Reading Curriculum• Read Aloud
• Wonder
• Consistent between classes
• Use of nonfiction and fiction genres.
• Comparing and contrasting across texts with similar themes or ideas.
• Direct instruction with teacher; novel discussion groups; individual reading and partner practice.
• Reading is Thinking!! We will focus this year on discussing evidence from the text: (why do you think that?); (how does the author show you?); (what are you wondering about?); (how can you clarify?)
• Support students at home by asking these types of questions about their reading.
• Read to 25! Make sure students are reading – books, magazines etc.

Writing Curriculum• Spelling and Word Study:
• Generalizations will be taught this year. These will be based on the 6 syllable types. Practice with these types will occur in class and for homework.
• We will build vocabulary by studying prefixes, suffixes and roots as well as celebrating word choice. We share our love for words!!
• Forms of writing:
• Opinion/Argument
• Narrative
• Quick writes across subjects
• Paragraphs
• Report (short and extended)
• Reading responses

Numeracy Explorations & Writing during DEAR• Math intervention and enrichment.
During three blocks over the course of the week, teachers will meet with students based on needs.
• This will begin after NECAP in October.
• Grouping will change and will provide an opportunity for students to mix with other classes and teacher.
• Groupings will be determined based on class performance and assessments.
• We will be using DEAR time to provide students with further instruction in writing
• We will meet with our own homeroom classroom.

• Signed by parents for month of September

• Must still be completed, may cause increased homework on that night.
