•Thf Importance of Apprentice Training

, GREAT INTEREST has been shown by our members in an apprenticeship program. Many thoughtful questions have lbeen asked at 'dish·ict -meetings, and the officers and representatives have answered t11em .insofar as possible. -

A program of magnitude proposed takes extensive care-ful planning. Apprenticeship _standards have been approved by the employers and the Technic?,! Engineers, _ but the Operating Engineers' plan is still ~undergoing rigid examination. < · It is a tremend, ous job, but We hope to sqbmit a proposal to tb<:> members of Local 3 for their app!1oval in the near future. . .

Apprenticeship training is typical of the progressive t h:i1king that has brought the Operating Engineers to a positic 1 of prominence and leadership in the trade union movemt:nt .

It is typical of a vigorous and effective organization. As otE' Gene raJ President, Joseph L . Delaney has said, "These gains of the past are but a prologue to a future bright with· promise. With his Union strong and active ... the Operating Er~gineer can look ·forward with confidence to unlimited oppo:.:tunities for further social and economic advancement . . . '!

Essential to the realization of Brother Delaney's forecast, We believe, is the success of our· apprenticeship program. We know with the support of Brother Delaney, General · Secret:.:c y Treasurer Hunter P. Wharton, and the International E Yecutive Board we will make it a success.

August is the month of home-furnishings sales, with special prices offered 911 furniture, mattresses, curtain and drapes. Furniture- prices have been subjected to § little · price-cutting recently. B-gt now manufachlrers are threatening to raise' -pric'es next fall as much as 5 per cent especially on upholstered furniture. They say they are being -forced into _ the· price boost by in- · creased~ fabric c.osts.

Other sales this month include the preLabor Day tire sales , offering a chance to replace worn _ tires · at reduc;ed~pricep, .anq. end-of-strmmer clearances of . paint, wall-paper and hardware. .

If you've been thinking about buying a suit, take advantage of the remaining midsummer sales. Suits are slated -for a price rise next year. The most desirable fabrics · have gone up at wholesale. These are ~worsted, and blends of worsted and polyester (a synthetic fiber sold under Dacron or Kodel brand names).

)

In general, furniture experts consider foam rubber more dependably uniform in quality than the utethane, but also more expensive. A good-q]lality ur,ethape can give good service, !:l.!ld eyen be . more durable than foam rubb$r. However, some manufac-

' turers have be.en · n;ducing the Quality of urethane foam to cut costs Home Fumish-

. . . . ' ., - . · ings Daily reports. ·

What'simportant to find out is the ''density" of urethane, foam. This rria-y range from .2.2 pounds per-cubic foot-which is very high qual~ty-to as low as 1.25. Experts say the least satisfactory grade is 1.35 pounds, and some consider -1.5 the minimum quality.

But the retailer himself may not know the density, and you may have _ to r~ly Qn.

'hand" test~. Compress a loose cushion o~ the chair or so£a:, and' observe -. its -co~parative. resili(mcyo Also -o.:'heft" the cushion in your hand. The heavier the urethane, the better the quality. · ·

••

• But don't compare · weights of urethane · against foam rubber-just compare weights _

within each type, Even high-density urethane 1

is naturally' lighter than foam rubber. . · In sofas, also observe whetherall the seat

cushions appear to be the -same height. A: variation in the density of the foam upholstery sometimes produces a variation in the s~ats. One may bulge/ qr be lower than the others. ·

A good uphpfstery -cornbinatibn used _by some of the better manufacturers, is ure

-thane wrapped in a_layer of Dacron fiber fill. The Dacron wrapping helps ~1pholstery resist sagging and keep a smooth appearance. - •

1

It's also important to check density of .; foam vvhen -shopping for foam mattres~es. If density is low, your mattress _eventually \vill sag.

· FABRIC COVERING

What about the fabric covering? This is as important to check as the quality of the foam underneath. Pile fabrics like mohair or frieza generally will wear longer than flatwoven fabri~s because -the pile ·protects -the base yarns.' But ' pile fabrics collect dust and make- more ;.of a cleaning · chore tha:n flat i fabrics . A ,tightly-woven· flat fabric often is a • good compromise, It .should give nearly as . good wear as a pile fabric, -and in fact better _ wear than the cheape( loo~ely-woven pJle · fabrics. c- -
