Mapia’s History

MAPIA is an Indonesian student association in PSB Academy thatexists since few years ago and it was founded by Adrian Yusuf Maringan Pardede. In that time, beside be the founder of Mapia, he also become the President of the rst generation of Mapia. To know more about Mapia, one of the team from Mapia Magazine got a chance to do an interview with the founder of this organization, Adrian. Here is the result of our interview:

When is the exact timeMapia was built?

Actually, Mapia was born in 23rd of March 2008. But then because it needs time

to get the approval from Indonesian Embassy (PPI), this organization nally ocially created in approximately 2

months after it was born which was fell in24th of May 2008.

Did you nd any diculties in convincing other Indonesian student

to join this organization?

Not really, because the one who give ideas is the entire Indonesian student itself, then like I said, I start to make a

committee for Mapia.

23rd is Mapia’s birthday, so Mapia Online Magazine will be released every month on the same date. So Stay Tuned Fellas!

What make you got an initiative to build this

organization?

So at that time, the Indonesian students in PSB join the sport event held by PPI (the

Indonesian student association in Singapore) and I just realized that our teams only play as the representative of

PSB and there’s no exact association for Indonesian student yet. After that I’m starting to build a

committee to set up this organization.

Yes, at rst, this organizationnamed PIMP (Perhimpunan Indonesia Mahasiswa PSB) but then, after we know what the meaning of pimp is, we directly change the name to a better

one, so it’s called MAPIA(Mahasiswa PSB Indonesia).

I heard that MAPIA is not the rst name of this

association, is it true ?

Mapia’s History

What is the special thing

about Mapia?

For me, Mapia is a special organization in PSB as this organization was the rst student

association in PSB. So Mapia is the eldest organization. Moreover, Eva Berlin is the only woman that ever ociates as the President of Mapia. And Beatrix Judika, she was the rst

person who ociates as the Vice president twice in arow for 4th and 5th generations in Mapia.

For me, I hope that this organization will always be exists even until 10 years later. I hope it will always be the good example and the spot for the entire Indonesian students in PSB Academy to

share, assemble as one unity and show high solidarity to each other.

and the last question, what is your expectation to this

organization in future?

Independence day of Indonesia

Every year, Indonesia celebrates their independence day which comes every 17 of August. The reason why this date becomes a sacred day for Indonesian is because in 17 August 1945 Indonesia’s rst President, Ir. Soekarno, proclaimed

Indonesia’s independence and declared the birth of the Republic of Indonesia after a long ceaseless struggle and being colonized by Dutch and Japan who wanted to dominate Indonesia’s natural wealth in most of the areas in Indonesia.

The Celebration

Therefore, to celebrate this victory, every 17 of August there are plenty of things the Indonesian usually do, started from decorating most of the places with Indonesia’s ag or at least with red and white ornaments (the color of Indonesia’s ag is red and white) weeks before the independence day, re-paint the monument in each neighborhood, solemn ceremony at the day which is held in most of the places including in the national palace, and the most fascinating and awaited moment is the traditional races that are being held in every neighborhood.

The traditional games during the celebration

Lomba makan kerupuk (eating crackers race). In this competition, the cracker is hanged using the plastic rope in a specic height (usually as high as your head) and you must eat that cracker with your hand tied. It’s quiet challenging as you must try to reach the cracker using your tongue and nish it assoon as possible.

Lomba tangkap belut (catching the eel). In this game, we must catch the eel that is provided in a bucket lled with water and move the eel to another bucket in the opposite point, the one that can move the most eel is the winner. Usually this game is played by kids and although it is hard for them tocatch, they still enjoy it.

Lomba balap karung (sack race). This race looks similar with running competition; the thing that makes it dierent is in the way you run. You must put your-self into the sack and jumping from the start to the nish line and the one who get to the nishline rst is the winner.

Lomba hias sepeda (decorating the bicycle). During the Inde-pendence Day, generally there’s a team in each neighborhood that go around certain areas using their bicycle. The unique side is, their bicycle must be decorated as unique as possible and the one with the most eccentric decora-tion is the one who win thecompetition.

The traditional games during the celebration

Panjat pinang (areca-tree climbing). This is the most catchy and challenging game during the Independence Day. The big area trunk is placed in the grassy eld and smeared with clay and oil to make it slippery. On top of the trunk, they already put some prizes such as bicycle or televi-sion. The one that can reach the top of the trunk win the prizes. However, to reach the top is quiet hard. A lot of people, especially kids, climbing over each other. They get muddy and some of them also fall, but still struggling to win the prize.

Happy 67th Independence Day, Indonesia!
