
adapted from Plato
A long time ago in Greece, there was a girl named Epiphany. She lived with her brother in a cave. They were afraid of a scary ogre, so they had to hide very quietly and carefully in this cave. They hid for a long time. To pass the time, Epiphany and her brother would look at the shadows cast on the cave wall. They had no idea what these shadows were, but they would make up names for each of them. Once her brother saw the shadow of a bird pass across the wall, and he cried out, "There, I call that one Avis." Epiphany agreed that was a good name. Then, Epiphany cried out, "There, I call that one Arbor." They both agreed that was a good name, too. The time came when the children's food ran out. Epiphany, being the oldest, had to sneak outside of the cave and find something for them to eat. She crept very carefully to the opening of the cave where she was blinded by the rays of the sun. When Epiphany's eyes finally opened and saw the world around her, she had no words to explain its beauty. She saw the thing that made the shadow her brother called "Avis." It was a bright bird with colorful tail feathers. She saw the thing that made the shadow she called "Arbor." It was an old, old olive tree. She went to this tree and gathered many olives for her brother and herself. With her arms full, she sneaked back into the cave. Epiphany's brother was excited to see her return. Epiphany told him about wonderful things outside. "Avis," she said, "is a bright, shiny bird of many colors, not a black shadow on the wall." Her brother laughed at Epiphany. "Don't be silly, Epiphany, I know what I saw. There is Avis right there." She looked where her brother pointed. She saw the shadow of the bird and became very sad.
6. What is the theme of "Epiphany"?
A. Sometimes truth is hard for some people to believe.
B. Sometimes it's a good idea to hide from an ogre.
C. Sometimes playing a joke on friend is a bad idea.
D. Sometimes older sisters have to make sacrifices.

AUTHOR’S PURPOSE PRACTICE
Music and Intelligence
Many people think that learning to play a musical instrument is just a fun activity. However,
it has many benefits. Nowadays more and more parents are encouraging their young children to
learn music. According to a report published in the Journal of Music and Health, when children
learn to play music, their brain processes sounds that they may otherwise not be able to hear. The
report states that there is a strong connection between musical training and brain health. Another
study showed that music helps in the development of memory in children between the ages of
two and three. Students who learn to play a musical instrument at an early age get better grades
in school. They perform better in subjects such as art, science, math, and languages.
Roger Branson is a doctor who deals with children's health. He says that learning a musical
instrument also helps reduce anxiety in children. It has a calming and soothing effect on their
minds. Another benefit from playing a musical instrument is that it helps children learn patience
and discipline. Children also learn to appreciate other cultures through music.
However, not everyone believes that music can help children do better at school. Researchers
at the Institute for Children state that there is no clear evidence to prove that music helps children
perform better at school. They believe that the connection between music and intelligence
depends on the personality and character of the child, and that music does not help promote a
child's intelligence.
In spite of these arguments, learning music is becoming popular all over the world. Children
benefit hugely from learning to play a musical instrument. Music promotes calmness, happiness,
and success. Both schools and parents must encourage children to learn to play musical
instruments.
1. What statement could the author add to strengthen his or her argument?
A. The violin and the guitar are known as string instruments and are the most widely played
instruments.
B. Jazz, blues, and rock are different styles of music popular in many parts of the world.
C. Schools in Japan require all elementary students to learn a musical instrument.
D. Studies show that drums, which are important in some cultures, are difficult for children
to learn how to play.
2.

Why does the ad include the doctor's opinion?
A. The audience trusts an expert's opinion.
B. The audience needs facts about the medicine.
C. The audience wants to see a photograph.
D. The audience is afraid of doctors.
Most teens that live at home still have to rely on their parents to support them. Whether it's
with money, food, a home, or even transportation, many teens find themselves having to be
supported by their parents. What's amusing is that most teens want to be treated as adults. They
want their independence. This is of course hard when they still live at home. What many don't
consider is finding a job. If more teens were to actively try to work, they would be able to take
those first steps to independence and adulthood.
Many teens who work at home already get allowances. Some receive allowances for chores
they complete. Some receive an allowance because their parents feel generous. Allowances give
teens the opportunity to buy things they may want or need. The problem with an allowance is
that it is usually a set dollar amount. Unless it is saved, the chances of getting more money is
hard. The allowance will probably stay the same. With a job, anyone who works gets paid by the
hour. This means that person can possibly get more money than a set allowance would provide
depending on how many hours he/she may work. Having money earned from a job, especially
one that pays more than an allowance, means you have more money to buy the things you want.
It also means you don't have to wait on your parents to buy things for you.
People will argue that teenagers should be more concerned with school than with making
money. School is very important, but having a job is more than just making money. Having a job
also shows that you can follow guidelines and take instructions. Nobody likes being told what to
do. But when the person telling you what to do tells you that you will be rewarded, it makes
things a lot easier to take. Most adults who work have had to deal with similar situations.
Teenagers who have to answer to a boss when they work will be more likely to listen to other
adults, not only just their parents. Adults who are treated with respect by teenagers are more
likely to treat teenagers like adults too.
3. What statement could the author add to strengthen his argument?
A. A job is more important than going to school because it gives you money in return for a
task.
B. School is more important than a job because school teaches you how to do a job as well as
what job you will be good at doing.
C. Teenagers should be worrying about school rather than trying to make money at a job
they will not keep that long anyway.
D. Why save up allowance money to buy a new pair of shoes, when you could just buy them
with your own money without having to save?
4. What is the author trying to persuade the audience?
A. Teenagers should act more mature.

It is my opinion that women can be great presidents. The good qualities for being the
president of the United States can be found in both men and women. Just because there has never
been a woman president in the past doesn't mean there can't be a woman president.
A good president needs to be drug free. He or she needs to make good choices. He or she
needs to keep promises, follow the laws, and do other good things to help the world. Women,
just like men, have all these qualities. In the United States, many women are members of
Congress. Others are senators. There are women mayors, governors, and business people. There
is no reason a woman cannot be president of the United States.
In fact, some women might make a better president than some men. Women can work with
the government just like men. The Secretary of State is Condoleezza Rice. She works with many
different governments, just like the president of the United States.
Some people will say that women should be mothers and raise children. No one is arguing
that point. Raising children is important. Kids need guidance from parents. However, why can't
men raise children too? Many world leaders who are women are mothers as well as leaders of
government. It's just like with presidents who are men. Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, Bill
Clinton, and George Bush were all presidents of the United States. They were also fathers and
husbands. Women can also be parents as well as leaders.
When people vote, they should look at the qualities that make a great president. They should
look to see if the person will be a good leader. They should not look at history or gender.
5. The author shows the other side of the argument when he or she states, "Some people will say
that women should be mothers and raise children. No one is arguing that point. Raising children
is important. Kids need guidance from parents."
Why would the author include the other side of the argument in the persuasive essay?
A. The author wants to show why men make better government leaders.
B. It shows that the author has considered both sides of the argument.
C. It shows that the author believes women should only raise children.
D. The author wants to show that women would not make good government leaders.
Cycling
Pollution has majorly affected human lives. According to recent research, cities all over the
world have seen forty percent rise in health problems due to pollution. The best way to reduce
pollution is to replace motor vehicles with bicycles as the main mode of transport.
Cycling is the cheapest mode of transport. Unlike other vehicles, a bicycle does not run on
fuel. This helps to save the money spent on fuel. Unlike other vehicles, traveling by bicycle also
helps people save time. Cyclists do not have to wait in long lines or get stuck in traffic for hours.
According to a survey by City Travel, traveling by bike instead of motor vehicle in major cities
helps a person save around two hours a day. Bicycles are not so expensive and are also easy to
maintain. The biggest advantage of bicycles is that they do not pollute the environment. As
bicycles do not run on fuel, they do not release any harmful gases that pollute the air. An
additional advantage of riding a bicycle is that it is a good way to keep oneself fit and active.
Cycling regularly strengthens the muscles in the human body and keeps the heart healthy.
Cycling saves time, money, and is good for the environment and the body. Therefore, everyone
should switch to using bicycles instead of cars.
6. Which statement could the author add to strengthen his or her argument?
A. Many people have said that using a sunscreen is a must when cycling during the day.
B. Many cities in Europe have created clean-air zones where people can travel only by
bicycles.
C. Since cycling is a physical activity, it makes people tired and helps them sleep better.
D. People who travel by bicycle are more sensitive and concerned about their health.

Make Them Read
A hobby or a favorite pastime is something that one is interested in and likes to engage in
during one's leisure. Children pursue different hobbies such as drawing, painting, reading,
gardening, stamp collecting, and so on.
Reading is a very fulfilling hobby. Not only does it help children spend their spare time
effectively, but it also increases their knowledge. While reading a book, a reader comes across
many new words and phrases. In this way, reading helps a child to improve his or her
vocabulary. Reading also helps children develop their imagination.
This hobby offers a wide variety of options to choose from. From newspapers and magazines
to stories and novels, children can choose to read based on their interest. Though many readers
now prefer reading e-books and other online resources, printed books and other printed materials
remain the best form of reading.
The traditional form of reading a printed book has its own charm and benefits. Studies
suggest that reading on paper is good for the memory because it helps the brain retain
information better. Reading printed books is also considered healthier because it does not cause
as much strain to the eyes as reading from a screen.
Children must try to read something each day. Parents must help their children develop this
habit from a young age. They must educate them about the benefits of reading and help them
appreciate the value of good books. It is important to learn to distinguish between helpful and
harmful content. All content available for reading is not suitable or beneficial. Parents and
teachers must advise children to choose wisely.
In the busy schedule of daily life, it is important to make time to read. Reading is not just a
pastime but a window to a world of knowledge, information, and imagination. What food is to
the body, books are to the mind! Therefore, every child must take up reading.
8. Which statement could the author add to strengthen the argument of the passage?
A. Parents must ask children to read newspapers only because they are the best source of
information.
B. Research shows that reading from a screen slows down a person's reading speed by 20 to
30 percent.
C. Children now have more options for reading because there are a lot of reading materials
available online.
D. Research shows that people who read have a positive attitude and deal with problems in
better and calmer ways.

How the Dragon Was Tricked
Once upon a time, there lived a man who had two sons. The sons did not get along well together. The younger son was more handsome than his elder brother, who was very jealous of him. When they grew older, things became worse and worse. At last, one day as they were walking through the woods, the elder youth seized hold of the other, tied him to a tree, and went on his way hoping that the boy might starve to death. However, it happened that an old, humpbacked shepherd passed the tree with his flock. Seeing the prisoner, he stopped and said to him, "Tell me, my son, why are you tied to that tree?" "Because I was so crooked," answered the young man. "It has quite cured me, and now my back is as straight as can be." "I wish you would bind me to a tree," exclaimed the shepherd, "so that my back would get straight." "With all the pleasure in life," replied the youth. "If you will loosen these cords, I will tie you up with them as firmly as I can." This was soon done. Then the young man drove off the sheep, leaving their real shepherd to wish he had not been so foolish. Before he had gone very far, the young man met with a horse boy and a driver of oxen, and he persuaded them to turn with him and to seek adventures. By these tricks and many others, he soon became so celebrated that his fame reached the king's ears, and his majesty was filled with curiosity to see the man who had managed to outwit everybody. So he commanded his guards to capture the young man and bring him before him. When the young man stood before the king, the king spoke to him and said, "By your tricks and the pranks that you have played on other people, in the eye of the law, you
must repay with your life. On one condition I will spare you, and that is if you will bring me the flying horse that belongs to the great dragon. Fail in this, and you shall be doomed." "If that is all," said the youth, "you shall soon have it." adapted from "How the Dragon Was Tricked" by Griechtsche und Albanesische Marchen, von J. G. von Hahn
3. What happens to the shepherd in the woods?
A. He straightens his back with the tree.
B. He follows a path to the king's castle.
C. He is tricked by the younger son.
D. He tries to find the flying horse.
Passage 1
Solar Energy
Humans depend on energy for almost every activity. Energy runs computers, televisions, and
cell phones. It is used for heating and cooling.
Energy used by humans can be divided into two categories: non-renewable and renewable.
This includes energy produced by man-made methods such as electricity produced in power
stations using coal, oil, and gas. Coal, oil and gas are examples of non-renewable resources
because they will run out after a certain period of time. Renewable sources of energy, on the
other hand, refer to natural sources that will never run out, such as the Sun, wind, and water.
With the increase in population, the demand for energy has also increased. In this situation,
renewable sources of energy provide an efficient solution to the problem of ever-increasing
demand for energy. Though the use of these sources has increased in recent years, they are still
not widely used. This is because getting energy from these sources can be expensive and time
consuming.
One type of renewable energy is solar energy, which is energy derived from the Sun. Solar
energy is generated using solar panels. The photovoltaic cells in the solar panels convert light
into electricity. Solar panels can be attached to rooftops, space crafts, or even on smaller devices
such as calculators. When sunlight strikes the cells on these panels, electricity is generated.
Power plants use this solar energy to generate electricity for human use. The heat from the Sun is
used to boil water, and this in turn powers a steam turbine, which has blades that spin when
powered by water, steam, or air. The turbine generates electricity that is then carried to houses,
and is used to power electrical devices.
Passage 2
Using Energy from the Sun
The demand for energy will never stop increasing because humans depend on energy to
survive. Most of the energy we use today comes from non-renewable sources such as coal and
oil. With the increasing population, these sources of energy are under risk of running out in the
future. There is an urgent need to develop and use energy from renewable sources such as the
Sun, water, and air. These sources are produced naturally, and will not run out.
Solar energy is energy that is produced using sunlight. It is one of the most practical sources
of energy available because most people have access to sunlight. While solar energy is produced
in power plants on a large scale, it can also be produced easily at home. Solar panels can be
attached to rooftops. When sunlight strikes the panel, electrons in the cells are knocked free.
Other parts of the panel then convert these electrons into electricity. This electricity can then be
used to power devices in the house.
Many people are now making use of solar panels to produce electricity at home. However,
there is still a long way to go before this method is widely used. Solar energy, like other sources
of renewable energy, can be expensive to produce, and not everyone can afford it. However, the
long-term advantages of using solar energy outweigh the short-term disadvantages. Everyone
should switch to using solar energy at home.
4. In "Using Energy from the Sun," what reason does the author use to support the idea that solar
energy is the most practical to produce?
A. It is a cheap substitute for coal and oil.
B. It can be produced in big power plants on a large scale.
C. It uses solar panels, which convert electrons to electricity.
D. It uses sunlight, which is easily available.
