Technical safety

Please observe the instructions in “Installation and connection”and “Technical data”.

Before setting up the washing machine, check it for any externallyvisible damage. Do not install or use a damaged machine.

Before connecting the washing machine, ensure that theconnection data on the data plate (fuse rating, voltage andfrequency) matches the mains electricity supply. If in any doubt, consult a qualified electrician.

Reliable and safe operation of this washing machine can only beassured if it has been connected to the mains electricity supply.

Warning and Safety instructions

9

The electrical safety of this washing machine can only beguaranteed when continuity is complete between it and an effectiveearthing system which complies with current local and nationalsafety regulations. It is most important that this basic safetyrequirement is present and regularly tested and, where there is anydoubt, the household wiring system should be inspected by aqualified electrician. Miele cannot be held liable for theconsequences of an inadequate earthing system (e.g. electricshock).

Do not connect the washing machine to the mains electricitysupply by a multi-socket adapter, extension lead or similar. These donot guarantee the required safety of the machine (fire hazard due tothe risk of overheating).

Faulty components must only be replaced by genuine Miele spareparts. Miele can only guarantee the safety of the appliance whenMiele replacement parts are used.

The electrical socket must be easily accessible after installation sothat the machine can be disconnected from the electricity supply ifnecessary.

Unauthorised repairs could result in unforeseen dangers for theuser, for which Miele cannot accept liability. Repairs should only beundertaken by a Miele authorised service technician, otherwise anysubsequent damage will not be covered by the warranty.

If the connection cable is faulty, it must only be replaced by aMiele approved service technician to protect the user from danger.

Warning and Safety instructions

10

In the event of a fault or for cleaning purposes, the washingmachine is only completely isolated from the electricity supply when:

– it is switched off at the wall socket and the plug is withdrawn, or

– it is switched off at the mains circuit breaker.

The machine must only be connected to the on-site water supplyusing a new hose kit. Old hose kits must not be re-used. Check thecondition of the hoses regularly so that you can replace them ingood time and avoid the risk of any water damage.

The water flow pressure must be at least 100 kPa and should notexceed 1000 kPa.

This washing machine must not be installed and operated inmobile installations (e.g. on a ship).

Do not make any alterations to the machine, unless authorised todo so by Miele.

In areas which may be subject to infestation by cockroaches orother vermin, pay particular attention to keeping the machine and itssurroundings in a clean condition at all times. Any damage whichmay be caused by cockroaches or other vermin will not be coveredby the machine warranty.

Warning and Safety instructions

11

Correct use

Do not install the washing machine in a room where there is a riskof frost. Frozen hoses may burst or split. The reliability of theelectronic control unit may be impaired at temperatures belowfreezing point.

Before using the machine for the first time, check that the transitbars at the rear of the machine have been removed (see “Installationand connection - Removing the transit bars”). During spinning, atransit bar which is still in place may result in damage to both themachine and adjacent furniture or appliances.

Turn off the tap if the machine is to be left for any length of time(e.g. holiday), especially if there is no floor drain (gully) in theimmediate vicinity.

Flooding danger. If hooking the drain hose into a wash basin, check that the water candrain off quickly enough to prevent the sink from overflowing. Makesure the drain hose is secure, so that the force of the water flowingout of the hose does not dislodge it.

Take care to ensure that foreign objects (e.g. nails, pins, coins, paper clips) do not find their way into the machine with the laundry. These may damage components of the machine (e.g. sudscontainer, drum), which in turn can result in damage to the laundry.

Warning and Safety instructions

12

Take care when opening the drum door after using the steamfunction. There is a danger of burning due to escaping steam andthe high temperature of the surface of the drum as well as theporthole glass. Stand back away from the machine and wait until thesteam has dissipated.

The maximum load for this washing machine is 8 kg (dry weight).See the “Programme chart” for the maximum recommended loadsfor individual programmes.

If the correct amount of detergent is dispensed, the machineshould not need to be descaled. If, however, you do wish to descaleit, only use a proprietary natural citric acid based descaling agent.Miele recommends using Miele descaler for washing machineswhich is available to order online at shop.miele.com (depending oncountry) or from Miele. Strictly observe the instructions on thepackaging.

Textiles which have been pre-treated in solvent based cleaningagents must be thoroughly rinsed in clean water before beingwashed in the machine.

Do not use solvent based cleaning agents, e.g. those containingbenzine, in this machine, as this may result in damage to componentparts and create toxic fumes. Such agents also pose a fire andexplosion hazard.

Do not use solvent based cleaning agents, e.g. those containingbenzine, to clean the external surfaces of the machine. They cancause damage to plastic surfaces.

Only use dyes specified by the manufacturer as being suitable foruse in a domestic washing machine. Always observe themanufacturer's instructions carefully.

Warning and Safety instructions

13

Colour run and dye removers contain sulphur compounds whichcan cause damage such as corrosion. Do not use these products inthis machine.

If detergent comes into contact with the eyes, rinse themthoroughly with lukewarm water immediately. If swallowed, seekmedical assistance immediately and retain the packaging or label forreference. Those with skin problems or sensitive skin should avoidtheir skin coming into contact with detergent.

Accessories

Only use genuine Miele spare parts and accessories with thisappliance. If spare parts or accessories from other manufacturersare used, this will invalidate the warranty, and Miele cannot acceptliability.

A Miele tumble dryer can be stacked on top of a Miele washingmachine using the appropriate stacking kit (available as an optionalaccessory). Please make sure you order the correct one for the Mielewashing machine and Miele tumble dryer.

19

Energy and water consumption

– To get the most out of your machine, load the maximum dry load for theprogramme you are using. The energy and water consumptionwill be the lowest in relation to thesize of the load.

– When smaller amounts of laundry arewashed, the Auto load control systemwill reduce the amount of water andenergy used.

– Use the Express 20 programme forsmall, lightly soiled loads.

– Modern detergents make it possibleto wash at lower temperatures (e.g.20°C). Using lower temperaturesettings will save energy.

– Washing at low temperatures and/orusing liquid detergents can causebacteria and odours to build up in thewashing machine. Miele thereforerecommends cleaning the washingmachine once every month.

The washing machine reminds you todo so with the following message inthe display: Hygiene info: Run aprogramme at min. 75°C or "Cleanmachine'" programme.

Detergent consumption

– Do not exceed the amounts ofdetergent recommended by themanufacturer on the packaging.

– Adjust the dosage to the degree ofsoiling of the laundry.

– Reduce the amount of detergent withsmaller loads (approx. ⅓ less thanthe amount recommended can beused when washing a half load).

When drying with a tumble dryer

Selecting the highest possible spinspeed for the wash programme willsave energy when drying in a tumbledryer afterwards.

1. Preparing the laundry

20

Empty all pockets.

Foreign objects (e.g. nails, coins, paper clips, etc.) can cause damageto garments and components in themachine.Check the laundry before washingand remove any such foreignobjects.

Sorting the laundry

Sort the laundry by colour and bycare label. Most garments have atextile care label in the collar or sideseam.

Useful tip: Dark textiles often containexcess dye and should be washedseparately several times before beingincluded in a mixed load. Always washwhite and coloured items separately.

Pre-treating stains

Badly soiled areas, stains etc. shouldbe cleaned as soon as possible, preferably while still fresh. Spillagesshould be carefully dabbed off usinga soft, colourfast cloth. Do not rub.

Useful tip: Stains can be pre-treatedusing some handy tricks, which can befound in “Miele's guide to laundry care”.Please contact Miele to obtain a copyof this booklet.

Solvent-based cleaners (e.g. onecontaining benzine) can damageplastic parts. When pre-treating garments, makesure that any plastic parts (e.g.buttons) do not come into contactwith cleaning agent.

Chemical (solvent-based)cleaning agents can cause severedamage to the washing machine.Do not use solvent-based cleaningagents in this machine.

If starching frequently, thoroughlyclean the dispenser compartment, especially the siphon tube, regularly.

5. Adding detergent

27

Tips on dosing

Adjust the detergent dosage to the levelof soiling of the laundry and the size ofthe load. Reduce the amount ofdetergent with smaller loads (e.g.reduce the amount of detergent by ⅓when washing a half load).

Too little detergent results in:

– laundry not getting properly cleanand with time it may become greyand hard to the touch.

– a build-up of mould in the washingmachine.

– grease not being completely removedfrom the laundry.

– limescale deposits on the heaterelements.

Too much detergent results in:

– poor wash, rinse, and spin results.

– a higher water consumption as anextra rinse cycle is automaticallyactivated.

– a greater burden on the environment.

Using liquid detergent with a pre-wash

Liquid detergent cannot be used for themain wash if the pre-wash has beenselected.

Use powder detergent for the mainwash.

Using detergent tablets or pods

Always put detergent tablets or podsdirectly in the drum with the laundry. They cannot be added via the detergentdispenser drawer.

See “Detergent” for further informationon detergents and dosage.

5. Adding detergent

Programme sequence

42

PowerWash 2.0PowerWash 2.0, a washing techniquedeveloped by Miele, is activated in thefollowing programmes with small andmedium-sized loads:

– Cottons

– Minimum iron

– Shirts

– Automatic plus

How it works

Conventional washing techniques washwith more water than the laundry canabsorb. This total volume of waterneeds to be heated.

The PowerWash 2.0 washing techniqueonly uses slightly more water than thelaundry can absorb. The water whichhas not been absorbed by the laundryheats up the drum and the laundry andis sprayed into the laundry over andover again. This reduces the amount ofenergy used.

Activation

The washing machine calculates theload at the beginning of the washprogramme. PowerWash 2.0 isactivated if the following conditions arepresent:

– There is a small to medium-sizedlaundry load in the drum.

– The temperature selected does notexceed 60°C.

– The final spin speed selected mustnot be lower than 600 rpm.

– CapDosing (, ) ) has not beenselected for the main wash.

With some options (e.g. Pre-wash,Water +) PowerWash 2.0 is notactivated.

Special features

– Drenching phaseThe washing machine will spin a fewtimes at the beginning of theprogramme. During spinning, thewater discharged is sprayed backinto the laundry in order to achieveoptimum moisture penetration.

The optimum water level is set at theend of the drenching phase. Ifnecessary, the washing machine willpump water away and take in a littlemore fresh water.

– Noises during the heating phaseUnusual bubbling noises can occurwhile the laundry and the drum arebeing heated.

– DetergentDispense the correct amount ofdetergent (with smaller loads).

The correct detergentAll detergents produced for automaticfront loading washing machines aresuitable. Follow the manufacturer'sinstructions and dosagerecommendations on the packaging.

The right amount to dispensewill depend on the following:– The soiling level of the laundry.

– The quantity of laundry.

– The water hardness level. Check withyour local water authority if you donot know the water hardness level inyour area.

Detergent dispensing aidsUse dispensing aids (e.g. balls) if theseare supplied with the detergent, particularly when using liquid detergent.

Refill packs of detergentWhen purchasing detergent, buy refillpacks wherever possible. This helpsreduce the amount of waste packaging.

Fabric softeners and liquidstarchFabric softeners make garments soft to handle and helpprevent static cling when tumble drying.

Fabric shapers are synthetic starches and give an evenstiffer hold.

Starch stiffens and gives body to items oflaundry, e.g. shirts, tablecloths and bedlinen.

General problems with the washing machine

Problem Possible cause and remedy

Large amounts ofdetergent residueremain in the detergentdispenser drawer.

The water pressure is too low. Clean the water inlet filter. Please note that the water pressure must be at

least 100 kPa (1 bar).Powder detergent used in conjunction with watersofteners tends to become sticky. Clean the detergent dispenser drawer and, in the

future, add washing powder to the dispensingdrawer first, and then add the water softener.

Fabric softener is notcompletely dispensedor too much waterremains in the compartment.

The siphon tube is not correctly positioned, or isclogged up. Clean the siphon (see “Cleaning and care -

Cleaning the detergent dispenser drawer”).

At the end of theprogramme there is stillliquid in the capsule.

The small pipe in the detergent dispenser drawer ontowhich the capsule is placed is blocked. Clean the small pipe.

This is not a fault. For technical reasons, a small amount of water willremain in the capsule.

There is water next tothe capsule in the fabricsoftener compartment.

The sensor was not activated or an emptycapsule was not removed at the end of the last washprogramme. Activate the sensor when a capsule is next

used. Remove and dispose of the empty capsule at the

end of each programme. The small pipe in the detergent dispenser drawer ontowhich the capsule is placed is blocked. Clean the small pipe.

An unsatisfactory wash result

Problem Possible cause and remedy

Grey, greasy particlescling to washed laundry.

Insufficient amounts of detergent were used to breakdown the particles of grease in heavily soiled laundry. Use more detergent or liquid detergent. Before washing the next load, run the Clean

machine programme using the Miele IntenseCleanwashing machine cleaner or a powder detergent.

White residues whichlook like powderdetergent are seen ondark textiles afterwashing.

The detergent contained compounds (zeolites) to aidwater softening which are not soluble in water. Thesehave ended up on the laundry. Try and brush off the residues with a soft brush

once the laundry is dry. Wash dark textiles using a detergent which does

not contain zeolites. Liquid detergents usually donot contain zeolites.

Use the Dark garments/Denim programme.

If the drain outlet is blocked, a largerquantity of water can remain in thewashing machine.

Risk of scalding due to hot suds.Escaping suds will be hot if laundryhas been washed at hightemperatures!Carefully allow all suds to drain off.

Procedure for draining the machine

When removing the drain filter, donot remove it completely.

Place a suitable container under theaccess panel, e.g. a universal oventray.

Slowly unscrew the filters until waterruns out. Be careful not to release toomuch water at once. If the flow ofwater is too strong, some water canseep into the machine base andactivate the water protection floatswitch. This will prevent the machinefrom functioning.

To interrupt the flow of water, tightenthe filters again.

Once the flow of water ceases:

Remove the filters completely.

Installation surfaceA concrete floor is the most suitableinstallation surface for a washingmachine, being far less prone tovibration during the spin cycle thanwooden floorboards or a carpetedsurface.

Please note:

The machine must be level andsecurely positioned.

To avoid vibrations during spinning, the machine should not be installedon soft floor coverings.

If installing on a wooden joist floor:

We recommend a plywood base (atleast 59 x 52 x 3 cm). The baseshould span several joists and bebolted to the joists and not only to thefloorboards. Check for the presenceof pipes and cables first.

Useful tip: If possible, install themachine in a corner, as this is usuallythe most stable part of the floor.

Transporting the washingmachine to its installation site

Make sure the fixings at the backof the lid are secure.Otherwise there is a danger of the lidbeing pulled off when carrying theappliance. Before carrying the appliance, checkthat the lid is secure where itprotrudes at the back of theappliance.

Carry the washing machine by thefront feet and the protruding lid at theback.

Removing the transit bars

Remove the left and right covers.

1. Pull off the transit bar covers and

2. then use a screwdriver to release thecatches at the top and bottom.

Installation and connection

67

Using the spanner supplied, turn theleft-hand transit bar 90°, then

withdraw the transit bar.

Turn the right-hand transit bar 90°,then

withdraw the transit bar.

Installation and connection

68

To avoid the risk of injury, theholes for the transit bars must becovered after the transit bars havebeen removed.

Fit the covers onto the two holes.

Secure the transit bars to the back ofthe washing machine. Make sure thetop catch is located above the holder.

The washing machine must notbe moved without the transit bars inplace. Store them as shown or keepthem in a safe place for future use. They must be refitted if the machineis to be moved again (e.g. whenmoving house).

Refitting the transit barsRefitting is carried out by reversing theprocedure.

Installation and connection

69

Levelling the machineThe washing machine must standperfectly level on all four feet to ensuresafe and proper operation.

Incorrect installation may increaseelectricity and water consumption andmay cause the machine to move about.

Screwing out and adjusting the feet

The four adjustable screw feet are usedto level the machine. All four feet arescrewed in when the machine isdelivered.

Using the spanner supplied, turncounter nut 2 in a clockwise direction. Then turn counter nut 2 together withfoot 1 to unscrew.

Use a spirit level to check that thewashing machine is standing level.

Hold foot 1 securely with a pipewrench. Turn counter nut 2 anti-clockwise using the spanner supplieduntil it sits firmly up against thehousing.

All four counter nuts must befirmly up against the housing. Pleasealso check this for the feet which didnot need adjustment. Otherwisethere is a danger of the machinemoving about.

Installation and connection

70

Building under a continuousworktop / in a kitchen run

The washing machine lid cannotbe removed.

This washing machine (with lid intact)can be pushed under a worktop if thereis space to do so.

Washer and dryer stack

A Miele tumble dryer can be stackedwith the washing machine. Theappropriate “WTV” stacking kit* tomatch your tumble dryer is required.

All parts marked * are available fromMiele.

Installation and connection

71

The Miele water protectionsystemThe Miele water protection systemprotects all parts of the washingmachine and surrounds from waterdamage.

The system consists of three maincomponents:

– the inlet hose

– the electronic unit and drainage andoverflow protection

– the drain hose

Inlet hose

– Protection against burstingThe inlet hose is tested to withstandpressures up to 7000 kPa.

Electronic unit and washing machinehousing

– Sump: Any leaking water is collectedin a sump in the base of the machine.A float switches off the water inletvalves, preventing any more waterfrom flowing into the machine andwater in the suds container ispumped away.

– Overflow protection: This preventsthe washing machine taking in toomuch water. If the water levelexceeds a certain level, the drainpump switches on and pumps theexcess water away in a controlledway.

Drain hose

The drain hose is protected by aventilation system which prevents thewashing machine from being emptiedcompletely.

Installation and connection

72

Connection to the water supplyThe washing machine should beconnected to a mains water supply inaccordance with current local andnational safety regulations.

IMPORTANT Australia and NewZealand

This appliance must be installedaccording to AS/NZS 3500.1. Backflowprevention is already integrated in theappliance.

The machine is designed to operatewith a flow pressure of between 100and 1000 kPa. If it is higher than1000 kPa, it is essential to fit a reducervalve.

Connection to the mains water supplyshould incorporate a mains tap with ¾"threaded union. The tap should be fittedby a qualified plumber.

The connection point is subjectto mains water pressure. Turn on thetap slowly and check for leaks.Correct the position of the washerand union if appropriate.

The washing machine is not suitablefor connection to a hot water supply.

Maintenance

Only use a genuine Miele hose shouldyou ever need a replacement. These aretested to withstand pressures up to7000 kPa.

A filter is located in the open end ofthe inlet hose and another in theintake point to protect the inlet valve.Neither filter may be removed.

Installation and connection

73

DrainageThe suds are drained through a drainpump with a 1 m delivery head. For thewater to drain freely, the hose must beinstalled free of kinks. If required, the hose can be extended toa length of up to 5 m. The necessaryparts can be purchased from Miele.

For a delivery head of more than 1 m(up to a max. of 1.8 m) a replacementdrain pump will need to be fitted. Please contact Miele for advice. For a delivery head of 1.8 m the hosecan be extended to a length of up to 2.5m. The necessary parts can bepurchased from Miele.

Drain hose connection options

1. Directed into a sink or basin.

Please note:

– Hook the hose over the edge andsecure it.

– Make sure that the water can drainaway freely without hindrance.Otherwise there is a risk of wateroverflowing or of some of thedrained water being sucked backinto the machine.

2. Connected securely to a plastic drainpipe with a rubber nipple (there is noneed to use a siphon).

3. Connected securely to a floor drain(gully).

4. Connected securely to a standpipe.
