ZEEV ZALEVSKY Faculty of Engineering and the Nano-Technology Center, Bar-Ilan University, Israel

THE POWER OF LIGHT: FROM RESEARCH TO COMMERCIALI-ZATION IN ELECTRO-OPTICS

Prof. Zeev Zalevsky is a full professor in electro-optics at the faculty of engineering in Bar Ilan University, Ramat-Gan, Israel. His research fields focus on bio-medical imaging, super resolution, silicon photonics, optics communication and nano-photonic devices and microwave photonics. Prof. Zalevsky is the Vice Dean of engineering, the head of the electro-optics track and a director of the nano photonics center at the insti-tute of nanotechnology of Bar-Ilan University. Zeev is also the founder of several startup companies. In my talk I will present the process of entrepreneurship starting from a seed idea and passing all the long and frustrating cycle of scientific maturing and validation, prototyping, fund raising, product oriented research and development, marketing, fabrication and producti-zation until it can be distributed to the end. I will give recent examples of the importance and the impact that this process has in the field of electro-optics and men-tion various optical inventions from the last decade in which I have been involved. In my overview I will focus on the path of specific pho-tonic technologies related to my personal research ac-tivity and which will involve devices for the field of optics communication and cyber technologies, through laser based pico-projectors, three dimensional sensing technologies, ophthalmic extended depth of focus lenses for solving presbyopia and astigmatism, non-contact photonic sensor for multi-functional home-care IOT device, micro-endoscopy for minimally invasive diseases diagnosis and treatment, special spectacles to allow blind people to “see” and smart clothing involv-ing wearable photonic multi-functional bio-sensor.

MALGORZATA KUJAWINSKA Warsaw University of Technology, Poland

HOLOGRAPHIC MICROSCOPY AND TOMOGRAPHY FOR QUANTITATIVE INVESTIGA-TION OF BIOLOGICAL AND OPTICAL MICROSTRUCTURES

Malgorzata Kujawinska PhD DSc., SPIE Fellow, Full Pro-fessor of applied optics at Warsaw University of Tech-nology. Expert in full-field optical metrology and 3D imaging, image processing, automatic data analysis for metrology and multimedia, design of novel photonics measurement and display systems. Author several mon-ographs and book chapters and more than 200 papers in international scientific journals. She had been the SPIE President in 2005 and recipient of SPIE 2013 C.S. Vikram Award in Optical Metrology. She is the Past Vice-President of European Technology Platform Pho-tonics 21 (2005-2016). The principles and the state-of the-art in the field of digital holographic microscopy (DHM) and tomography (DHT) including data processing for phase retrieval and further label-free tomographic reconstruction of 3D refractive index distribution are presented. The archi-tectures of holographic tomography systems and nu-merical algorithms for both full and limited projection angle tomography are discussed. In DHM special atten-tion is given to the novel schemes of modulation of an object illumination beam, numerical focusing, aberration compensation and holographic data manipulation. In DHT new object rotation and scanning methods are considered and the solutions for minimizing the influ-ence of so-called “missing cone” problem in limited pro-jection angle tomography are presented.

Several examples of 3D refractive index reconstruction

procedures are presented for both technical

(microlenses, fiber optics and its accessories: microtips,

microbridges) and biological (cells, tissues) micro-

objects. Finally the main challenges to be still solved in

the area of DHM and DHT are discussed.

OPTION I Lab visit at Swerea KIMAB “Analytical process monitoring”

Swerea KIMAB’s “analytical process monitoring” lab is devot-ed to the development of optical and acoustic techniques for on-line material characterization in industrial processes, aiming at improving product quality, production yield and resource efficiency. Among other techniques, our latest prototypes of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and laser ultra-sonics (LUS) will be presented and results from successful field trials will be discussed. LUS is a contact-free technique that enables the measurement of mechanical and microstructural properties continuously. Ultrasounds are generated in a target sample by using a laser pulse, propagate in the material and are detected by using another laser beam. The detection of bulk defect (cracks, pores), the measurement of microstructures (grain size, phase constitution and crystallographic texture) as well as thickness gauging are performed instantaneously by analyzing attenuation, reflection and velocity of acoustic waves. LIBS is an atomic-emission spectroscopy technique that enables rapid chemical analysis of a wide range of materials. The major strength of the LIBS technique is its ability to per-

form fast and remote chemical analysis to determine the ele-mental composition of samples under test without any sample preparation. The LIBS technology relies on focusing short, high-energy laser pulses onto the surface of a target sample to generate a plasma consisting of small amounts of ablated material, and analyzing the emitted spectra. www.swerea.se/en/test-demo/analytical-process-monitoring

OPTION II Lab visit at Electrum Laboratory

Electrum Laboratory and Albanova Nanofabrication Facility are the two laboratories operated within the KTH node of Myfab – the Swedish research infrastructure for micro- and nanofabrication. In Kista the Electrum Laboratory with a 1300 m2 clean room area and 1500 m2 additional laboratories is outstanding for fabrication and characterization in the nano and micro scale, supporting the whole chain from education, research and development, to prototyping and production.

The Electrum Laboratory and Albanova Nanofabrication Facil-ity maintain a multitude of capabilities covering most aspects of nano and microtechnology. In our flexible facilities both single samples and batches are equally welcome. We handle separate process steps to full sequences in fabrication and characterization. We offer access to sophisticated software for calculation and simulation. Our personnel are available to help you to master the wide world of nano and microtechnolo-gy. Some of our tools and processes are well suited for, and in some cases only accessible through remote processing, where you simply place an order with the information and material we need to deliver according to your specifications. At Electrum Laboratory we maintain full process lines for Sili-con CMOS, MEMS and compound semiconductors, including GaAs, InP and SiC. We also offer access to a wide variety of techniques for characterization of materials and devices. At Albanova Nanofabrication Facility you find Nanometer scale patterning and metrology for a wide variety of materi-als and substrate sizes. www.electrumlaboratoriet.se/Myfab.aspx

OPTION III Lab visit at KTH-Electrum – Material and Nano Physics

Optics and photonics have contributed, and will still contribute critically to the modern information society due to the high transmission speed and the abundant spectral bandwidth of light. We conduct research and education over topics ranging from basic physical investigation of emerging optical materials (including plasmonic materials, novel polymers, and metamate-rials), to semiconductor optics, silicon photonics, and optical communication, towards applications like lighting, detectors, spectroscopy, sensors, high-speed photonic circuits, and even solar-energy harvesting. We study, discover, and refine properties of nanofabricated materials that can potentially advance frontier of modern technologies. Our investigation concerns electronic, optical, optoelectronic, magnetic, phononic, thermal effects in such en-gineered materials, with a spatial resolution down to atomic level and a temporal resolution down to femtoseconds.
