2015 Vale: Ray Inkson

I remember Ray Inkson as a brilliant try scoring winger, fearless tackler and all round larrikin. Give him the ball inside the 22 and he was deadly. In the 2000 season he crossed the opposition line 18 times. (His brother Brett chipped in a lazy 8 tries also that year). His Mum and Dad, Karen and Greg have been great supporters of the club over the years. My love and condolences to the family. Far too young.

Colin Campbell Cup Victory — a pre-season win for the seniors against Melbourne University

Club Pathway Membership: on an improving trend.

Re-established Under 18 Squad thanks to the persistence of Adrian Richards and support from Bully Shaw. They successfully persuaded Community Rugby of the merits of a short-sided Under 18 Competition .

Introduction of Women’s (over 12 years) Rugby to ERUFC by Bully Shaw and now coached by Barbara Matoe

Steady but slow growth in total membership in stark contrast to other local 2nd Division Clubs

On field success: the Under 12, Under 16 , Under 18 and both the A Grade and B Grade Senior Teams progressed to the preliminary stage of the “Finals Competition”.

The Under 12 Team progressed to Grand Finals and brought home a runners-up pennant that is proudly displayed in clubhouse

External Awards: 4 junior players and 2 adult club members represented Victoria in 2015. See page 9 for details.

Cowper Shield Status 10th best club in Victoria (NB there are 9 Premiership Clubs). Note improved status from 2013 and 2014 (11th)

Ladies Day Function - our biggest and best social event in 2015 thanks to Rose Herring and her fantastic team of assistants.

Senior Presentation Evening - thanks to Rose Herring and others, an inclusive function for players, team volunteers, sponsors supporters and their partners was held on the 22 August at the new venue of Heidelberg Golf Club.

Christmas Tree Sales: generously organised by, Dovagate (Pty) Ltd and their business associates is the club’s major annual fund raiser. Despite the set back of a cash theft, the large contingent of volunteer sales staff and delivery crews again ensured that ERUFC had a positive cash flow for 2015.

Pathway Fun Day and Junior Presentations held on 19 September; a huge collaborative effort by our volunteers blessed by good weather. Further thanks go to Shelley and Grant of Sheren Electrics for the loan of a generator at short notice.

Capital Reserves Maintained: our 2 year cycle with principal sponsorship receipts, fewer social functions and home games, led thanks to Christmas Tree Sales to only a small increase in capital reserves. These funds are targeted at the urgently needed renovation of the clubhouse terrace.

Renovation of Susan Street Lighting: Eltham Football Club have initiated a grant application for an upgrade of Susan Street lighting. ERUFC will contribute capital pro rata field usage, and the Football Club’s financial input.

Bridge Street Turf: survived the season! 2015 was the first year in memory that games weren’t cancelled by the council closing our Bridge Street Ground. Rye grass over sowing was secured by club funds and the efforts of Adrian Richards with Nillumbik Council.

Defibrillator: a generous donation has recently enabled the purchase of this expensive but essential piece of resuscitation equipment.

Hoodies: a mass order of tri-coloured hoodies coordinated by Alex Steel, Bully and Suz Shaw, Mark Adams and David Taylor, gave players and supporters visual impact at home and away fixtures. The Shaw family personalised every garment! Thank you Bully and Suz.

The President Report, Tim Adams

The President’s Report

While no Eltham side managed to emulate the unbeaten performance of our Senior A side from the previous season, the fact that the club had two senior and three junior sides play finals football, including the Under 12 side making the Grand Final in their competition, is an achievement to be proud of at a time when clubs generally are experiencing real challenges

retaining both senior and junior age players. In fact, the club had teams in all age groups in the Pathway and Junior Competition, bar the newly introduced Under 11 age group, and for the fourth year running fielded two sides in the Senior Second Division Competition. A very welcome initiative for the club, driven by our Director of Rugby, Andrew “Bully” Shaw, has been the introduction of Women’s Rugby, with the aim of having an Eltham team participate in what is anticipated to be an enhanced program promoted at a national level for girls and women to play rugby in a variety of formats next season.

Season Highlights Senior Club Following the success of 2014, plans for season 2015 received a temporary hiccup with the departure of coach Tom Navanua. However, the willingness of Eltham “old boy” Dave Southwood to return early from a stint coaching in the UK to take up the Senior A coaching role, and the appointment of Stef Myburgh as Senior B coach, soon had things back on track. That said, Stef’s coaching stint almost ended after suffering a horrific facial injury in a match early in the season. However, with his playing boots safely locked away (I believe his wife may have thrown away the keys), he returned to continue coaching after a remarkably quick recovery.

It was always going to be a tough ask for our Senior A side to

win back-to-back shields, in a quality Second Division Competition where little separated the top three sides in A grade, and where playing our boys always brought out the best in the opposition. After finishing runners-up in the regular season, the side bowed out in the Preliminary Final. Unfortunately, earlier that afternoon, the season for our B Grade side came to an end in a thrilling Preliminary Final where they looked at one stage to be heading for an upset victory over Minor Premiers, Cerberus. A try in what was the 81st minute (at least) gave Cerberus victory, a gut-wrenching way to end what had been a tremendous season, capped by a memorable semi-final dismantling of Melbourne. My thanks to Dave and Stef, and the players from both squads for the success they brought to the club this year, and to Grant Draper, Rob Maddalena, Mark Graf, Bully Shaw and Alan Steel whose help was essential for making this such an enjoyable season.

Once again, a number of Eltham players turned out for a combined Master’s side, in a season that culminated in an away trip to play in the tournament in Adelaide.

Junior Club It is to the credit of our Director of Rugby, Bully Shaw, and Adrian Richards, who unexpectedly found himself in a coaching role he was not seeking, that we, and two other clubs, were able to field sides in a revamped Under 18 competition, a significant achievement at a time when boys in this age group have a tendency to leave the game for good. Three of our four Junior teams- Under 12, 16 and 18 – played Semi Finals in their respective competitions, with the Under 12 side winning a cliff-hanger of a match to go through to the Grand Final only to go down to the undefeated Minor

Premiers in the form of Southern Districts. It has been particularly pleasing to see an increase in the number of young players turning out in our three Pathway teams, with 2015 having the highest number of participants in a decade. Despite on-going problems with match scheduling, everyone both on and off the field seemed to genuinely enjoy the rugby get-together on (often cold) Saturday mornings, with good sportsmanship on the field and good humour on the sidelines.

On behalf of the club, thank you to everyone in the Pathway/Junior Club for your efforts during the season, from players to coaches, managers, volunteers in any capacity, parents and sponsors. In particular, it was a pleasure to acknowledge the efforts of Dave Taylor, our indefatigable Junior Coordinator, who was awarded the inaugural Paul Weightman Junior Club Volunteer of the Year for his tireless efforts during the year.

Club and Social Events A number of factors conspired to restrict the number of club events held during 2015. As holders of the Matapos Shield, we were looking forward to hosting Maroondah Rugby Club for our annual pre-season tournament. Unfortunately, scheduling issues meant that the competition was not played this year. On the other hand, we did manage to defeat Melbourne University to retain the Colin Campbell Cup, named in memory of our late Director of Rugby. Our Senior Presentation night was held for the first time in the plush surrounds of the Heidelberg Golf Club, a great location to

which we may return for future events. There is no doubt that the highlight of the evening, amongst the glam and glitter on display, was

Bully’s jacket, a kaleidoscopic piece that Elton John would have been proud to wear! Thanks Rose, Annette, Ange, Roz and others for ensuring that it was such a successful evening. Equally successful was our Junior/Pathway Presentation Day, where we were blessed with great weather, a big turnout and multiple on-field activities. Once again, thanks to the ever-helpful Shelley Lidgerwood who came to our rescue to ensure that we had power for the “bungee jump”. Actually, it was really not until October, when we finally managed to hold the U18 Presentation evening, that our end-of-season celebrations finally finished.

Last year’s success of combining Ladies’ Day with the inaugural Mr. Eltham Competition ensured there would be a bumper crowd in attendance for the 2015 event. Attendees of note included our local State member, Vicki Ward, and the Nillumbik Mayor, Helen Coleman, although I hasten to add that both had departed prior to the day’s main event taking place. A more serious side to the day’s activities was a fund-raising event to raise money for Assist A Sista, and we thank our new major sponsor, Fletcher’s Real Estate, for providing an auctioneer to encourage the participants to depart with their “hard-earned”. As for the Mr. Eltham Competition, I struggle to put images into words. Last year it was the green mankini, this year it was simply a rugby ball used by young Mr. Ward to cover his nether regions! Hair removal and cologne notwithstanding, there was only ever going to be one winner, with big Jimmy Hansen crowned Mr. Eltham, much to the delight of our ladies. And in the kitchen, a great job done by our wizard chefs – Roger, Marc, Pierre and Adrian! Speaking of food, there is a lot of preparation come game days to ensure that food and drink is available, even on days when there may be only one or two games being played. I would like to thank Kate, Adeja, Jaydeci, Mark and Sean (and Rose and Annette) for ensuring that despite the demands involved, club catering ran smoothly this year.

Club Communication Despite the departure of one of its most colourful contributors in the form of Andy Gilbert, The Wattle remains an essential weekly read for club match reports, photos, sponsor details, news and events, coming in an online format, as well as in a practical laminated hard copy for the technologically unadjusted club members with a tendency to spill their drinks. It is in one respect a current collection of what will be the history of the club, and I thank everyone who has contributed, and The Wattle editor Angela Southwood for a tremendous effort to get the newsletter out each week, and for compiling our Annual Report. Similarly, our club’s online visibility has never been higher with both a

14

The President Report 3

club website and Facebook page, the latter in particular providing an entertaining forum for following the fortunes of various national sides during the recent World Cup. Again, the promotion of the club through these portals owes much to the continuous input from Adrian Richards, our Communications Manager. And is there no better way to keep up-to-date with team scores during Saturday than via the club’s smart phone App?

Volunteers and the Committee I cannot think of a better example of how essential our volunteers are to the effective functioning of our rugby club than that provided by the new on-line Rugby Link registration database. Poorly thought-through, inflexible and with a minimum of accessible support, it was a veritable “nightmare on Bridge St”. Only through a huge effort by Adrian Richards, together with Ange, Dave T., Roz, Mark A. and Tom Whitechurch, did the system become “workable”, and everyone involved deserves our heartfelt thanks for the time that was put in to get the system up and running. I would also like to single out our Director of Rugby, Bully Shaw, for a special mention. Over and above his rugby-related activities, Bully, together with his wife Suzanne, managed to raise the profile of Eltham Rugby Club through the signature labelling of our Eltham Club hoodies, with striking effect. Of course, any mention of club merchandise invariably invokes the name of Alex Steel, an invaluable source of advice for the purchase of everything from rugby jumpers to corner posts, who worked with Adrian Reid to ensure Eltham teams looked the goods on the paddock!

At the Senior Presentation night, it was my privilege to award Adrian Richards The Jim Speight Memorial Volunteer of the Year award in recognition of the enormous amount of work he does on behalf of the club, across so many areas, year in, year out. As a club we are absolutely dependent on our volunteers, as Committee members, as coaches, managers, first aiders, touch judges, photographers, scribes, as suppliers of transport, oranges and snakes, and as parents, supporters and the like. I thank everyone for their contribution to the

successful running of the club this year…there will be more to do next year so please, get involved in whatever capacity you can (for a start, think of our upcoming Christmas tree sales)– we need you!

Finance and Sponsors We have been fortunate in having Tom Whitechurch, one of our Senior players, join the Committee and take on the key role of Treasurer. Maintaining financial oversight of the income and expenditure of the club is critical to the club’s viability and the role of Treasurer is a particularly demanding one and does not have the benefit of downtime at the end of the season proper. The club remains in a financially healthy state, buoyed by near record income from our annual Christmas tree sales, an exercise we could not undertake without the support of Dovagate. Thanks again, guys. The withdrawal of teams from the Senior competition impacted on food and bar sales on a number of Saturdays, and there was a slight downturn in total player fees. In addition, additional costs were incurred to maintain the “winter thatch” at Bridge St. We remain grateful to our loyal cohort of sponsors, a number of whom have now been with the club for quite a few years, and we were delighted to welcome Fletcher’s Real Estate on-board as a principal club sponsor mid-way through the season.

15

Winning the Matopos Cup

Facilities As I have communicated in the past, the club has invested considerable time in evaluating the feasibility of two major infrastructure projects – an extension to house a gymnasium and new club terracing. The reality is that it has been, for a number of reasons, difficult to progress these projects. At a recent committee meeting it was decided to focus on one project, the terracing, that we felt would provide the most benefit to club members. We are now involved in on-going negotiations with Council in an effort to achieve a solution that will meet our needs, both functionally and financially. In the meantime, we have committed to support an application for State government funding, initiated by the Eltham Junior Football club and with support from Council, to obtain funding to upgrade the Susan Street lighting. If successful, work on this would most likely start later next year.

One thing we can be pleased with is the success of the over sowing project at Bridge St, first proposed by Adrian Richards almost two years ago, that has allowed our home ground to remain open for the entire Senior and Junior season. Despite some ordinary conditions on occasions, it was a relief not to carry posts and kit over to Susan St, a feeling shared by that marvellous team of Rob and Leigh, ably supported on occasions by Peter M, Pierre, Mark and Sean, who unfailingly ensure that our ground looks a treat come game day. I would also extend thanks to all players, coaches and team support crews who graciously accepted that training at Susan St. was on many occasions the only option given to them in order to preserve Bridge St.

Where to community rugby? Earlier this year, the Melbourne Rebels franchise was sold to Imperium Sports Management (ISM). While the Rebels and VRU will be run as separate business units under the terms of the sale, it is not clear at this stage how the two entities will be working together to promote the interests of the community game across club and schools rugby. In the same vein, what impact this will have on the (the now defunct) Rebels Community Rugby new Strategic Plan is similarly unclear. This is a critical time in community club rugby. Locally, Northern failed for the first time in a number of years to field a single Senior team, while the withdrawal of Melton mid-way during the season reduced the Senior A competition to six teams. Across both the Pathway and Junior competitions, clubs experienced difficulty pulling together numbers in age groups where they were traditionally strong, while even a number of Premier Division clubs struggled with player depth, resulting in lop-sided scores. There is no doubt that rugby at present remains the fourth football code nationally as a sporting drawcard; one can hope that the recent run of success of the Wallabies in reaching the World Cup final might not only raise the profile of the code but also translate into a financial windfall, at least some of which might be invested to promote the game locally. That said, the current resilience of our club with respect to our overall membership says a lot about what we have created at Eltham, and is a credit to all our players, parents, supporters and sponsors.

The President Report 4

Director of Rugby, Andrew (Bully) Shaw

Director of Rugby Report 2015

Firstly let me thank all the volunteers that have assisted with both the junior and senior teams this season. Without your dedication and hard work our club would not be able to function or field the number of teams that we do.

This season we fielded three pathway teams (aged under 6, 8 and 10 years), four junior teams (aged under 12, 14, 16 and 18 years) and two senior teams.

With another successful season on the field, three junior teams and both senior teams played in semi finals. The Under 12 Team led by Michael Hopkins were the only squad to progress from those 5 teams to a Grand Final.

I was lucky to watch two of the junior semi finals and both of the senior semi finals. The results didn’t go our way but none of the teams were disgraced; all of the games were played with high intensity right up to the final whistle.

The Under 12 Team were also defeated in it’s Grand Final but they played with heart and with true Eltham spirit.

Hopefully the lack of Grand Final success this year will be enough to inspire these teams to make the big dance next year.

This season one junior player Dalai Manaiti was selected for the Melbourne Rebels Under 17 Rugby 7s Team and three of his Under 16 Team mates have also been selected for the Victorian

Schools Rugby Union Under 16 Tour to Europe in December. These young men, Andre Jones, Lachlan Farquharson and Mayson Hoverd have honoured state and club training commitments

all season and helped to raise funds to undertake this trip of a life time. I would like to wish them all the best for this exciting rugby tour.

Two of our new coaches at the club this season made the final list in the Asteron Life Community Coach of the Year Award, Russ Hurdle from the Under 6 Team and Simon Weightman from the Under 8 Team. Angela Southwood also made the final of the HBSC National Volunteer of the Year Award. These are all great achievements and acknowledge the hard work of just a few of our club’s wonderful volunteers.

I personally wish to thank Tim Adams and the other members of the club’s executive for the work that they have done behind the scenes. Without the hard work and dedication of this group of people our club would cease to exist. The tolerance of their wives, girlfriends and partners, to frequent and significant club commitments is also greatly appreciated. Thank you for enabling their involvement this season.

Lastly, thank you to all the parents of our junior players. You make it possible for the children to attend training and matches, and then to support the youngsters are exposed to the cold miserable weather that a Melbourne winter may present.

I hope to see you all back in 2016 and if you feel that you can assist the club please feel free to become involved with either the committee or volunteering in other areas of the club.

See you all in 2016

Andrew ‘Bully Shaw Director of Rugby

Junior Coordinator Report, David Taylor

22

Well another year has come and gone. After being awarded Junior Club of the Year in 2014, we knew we had a big mountain to climb in 2015, but we really didn’t realise how difficult a year it would be, in terms of club competition management, Rebels resourcing and ‘club land’ obstacles.

Specifically the year started with us scrambling to implement the ARU’s new database and revenue management system. This involved considerable work for Adrian Richards, Ange Southwood and myself as we built the new Rugby Link database from scratch with registration data and then working out our payment methods (online or paper) whilst trying to accommodate the many payment options and not enforcing the 3% credit card surcharge onto our members. It also had large impacts on cash flow with the timing of payments to the Australian Rugby Union.

Our February Player Registration Day involved a lot of volunteer effort and crash courses in data entry for our volunteers. Thanks go to Alan Steel, Annette, Tom, Roz and Mark Adams for your efforts. After several nights of registering the late comers we ended up with about 135 juniors which was roughly the same as 2014. We have lost about 5 players during the year to relocations etc.

Figure 1 – Junior Numbers by team – TOTAL 130 players

There was a good spread of players across all years, especially in the Under 8, 10 and 12 Teams. Other clubs did not fare so well in many age groups, especially at Northern (2 teams only: Under10 and 14) and Maroondah (3 teams only: at Under 10, 12 (with Footscray) and 14). Kiwi Hawthorn did not field any junior sides. Many clubs only had 6-7 players on some weekends and there were many forfeits. Eltham was fortunate to have strong numbers in all contested age groups (U6-U18) and played with pride in all our games without a single forfeit.

Thanks goes to Adrian Richards and Phil Wykes as they took the coaching reins of the Under 18 Team early in the season and lobbied hard for an Under 18 B short-sided competition which allowed these players to continue to play rugby this year. This might become the blueprint for an age-based competition where the player numbers aren’t strong. The Under 18 Team is particularly vulnerable because of exam

pressure at school, starting work and many other distractions for these young men.

Special thanks also go to Bully Shaw for adding to his duties as Director of Rugby by coaching the Under 16 Team and to Suzie Shaw who assisted him as the team’s manager.

Looking forward, if we retain 2015 players, the Under 18’s will look considerably stronger in 2016 but much work needs to be done by parents, coaches and peers to encourage these lads to commit to rugby every week.

In the graph below I have split the Pathway teams by age (6 to 10 years). We would typically expect to get another 3-4 children join the Under 6 Team, but, unless we recruit older Pathway players, ERUFC is unlikely to be able to field single birth year teams in 2016. The regular weekly absence of 2-3 players would inevitably lead to ERUFC forfeiting games. It makes sense, therefore, to keep the 2 year age window with Pathway teams unless we gain about another 12-15 players across the ages 8-10 years.

Figure 2 – Projected Junior Numbers by team – TOTAL 125 players

Similarly with our older children current data suggests that we should maintain a 2 year age window at Under 12 in 2016 and not participate in the Under 11 competition. No games are currently organized for Under 13, 15 and 17 players because of poor participation numbers in Victoria. Even with a usual 10-15% ‘churn’ rate of players, ERUFC should still have good numbers in Under 12, 14 and 16 age groups next year.

The other impact on a desirable transition to birth year based teams is the need for more coaches, first aiders and managers. Inevitably greater player numbers would require more parents to volunteer to fill these roles.

Community Rugby The Melbourne Rebels were significantly short-staffed this year, with Janelle Duncan going on maternity leave and only a

part-time employee made available to manage the junior and the women’s competition. Clubs had no meetings throughout the year (compared to about 3 in 2014), and contact with development officers from Community Rugby was poor.

Late this year, we have had notification that Janelle Duncan is back at the Rebels which is very welcome, and she has commenced a survey on Junior Rugby to all clubs. Two of the more interesting questions are below and I invite all club members who have an opinion to send in any feedback you might have.

Club News This year each team typically played 14 home and away games on Saturdays, and had time off for the Senior Grand Final Day in August and all school holidays. We also hosted a mid-week night game for the Under 14 Team against Northern to accommodate their lack of players, and rearranged many other fixtures to enable games and a much altered version of the competition schedule. The night game in particular was a great event and we should aim to have more in 2016. The fixture juggling led to all full field junior home games being played on Bridge St and eliminated the need to set up posts, and field markings on Susan Street. Setting up the Susan Street Field is a major task for our small band of volunteers, who already give up Friday afternoons and very early Saturday mornings to prepare club facilities for games. Special thanks in this regard go to Rob Maddalena and his team of volunteers for marking out the ground for us each week

Our teams were fortunate to have dedicated coaches, managers, touch Judges, first aid volunteers and even in some cases photographers. Many thanks again to all the 2015 team volunteers and players please encourage your parents to help out in 2016.

Match day participation of a certified Touch Judge (Assistant Referee) scores valuable bonus points for their (child’s) team. One example of how ERUFC’s focus on training Touch Judges has paid off, was in the Under 12 Competition where we

finished on top of Box Hill by 1 point (helped by TJ bonus points) and in second place on the ladder, so that a drawn result was enough in the semi-final for the team to progress to the Grand Final. They were ERUFC’s only Grand Finalists in 2015. The very successful Under 12 Team were coached by Mike Hopkins and managed by Steve and Val Cox. The team came home with a wet sail to be undefeated in their last 3 home games. The exciting Box Hill semi-final had Eltham in the lead until the opposition tied the score at 17-17 with only 10 minutes to play. As explained, the deadlock was resolved in Eltham’s favour and launched the Under 12’s into the grand final against Southern Districts at Seaford. A lot of Eltham supporters made the trek down to the beach on GF weekend,

22

Roger Iacobucci

Junior Coordinator Report 3

but alas it wasn’t our day and Souths ran out winners despite some good efforts from the team. Special thanks to Mike, Ben, Steve and all the other parents for keeping the team motivated all year.

Our other junior teams did not have the same run of luck this year, with the U14’s group missing out on the finals this year despite putting in some solid efforts on the field but not being rewarded with points when needed. Special thanks to Will, Shane and Rose for organizing a sleepover weekend early in the year for parents and players to ‘bond’ as a team before the season started and for making a special effort to involve all the parents in the team.

The U16 team were through injury without their captain and talented forward Mayson Hoverd for most of the season. In their semi final they kept level with Harlequins 5-5 until half time. Unfortunately, the second half had Quins finding the chalk and putting on 31 unanswered points. Mayson led by example on the sidelines all year despite his injury, and was awarded the club’s Junior Volunteer of The Year Award at the end of the season.

The Under 18 side spent a lot of the year identifying the weaknesses and plotting the downfall of the Shepparton side in a likely semi-final. As it turned out, the anticipated game was a high scoring affair 44-19 with a lot of attacking flair from

the Eltham boys but unfortunately it’s hard to defend line breaks with less than 15 players. ERUFC hopes that some of these boys will progress to the senior ranks and that others will remain to be the backbone of the 2016 U18 Team.

Pathway This year our Under 6 and 8 groups spent many rounds playing against themselves as opposition or grouping up with another club in 3-way round robin style games. This was due to a lack of numbers with other clubs. However, many of the players were just happy to play rugby each weekend and thanks to Russ & Cath, and Simon & Paul, these teams were training

hard every week, hitting the ball up, learning great skills and having a lot of fun. We can’t wait to see these kids develop those skills and learn all about positional rugby in the next few years at Eltham.

Our Under 10 group has been meeting bigger opposition all year, and travelled to just about every club in the Victorian competition. Every player showed how dedicated they are to learning the game and making Coach Aaron proud every week. New recruits, playing rugby for the first time at this age group showed that you just need to be committed each week to learn and train hard. Special thanks to Shelley and then Bruce who took over as their manager during the season. We encourage all the players to continue on their rugby journey and to learn what teamwork can achieve.

Team Eltham were also united by the mass purchase of hoodies this year. The garments patiently named by Bully and Suz Shaw made a big visual impact worn by both players and supporters on match days.

Finally - a special thank you to the parents, coaches, managers, assistants and committee crew that helped out throughout the season. I really appreciate all of the help you gave the juniors this year. Thank you to everyone for a great season at Eltham.

Pathway Teams

Well what a great rugby season we had with the Under 8's this year. The season started out with a real mixture of boys. Some of the older boys had played some Under 8's last year so were wise to the challenges ahead, some others were stepping up into the big league from their experiences in the Under 6s while others had never been in a rugby game before. By the end of the season they were all playing like seasoned veterans, running, tackling, mauling, ripping and passing. The fact that their passing improved so much throughout the season highlighted a major change…they were all starting to realise so much of rugby is about playing as a team and not just wanting to be individual stars. Look forward to seeing that team work develops further in the years to come.

All season our games were played in great spirit by both our boys and the opposition teams. Not sure if it was true but felt like we had lots of games against Box Hill in particular but that turned out great as both teams had very similar skill levels and played well against each other.

Not only did we have a great bunch of boys the parents were great too. Everybody pitched in to help when required and

were very supportive of the entire team. It was great to see the parents getting out their rugby boots and having a run around with kids on some of those cold/wet training nights. We had fun and I am sure the boys loved trying out their skills against us old fellas. In a couple years and they will be running around/through us with no problem!

A big thank you from the Under 8s to the ERUFC and those who volunteer their time to make this club work. Then last but certainly not least, a massive thanks to Coach Simon. His dedication to the cause was impeccable and I think the boys really grew to respect that. They learnt a lot from him about both rugby and how to behave as young sportsmen. Well done mate!

So in summary, a highly successful season. Some of the boys will step up to U10s next year but hopefully this year has prepared them well, while those that stay behind in u8s I think will be in great shape for another fun year.

Under 6 Team

The season began with an influx of new players, all keen to learn new skills, make some new friends and have fun! At our peak we had 16 registered players making training nights action-packed for our new coach, Russ Hurdle.

Our U6 families come from all sorts of backgrounds creating an international feel to our team; Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, England, Ireland, Scotland, the USA, Fiji, South Africa and Zimbabwe all represented (sorry if I missed anyone!).

Returning players for season 2015 were Cathal Finn, Tyler Gilbert, Ben Hurdle, Angus Jones, Alex Walker and Taylor (Tink) Wilson.

We welcomed new kids through the season and farewelled Tyler Gilbert and his family back to the States. He’s now playing grid-iron and loving it!

Debutants for Eltham included Amelie Axnick, Leo Chew, Felix Dunnell, William Gore, Oliver Hewlett, Khyall Mdewha, Jonas and Miley Navuni (continuing a great tradition of Navunis at Eltham), Kiarn Taurima, and Stefan Van Der Merwe.

We were told through the season by opposition parents that our Eltham team set the benchmark for other clubs. We sure had the numbers, and our boys and girls showed great sportsmanship in volunteering to play for the opposition. They learnt our substitution system quickly and were great sports in

taking turns ‘on the bench’. Some were REALLY enthusiastic about subbing off (Angus)!

The families developed fantastic friendships over the season and we’re sad that the team will be separated next year as some of the older kids move on to a U7 or U8 team. We look forward to reuniting at the presentation day and at training next year.

A special thank you to the parents who helped out through the season. It takes a team effort from the parents for the U6 team to succeed on the pitch. From on-field helpers at training and games to the support you gave to the manager; oranges and snakes duties, managing substitutions, official photographers. We really appreciate all of the help you gave us this year.

Thank you to all of the parents who brought their kids along to play rugby for Eltham this season. Whether it was for 1 game or 15, we enjoyed having your family as part of the Eltham Rugby community. Some of those training nights were cold and wet…and the mud, oh so much mud! But, our kids had great fun and learnt a few things along the way and that’s what it’s all about.

Russ and Cath Hurdle.

Treasurer’s Report, Tom Whitechurch

2015 has been another big year for the club both on and off the field. Congratulations to all the teams who made it through to finals and all the other teams for another good year of rugby. Off the field we have had some great events and some changes in the way we operate which has been driven

by the Australian Rugby Union. This year, we have again been fortunate to have had fantastic participation from a lot of players and families. Thanks to everyone for their contributions during the year.

REVENUE Bar and canteen: This year we have seen a reduction in our income from our bar and canteen, this is due to a combination of fewer events run this year compared to last year and the game scheduling from the VRU which saw less home days where juniors and seniors both played at home. This has had a direct impact on our bar and canteen revenue. Ladies Day was another successful day that raised money over the bar and in donations. Thanks to Mark and Sean for working behind the bar throughout the year. Thanks also to Adeja, Jayda and Kate for their work in the canteen/BBQ and thanks to any other members/volunteers that helped out behind the bar or in the canteen throughout the year.

Merchandise: The sale of Eltham merchandise in 2014-15 is consistent with 2013-14 although slightly lower. In 2013-14 as part of a two year plan for Merchandise, a substantial amount of stock was purchased with minimal purchases in 2013-14. Record sales in that year saw a large net profit. In 2014-15 sales revenue was lower than 2013-14 and net profit is significantly down due to the purchases throughout the year which will result in a higher net profit for the club in the 2015-16 financial year. Thanks to everyone involved in the merchandise throughout this year.

Subscriptions: 2015 has been another successful year on the collection of fees. As with every year the commitment from the Management Committee is for all players to fully pay their relevant fees. Even though this was always an ideal, The Club did not achieve this. There is a small amount of senior fees outstanding at the end of the year with the vast majority fully paid before the end of the season, the outstanding payments and how best to approach the recovery of these will be decided prior to the beginning of the new year. Overall revenue from subscriptions is down due to a reduction in numbers of players.

Christmas Trees: Our major fundraiser for the year is always time intensive for everyone involved. It is a busy three weekends in December, where everyone has Christmas parties to attend yet we want more from our volunteers asking them to sell and deliver trees. This year we did not quite reach the sales target set by Aaron Hall last year. The

great work by all our volunteers was however partially soured by a break in at the club which saw $750 dollars of the Christmas Tree and Bar Float money stolen. Again this year we will need volunteers to help sell and deliver trees. Please sign up at the bar.

Sponsorship: Sponsorship is down compared to last year as we are in the second year of a two year sponsorship cycle, where the majority of sponsorship is paid upfront. Thanks again to RESI, K9, TreesRUs, ADMA, Dovagate, Sheren Electrical and Sheppards Body Works for your continued support as major sponsors. We did see some new sponsorship this year with Fletchers Diamond Valley coming on board and Commodity Trading Solutions.

PAYMENTS There were some increases in existing payments and new payments this year. The club trialled the provision of a physio to strap at home games for the two senior teams and provide strapping training to managers and coaches for the junior club. We had a substantial increase in the fees we paid per player to the ARU and for insurances with the introduction of player fees and an insurance fee per player which previously had been set at a team rate. Our bank charges were up by a couple of hundred dollars.

The bar/canteen expenses have increased slightly from last financial year.

Club room maintenance has decreased slightly from last year due as some out of ordinary items which were purchased last year to fit out the office as a merchandise room.

The club bought a number of new sets of jerseys for teams that were due for replacement and invested in new training equipment to replace some very tired existing equipment.

Medical supplies has increased due to greater use during the year.

The cost of presentations for seniors and juniors was consistent with previous year however the presentation of this has changed in the accounts to show the pure expenditure. The money recovered has been shown as

32

Treasurer’s Report 2

30

income under expense recovery on the receipts page. The net of these is an expense of $3,358.

Expenditure on utilities was down this year, as expected. As mentioned in last year’s annual report we had a payment for a water leak that went undetected for some time, which the club had to pay. This was not reported in the last financial year as it was received in the 2014-15 financial year. This year, with no leak our water costs were down and water costs were lower again as we are no longer paying for the non-existent water meter. Again a big thank you Alan Steel, on behalf of the club for getting to the bottom of this.

The club did not undertake any capital spend during the 2014-15 financial year.

We are now trying to save our pennies for our spectator seating/terracing project and are in early discussions with Nillumbik Council and there is a potential contribution to the upgrade of lighting at Susan Street.
