May is a busy time for the birds, all our resident birds will haveyoung to feed or may even be sitting on a second clutch of eggs, whilst our summer visitors are just arriving and setting upterritories and the early arrivals will be sitting on eggs. All ofthem are singing. I hope you managed to catch some of the dawnchorus or the evening chorus.Sadly, we didn’t get any more visits from the turtle dove but I didsee one in the forest. I have spent a lot of time in the forest duringMay, listening to the bird song of many warblers,Willow Warbler,Chiffchaff, Blackcap,Whitethroat, Lesser Whitethroat, GardenWarbler and a surprising Wood Warbler which I have not heardlocally before. I made a late evening visit to the forest at the endof the month to look for Nightjar, with 4 heard calling. The Cuckoo has been calling daily throughout May but towardsthe end of the month his call changed from ‘cuckoo’ to ‘cuck-cuckoo’.We have a pair of Swift regularly flying around the village, hopefully they can find a nest site. No sign of the SpottedFlycatcher in Boltby, I had to visit Thirlby to see one this year.July is a quiet time for the birds, this is when they start to moultout of their now scruffy feathers and grow new ready for thewinter. Some non-breeding waders will be moving south thismonth and stopping off to feed around local lakes and ponds. Alsoto look out for are Hobby’s hunting dragonflies, House Martin andSwallows.

Gardeners' CornerHello again. I hope you have enjoyed your gardens in the last few months.Thank goodness it rained at the

beginning of June as all my water butts were empty and all the plants were beginning to look a little distressed. Istill have a few nettles in my garden but they evidently support a number of butterfly and moth species and theyalso support a range of herbivorous insects that are attracted by predators such as ladybirds and hoverflies, wellthat's my excuse and I'm sticking to it! You or your children or grandchildren may be interested to know that it

was National Insect Week 22 - 28 June and may find some interesting information on their websitehttps://www.nationalinsectweek.co.uk

Openingwindows for alittle while, evenin the winter

freshens things up inside, reducing theneed to use lots of chemical smells tocover up staleness. If you have severeallergies, then keep them closed untilyour triggers are no longer around.

Refresh carpets & rugs.Unlike tile and hardwood floors, carpets absorb stench like no other, especially after countless food spillsand pet messes. Sprinkle bicarbonate

of soda all over the carpet - not justproblem areas, and let it sit for a fewhours before vacuuming. The samemethod works for pet beds andmattresses. You should also vacuumyour mattress every 3-6 months toremove dustmites, skin cells etc.

Deodorising with dryersheets.

Think beyond the laundry room:Place a few dryer sheets in closets, dressers, or other small spaces. Itgives everything a fresh-out-of-the-laundry scent even if it's been stowed

away for months.

How should I wash mydown duvet to ensurethat it is fully clean?

Use a large capacity, front loadwashing machine to wash the downduvet. While the duvet might be light,it will absorb a lot of water andbecome really heavy during washing.Hence, a large capacity washingmachine is preferred.Select a gentle mode and use a lowheat setting. The temperatureshouldn't be higher than 30oC.

might want to get rid of anywrinkles with quick ironing, butthere's nothing called a quick ironin the case of a duvet. Secondly, the heat can damage the soft downinside. So, it is a big no-no.

2. Do not line dry. Line dryingencourages lumping towards bothends of the duvet.

3. Wash your duvet cover atleast once a month. That'llensure that your duvet is cleaninside.

4. Every morning, give yourduvet a shake. and every fewdays, you can fluff it up a bit too.

5. Leaving your bed unmade andopened up for an hour or so afterrising helps sweat etc. evaporatehelping your bed to be fresher. Itmay also help to prevent bed bugsand reduce dust mite activity.

How to wash Down andFibrefill Pillows in the

Washing MachineMost down and fibrefill pillows aremachine-friendly, which means youcan just toss them in the washingmachine for a refresh. Be sure to washtwo pillows at a time to keep the

washer balanced, ensuring an all-around clean. Always read yourpillow's care label and follow thedirections accordingly. If you clippedoff the tag or can't find theinstructions, use this as your guide:1. Select the gentle cycle and use

warm water, then add on an extracold water rinse and spin cycle.

2. Add a small amount of detergent.3. Tumble the pillows dry on low

heat, fluffing and turning themoften. To help keep pillows plump, toss in a few dryer balls if you havethem. Remember: Since pillowstake longer to dry than a normalload of clothes, musty smells mayarise. In that case, set pillows inthe sun for a few hours to get ridof the stench.

How to Wash FoamPillows

Unfortunately, you can't put yourlatex (these can be washed by handwith washing powder then rinsed andhung or laid to dry) or memory foampillows straight in the washingmachine. While foam pillows areresistant to dust mites, it's stillimportant to clean them on a regularbasis. As always, you should check the

Down is an absorbent material. It canabsorb detergent, soap, and any otheragent you use for washing, and retainit even after the spin cycle. Therefore,we encourage you to stop themachine after the rinse cycle andrepeat the rinse.

How should I dry it?Down duvets are best dried in tumbledryers. Again, as with washing, dryingshould also be done at minimal heatsetting. The reason is that heat cancause shrinkage. When you are drying in the tumbledryer, throw a tennis ball or two in it.The balls make the duvet fluffy as itdries. If you want something moreeffective, then you can use dryerballs. To avoid any chance of downclumping together, stop the tumbledryer every 30 minutes or so and givethe duvet a good shake.Lastly, if the down duvet is not dryeven after hours of tumble drying, then you can leave it for dryingoutside in the shade. As mentionedbefore, direct heat from the sun cancause shrinkage. So, drying in theshade is important.

Are there any other Don'ts ?1. Do not iron your duvet. You

washing instructions on the pillow'stag, or follow the cleaning methodoutlined here:1. Remove pillow covers or

pillowcases and wash according tothe care tag. If you cut off the caretag, then follow these instructions:stick the pillowcases and covers inthe washing machine, select thenormal or casual cycle, and use hotwater. Add detergent.

2. To get rid of dust or dirt on thepillow, vacuum both sides, ortumble in the dryer on the no-heat

or air-only cycle for 20 minutes.3. Spot clean any soiled areas with a

cloth dipped in a mild, sudsy soapsolution. Lightly rinse with a dampcloth. (FYI, wet foam tears easily,so be gentle with the water andsoap solution.)

4. Allow the pillow to air drycompletely before putting it backon the bed or couch.
