OPEN SOURCE
Open source is a development method
for software (and hardware)
that harnesses the power
of distributed peer review
and transparency of process.

At the Homebrew Computer club in Palo Alto, California (in Silicon
Valley), Steve Wozniak, a 26 year old employee of Hewlett-Packard
and a long-time digital electronics hacker, had been wanting to build
a computer of his own for a long time.
For years he had designed many on paper,
and even written FORTRAN compilers
and BASIC interpreters for these theoretical
machines, but a lack of money kept him
from carrying out his desire.
He looked at the Intel 8080 chip
(the heart of the Altair computer),
but at $179 decided he couldn't afford it.
A decision to not use the Intel 8080 was
considered foolhardy by other members of the club.

LINUX
![Page 5: Open World Open Source Design](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052315/557018e8d8b42ac0178b53c6/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
OPEN SOURCE DESIGN
The holistic challenge for Design
is to create physical and virtual objects
which are useful art, and inspire spiritual values
by as few atoms and bits as possible.
Like in software (Linux) we must create a
collective and collaborative design asset system.
We must join together with our collective knowledge
and innovate based on a higher level.
We must start to “virtualize” our material world.
![Page 6: Open World Open Source Design](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022052315/557018e8d8b42ac0178b53c6/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
WE NEED LESS
BUT BETTER
& ECOLOGICAL
PRODUCTS.

GLOBAL WARMING
On Feb. 2, 2007, the United Nations scientific panel
studying climate change declared that the evidence
of a warming trend is "unequivocal," and that human activity
has "very likely" been the driving force in that change over
the last 50 years.
The addition of that single word "very" did more than reflect
mounting scientific evidence that the release of carbon
dioxide and other heat-trapping gases from smokestacks,
tailpipes and burning forests has played a central role in
raising the average surface temperature of the earth by
more than 1 degree Fahrenheit since 1900.

LESS IS MORE
We need to start with the front-end of the industrial process
before any material decision is being made.
We need more collective collaboration
and less individualistic egotism.
We need new business models
in which the customers – as a group of power –
join executives, employees and owners/shareholders
as competent “life-savers”.
